The Correct Stock and Custom ROM Dual Boot Guide - Nook Color Android Development

Hi fellow nookers,
My friend (@ikingblack on XDA) has released 2 guides as of now, and unfortunately, his guides are a little misleading, and has you flashing packages left and right. Hopefully, this time I will try to get it right. I am not trying to be rude, just trying to point out that his guides are a little scant and incomplete. And please feel free to leave bad comments so I can improve it.
All right. Enough of that yucky stuff. Here's the Guide:
Requirements:
1. Rooted Nook Color with ClockworkMod Recovery (3.0.0.10 or later)
2. An SDCard that is bigger than 200 MB.
3. A Browser on the Nook that has the option of downloading to the SDCard.
4. Internet Access on the Nook is not required (NO).
5. A flashable ROM for the Nook on your SDCard
6. A ClockworkMod SDCard, which is optional but makes it easier (Especially Step 8). (search around the forums, will post link later) Please keep in mind that you have to take the SDCard out whenever you want to boot the Nook Software, and not ClockworkMod. Also, when I say boot into ClockworkMod in the guide, then you can just insert the SDCard and reboot.
Notice: Whenever I say download a certain file, it means download it to your SDCard. It does not matter how you do it, just get it on there. You can download it on your Nook, or download it on your computer and put it on the SDCard. It really doesn't matter.
Step 1.
Make sure you have a valid backup that is current. If not, make one, either through ROM Manager or ClockworkMod.
Step 2. First, download the preparation dual boot file. If you have dual booted before, and haven't removed it, then skip this download. Download Here. Then download the stock Nook ROM flashable zip, I recommend this one: Download. It is the latest version and keeps ClockworkMod. Keep in mind that the package has to keep ClockworkMod. Then download the root file if you want root: Download. Then the Second root file: Download. Finally, download the dual boot file: Download. Please remember the file names so you know what to flash. If you want, you can rename them.
Step 3. Boot into ClockworkMod, (If you have an SDCard with ClockworkMod on it, insert it and reboot.) and go into "Mounts and Storage" (Use the Volume Buttons to scroll and the n/home button to select). Then select Format /System, and select yes. Then format Data.
Step 4. Press the Power button to go back, and select "Install zip from SDCard". Then select the second option or something and browse for the first downloaded, or the preparation dual boot file, called prep-dualboot-0.1.zip, and select "Yes". After it is done, repeat Step 4 except with the second downloaded file, or the Stock Nook OS file, called update-nc-stock-1.2-keepcwm-signed.zip.
Step 5. If you have the ClockworkMod SDCard, take it out now. Then reboot the device by going back (can be achieved by pressing power) and selecting "Reboot Device Now.
Step 6. It should boot into the Stock Nook OS. Follow the setup procedure. Keep in mind that you need WiFi.
Step 7. If you want root, then reboot into ClockworkMod. If you can't, or don't know how, then use the 8 failed boots method. 8 failed boots means boot it up, and before it reaches the logo, (The pulsing B&N Nook Color) shut it off holding the power button. Even though this takes long, I don't know of anything else.
Step 7 for ClockworkMod SDCard users: Just insert your ClockworkMod SD, and reboot! Simple.
Step 8. Flash the second file, or the root file called ManualNooter-4-4-278.zip. Then Flash the second root file, called apk-enabler-1-1a-signed.zip. Then if there is anything else that you need to flash, then flash it. Please keep in mind that as of now Dalingrin's kernel should not work with it unless he releases an update. I haven't checked this, so please correct me if needed. After you are done, flash the last package, the dual booter, called eclair-dualbootv2.zip or something. Then reboot and hold the home button when it says multiuboot loading. It should load the nook os.
Step 9. Then download Rom Manager, from here: Download, and then install it. Flash ClockworkMod by tapping the first button, and selecting Nook Color (not Nook Color (old)). Then reboot into recovery.
Step 9 for ClockworkMod SDCard users: This time, you will have to flash ClockworkMod onto your device. Just follow normal Step 10.5 (Not for
ClockworkMod SDCard users).
Step 10. Reboot into ClockworkMod again, via Rom Manager. When it is in ClockworkMod, then insert the SDCard where you have the backup and the Custom ROM that you want to dual boot. Once you have inserted it, go into Mounts and Storage, and select Mount SDCard. If the option says unmount SDCard, then you are good to go. Then flash the ROM that you want dualbooting, and any other zip that you want on the non-stock or custom ROM. After you are done, then go back, and select backup and restore. Select Advanced Restore and select your latest backup. Then select restore data. Once it is done, then you can reboot and it should reboot into your custom ROM (if you didn't hold the home button on boot).
You are now done! When you want to boot into the Nook OS, hold the home button when you power on and the nook says multiuboot loading. If you want to boot up your custom ROM, than don't hold the home button. You can also now get into ClockworkMod by holding both volume buttons when it says multiuboot loading. Please do not hesitate to post with complaints, improvements or the like. Thanks! I want to improve this and my knowledge in every way I can.
EDIT - I updated the guide on 4/29/11, and I might have made some errors. Post if you find any!

Nice guide!
Yeah, better than mine I guess. Nice guide, once again.
Also, my guide just is not easy to understand, not incomplete.

Good guide.

Worked for me...
The only issue was that after step 6 I could not get back into Clockwork and couldn't get the Rom manager apk to open.
I used a Clockwork bootable SD card with the 1.2 apk updated zip on it and that worked well for me.

Step 5. Once you are done, go back again, and select "Reboot System Now". It will boot into the stock Nook OS. It will ask you to setup your device, so go ahead and do it.
Step 6. If your Nook does not have internet at the current moment, and there is nothing that you can connect to, then hold the volume up button on the screen with the video. While holding it, tap the lower left of the screen, then the lower right. A button titled Factory should appear, and tap on that. Then while still holding the button, then tap the lower left. A button called Skip OOBE should appear, tap that and you should be at the homescreen.
Step 8. Flash the second file, or the root file called apk-signer-1a.zip or something. Then if there is anything else that you need to flash, then flash it. Step 9. Make sure it boots by going back and rebooting. If it doesn't boot hold the power button until it turns off, and power on again. If it works, than you can try downloading ROM Manager (Here (The first link) and rebooting into clockworkmod. If it doesn't work, than repeat step nine.
Step 9.5. If you have used @rookie1's dual boot method, than skip to step 10. If you haven't, then flash the file you downloaded in Step 2, the Prepare Dualboot file called prep-dualboot-0.1.zip.
Step 10. Flash the last package, the dual booter, probably called eclair-dualbootv2.zip or something. Flash it . Then reboot and hold the home button when it says multiuboot loading. It should load the nook os. If it loads correctly, then reboot into ClockworkMod again.
Step 11. Flash the ROM that you want dualbooting, and any other zip that you want. Then go back, and select backup and restore. Select Advanced Restore and select your latest backup. Then select restore data and restore data only. Once it is done, then you can reboot and it should reboot into your custom ROM (if you didn't hold the home button on boot).
You are now done! When you want to boot into the Nook OS, hold the home button when you power on and the nook says multiuboot loading. No, I'm rooted. The issue was that I was unable to boot into clockwork after flashing the 1.2 zip that was supposed to keep clockwork intact. Since I hadn't flashed the root file yet I could install Rom Manager and flash Clockwork that way.
I just used a clockwork bootable microSD with the new Auto-nooter (and with the files from the OP on it) and flashed everything from there until I was rooted and could install ROM Manager. Worked fine and I'm dual booting Phiremod and rooted nook 1.2.

@ad720
I'll update the guide.

can't get phreakmod to boot, just loops
First off, thanks for the guide. It was a great help but I failed to make a backup of my rooted stock ROM and had to start all over again when I got to the end and had to restore the data only
Also I couldn't boot back into clockwork after loading 1.2. Even the 8 reboot method had no effect on my nook. I did some reading and came to the same conclusion as ad720 at about 1am last night and finally got it booting but couldn't get phreakmod version 6.1 to load. It just loops on the phreakmod boot screen. I was able to get the v4 of honeycomb and my stock rooted ROM to boot but no other ROMs seem to work.
I do have another question though. How do I know which ROM I am backing up with clockwork, or does it back up both ROMS as a dual boot backup?
Also, I want to keep my stock rooted nook for magazines and books but run phreakmod or maybe a newer ROM, do I have to go through the entire process again or can I just load a new ROM without screwing up my stock ROM?
Lastly, somehow mine ended up backwards, if I hold the "n" I get honeycomb, if I do nothing I get stock, which is fine at least it works, but I am not sure how it got reversed, I think I must have reversed a step when phreakmod wouldn't work and I had to redo it with honeycomb.
Normally I'd just keep messing with it until I got it figured out but I have already wasted well over 12hrs getting to this point so I have decided to breakdown and ask for assistance.
Any help or insight would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

If you are fine with what you have, then you are ok. If you want to get CyanogenMod 7 or Phriemod with stock on a dual boot, then you will have to follow the guide again. I suggest you erase data, and system and then flash Phriemod. The backup problem is probably because you have an old version of Clockwork Mod Recovery, so try updating it via Rom Manager (Downloadable from the link in the op or from the Market). To update, just launch the app and click Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, then choose Nook Color, not Nook Color (old). Then, again from Rom Manager, tap "Reboot into Recovery" and then tap ok. After it reboots into ClockworkMod, then try your backup. Post if this works! If it does, I will put it in the op.

There are a lot of extra and unnecessary steps in this guide.
I did the entire process without having to reboot once last night, and didn't follow any posted guides except the original dual boot eclair guide.

Like what? If you would provide me with what could be removed, that would help a lot.

I have a question about backing up your rom when you boot from the SD card is there a process to do this?

working on it
Thanks for the quick reply. I have updated CWM to 3.0.2.8 that didn't help.
I reinstalled phiremod and it still just looped. I downloaded ver. 6.0 and tried that and it still looped.
I then wiped and started again this time with phiremod first and I'm sitting here watching it loop. Strange.
I'll keep trying different things and hopefully with report back with what worked for me.
thanks for the input.

[Q] Flashing Recovery

I've spent my entire day trying to flash a recovery image on my streak to no avail. I've rooted it using the super one click, have superuser on my device, along with clockworkmod.
I've confirmed my device is rooted using z4root.
I've tried flashing the recovery via clockwork, it says it was successful, yet when I reboot to recovery, I always end up in the regular OS, like all it did was reboot. Furthermore, trying to manually get there, holding down the buttons, tells me that the stanard recovery wasn't actually overwritten. When I go through fastboot and flash it that way, both computer and streak tell me that everything was successful. Yet, the recovery was still not overwritten.
My end goal is to put Steve's ROM on the streak, but I can't even get the recovery overwritten with clockworkmod.
I have a Dell Streak OEM:340. Thats the locked ATT version, which I think might be a part of the problem.
How do I end up with Steve's rom?
Sounds like you are using ROM manager? That does not work well with the Streak. See this article. ROM manager may actually flash your recovery, but does not work to start the phone in that mode.
You can flash the recovery image to your phone in fastboot mode. Here is a tool to help.
You get to fastboot mode by starting the Streak while holding the camera and power buttons at the same time. Then select fastboot from the top right of the screen and plug your phone into your computer. You will need the Dell drivers for this.
Also be aware that you need to rename install-recovery-sh to something else to prevent the stock recovery from being installed when the phone restarts. It's in the folder /etc. You have to use root explorer or an alternate method to do this, but it requires root.
I am using a ROM manger, but if that doesn't work as well, I'll stop.
I've been fastbooting it the majority of the time, flashing the ROM, but it says I've done it correctly, even though I obviously haven't. So far, all I know is that it's been rooted, and the recovery flashed via fastboot.

Have you renamed the install-recovery.sh file so that the custom recovery won't be replaced by the stock recovery when you reboot? If not - do so.
Make sure that the Streakdroid rom you want is in the root of the SD Card along with the install.txt file.
If you can get into fastboot mode and connect to your computer I suggest using MultiRecoveryFlasher Streakmod recovery. You can reboot the phone from there also.
When you reboot you want to get to recovery mode. Turn your phone off then press the power button tile the leds light up and as soon as they do hold down BOTH volume buttons. See this gallery for what Streammod recovery should look like. Selecting the #2 option will take you to the streakmod recovery options. You use the "apply sdcard:update.zip" to install the ROM.
See the release thread for the ROM you are installing for more info and post any problems or questions you have with the ROM in that thread.
I have not renamed the install-recovery.sh file. in fact, haven't seen one through the process. To be honest, I'm not sure this part has been done at all by me. How do I go about doing that?
Furthermore, choosing the second option in recovery doesn't give methe streakmod options, it just tells me everything will be erased (stock Dell recovery). How do I make sure that this gets corrected?
For the record, marvin02, thank you thus far for the amount of help you've been giving me.

The file install-recovery.sh is a script that runs each time your phone is started. It will replace a custom recovery (streakmod) with the stock recovery when your phone starts, so the next time you enter recovery mode you are back at the stock recovery.
If you are going to dstay with a stock ROM, but want a custom recovery you have to rename the file. The easiest way (IMO) is to use Root Explorer which is an app you have to buy. You just open root explorer and the open the folder named etc and find install-recovery.sh long pres on it to get a menu to pop up and then select rename.
You don't have to do that to get a streakdroid rom installed if you enter recovery without letting the phone restart first.
Put the streakdroid rom file and the install.tx on the root of your SD card
Turn your phone off
Turn phone on in fastboot mode (camera and power buttons at the same time)
Use this tool to to flash the recovery you want
Using the same tool you can reboot the phone
As the phone reboots (wait for the leds to turn on just like they do when you restart the phone) hold down BOTH volume buttons to enter recovery. If you let the phone boot normally and you have not renamed install-recovery.sh the custom recovery will be over written.
Select option 2 and you should be taken to the streakmod options (images here)
Select apply sdcard:update.zip from the recovery menu
There will be two options on the next screen, select the one that lets you navigate to/select a file and then select the ROM file you put on your SD Card.
The ROM should install, be patient when it reboots it can take a few minutes.

[Q] [Solved!] HELP!! How to unbrick my tablet? - fix inside

I am one of the lucky ones who got their tablet from woot/amazon for $280.
I got it in yesterday and absolutely hated the Tap Tap interface.
Naturally, I wanted to install a new ROM. I could only get the TnT Lite to install, but still not what I wanted. I tried Vegan and G-Harmony and I got the dreaded 3 bird screen. I downloaded and successfully installed 3588 and rebooted it. I noticed the ClockworkMod is no longer on there, which is no problem.
I followed the directions to install Clockwork and ROMS from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
I, for some reason, decided to install Vegan again w/o clockwork installed.
I mounted the internal memory card, copied he ROM over as update.zip with the Recovery folder and the command file set to install from SDCARD. A reboot later and now I am stuck at the 3 birds...
I was able to do the Power +Vol and get the "Recovery key detected" message and it seems to load something, hitting the home button gives me the verbose which indicated that it was trying to install something off SDCARD2.
I have tried 3588, clockworkmod and Vegan as update zip on the external SD card with the Recovery folder command file pointing to SDCARD2.
When booting into Recovery, the verbose says: "FORMATTING MISC... REBOOTING..." takes about 4 seconds to complete, reboots and back to the 3 birds screen.
So, how do I [email protected]#$ myself here?
UPDATE!
I got my tablet to boot into CWM!! I ended up putting the MicroSD version of CWM and held down the Power +Vol longer that normal, saw the Android text and it installed the update.zip.
I tried in vain to boot into CWM, but it would re-install the update.zip. *Head smack* took out the SD card and now it boots into CWM!
Now, to try to install a ROM w/o those damn 3 bird screen...
Bootlogo not part of a ROM
You can replace the birds logo, but it is not part of a ROM. Search for replace boot logo, but make sure you know the correct partition to push your custom logo too. Read the entire thread when you find it first. There are tools out there that will let you back up your partitions, I highly recommend doing that first. Search for backup bct and look for PooR's thread and tools.

The boot logo is not my issue, it's just that it does not go past it no matter what non-TnT ROM I try to install.
I just want to install anything other than the factory OS or a modified factory OS (no disrespect to the dev who made TnT Lite).
I started another thread on my troubles getting a new ROM on there:

Issue with recovery freezing

Recently decided to try and switch over to CM10, and have been having an issue with recovery. Both of the latest CWM and TWRP recoveries freeze for me after booting into them. The only recovery that works for me is the one that is flashed with the old app by Indirect but that flashes a really old CWM recovery. The recoveries that I have tried flashing are the ones linked to in the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877217 thread. Both http://celticstorage.co.uk/cm10/CWM_v6.0.1.5_emmc.zip and http://celticstorage.co.uk/cm10/TWRP_v2.3.1.1_emmc.zip are doing it. I have a 16GB that ive kept (rooted) stock forever.
What happens is i go to boot to recovery, go through cyanoboot to recovery, and then CWM freezes up and blackscreens after I try to wipe something or install a zip, TWRP just locks up immediately and gives me a black screen. Any help fixing this would be greatly appreciated.
Use this thread to install CWM, I'm not a fan of TWRP. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25786947 I used this and had no problems updating

This has been happening to me occasionally. I have found that when I get the black screen, pressing the Power button launches Recovery (CWM in my case). See if that works for you.
I now have the exact same problem. I've always ran off emmc. It says cwm 6.0.1.5 is installed. When I try to either wipe, or install zip-from-sd, cwm freezes then goes to the black screen. I cannot install any zips, so right now the tablet has nothing installed only a freezing cwm recovery it seems. I can use the power button to get out of the black screen and into cwm thru cyanoboot all day, but get nothing but these same steps reoccurring. Freeze, then black sod. I'm ready to try anything but cannot flash anything.
To the rescue
Ok, I have posted this on a different day. Try this with a blank sd card. Look at the bottom post called "Here is a video"
It a external boot cwm v.5 but you can copy this into your sd then flash and you have cwm v6.0.1.5 internal. Either way you have two ways to do recovery (external and internal):victory:

Well, I think I need to clarify more. Maybe somebody can help if I give more info. I've had cm7 running perfect, then decided to install cm10. I first flashed a cwm 6.0.1.5 zip to emmc. I did a factory reset via this recovery thinking my next move would be to flash the cm10 zip I'd put on the sd. No joy. This is where I'm at now.
In recovery it freezes and reboots to the "2 androids" screen with a sod. I hold power for 20 sec.s to turn off, then turn back on and get to cyanoboot fine. There, if it's allowed to just boot it freezes at the 2 androids. If I hold "n" to get the menu and recovery (6.0.1.5) it looks normal, will boot to recovery OK until anything is selected like the cm10 zip. It freezes before any selections can be finalized, and boots to that sod screen.
I know nothing of ubuntu! Sorta scared to go there with my limited knowledge. But will read up if it's required. Is it possible that this new recovery image don't play with what is currently on the sd? Is there anything I can put there that it may recognize in order to get a flash? Man, I'm lost!
Look pass the fear and go one step at a time, before you know it, your there.
It looks like you have already resolved this from this thread.
Ok, basically I'll go step by step.
1. Download ubuntu iso from ubuntu website (you can donate or put 0$ then download iso) and burn it to cd. 5 minutes
2. Stick the cd into a system that you don't plan to look at the video that is showing you the process and boot it up from a reboot and not from within windows. Select the left square which basically load the ubunbu from cd but does not install anything to your hard drive.3 minutes
3. You can view the whole video but I would skip to the section in video (3:28 watch to 4:43, 6:56 watch to 8:06 ) where I mentioned the setting the two flags in your sd after quick format fat32 and extracting the four files into your sd within ms windows platform from the post . I did this with a normal mini sd card adapter and not the usb stick adapter he used in the video. Since you are doing this to a blank mini sd then there really nothing to worry about since it is blank in the first place. 2 minute
4. If you had your apps backup with titanium backup then it still will be on the main mini sd and not the one that working with for this recovery.
5. I notice you did not mention wipe dalvik cache from your post. You should always wipe dalvik then wipe factory then do a single flash to test boot up.. You can flash gapps after a successful boot up into jellybean. (here's a video showing that I'm using external cwm v.5 even though its recommended to use v.6 .) You can always use cwm v.6 on your next cm10 test rom or use cwm v.6 to reflash to same rom once a successful boot up have been obtained with external cwm v.5. This purpose is to get it running on your nt.
6. Be patient for the first boot. Should not be more than 5 minutes max. It will look black then load. If it boot loops then wipe dalvik then wipe factory and do a single flash to test boot up again.
This will at least get cm 10 flavored rom on to your nt.

Got it back! Thank you for your help & patience. Also for the timely responses. I now have a bootable "recovery sd card" for curing these type problems. I've labeled it & filed away for any future borks of this kind! And I have cm10 up & running stable.
Thank you!

[Q] will not boot into recovery

Hi,
I have a rooted (using Indirect's method, I believe, with help from Albert W.'s video) Nook Tablet 16GB. I'd like to try a custom ROM and installed GooManger (1.2.1). I can download a recovery file (openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.1 -blaze.img), and it says it installed it, but when I try to boot into recovery ("Reboot recovery" option) it just reboots normally. If I try to browse compatible ROMs, it says "No roms were found".
Googled but could not find an answer. I would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction!
Thanks,
Pat

I think you're trying to use the wrong recovery file. Try downloading CWM or TWRP from the links listed in the first post of this thread -- I've used both with no problems on my NT.

Removing CM9
HELP! I installed CM9 on my nook tablet 8gb and I am not happy with it. I want to take it back to stock so I can load CM7. HOWEVER I cannot find a single website with this information. I keep trying to power it off and then hold the power and n to no avail. The cyanoboot menu just loads and I cant load any of the ROMs. Its really pissing me off and I would like to just get rid of this os. Can anyone help?

You don't need to go back to stock to downgrade from CM9 to CM7. All you need to do is boot into recovery and flash the new ROM. With that being said, it would be well worth your time to start by installing Titanium Backup and backing up your system before you do anything else... That will let you restore any apps you've downloaded and want to keep (along with their settings and data), which will eliminate one headache after you flash the new ROM...
Review this thread from Lavero.Burgos about installing a customer recovery on your tablet. You've already got one installed if you're running CM9, but the thread has got lots of really good info, and if you have the Clockwork Mod 6.x recovery installed, you need to replace that with Clockwork Mod 5.x to flash CM7.
Next, check this thread from Celtic Web Solutions. The link to the internal CM7 ROM is in the first thread, along with the instructions for installing this ROM to your emmc (internal) storage.
Now, when you start you tablet, instead of holding Power + n to boot into recovery, wait for the Cyanoboot splash screen to open (the one that says CYANOBOOT, not the animated CM9 splash screen), then press and hold the n button until the boot menu appears. From here you can select to boot normally into CM9, into your internal recovery, or into a recovery.img loaded on your SD card. Select one of the recovery options, and you should be able to do a nandroid backup of your device, then install CM7. Since you're changing to a completely new ROM, I strongly recommend that you do a factory wipe/reset as well as wiping the cache partition and Dalvik cache.
NOTE: There's a big difference between an Titanium Backup backup and a Nandroid backup! You'll want to do both as you go through this. Titanium Backup will take a snapshot of your apps (including the settings and data associated with them) that you can restore after installing the new ROM. Super helpful, since you don't have to re-install everything from the Play Store, nor do you lose data like savegames, etc. Nandroid runs from recovery mode, and will do a complete image of your system, including the ROM. It protects you in case you run into a major problem while flashing a new ROM -- it's saved my life a couple of times...

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 SM-T580NZWAXAR Root, Xposed, Unencrypted Permanent for TWRP

I'd say I'm above average when it comes to rooting and installing ROMS, but this one has be stumped. It may just be that I simply need to flash the stock ROM and try again, but here's my dilemma.
I successfully installed the correct version of TWRP for my tablet, as was I able to root it, but Xposed posed an issue. Upon flashing Wanam's custome Xposed zip, I am got the dreaded "Encryption Failed" screen. Assuming that Wanam's custom Xposed zip is what I need, because I'm using a Samsung device, what might I have done wrong? I have now formatted and wiped everything and am back to the setting up the device run through, but TWRP is still installed. If I do need to flash the stock ROM (firmware), I can't because I have not found it when searching here or Google.
If anyone has successfully installed TWRP, rooted, and installed Xposed on this tablet, I beg of your assistance. Also, a link to the stock firmware would be amazing.
EDIT: I will add that after I was able to get back to setting up the tablet and no longer facing the "Encryption" boot loop, as well as flashing Wanam's Xposed uninstall zip, I no longer have root and flashing the Chainfire SuperSU does not give root, but brings back the "Encryption" boot loop.
EDIT 2: I have found the stock firmware for this tablet. I found it on two file hosts. One is the well-known RapidGator. The other is an obscure (to me anyway) filehost called Alfafile. I am downloading it from Alfafile because RapidGator makes you pay for their premium service to download a file this large (1.6 GB), but the speed is awful to say the least. Once I download it, I want to share it. Where could I upload this that it would be available to everyone without paying a premium price, a site we are allowed to link on here??
Success... at last!
I did download the correct stock ROM (including boot.img, recovery.img and system.img). It was found as XAR-T580UEU1APG1-20160905144918.zip located HERE. This is the correct stock ROM for this device.
Before trying any of these steps, make sure you have installed the latest Samsung drivers. It may take a few minutes during some of these steps for the drivers to install. If at any point during these steps Windows has a notification that it is installing drivers, stop and wait until the drivers are finished installing. I noticed that a "Gadget Serial" installed when I connected my tablet to Odin in Download Mode. If that happens it's fine, let the drivers install before moving forward. Also it should be noted that this was performed using a PC with Windows 7 Professional.
COME WITH ME ON MY JOURNEY TO FREEDOM!
1. Boot in stock recovery
Hold Volume Up button + Home button + Power button
-OR-
Power off, wait for battery charge screen to come up, the hold Volume Up button + Home button + Power button
2. Wipe data & Factory reset
Press the Volume Down button until wipe data/factory reset is selected (highlighted/colored), then press the Power button, on the following screen use the Volume Up button or Volume Down button to select Yes and then press the Power button, once your screen is back on the main screen where you started, continue to step 3
3. Boot to Download Mode from stock recovery (do not boot to Android OS)
Press and hold Volume Down button + Home button + Power button
4. Odin, prep for flash and connect tablet (latest version, v3.12 at the time of this posting)
Open Odin and click options, then uncheck Auto reboot, and finally plugin your the USB cable into your tablet and PC. Once Odin recognizes your tablet, the far left box under ID:COM will turn blue and the Log tab will say "Added!!"
5. Flash TWRP custom recovery (twrp-3.0.2-0-gtaxlwifi.img.tar)
Click the AP button and find where you saved the TWRP zip.
Once the box next to AP is checked, click Start, if successful the Log will say "Successful 1 / Fail 0".
If this was successful, move on to step 6. Note that you don't have to unplug your tablet from the PC, just close Odin.
6. Boot to TWRP recovery (do not boot to Android OS). This step can be a tricky one and requires good timing. It is important to do these steps quickly.
From Download Mode, press and hold the Volume Down button + Home button + Power button (the Download Mode combo) until the screen goes black, then immediately press and hold the Volume Up button + Home button + Power button (the Recovery mode combo). You must switch from the Download Mode button combo to the Recovery Mode button combo before the Galaxy Tab boot screen appears. If you're too slow, you will have to go back to flash the stock ROM back to the tablet and start back at step 1.
Once in Recovery Mode, swipe the bar at the bottom of the screen, tap mount, and verify that the box next to Data is checked. Once that is verified, you can flash the SuperSU (SR4-SuperSU-v2.78-SR4-20161115184928.zip).
If you had not already copied it to your tablet, you can do this now since Windows should recognize it and allow you to copy the zip file to the table. You can also copy it to the external SD card if you have one and flash from there.
Once you have the SuperSU on your tablet, tap install from the main TWRP screen and then find it (you may have to search the folders), tap on it, and then tap install. If you are wanting to flash Xposed (xposed-v87.1-sdk23-arm-custom-build-by-wanam-20161125.zip), or the boot image patcher (no-verity-no-encrypt_ashyx.zip), do not check the reboot box. Just swipe and flash SuperSU. Once done, go back and select the Xposed zip and flash. Once it is finished, go ahead and reboot, unless you also want to flash the boot image patcher to remove encryption. If you do, install, flash, and then reboot system.
NOTE: If you are going to flash all 3 (SuperSU, boot image patcher, and Xposed) do them in that order.
7. Confirm your work
Once Android is booted, check the SuperSu app and you'll verify you're rooted. Go ahead and reboot into TWRP recovery and you're Data partion is mounted and unencrypted. Now go ahead and install Xposed Installer (XposedInstaller_3.1.1.apk) and you're ready to download and use Xposed modules.
I followed these steps and have my Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (2016) (Model SM-T580NZWAXAR) rooted, unencrypted (data partition mounts in TWRP recovery), and Xposed framework installed flawlessly with no boot loops, no lost Data partition, no Encryption errors, and no hassel. All credit for the mentioned files and part of the steps to achieve this go to those that the credit is due. My contribtion is merely my journey and this 5 times tested, yes, I completely wiped and formatted my entire device and did this method 4 more times after I had success before writing this, to help others that might be frustrated for days as I was.
:victory:FREEDOM!!:victory:
Thanks for this, I'll be looking to root my tab after the holidays.....:fingers-crossed:
Hello!
Would someone be so kind and explain the following sentence to me:

Why should it be necessary to flash the whole ROM again?
I know that many ROMs reset the recovery to default, if TWRP hasn't patched the system, but then it should be enough to flash the custom recovery again.

When flashing the custom recovery, your Data will be unencrypted until you boot to Android OS.
In order to have an unencrypted Data partition, you have to follow these instructions in this order. If you are too slow and boot into the Android OS, you have missed the step and Data will become encrypted. Going back to Stock will once again reset the Data partition to unencrypted in order to properly make it permanently unencrypted.
Anyone unencrypted Data partition is needed in order to flash SuperSU, Xposed, the unencrypted method, or anything else in TWRP. The only exception may be flashing from external sd.
Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this should answer your question.
Wow thank you worked so well best of all guides

To achieve this it is sufficient to format data partition in TWRP before flashing files, see https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...ifi-galaxy-t3437666/post68154208#post68154208

Thanks for the info. I do welcome improvements to my instructions. I want to emphasize that these steps were the steps I took and that I figured out these steps on my own because there were no other instructions available that I could find. I'm always learning and growing!
