(Q) usb hosting - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know someone with this device and he is able to read flash drives with his device via otg usb host adapter. What I want2 know is that a software in the system or hardware capability or both? And can this function be ported to other devices. I am a thunderbolt user and would love this feature on my device.

It's for attaching USB devices to the tablet, like flash drives, mice, gamepads, etc.
Probably with one of these

MHL with OTG?

Is there a way to run both cables? With a splitter of some sort maybe? I've searched amazon for a cable with no luck.
Anyone on XDA know of a way?

Nope, when I first got the phone when it came out in searched that answer out for months in hope. Finally I just bought a new controller which was why I wanted it. I lucked out and grabbed a ps3 controller from newegg new for 32.99. What exactly are you trying to setup? The one thing I can tell you won't work is trying to get say a keyboard hooked up otg and use the mhl adapter.

I was hoping to hook up MHL and run a mouse actually. So I can control netflix and maybe a few games using the mouse on my tv.

Try using a bluetooth mouse to do that.

Yeah, a Bluetooth mouse a keyboard work for me when using MHL.
I would like to do MHL and USB OTG for playing a flash drive files on the TV, instead of copying it over. But, a microSD card solved some f that.
Bluetooth didn't even come to mind for some reason haha, awesome idea! Thanks guys!

I should mention for the storage bit that there are some apps that can mount samba (windows shared) folders and you can later access data using a media app and stream the data over the network.

Can't make it function
Hi guys I see that you are talking about MHL and OTG...and it seems you don't have probemlms with it on your i777.
On the contrary, I can't seem to make it work....When I plug a mouse, keybord or flash memory....NOTHING happens.
I already searched a lot....some people say it depends on the kernel (mine is Siyah 5.5.1)...some say it depends on the ROM (mine is AOKP 7.3)....I don't know which answer is correct......or maybe my OTG cable is faulty????.......
Please if you know something else that I can do to enable or anything....let me know!
Thanks in advance!
I believe you misunderstood, I explained you can use mhl and bluetooth mouse and or keyboard @ the same time. However that's not technically using MHL and otg cable.

Usb host/usb on the go

Does anybody here know if the evo lte is compatible or is working with that kind of cable?
Some places I read that is the kernel and this phone is not compatible, but other places they are selling the cable and saying it works.
Also someone tried transfering pictures using nfc?
I can transfer youtube or website links, or contacts; but not able to transfer pictures.

I have tried this with two different host cables and it does not seem to work for me (works just fine with my xoom). It sucks that they would not include this as this is part of Android since 3.2. HTC needs to fix this.
Ok, thanks for the info, I hope htc fix this soon, is a good feature to have.

Yea you can't send picture using Nfc. Samsung tweaked s beam to do it using Wi-Fi direct and I'm fully expecting Google to assimilate that into 4.1 or whatever jellybean will be.
With usb otg it's in ics but needs to be enabled in the kernel. So hopefully when the source is dropped we can get that done. Don't know why they would do that from the beginning.

Yeah I thought i saw somewhere nfc being use to transfer photos but then thats what it is. It would be nice if it was a nfc feature.
Hopefully htc makes an update to use usb on the go.

I saw that bump to send feature in the new Windows Phone 8 keynote. I'm assuming it uses NFC to initiate some WiFi connection for transferring.
If we can get USB hosting to work, that would be awesome!
Anything new on this? I sure would like to see this working on my EVO LTE...

Most basically it allows you to mount usb drives. Full functionality allows you to plug in controllers and other usb devices which the OS has drivers for. In the case of my asus transformer it allows the use of 3g dongles as well as flash drives.
Awesomesauce has OTG enabled in the kernel, but i don't know of any rom that has auto mounting baked in, i had to use a 3rd party app to mount my drives and even then it was a little clumsy and took forever to mount.

thunderbolt to jvc hd tv

how do i hook up my thunderbolt to my JVC MODEL LT-40A32 40inch TV
I'm not completely sure but I don't think the thunderbolt contains the necessary hardware or software to hook directly to a TV. Never tried it personally but if you're just trying to do like a usb connection that may work but hdmi mirroring is a no go.

Using USB Webcam?

Is there a way to connect, and use, a USB Webcam? I have it working on my Nexus 7, but thinking about using it as a rearview camera viewer.
You need otg support in the kernel for that to work. I think Santod might be adding that to his custom kernel. I will be adding that to mine as well once I get some other aspects squared away.
