Triggers ROM has it, Simply Galaxy has it too
Im sure Bionix does as well haven't checked though

Triggers I have found as the best. I wish they would override the power menu when camera is running though. That would make it so much better
I know this thread is dead, but in case anyone gets here looking for a hacked camera (low power, power button shutter) I used the Fascinate CWR zip found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949566
Basic as the camera app gets, but does the job.
PS I can't find any of the lighting (daying, incandescent, flourescent) settings in this so find something else if you really need those from the stock app.
Simply Galaxy has it.
Bionix 1.3.1 does, hacked camera from SGS tools. Maybe you can find the apk and install it separate?

It let's you take pics by clicking the lock/power button, and you can zoom by pinching, but I think all cameras have pinch zoom....

4.1.9 didn't work for me.
It didn't hack the camera. It didn't remove startup/shutdown sounds.
The camera hack lets you take photos by pressing the hardware power button instead of shaking your photo trying to press the onscreen 'shoot' button. Only thing is that the sgstools apk linked in this thread does not seem to actually contain the camera hack. At least not as of five minutes ago. Which is too bad cuz I really want it back after upgrading to Nero 4.1.
Anyone have a solution for this? I tried using the Captivate camera which is the one that this Rom brings but the zoom is not working. Found the camera for the stock vibrant but it wont let me install it? Any ideas?

Don't be that way. I assume you went to advanced settings and checked the volume rocker to zoom. If it's not working, then I assume you went to their site and reported it and didn't just assume this thread would fix it
Ive been searching for this for a while, i would like to be able to use the volume up button for my shutter in the default camera app. I saw some threads about this but either it wasnt compatible with my phone or it didn't work. Does anyone know of a mod that will do this for the AT&T S2? Thanks

It's easy, but I'm not sure if I like it. I like using the volume buttons to zoom in and out. I was able to make long pressing the power button take pictures, but it also pops up the extended power menu lol. Hopefully I can figure out how to get a short power button press to take pictures instead of turning off the screen. It's a lot trickier on this phone than it was on the original galaxy s and infuse.

I've been using the volume up mod that I found from the i9100 forums for about a week. Used it quite a bit on my visit to Alcatraz over the weekend. It has tap to take direct picture or hold to focus and release to take a picture.The digital zoom is useless to me as all it does is just blow up a cropped imaged anyways. I'll attach it in case anyone wants to try (and as always, back up the old Camera.apk). Just push/copy to system/app

Yeah, was more worried about zooming with the volume buttons while recording 720p video. It would be a pain to record everything in 1080 and then run it through video editing software to do the zooming.
Guess I could do the volume button hack for photos only and leave it as zoom control for video recording.

I didn't think about the video recording part. BUT! I just gave it whirl and surprisingly enough, the volume keys don't start the recording and still function as zoom buttons. So it looks like the video recording part is untouched.

Awesome mod. I've been missing a physical camera button for awhile now! Pretty awesome thus far, however, I always get a force close on the camera app after I restart my phone. Anyone else encounter this and or find a solution other than reinstalling the app to make it work?

Same thing was happening to me but I fixed it! In root explorer go to system/app/camera.odex and rename the camera.odex to camera.odex.Bak
then reboot and it should be GTG!!!
Forgot: May have to reinstall the modded camera.apk after too as well.

I've got the zip file downloaded but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. Stock is running real well for me and really haven't seen a feature that is a must have in a custom rom yet. Shoot, with Entropy's DD and stock rom, my phone is still blazing. Just to test things out, I've gotten a 5034 on quadrant so things are working awesome.
If this were my X10, I would be a flash whore because that thing needs optimization just like a crack head needs his next hit.

Yes there's a thread floating around, I can't remember exactly where it is. But use root explorer and edit the shutter.ogg file iirc

Wasn't this made not changeable *atleast within the default app* because of something that happened in Europe. About no spy camera shots or something.. They wanted the noise so you couldn't take hidden pictures. Or something along those lines..
So if thats for Europe chances are they will include the option to disable it in the US varient right?

I've tried /dozens/ of times - it simply doesn't work for me.
To disable the shutter noise you need to delete the audio files, which requires root access.
Is there a way without deleting the files? Just replacing the apk so I can have an option of sound out not sound?
you can use pretty much any of the other hundreds of camera apps in the market. most of them will correspond to the volume setting of your ringtone so if you set the system sound to silent they will have no shutter sound.
my least favourite thing in the whole world is shuttersound, except in burst modes.

thats beacuse in s3 you have to hold both buttons one or two seconds.
you can do it too by dragging the side of your hand through the screen from left to right
The sad part is that because of a few people that deteriate the gene pool, we have to put up with that damnable shutter sound.
Thing is, if we replace the camera with another one on the market, which one would be better - the built in one or the market one? Does the built in camera app make those great shots or the hardware?
Open Root Explorer - Navigate to /system/media/audio/ui
Mount R/W
Rename shutter.ogg to shutter.ogg.bak or just delete it.
To undo, just rename it back

My friend is a pro photographer and whenever we go to parties together he always hands me his camera (nutter like, handing a drunk sound guy a 5 grand camera setup) for the night and i make things like this....

To mute camera just mute the phone with your volume buttons.
Screen shot still works with Power and home button just push and hold them for a couple of seconds.

Thats why it wasnt working for me, I was just pressing them together..i didnt hold them down for the 1 second. Thanx for that hahaha I kept trying over and over and didnt know why it wasnt working

This solution is quite widespread online but many people say it doesn't work for them.
I can confirm it's working for me - 16GB, pebble blue, Vodafone, UK - but it seems different markets can't stop the shutter sound this way.
Is there really no way to disable it without root

Is there a flashlight app that I can run in the background and use the video camera at the same time? I want to record videos at night and can't find a torch that does this

"Tiny flashlight + LED" did do this when I had my Dell streak and recorded a few videos with not much light. I've not tested it on the S3 and I have a low battery so can't now. Just turn it on and press your home button to leave it lit up and then try the camcorder.

It just says "Camera Failed" when I try open the camera up, is there a way around this?
Stock widget "Assistive Light" works perfectly with stock camera/video app. Tested now with leaked DLI5 version.

Just use the stock camera app, set it to video and then set flash to on. When you press record, the flash comes on and stays on until you press stop. Same feature was on the SGS2 and gingerbread.
