Odin & Heimdall? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use odin all the time on my fascinate and am very familiar with it, Lol. But, I was wondering what, if any, are the differences between Odin and Heimdall? Is one better or more effective than the other? Thanks in advance for any info pertaining to this. And Btw, it was really difficult to not post this in the development section. Lol! J/K.

They both do the same thing, Odin was the first on the market been around and most ppl (like me) started out with Odin. Heimdall also has a Linux and Apple version, so for those people who have problems with Odin or use other platforms, it is a good Alternative. My recommendation is to get familiar with both for this reason

Rooting/Cyanogenmod (Macbook)

I'm coming from an iPhone after having all previous gens so I'm completely clueless about Android and the ins/outs of the OS.
I only own MacBooks and curious if:
1. I can root my SGS2, if so how?
2. Can I install the Cyanogenmod's?
Also, what exactly are the Cyanogenmods? I've been watching YouTube vids but actually explain what they are and how to install from start to finish on SGS2 w/ Macbook.
thanks

Gary's helping each other out, right on.
Definitely read that guide though. One of the single most important steps to become familiar with. Heimdall is what you'll be looking for. Odin isn't Mac compatible.
And a word of caution. IPhones are one of the harder things to 'brick' or ruin. Recovery mode is baked into it. For android that's kind of what download mode is. But having an issue while flashing bootloaders CAN break that, and there's usually nothing you can do to recover from a 'hare's brick.
The good news is 99% of things to do to your phone don't require flashing bootloaders. If ever in doubt, don't risk it. Just not worth it.

[Q]Coming from HTC phones, learning to use Odin?

So I'm totally comfortable with the HTC rooting and roming world, but Samsung looks like a whole different ballgame. No fastboot, everything done through Odin, etc. Doesn't look hard, just not sure where to start. Any suggestions on guides or tips?
thanks
You have GOT to be kidding me.... Your lazy arse didn't even TRY to search for one yourself...
There are also some other good reads. Any tutorial on xda will help you, could also try looking in the S2 forum.

Yeah, but I want more than just a guide. I want explanations for why things work the way they do. I get how and why things work the way they do on HTC. I don't want to just be following scripts clicking buttons, and then begging for help on the forums when I mess something up.
Thanks though, for the insults!

lol, ah come on calling you lazy isn't an insult
For that you could try looking in the S2 forum. I don't think anyone has written an extensive Odin guide for the S3 yet, but I think it's very similar, if not the same as the S2 (just a newer version).
Same process.
Researching and reading will enlightening you. Sorry, not name calling, this is actually part of XDA rules and etiquette, and no different here than HTC forums. Anything other than that would be lazy
As previously posted, check the SGS3 & SGS2 stickies. A wealth of knowledge users (Edit: and of course the Devs) have spend countless hours putting together.

Honestly there is not a lot to mess up. Odin is soo simple compared to what you have to go through on an HTC phone.

Looking for clean ICS ROM [rooted]

I have the AT&T model and I want a ICS stock root without all the garbage apps and shenanigans AT&T forces on your phone.
I already looked around in the ROM directory and I did find this thread which seems to match what I'm looking for: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752232
Is the ROM in this link a pre-rooted ROM?
But I need to be careful to keep my phone rooted as I don't live in America anymore and I don't want my phone to get locked or I cannot receive calls.
I am currently using a stock gingerbread ROM rooted.
I recommend Task's ASOP rom I have been using it for months through many updates and it just keeps getting better.

Also would you happen to have a link that would have instructions and download links to flashing a ROM. Its been a while since I last did this and I don't wanna brick my phone.

I am and I'm getting a bit confused. If I remember correctly when I last did this all the ROMS i tried were .tar files, now they are all .zip files and when I extract the file I cannot find a .tar in any folders.
T.T
Search for creepyncrawly's guide to flashing. No offense, but you've got a lot to learn, buddy. And uh, I wouldn't post asking questions like "I want this kind of ROM" or "help me learn how to flash again" until you've read a lot, since people around here highly discourage that kind of thing. Just warning you in advance.
Fair enough,
In my defense though I did not ask for explanations in the thread, but links for me to read and figure it out myself : /
EDIT: I tried searching for creepyncrawly's guide and came out empty handed. These forum search functions never work properly, can someone just link me there?
Useful links are here. It includes creepyncrawly's guide, but I've linked that one too, just for you. Good luck!

If you're rooted you can skip to installing a custom kernel, yes. Make sure to read the flash counter though, it's important that you know how to do that.

Make sure you have clockwork mod installed, if you did not flash a custom kernel you may not have it. If you don't you may need to flash a custom kernel and then go from there. If you know how to get in recovery try to and see if clockwork mod shows up. If its the default recovery you will need to flash a custom kernel from there you can flash whatever rom you want.

This is a self-service forum. Asking people to provide links is just as bad as asking them to do the research for you. There are FAQs and Stickies that cover much of the basics and the search function to fill in the gaps. Even Google searches often return results that end up here. I'm glad you can read for yourself, so start finding things on your own and you'll get/cause a lot less grief in here.

These kinds of responses are perfectly fine and should be the norm for anyone looking to get spoon fed. If u can't take the time (I took over a week of reading before I even flashed anything on my phone) to read and search, its not fair to ask someone else to do it for you.

Same here bro, even coming from OG Galaxy S (Captivate), i read everything there was on i777 forums (stickies in general and development) before i even tried to flash anything... if only everyone did some reading... I mean I've been running custom roms since September '11, I don't think I've ever asked how to do something so simple, really tho? Which ics rom? Just read the first few pages of each thread that interests you, Itll help you and XDA as A whole. I've yet to brick my phone, I've gone thru numerous roms. Not trying to be a *****, but what you're asking XDA members to do for you is remedial...

I'm sort of in the same boat, I'm on UnNamed and now with official ICS out I'm looking at development and reading up again and it's getting confusing because I see AJs rom and it seems nice but I don't seem to see (correct me if I'm wrong) Entropy as active on kernel development and UnNamed has sort of been "abandoned" other than Ryudes project. I guess what a lot of people are hoping for is an "UnNamed" style ICS with a very stable stock based kernel, all stock flame aside, that's 100% daily driver capable. I like 2.3.4, does everything I need my phone to do daily, I rely heavily on gps and bluetooth for driving which are some of the issues I read about with the ported kernels, as well as various mic swap stuff which is intimidating to be completely honest. Does anyone know if there is work on something stock based with a DD style kernel? I know this is fairly new ground so I'm not wanting to come off as ungrateful for the work that is going on and that has been done.

I respect everyone's answers and tolerance. Please keep in mind though while this may be seem trivial to the advanced users this can be very confusing/overwhelming for noobs. I am grateful for the guidance provided thus far and can say I am making a solid effort to figure this out on my own.
I have successfully flashed the ICS ROM/Kernel provided by creepy with the help of the forum members. I did make a few mistakes though, I did not wipe the Dalvik cache or data, and did not bother performing a factory reset before hand. Either way, the phone is running fine aside from my wallpaper image not panning through desktop windows, apparently this has been discussed before; but searching the forums, google, and few pages of threads has been fruitless.

Yes, I agree that preparing to flash something on your phone when you start with no knowledge can be confusing, and overwhelming for some. There are clearly differences in how the mind works from one person to another. Some pick up technical issues fairly quickly, others (my wife, who is a musician with creative temprament, for instance) have difficulty even retaining the technical information they have already learned.
However, you flashed UCLE5 stock plus root from the OP of my thread in the development forum without first doing a wipe data/factory reset. So did you read through the text of the OP of that thread and fail to understand what was written there, or did you just not read it? If you are the type of person that doesn't grasp technical issues easily or at all, then you should not be messing with your phone. This is a ~$500.00 device which you could easily destroy if you do the wrong thing.
Or... you should take as long as you need to fully understand what you are doing, even if it takes weeks or months before you flash anything. Let go of instant gratification for once.
I sure hope you followed the OP of the thread and flashed a custom kernel. If you haven't, then whatever you do, Do Not Do A Wipe Data/Factory Reset while the UCLE5 kernel is still installed.
Further, you have started several different threads and posted in others, all about the same issue, which is very close to spamming the forums. Please make yourself aware of the rules of this place, and conform to them.
As far as the wallpaper issue, I find it hard to believe that you could search and find absolutely nothing on this. All the ICS leaks contain this bug, or feature. The new SGS III also has the exact same issue. You can set a portrait wallpaper but not a scrolling one. There are a multitude of wallpaper programs on the Google Play Store that will fix the issue. You can also install another launcher, such as Apex, to fix the issue.

[Q] SGH-i777 will not load after trying rom manager backup

I've been google searching and looking through forums for 3 hours and I'm not finding a good answer or answers close but I'm afraid to mess with it further without at least seeing if someone has a good idea for an easier fix.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 AT&T (SGH-i777) that was running ICS. I used odin3 v1.85 on my pc with Siyah-v3.4.2-nomswap-I777 to give me superuser. Phone worked fine for a day. Later I downloaded rommanager. I was wanting to make a backup of my rom but it asked me to install ClockworkMod. I went through and picked it and it downloaded/installed. Then I went to run the backup but rommanager hung and it wouldn't finish. I chose to "wait" for two times but then the third I force closed. When I tried to load rommanager up again it froze my phone. I pulled my battery out and tried to boot. I think I got the start screen with the yellow triangle and then black screen. I tried to power it on again and nothing. Then my screen did a very faint power on and off every 10 seconds until I pulled the battery out. I was able to get into the "odin mode" using the volume up/down + power. I tried to run the Siyah again just to see if it did anything but no dice
My fear was that I selected the wrong clockworkmod? I've tried finding finding the right clockworkmod that I can use with odin. I found recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxys2att.zip but I'm afraid it isn't the right thing (isn't a tar file) and so I've not done anything as a result. Does this sound like i f'ed up in loading the wrong clockworkmod? Is there a tar file I can use with Odin to fix the mistake so the phone will boot/load? I assume if nothing else I can just load a custom rom or start fresh but, if possible, I would really like to repair my mistake so I can save some files and backup apps. Thanks for any help or ideas!

WOW! You have been a member here long enough (since 2009), now I understand some of us do not post as much. But you should have seen the stickies at the top of the forum with a big WARNING SIGN on it. I guess you choose to ignor the warning... :silly:
Why did you even think of using ROM Manager when all you had to do is reboot into recovery and do it from there?
Wow...
Wow...first off thanks for being absolutely not helpful. You mean the sticky that tells me not to do what I already did? You mean the sticky that in none of the five pages of posts has an answer to my question or issue (really just a long rant about people who make a mistake)? You mean the sticky I didn't read because I was using a different (I know now in retrospect not so great) website? And I get berated because I visited this website three years ago to make one comment on a post about a windows mobile topic? Did you all get so many posts by antagonizing others asking for help and not posting much useful to the actual request? Unless I am wrong I posted in the "Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting" section of this website but from what I get so far I think it might be the "Place for snarky comments & unhelpful responses without reading a question".
In the hopes that someone wants to be helpful, I would really like to know if there is a way to fix the issue by using Odin to put the right clockworkmod recovery on the device. If so I appreciate any help on locating where I might find the right file. If this is an issue that can't be fixed and my only choice is to flash a new rom then that is helpful too. Thanks.

It's called you should research your problem before posting it. And the fact that you're trying to put cwm on there without flashing a kernel tells me that you need to do some reading up on this device before you so any kind of modding. Otherwise you'll end up with a paperweight.
Sent from my Zanpakuto using Getsuga Tensho!
+1 to nick comments. As everyone already stated. Read those links. And all you need to do is flash the kernel. It has the CWM recovery builded into it. Use AJ's siyah kernel.

Exactly. The fact that he's still saying he wants the"right"version of cwm means he still hasn't read the stickies or read enough about this device to make informed decisions. Just do some reading, and take your time. Not every device is the same. Don't want to end up messing yourself up. Which, as previously stated, could've been avoided . Good luck.

not to discredit person posting first link or the author of the first link, but STUDACRIS's link sure seems a lot easier to understand and from my experience has always been sound advice.
im sure its just me, cause I always want to play things a little safer, whether its overkill or not. I don't understand why someone would make a seemingly large leap from GB to JB in one swoop, let alone rooting the GB before hand.
again, that's just me. if Samsung or carrier is providing the unrooted upgrade, I let them take care of that leap and they are responsible, then rooting is the only thing I have to worry about not screwing up. better safe than sorry. its a marathon not a sprint.
absolutely no disrespect meant. its your phone not mine.
best of luck to you my friend.
