Help New Thunderbolt Owner. - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I got one and I've noticed that the touch input is slow on this Thunderbolt. I have an Incredible and when typing, it's quick while one the other hand, the Thunderbolt is slow meaning I have to wait for the touch to register. Typing on the keyboard sucks and just simple things are slow. I'm just wondering if this is a hardware or software issue because I've tried calibrating the display and keyboard and no success. Help would thankful.

I asked about this in another thread and never heard a response but I'm having the same problem, so it's not just you. I never noticed any problems like this with my moto droid either.
If your phone is plugged in, unplug it and plug it back in, or just reboot if it's been on for around a day or so. They are both temporary fixes but usually work for me.

Try the gingerbread keyboard in the market. I noticed this when i switched from the incredible. That keyboard will help a little.
Search for "android keyboard for 2.3"

I've tried rebooting and the gingerbread keyboard. The whole device is somewhat lagging when touching the screen for actions. I rebooted and the lag issue sorta went away then as its being used more, the lag returns....Overall since I've gotten it, its not that much of an upgrade for an Evo. This stripped version of Sense 2 is definitely not as smooth and fast as it was on my Incredible even with better RAM and processor. The camera isn't that good either.

I noticed the same problem on the stock keyboard but after switching to SwiftKey I haven't had a problem.

I tend to experience this problem when my phone is on the charger...

I've been using that since I got the phone and it's always had the problem. Same thing with SwiftKey, so I just stuck with the gingerbread keyboard for now.

I think it has to do with their poor dictionary setup on the keyboard.

I cleared everything on my phone besides the sd card, installed a desensed rom, and restored some apps (using stock HTC keyboard still). Everything was fine at first, but now I'm having the touchscreen responsiveness issues again. It's as the OP said with the keyboard, you have to wait for the touch to register. Quick swipes don't work at all.
I've heard of multiple people having the same issue, but it seems that most people don't have any problems, and the issue ends up being ignored. so is anyone else still having this happen?
edit: if I unplug the phone (it was charging), it temporarily fixes the problem.

i dont have a problem with my keyboard or touchscreen responsiveness but then again i have the so called its a "functionailty" resetting problem...
which you can read all about here!

[Q] Touch screen problems -- any one else?

The response on the touch screen for my atrix is all screwed up, I was wondering if anyone else had these issues.
I first got the phone in april and it worked flawlessly, for the last week the touch screen response has been really weird. sometimes it doesn't recognize input at all, other times it thinks i'm touching somewhere else, it often randomly selects a point on the screen completely on its own.
i'm unlocked, have a custom recovery. i started getting the issues on alien3, i flashed a new custom recovery and alien4 and i still have the problems.
i'm worried its hardware at this point, and i don't know what options i have for warranty since i got it on ebay. am i screwed?
First try again flashing everything from the start.
1. Flash the newest recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500
2. Flash this radio for GingerBread ROMS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163009
3. FULL WIPE - Dalvik, Cache and data. (Also internal&external SD if you want to)
4. Flash any FULL WIPE ROM you want, like Alien #4.
5. If still didn't resolve the problem and you want to try more stuff, try flashing other kernel ?
Like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156040
You can try also flashing full SBF, read more about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
Try Touchscreen Booster from the Market.
Went through the same pain and read everything on XDA until I found a thread about the app.
Was driving me nuts but have had a stable screen for 3 weeks now.
I am using Super Optimized setting.

If you problem doesn't get solved by clean flashing a new ROM, then it's a hardware issues -> as in "you need to replace digitizer".

Im having the same issues and went about flashing the whole phone to no avail. I will for sure try touchscreen booster and post my results. If that doesnt help, is it the digitizer that needs replacing or the lcd? Digitizers are a lot cheaper on eBay lol
The only app I found says its for the galaxy. Installed it anyways, selected "super optimized settings" and so far so good. Thanks so much Andy_Thatcher!!

this actually seems to be helping a lot. thank you. i will try a new kernel in the future but this is working great right now.
Apologies, did mean the Galaxy app.

I have these issues to. They appeared randomly and there are random periods where it goes away, then comes back, sometimes worse than others. The SGS Touchscreen Booster app definitely helps, but it doesn't make it go away for me.
The only thing I haven't tried listed in this thread yet is flashing a new Kernel.
I've considered buying a new digitizer and replacing it myself, but the fact that the occurs so randomly and can even sometimes stop after rotating the screen, I'm very hesitant to do so.
i have tried this, but the problem still persist. I tried Optimized & Super Optimized settings, but its still the same
Even though the affects sound the same the cause maybe different. I know that sounds unlikely but I know that the Screen Booster worked for me.
There are a couple of other paths you may want to look at.
I was always convinced that the issue was not hardware based otherwise no matter what I did to the software it wouldn't have changed the fault but software changes did.
In my case before I implemented the app I would get a few hours respite by installing another base.
I have never used AT&T's OTA for Gingerbread so have been able to to SBF to what ever build I liked. For a while going to the initial Froyo build worked but as said only for a day at most. I had reached the point where I didn't care if it was Froyo or Gingerbread I just wanted a working phone.
No doubt I will get some flack for that comment however my phone has never hard bricked and I have been up and down the builds like a man possessed.
This is where I put the statutory do this at your own risk. It worked for me but I do not know the history of your device.
Then I came across this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131649 thread.
It worked ! Well for a couple of days.
At that point I started get get some respite to SBF'ing to Pudding 2.3.4 Pre-Root.
My trouble with all of this is that I do not understand the issue. I suspect it was a software glitch I created due to messing with builds. Screen Booster worked for me and if I were you I would spend a little more time before going down the other paths.
Again how I got it to work was as follows.
Install.
Set to Super Optimized, initially there was little change in the behaviour of the phone and I thought it was a bust.
Rebooted
Set to Super Optimized again and it started working.
If anyone should know why this screen behaviour happens please let me know. I am close to getting another Atrix so I can take Screen Booster off this one to try and figure it out.

[REQ] Swype

Has anyone found a working version of Swype that works with qHD screens?
EDIT: Sorry I meant to post this in the HTC Vivid forum.
i have shape writer i haven't tried it yet
but its attached
Swype has support for qHD already, I believe. Not that anything involving qHD would help you with the Rezound since it's 720p lol.
Edit: Oops lol didn't notice your edit. But still, it should have qHD support.

The current version from their website works fine on my Rezound, just has that annoying bug where you click oh the end of a sentence to put punctuation or continue typing after fixing something, and it selects the whole word.

I am using swype from the download link i had through the beta for my incredible and it works wonderfully. First thing i did with the phone.
I too am using the beta I had with my Dinc, however I found that I can't swype as fast on the RZ as I could on the Dinc, if I do it loses the traces and uses whatever letters it ran over to guess a word. Kind of weird, so I've just learned to slow my swyping speed down a little bit, no biggie.
Just download it from the Swype website. Works great!
I am also just using the Swype beta from their website. I have also noticed slight stutter when swyping like rbobby pointed out. It seems like it loses the trace halfway through and swype thinks it is two words.
Good its not me. I kept thinking I had something on my screen or finger.
Curious, for those who are also seeing the skip and didnt before. Do you have a screen protector now? Did you on your last phone?
Its the only thing I can think of because plain glass just feels "sticky" to me.
Do any of you think the "trace" functionality of the stock HTC keyboard measures up to Swype?
Used it on my TB, spell prediction to me isnt as good as swype.

I tried it for one day and wanted to commit sepoku.

I put a screen protector on my RZ today. Didnt help swype at all, so its definitley not an issue with skin sticking on the glass.
Which means either it cant keep up with swype ( ) or maybe the screen isnt as responsive as it should be.
Anyone know of any apps to test if there are bad areas on the screen?
I downloaded it from the Swype website and it works great! I am definitely a Swyper for life!
I noticed this as well. I don't think its the screen sensitivity since no other apps have problems scrolling. Not sure what it is, might play with the settings some in swype for sensitivity. Wonder if the screen resolution has anything to do with it.

I think it works well. I have had to add a few words to the dictionary, mainly bad ones, but otherwise I think it is good. I like the OEM look. That is why I use it over swype or something.

This happens to every single rezound, around the keys in the middle of the keyboard.
It's a Swype bug.
They know about it. It's all over the Swype forums.
I'm waiting patiently, and swyping SUPER SLOW until then. really annoying!
HTC Trace is nowhere near as fast/accurate, but still works. Strangely, you can't trace in a lot of things (like website URL's, searching for things, etc etc. Only messages and a handful of other places).
Swype hasn't worked for me from there site, can someone toss a link my way thanks Davey

Thanks, I hadn't heard about this. The only trouble I've had is Swyping in landscape mode. Maybe I'm just not a fast Swyper!
I'm having problems with Swype too ... sometimes losing "track" of my finger and outputting 2 words instead of my intended word.
I'm curious if the resolution is causing problems for Swype since this is the first 720 resolution phone?
And when you say it is all over the Swype forums...where? I'm looking and I haven't found one post that remotely mentions a problem like this.

[Q] Why do all keyboards seem inaccurate on the SGS II?

I've had the SGS II for about three weeks now and have continuous issues with keyboard input accuracy. From the Samsung and stock Android keyboard, to the ICS hacked version (and then the Market version) as well as Swiftkey X - I make mistake after mistake regardless of whichever one I'm using. I'm coming from a Captivate where the text input seemed a non-issue on any keyboard I used. It almost feels like the touch panel/digitizer isn't aligned with where my fingers are touching.
Does anyone else have issues with keyboard accuracy? I love this phone but this issue is really preventing me from enjoying the experience.
I'd highly recommend the ICS keyboard linked later in this thread. Much better than what I initially posted.
Swiftkey X works perfectly fine for me.
I'm using the ported ICS keyboard found on the market and it works very well. There have not been any problems for me at all.
Just installed it and I find myself making the same mistakes as any of the other ones. It's so weird...I've never had this problem on the Captivate and other phones in the past.

Happy camper here
I see a couple ICS keyboards on the Market, can ya provide a link? I'm always up for finding something new although as I mentioned already, I like SKP.
I am using go keyboard from the market with go launcher and I noticed the button( keys) are bigger. But honestly I don't have any issues with my keyboard calibration works fine. I sometimes not a wrong key but that is my fault and not a calibration issue. Possibly you can calibrate your screen? Never have done it but I think it can be done. Maybe a bad phone also?

I was able to eliminate this problem by loading the cognition rom. Im not sure exactly why it fixed it but i assume it because it is an international rom that was ported.
im using the swype beta 3.6 doesnt really need to be "accurate" since all you do is "swype" it. but it is fairly accurate for me if i have to type with it.
I'm using the swype keyboard on mine Galaxy S2, I am a new convert from the iPhone and can barely type on this thing. Thank God for swipe. It appears to me that i have to hit the upper portion of the key to make an accurate key press. If I hit it dead on I get the key below it, strange.

Yes.. flashing a rom and having no earthly idea why it just magically fixed is quite a solution! Let me jjust drop everything I'm doing, lose all of my time and effort of making my current rom the way i want it so I can flash the rom you are assuming fixed it without any facts or reasoning so I can make you happy.

Yes, it seems like you have to hit the letter you want about 2mm high. At first I thought it was because I was converting over from the iPhone, but two months later I still had problems. I have kind of retrained to hit the buttons on the upper half. I am going to try the ICS keyboard.
And a goodnight too.

Keyboard sucks

I can't seem to find a good keyboard for the razr. I have used swift key for a while on my other HTC built phones, but this is my first Motorola phone and the keyboard just can't keep up with me. I have tried every 3rd party keyboard and none of the can keep up with me on the razr but can perfectly fine on the other phones that I have. Im starting to think its the software problem. The stock keyboard keeps up better than any other keyboard but it still can't keep up. When I had an iPhone no matter how fast I typed it kept up (no Im Not a fanboy)
Is there a hack of mod that I can flash to make the keyboard/screen more responsive?
Thanks

I use this one and it's my current favorite -- BUT it has a bug on the RAZR (running stock GB) where I often get the first letter of a word doubled after I go back to correct another mistake. Works really well otherwise -- accurate and super fast.
Example: "Where ate you" and I backspace to change "ate" to "are" and then when I go to type you again I get yyou, It's a bug because the first y isn't underlined and the auto correct only affects the part I actually typed. Very occasionally I get double letters like "yoyou" when you is all I typed. Doesn't happen too often.....
Do you have this issue with it?
Does FC from time to time.... but that just seems to be an issue on the phone itself.
biggest pile of nonsense thread ever
standard keyboards , swype all work tits perfect
and HTC imod keyboard
some people are just useless and they blame the hardware lol
I installed it today, so my experience not really great. But i got zero buggs till now.
I have tried all of those keyboards and yes thumb keyboard is the fastest by far, but it has that really annoying bug for me too, and it still doesnt keep up. I love swiftkey but I only have problems with it keeping up with me on this phone.
Edit:
Apparently Thumb Keyboard hasn't updated his app in the amazon app store in a while. I got it on one of the days that it was free. I just got it for $2.50 on the play store, and switched to the ics theme, and it works amazingly!
Thanks guys
personally I love the stock keyboard that is loaded by default, great coloring, love the predictive words to chose from and its just the right size for my fingers in landscape mode and I have yet to be able to type faster then it can recognize (didn't even know that was possible). If you can out type the buffer you spend WAY to much time on your phone texting.

Per this post I spend way too much time texting, as I can out-type most keyboards. Last night, based on this thread I tried out Thumb KB, and I'm loving it. The dev actually has a 24hr refund policy, which gave me the confidence to try it for two bucks or whatever.

I am currently using SwiftKey (paid version), and must agree that at times it did have a bit of trouble keeping up.
I ended up fiddling around in setCPU in order to make it feel a bit snappier, and surprisingly it worked! Jury is still out on whether it is a placebo effect or not though.
I've also blocked it from accessing networks using DroidWall (amazing app, everyone should have it), mostly for privacy reasons, but perhaps it also might have an effect.
If you have root, I would recommend playing with the CPU settings and see if it helps. No point abandoning a keyboard you like if there is a potential fix.

Maybe its just me, and I am aware of most of the situations where texting is needed (school, work, church and things like that), but given the choice i would rather spend 30 seconds on a phone call then 5 minutes texting back and forth.
If you don't mind my asking how many texts would you say you send in a day?
I will say the stock keyboard and screen size has me typing faster on a touchscreen then I've ever managed before (2-Archos 5's, an EnV touch and a SGS player 4.0 over the last 5 years) but nowhere near your speed clearly.

Looking back at my logs it seems I send 200-300 texts in a day. When I say that it looks excessive; however most of these are ongoing conversations with friends or family. These are usually times when a phone call is not really warranted, and some people (like my wife with our kids) are really busy and can't always take a phone call.
I agree the razr keyboard and screen are great - I type almost as fast as I used to on my blackberrys.

Swiftkey for the win. I picked up a DNA last night, and to be honest only used the stock keyboard long enough to get my back restored. No issues with Swiftkey on it.
I'll chime in here with Swiftkey also. I have been using that since release and never looked back. So far I am enjoying swiftkey flow even though I was never a swype fan. Flow's word predictions are excellent.
I've been using Swype since it came out and it was one of the first things I installed on my DNA, No problems here at all.
using swiftkey flow/swiftkey, no issues since day 1. you should make sure your not pressing the screen with another part of your hand/fingers as the screen goes right to the edge of the phone, sometimes i find when im watching a video the side of my finger might touch the screen and pause it. You might not be used to a phone with such a small bezel.
Just got my DNA, and I have no trouble typing at all.
you know what? for the last two years, ive swore by the GB/ICS/JB keyboards as they were nice looking and very accurate. To me they suck on this phone, maybe its me, maybe its the screen size, idk, but I will say this, I used swiftkey before and wasnt really a fan,
BUT
i just put it on my DNA and it has solved my woes! Thanks for the input guys.
Silly question, but have you done the touchscreen calibration? Settings -> Language & keyboard -> HTC Sense Input -> Advanced -> Calibration Tool.
Not a single issue for me. Especially coming from a GS3. I can type rather fast on this keyboard lol
