Before someone starts to throw things at me let me just explain my doubt.
As many of you I have been waiting for the update to 2.1 for a long time.
I have read most of the reviews that cover what changes from 1.6 to 2.1, but I see many people trying to revert back to 1.6.
I would just like to know if in your opinion it is worth updating an U20i to 2.1.
Thanks for your input.
i updated my x10 to android 2.1 for the sake of very good apps
So there are no unbearable bugs or drawbacks in Android 2.1 from 1.6?
So far we have 4 votes for 2.1, anyone care to explain what were the major gains or major drawbacks / problems after the update?
Keep the votes coming

This almost sound as a funny answer. "There are no differences, only everything changes" hehe
Rofl, I like 2.1 now after getting it to work, wouldn't want to go back tbh.

stupid SE shoud go and kill themselves
well now we know who voted against the 2.1 :=)
I should do the update tonight if I am able. Then I'll leave a comment too
My phone got slightly faster. But I updated mostly for the apps
I've just updated to 2.1 and I too note less freezes and a smoother operation. Plus I got my phone debranded and I have access to all the nice applications available on the android market.
Lets see if we can get the bootloader cracked and are able to eventually get 2.2 or even 2.3 on this wonderful device.
The only annoyance I have with 2.1 is I can't seem to get default input to stay off, something keeps reactivating it.
ok im not sure if im missing somthing or not but i have rooted my phone now i just cant fig out how to update it to 2.2 can someone help me plz

The embedded froyo 2.2 that comes with qdl too, does that work perfectly fine and flawless with AT&T dell streak? or are there some things that just don't work on there?
I have an ATT Streak and used QDL with no issues. After playing with it for a while, I took the plunge and upgraded to DJ_Steve's Streakdroid 1.5.1
If you want the best from your device...I suggest you do the same, but make sure you do your homework....search is your friend!
Meh I havent rolled to the sreakdroid rom yet lol. Im still rocking out the stock. And I think its fairly smooth.

Used the stock software for a while and thought it was decent. Went to DJ Steve's 1.5.1 and realized how misguided I actually was. It turned what I thought was a worthless device on 1.6 and a decent device on 2.2 to absolute phone/tablet nirvana on DJ Steve's 1.5.1. I will never use AT&T stock software ever again for any purpose. It's shameful that they can spend such massive amounts of time with the resources they have and only come up with that while DJ Steve can work in his free time and come up with something that rapes AT&T development. Shameful.

certainly not trying to defend the Death Star here, but thought I might correct your thinking...
ATT doesnt make roms
Perhaps not, but they sure are damn good at delaying them, and then removing features (tether) and then making up for it with useless bloat that sometimes can't be removed without cooking up your own ROM anyway...
F U AT&T
I am just glad I took the plunge with the QDL method and didn't wait for the "official" from them. It has been pushed back to January now. I am using the "stock" 2.2 and not sure I am going to Steve's, even though I appreciate his efforts VERY much.
QDL is automated? Sounds good. Does your GPS work on AT&T? Specifically with navigation in Google Maps.
Use QDL, then update from 309 (which is what is on qdl?) to the 318 version, which for me was much faster than 309

I have updated to the posted 2.2 (318) rom and everything went perfectly. I originally updated with QDL first and then to 318 (QDL put on a strange build I could not locate in searches).
Everything is good (I don't like stage ui thought), Except. . . the bluetooth dial app does not "hear" anything or it is just plain broken. I can use voice dial with the phone alone, but if I connect the bluetooth and do the long press (Jawbone Icon) to get to voice dialing, it starts up and either crashes (force close) or it sits there "listening" until it times/errors out.
The error is LogService has stopped working process (com.oem)
I have seen posts on other forums from people with different phones having the same issues but NO fix or work around.
It seems to me it must be something in the hook between the bluetooth service and the voice dial app.
Maybe someone has found a fix or a working replacement for voice dial that works over bluetooth, assuming its the app and not the bluetooth services.
sad owner of Dell Streak Droid 1.6 now happy 2.2 thanks to XDA Dev
I was ready to return my streak back to bestbuy until a friend of my show me this site. he uses an HTC so he is very good at Droid, Im a newbie by the way. Just switch from iPhone 4 to Dell Streak and Im not coming back. I was tired of waiting for Dell update so we decided to try to get the 2.2 from UK and Oh! man, we were amaze how this new software works on my Streak. I love it! Thanks guy! now you have a new member. by the way Im a business owner of a pc place Im also a computer programmer and Technology guru so I'll be sending many people your way. Thanks again.
Glad you kept it! I was pretty happy with 1.6, but when at&t/Dell opted to "delay" the 2.2 update (I think it was more at&t than Dell), I said screw it, let's give it a try. Updated to v309, then got v318 on and it's like a completely different device!
just done flashing. not sure which path to go.. official Dell 2.2 or Dj 1.5.2.
Dell is easier but heard Dj is a cool one.
I'm on 309, haven't update to 318 yet.
What are the benefits really?
Bug fixes mainly.

My girlfriend's Droid is running an older version of Bionix, I think it's 1.7 or something close to it (2.1-update1, Kernel version 2.6.29, Build number ECLAIR.UVJI6) and keeps getting a notification that an update is ready from T-Mobile. I haven't been following Android news so I don't know if this is the 2.2 update (or if the 2.2 update is even out for her phone yet), or just an update to 2.1 or what, but it's driving her nuts. Even when she postpones it it sends her several texts a day, and the max she can postpone it is 24 hours. Is there anyway to get rid of this notification? Custom ROMs for my Droid would do this by default, so I'm clueless how to fix it.
Secondly, she likes this ROM a lot, but it's about 3 months old now, have there been any major changes in current ROMs that would warrant me upgrading her phone? She is content with it as is, and I have a hard time hacking the Vibrant for some reason, though I never had any problems with my Droid. Basically what I'm saying here is, I WILL upgrade it if there's anything worth upgrading it for. Thanks in advance for any help with these questions!
Wait till bionix frost comes out and then re-flash her phone

One thing I've learned when updating the wifes stuff: if it aint broke, dont fix it. If shes happy with the way it is. Leave it. Upgrading to a better version she might not notice is onl going to cause you a headache. Some app isnt playing nice with new build, some small bug in the rom, etc. It's your funeral!

I updated my wife's Moto Cliq to 2.1 and I regret it everyday! Should have left her at 1.5...
There are a lot of 2.2 roms out there in the development section that are running 2.2 roms so smooth and fast and with bloatware removed. Try Bionix or Axura or Trigger. You don' t have to wait for ota froyo. My friend's phone did the ota update and it' s full of bugs

Can't believe I typed 'my girlfriend's droid' in the first post, I hate when people refer to every Android phone as a 'droid', and I just did it myself, LOL. Anyway, thanks for the input guys. I'll probably wait until someone builds a 2.2 rom from source and upgrade her.
So there's no way to get rid of this upgrade notification? That sucks.
When is frost coming out?

Bump, just looking for confirmation that there's no way to disable OTA update notifications?
turn off device management service using titanium backup. freeze it.
Hi,
I just bought a vibrant from ebay and waiting anxiously for it to arrive.
Meanwhile I would like to check if the official GB rom is coming soon?
If not, I will like to seek your advice a good ROM that you will recommend newbies to flash.
Thanks!
CyanogenMod 7 is pretty amazing if you are looking for a good gingerbread ROM

MIUI or CM 7 but it still in Beta some bugs and no GPS
But there a lots of Great 2.2 Froyo Roms for vibrant
Hope that Helps
If you're a true noob who's not flashed a lot before I would suggest any of the 2.2.1 roms. They are all functional and a bit better than 2.2. The only thing you'll lose is wifi calling which is a huge battery drain anyway.
Right now the gingerbread roms don't have working GPS and require a little bit more experience with flashing.
My teammate and I have the Simply Galaxy/Honey series. 2.8 is very fast and stable and its 2.2.1. Team EDT also puts out quality work and you can always count on their roms to be fast and stable as well.

yah stick with 2.2 or 2.2.1 until u get experienced enough for cm7 or other gb roms! So id listen to explodingboy70
Thanks for all the advice! You are wonderful guys!
One more thing, will Samsung update the vibrant with an official GB rom?
I read that some said it could be done through Kies?

Simply honey 2.3.3 gb.By far the best gb for the vibrant.flawless, and easy install.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
At this point we don't know when and if we're getting an official gingerbread from T-mobile. Samsung released gingerbread for the international version only - the GT-I9000. It is not completely identical to the Vibrant. It's up to the carriers when and if they release it and put their touches on it. Once Samsung releases some source code for Gingerbread, you'll see a huge jump in gingerbread development and improvements in those roms. Until then, stick to 2.2.1 like the others have said. I stick to team whiskey's roms, and every month or so I flash to a gingerbread rom for like a week to get a feel for it, then go back to 2.2.1 since I can't deal with the bugs in our GB roms for too long at once
Hi,
Finally my phone has arrived. Its already on Official 2.2 (I guessed) with Kernel Version 2.6.32.9 with build number FROYO.UVKA6.
If I want to remain like this for now (awaiting the official GB), what are the improvement that I can or should make to the phone with the current config?
eg. Voodoo , Other kernel, modem, rom?
I would give it a few days before you starting flashing etc etc. Get used to the phone with froyo, learns the ins and out of all the settings and stuff, will come in handy when you are ready to start playing.
If you haven't already, you should read the myriad of info in the vibrant bible, focusing on rooting, flashing and the things needed. I def would get a good handle on understanding programs like titanium, busy box and rom manager as all will eventually need to be used in one way shape or form.
To be honest, after my few days of learning the ropes, you should consider after learning the phones ins and outs, using ODIN to get back to 2.1 that normally comes with the vibrant (I am not 100% sure that all vibrants came with 2.1 stock, not sure if yours is the new model or outgoing model), rooting, installing titanium backup, busybox and rom manager and make a NANDROID backup of a nice clean OS so that should you run into issues flashing, you have an emergency back up to fall back on. I just did this over the past 2 days and it was a great learning experience.
I did my first rom flash today and was pretty cool, not as hard as I thought but really teaches you the ins and outs of all this cool stuff.
The ppl here were great in helping me and answering my questions, truly a great community.
My phone came with 2.1, then upgraded to 2.2, rooted and removed all the bloatware and never backed anything up. I then realized after help here, it was better to go back to 2.1, do all the right steps to root, install the right apps above, then make a nice clean emergency backup. It def will save your ass sooner or later.
With regards to changes, with my phone when it was at 2.2, I did alot to help improve battery life, I use a black wallpaper, I only turn on wifi when needed, I don't enable GPS at all. I set brightest via power widget to lowest unless in bright sun at which time, you can easily brighten it, you can change how quickly the screen goes dark, etc etc. There's alot of things you can do but since you just got the phone, you need to see how you're going to use it, in order to customize it.
Just my 2 from a beginner
Samsung won't say when or if a release of gb will actually come to US variants. I emailed them just the other day.
If you can live without GPS, then go with cyanogen mod
Sent from my badass Vibrant
I have been looking for a while and as usual with Samsung/T-Mobile the official word on GB is very deliberately vague.
I've been trying different ROMs and between my wife's Vibrant and mine, I have tried 5 ROMs so far.
Flashing some of the simpler Froyo ROMs is definitely easier and safer then jumping straight to CM7 or MIUI.
I would go with the earlier advice of getting familiar with your phone first and making sure you are comfortable with rebooting in recovery, wipe cache, etc.
One click root, back-up and re-install some apps so you are comfortable with all that.
Once you feel good, then try the simpler ROMs. TeamWhiskey - Nero is the first one I tried and it was easy to install and quite fast.
After that, went with Bionix.
Now I'm running SimpleHoney and on my wife's phone we are running DarkyRom 9.5.
All of these can be flashed through CWM which makes them simpler and safer.
Hope this helps! Enjoy your phone.
Sav
Thank you all for the replies. The advice and guidance are really much appreciated.
After one whole day fooling around, I finally managed to Root it and to install Simple Galaxy 2.8. I had some problems initially with the new 3e recovery from froyo causing unable to root problem. But I googled it and managed to workaround it.
I will play with the phone for a few more days before I decide if I want to go for the next level, GB
Go check out EDT's Asgard rom. Pretty slick.
Anyone else retaining their 2.2.2 virginity, until the "right one" comes along?
So, is there anyone else who is still simply going to wait for the official AT&T OTA Gingerbread release?

what are you guys worried about? how do you know if you right one if you dont try it?
im pretty sure ken's 2.3.4 is same as the official update thats coming, it doesnt have my testing and debug apps that are found on beta releases. if anything the "official update" from ATT is going to have more bloat and handicaps.
I'm keeping mine at 2.2.2 until the official update comes out. I know there is a slight chance it could brick and have bugs if I update to the beta build of GB.

I got my atrix about 4 days ago, and I love it. I rooted it and installed gingerblur on the 2nd day, I liked it better than the stock ROM, but then I messed up something with the messaging app (I was transferring my texts from my iPhone to Atrix, needless to say it didnt work) so I had to do a factory reset on my atrix. I did that and then Atrix no longer showed "H+" it just showed H, and the data didnt really work for some reason, so on the second night I had to flash back to stock rom.
I am just going to wait for the official release and then upgrade, I want to enjoy my atrix without a problem lol.
Btw when the official release does come and when we upgrade do we loose everything on our current phone ?
Running 2.2.2, GingerBlur.
All the permabricks going around got me worried.
Can I still OTA running GingerBlur once the official AT&T with unlocked BL comes out or do I have to revert back to a stock AT&T rom?
NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've got a Bell Atrix right now so I need to wait until something extremely reliable comes along before I toss it on for my daily driver. We can unlock our bootloader using 2nd init but it doesn't go without a flurry of bugs.
Very much appreciate the work all the devs have done, but unless I've got an AT&T Atrix I'm going to sit tight for now. Almost traded my friend his AT&T Atrix for my Bell Atrix (I sold him the AT&T one) but the current bugs in the ROMs are still a tiny bit too much. The hacked kernels are extremely alluring though!
I'm new to flashing moto style (done HTC, samsungs before) and my atrix is still very new, so going to hold off for now. Would prefer to start from a nice clean stock gingerbread + stock unlockable bootloader (ie fastboot oem unlock) baseline.
All those bricking references in the various leaked /beta ROM threads are definitely worrying. Gotta say too the much smaller dev/hacking community is totally noticeable, information appears much more scattered and newbie unfriendly relative to HTC/samsung threads, there are few authorative 'this is the 'official' way to do XYZ' sources. So still lurking and reading
I'm waiting for the official OTA. On stock 2.2.2+root+sideloading and it works fine for me. I'm looking forward to a stable CM build for the Atrix though .
Wow. Scared much?? Its really not that bad....
Im far from the smartest guy in xda but its all pretty easy and safe if you read directions and have at least three brain cells functioning
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I've still got 2.2.2, mainly because I'm waiting for CM7 or something else a bit more stable. I was almost always the first to put ken's P-roms on my atrix, but for flashing an sbf, I want to wait a bit until they're all out of "beta".
Scared? No.
Waiting for a 1.0? yes.
