Okay so I installed a gingerbread ROM that keeps getting stuck at the boot screen. Yes, I installed the radio first and took all the correct steps.
But now I'm trying to simply boot into recovery to flash my backup of my other gingerbread ROM that actually worked. I boot into bootloader and it automatically tries updating the radio and there is no possible way to boot into recovery.
I don't know what to do.
When it asks you to install update, what if you say no, then you should be able to boot into recovery from the bootloader.
Sucks you're having issues.

Take the PBxxxx.zip file off of your zip card
I was wondering the same thing; thanks for the info.

Can't we do this in adb?
"adb reboot recovery"

Like g00s3y said, you must first remove the file you were trying (or successfully) flashed off your sd card. It's always best to remove this file once youre done with it. In your case you will probably need to use a sd card reader unless you can get your phone to mount.

I got the exact same problem
I ran into the same problem last night. I hooked my phone up to my laptop which has adb installed. When you're stuck at the start up screen, in a command prompt just type:
adb devices
You should see your phone show up under devices. If it shows up, then just type:
adb reboot recovery
This will get you into your recovery, and I just started the whole process over again. The 2nd time through everything worked great.
Hope this helps. (my phone wouldn't hard boot in to recovery, which I'm assuming is your problems also)
To hard boot into recovery, just hold the volume up key and turn the phone on. (correct me if I'm wrong)
Now I went and did it!
OK, so I was loading a new ROM and something went terribly wrong. I got stuck on the HTC, quietly brilliant screen. I then tried to boot into recovery thinking I would just restore the back up I had made and for some reason it jumped right to the HBoot and ran through some sequence of commands. Next thing I know I don't have root! So I'm screwing around trying to get adb to work on my computer and having problems with that. I try to recover again on the phone (power button and down volume) and notice that I still have s-off. Doesn't that mean I have root? But I also can't find a super user on the phone and none of my 'rooted' only programs work, they all say I don't have root. What do I do now?
Hboot is vol down and power.. not recovery. What that did was look for an update file on your SD card and flashed it. When you rooted your phone did you use the 1 click root? If so you probably just need to do step 3 again.. which gives you root and the super user app.. hopefully that's all it takes. When your done go into your SD card and remove the PG05 (there's more to the name don't have the whole file name memorized) zip file that's on there so it doesn't happen again

You will have to re-root now. This should teach you to be more careful and not just go randomly flashing and updating things. Read up some more before just trying things.
Yeah probably like he said your best bet is to re do the whole process.. Idk what you flashed on your phone or anything so just be careful and do your research before jumping into things.

When flashing a new rom make sure you check the md5sum. You can do this in adb or dl a program, just google it. If the md5sum comes back with the correct number then you know the dl isn't corrupted and you have the correct dl.
But as far as your current problem, you need to re-root.
Research your steps before you do them. I'm NOT a fan of 1-click. If you do it manually, and one step seems not to go right, then stop and ask on the forums. Someone should respond.
So here's my story. I decided I wanted to root my Bell Motorola Atrix and put Cyanogenmod on it. So I went to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423 and followed it step by step perfectly - no issues. I installed the latest nightly of Cyanogenmod for the atrix without any issue it said it was successful and I let it boot. In the guide it said wait up to 10 minutes but my phone never got passed the "unlocked" screen after like 15 minutes. So I did a battery pull and tried again - same issue. So I tried reinstalling it and went through the same process of not getting passed the "unlocked" screen. I then tried recovering into my backup. Now this is where I think my problems are coming from.
After transfering the cyanogenmod nightly build zip to my phone I was pretty low on space, but I thought nothing of it. I did the clockworkmod backup and it seemed to have no problems however I noticed afterwards my phones internal storage was sitting at something like 5kb of free space left. So fast forward to now, and I'm currently thinking even though it said it worked, I think it didn't manage to backup everything so I'm left without a proper backup to restore from. (At least I figure, because it won't work.)
So pretty much I'm able to boot in to the clockworkmod menu but that's about it, and I'm not sure if I can install a new rom with how little internal space I have, is there anything I can do? :S Help would be REALLY APPRECIATED! Sorry if this is in the wrong section!!!
Right section! From within CWM, you can go to Mounts and Storage> Mount USB storage so that you can clean some stuff out from your computer. Then just try another ROM!
When I do that I can only get my external SD to show up under my computer, I can't get access to the internal memory.
Thanks for the reply!!
They should both show. Try another reboot into recovery. Why not just use your external if you have one?
Hm. I thought it installed it onto the internal storage. Or at the very least, your phone boots from the internal storage.
I'll try that and see how it goes, thanks very much!
No problem. Let me know how it goes, and hit the thanks BUTTON
I installed Cyanogenmod from the external sd (internal still won't show up) and I'm still getting stuck at the "unlocked" screen. :S

A fastboot wipe? Like going into cwm and clearing cache, dalvik cache, etc?
If that's not it, what is it?
It can be accessed by holding volume down during a boot. It's part of the android SDK. I'll find you a link in a sec, hold on.
EDIT:
I haven't personally tried this tool. Give it a shot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1314607
Make sure your phone is in fastboot mode and use the tool for option 10 (erase all).
Then retry flashing CM7 from your external sd.

Still not work. Stuck on unlock screen.
The steps I took just now were:
1. Option 10 through the tool you just showed me.
2. Boot into cwm
3. Install cyanogen through my sd card
It's weird, the first install I did took a few minutes. Ever since, each time I've attempted an install it says it's successful after like 15 seconds.
It's a small package and shouldn't take that long (15 seconds sounds about right). I'd try the latest weekly instead. Do the fastboot wipe again first.

I'm already using that one. I've tried the latest nightly, and the one that's considered "stable" on the cyanogenmod xda thread. Neither has worked.
Well the last thing I can think to try (and this is only because of your space issue): Boot into recovery again, Mounts and Storage>format all of the options there manually. Perhaps the PDS fix from the fastboot tool as well.

I'm not entirely sure if I'm using that one. Would it make much of a difference?
Well it's (potentially) the only inconsistency between what I do every day and what you are doing now. When you boot into recovery it should say up top what build it is. Mine reads "CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.7-atrix5." You should be using this one (grab it from my previous link if you aren't).
I changed from an iPhone 4 in May to the Samsung Note. On my iPhone I would immediately jailbreak and install MyWi. In my research to do the same on the note I ran across a rooting tutorial for my device and followed the instructions http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-note-att-i717-root-without-increasing-flash-counter-61325/ (I am not positive, but I feel confident this is the one I followed). I installed Superuser and Titanium Backup, did a backup of ATT connection manager, then removed it. Tethering worked like a charm. This has worked and I had no issues until Friday June 14th.
On Friday, everytime I opened an app on my phone I would get a Force Close. I restarted the phone and watched as it repeatedly happened after every cycle. Believing that installing Droid VNC Server was the issue, the last app I had installed, I removed it successfully and included others I didn’t use. Upon reboot, I noticed the notification of App Updates and a missed call. Checked the application list and noticed that all of the apps I had just removed were still there. I have a ton of pics and videos and thought that I should back them up immediately before I deleted them, prepared for the worst. I was able to do that. I deleted them all, nothing in the gallery. When the phone crapped out again and rebooted, all apps and all pictures back.
I formatted the USB Storage, seemed to delete nothing and also showed the same amount of used space as before.
Time for a restore. I know now that the recovery partition is gone and so a Wipe/reset is fruitless. No problem. I know how to flash the rom. I used this method with Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330
Everything seemed to work successfully, but upon reboot I get the same app updates notification and the same missed call notification. The same frozen state my phone was in when the issue started on Friday. WTH!
I have everything backed up. How do I get back to stock? I could care less about the counter. I just want my phone to be usable again.

did you try wiping Catche and Dav?
Wipe Catch > Wife Davlik > Fix Permision, then reboot ..
see what happens ..
Not a noob, but here is where i am lost
I booted in to recovery, chose to Wipe/Erase . I see no option to Wipe Davlik except for in SuperUser and there it is a paid option, not sure where to find Fix Permission and then reboot?
I am assuming these are all options for CWM. I attempted to put CWM on an SD card last night and install from ZIP, but Recovery does not seem to see the SD card.
Are these options that are available for CWM, if so I will push through until I get it to work, but I have had no luck to this point.

I have attempted to Flash ROMs I don't desire just to move forward. They all flash and pass in Odin but on reboot I still have my default screen. Unfortunately, I want to go back to stock. I have done plenty of research and need something more to push on to the next thing. I am looking at phone and there is not an Advanced option in recovery. I have read there are options in CWM but I am looking at what I believe is the stock recovery options.

You now have a custom recovery(according to Odin). The problem is, you're doing the wrong key combo as stated above. You can also go to the market and grab FJ's power tool. You can boot into recovery directly from the app. Good luck.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/d176blydonlvrlu/2012-06-19 20.13.42.jpg
I am so confused as to what I am doing wrong.
Unfortunately those pics aren't loading for me. Try again with the pic of recovery and the file you're flashing. Thanks. If you still have stock recovery then maybe that's what you're flashing in error.
Try volume up + down and power button. When phone vibrates, release power button but keep holding volume buttons until you are in cwm.
I would use Odin to flash cwm touch recovery from pda, then load a rom via cwm. Using that method you don't even need to root because it's all done at bootloader level and root is built in to the custom rom you flash
SGH-i717 mesosphere-remix
Dear all,
Here is the situation. I decided to root my evo 3d gsm (hboot 1.5++) today, and all went well until I flashed a rom (virtuous). Now whenever I boot on the phone, it shows me this "V" logo and loads for more than 10minutes or so. I can go into my bootloader, but when I attempt to do anything from my clockworkmod recovery, when I press the power button to select different options, I get blank menus and I can attempt nothing. I am an unexperienced user, and can anyone out there who is experience render some assistance? I am at my wits end...
Thanks
Well I'm not too familier with the gsm version... the "V", is that part of the boot animation? and does it just loop over and over? maybe try reflashing clockworkmod and re wipe and install?

The "V" is the part of the boot animation. And the "V" just glows again and again, yeah so i guess it loops. Why I am so worried is because I saw a window of my HTC sense booting to life earlier on, but I saw the words "Unfortunately... has... crashed..." but it was very brief, and after which the animation began again. Is it because I waited for too short a period of time? (around 15 minutes or so) or because it really boot looped? And how do I reflash clockwordmod when I can't access my phone and sd card? Will appreciate your kind help...
I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for something too boot, and it should really never take longer than that. Can you tell me the steps you took to flash the rom(not to root it). and could you give some more info about your phone? are you s-on or s-off? And what do you mean by blank menus in clockwork mod? Do you know how to boot into your hboot menu? from there you can boot to fastboot and install the recovery from your pc. connect your phone to the pc while in fastboot mode and get your recovery.img file and type the following command from the command line:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery /path/to/<recovery>.img

Ok, here is the infomation. I live in Singapore, which is a part of Southeast Asia, my phone is the GSM version with HBoot 1.530007(i cant remember the decimal placing).
I firstly used HTCDEV to unlock my bootloader, which went well, then I went to evohacks to get the conventional rooting method, which went well too. And it all came when I was careless, and I accidentally forgot to wipe the data and cache of my evo before i flashed the rom. And now it gets stuck in the "V" logo loading phase. If the hboot menu is the menu where I have to press the powerbutton and the volume down button then yes. I can also get into my recovery, but the problem is that it shows a blank menu in (clockwordmod specifically), thus rendering whatever me helpless. i have downloaded the PG86IMG.zip and Im waiting for it to finish. So how do I go about solving this matter? This phone is my only asset and I really want to save it...
Blank menu as in for example when I click "Reboot", or "Factory Reset" or perhaps "Restore" in the CWD Recovery, it just shows me a blank menu with the CWD logo in the background, with no options or drop down words or whatsoever. And the sad thing is that I did not make any recoveries at all.... So I plucked my sd card out, and now im waiting to finish downloading the PG86IMG.zip to put on my sd and into my phone, and flash it to revert it back to stock and stuff..... I hope this works
Ok, well as long as you can get to either hboot or recovery you'll be ok. I would recommend flashing 4ext recovery, as it has never failed me and seems to help others. here is the link to it. Download that and pull the recovery.img out and flash that from your pc with the command I gave above. It sounds like you are either pushing the wrong button in the recovery or it might just be messing up for some reason. Is it the touchscreen version of clockworkmod?

The recovery.img is the image that the phone flashes to install the recovery. If you look in the zip I posted in the link you'll see that file in there. the one I posted is the 4ext touch recovery. you can manually flash that file to your phone in case you can't get it to boot(like your case). I would suggest trying the 4ext recovery I linked, or maybe try to boot to recovery again and see if its touch based. Were the menus working when you flashed the virtuous rom, and then it stopped working?
OH stupid me. Whoops. Actually I CAN navigate. Ive been pressing the wrong button all this while. I pressed the power instead of the camera, which is the select button. Whoops. seems like CMD was working after all. sorry...
ok but still, can I just attempt to install the RUU file I downloaded in the CWD menu? Will it work? Will my phone be reverted back to its original unrooted state? I saw someone say it could...
There is something bugging me though. My SD card is now completely empty. Will it have any negative effects on what i do?
I thought something like that was happening, glad you got it sorted. Try to wipe everything and reinstall your virtious rom again first. yes the PG86IMG.zip will return you back to complete stock, recovery and all. So if you do that you might have to re-root all over again.

I would recommend trying it before you go back to stock just to re-do it all, but its up to you. yeah if you need more help just come here or pm me. glad you got it working again!
Thank You!
Oh ok! I thought by clearing the data using recovery on the phone and sd will render the root useless. Will try redoing it again. Will update you on the further details
Many thanks!

If you only wipe /data/ you will still have root. sdcard doesn't matter.

So theoretically flashing the ROM shouldn't take more than... around 15 minutes?
correct
Its now 10 minutes and so far my phone had made 2 major vibrations. So if this doesn't work, can i just wipe all the data again, put the PG86IMG.zip in my phone, go to recovery to install it, and then I just press reboot right?

Sometimes sense roms can take a bit, but if its vibrating than it should be working. if not just put the PG86IMG.zip on the root of your sdcard and boot into hboot and let it do its thing. no need to wipe data for that.
Well. It's my worst fear. Launched the DPI changer app, attempted to change my DPI (to a valid amount) and nothing happened, no big deal. My wireless connections stopped working and my shop stopped working. I downloaded a different DPI changer, everything was working except Google Play. I attempted everything then decided to tell it to "change" my DPI to default. Went to reboot then bam.
I get the following:
The standard splash with the Verizon 4GLite then it goes on to loop at the Samsung splash for a bit then loops from the beginning (4GLite).
I've tried getting into "recovery" mode but it won't go, I do not know why. (Vol up + home + power). Need help please, thanks.
(Noob alert, if you mention anything that I might need, if you could please supply a DL link to minimize any more mess ups I might make)
EDIT: I got into recovery mode I forgot you were able to remove the battery (I was panicking, I apologize) I am also rooted with 4.2
EDIT2: I've attempted a factory reset, nothing new happened.
EDIT3: I need to reflash an OS. I'm really freaking out. It says I don't have a bootloader (OS).
Bottom line: This problem kinda... multiplied itself most likely based on my own stupidity. I'm keeping it at the "Team Win Recovery Project v2.5.0.0" recovery menu because I don't even want to boot into anything. Awaiting instructions.

I saw you posted this in the att forums but I think I can help. Just download any ROM and flash it. Twrp has a failsafe now that will basically prevent you from bricking your phone if no os is detected. Do you have an external memory card? If you do transfer a ROM to your card, put it in your device, and flash it. Your not bricked.....your just soft bricked. Or you can always go back to stock. I'm sure your device thread has instructions on how to Odin back to stock. Hope this helps

So if I wanted to flash stock, I just need to put the stock rom on my ESD put it into my phone and flash it from the recovery menu? Is there more to it than that? Or do I need to do that all externally with "Odin"? Where would I obtain the stock rom? And thank you for your response.

I'm talking a touchwiz ROM one of your developers has made. You can find it in your forums. It sounds like you don't have much experience with this stuff. Did you make a nandroid backup at all?

Sadly, no. I didn't. You are correct, I am very new to this sort of thing, I've rooted other devices before (simple one click only, I'm good with computers, but not smart phones) but nothing has blown up this bad before. I've placed this rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261478) on my ESD however, when I put my ESD back in, it reads it as blank. I'm assuming I need to relaunch recover mode to refresh its directories. However I'm very scared to do that because I have no OS anymore.

Just navigate in your recovery back to your internal SD then back to your external. If that does not work then go to the reboot menu in TWRP and and hit recovery. It will restart your recovery only and should refresh what is sees on your external card. If that does not work go to mount and make sure external SD is ticked in the settings, if not then tick it, Reboot recovery again. If still that doesnt work then go to Advanced, file manager, and navigate to your external SD (if you can) and find the file you downloaded, pick the zip file and move it to your internal SD. Then flash it. Regardless of any of these steps if you can find the .zip file flash it. Then reboot. Hope that helps you. You should be able to reboot to recovery any time you need to regardless of no OS. Please keep your phone charging during this whole process. If this works then make a nandroid backup in Twrp.

Edit- If none of this works then you'll probably have to adb sideload your phone to transfer the rom to your internal SD card. Otherwise you can ODIN back to 100% stock which involves a huge download and you'll have to reroot your phone. If you don't know how to ODIN to stock then get on youtube and there are plenty of videos to help you along. The basis for the note 2 (att, verizon, sprint,....) should all be the same just a different file to download.

I rebooted into recovery. I only hesitated because it warned me I didn't have an OS. That worked, I saw the ROM and am now flashing it. I will edit and let you know if all works.
EDIT: It worked, thank you so much for your time and effort! I'm sure it's a pain dealing with noobies, I hope this helps people in the future since it's very friendly to beginners. I hope to not come back to this thread and say something isn't working properly.

No problem man. Not everyone here is a butthole. Its not a pain because I was there once too. Just make sure you run a backup in twrp. You can name it too! Just practice and read around. Watch YouTube videos (I learn by visual)
And I keep my backups on PC in case a memory card goes bad. If you wipe system in recovery make sure you flash a ROM because system is obviously your OS and twrp prevents it from booting and bricking your device. Good choice on the recovery.
If it will at least boot to something there's always hope. be sure to hit the thanks button. It always helps. Glad to have gotten you up and running. If you need more help just pm me.
