As the heading states, I'm wondering if those of you who have the SGSII would give us your impressions of the camera, especially the still photos.
Some of the best camera phones, past and present, include the Nokia N8, Xperia Arc, Xperia X10, Satio, Pixon 12, Omnia HD i8910, iPhone4, Nokia N86 and Nokia N95. How would you rank it compared with any of these or other devices you've had experience of?
In comparison to my Desire the camera is remarkable. The rear camera is clear and sharp and rather vibrant. I've always liked my cameras vibrant (it's why I'm a Nikon man) and I'm pleased with the shots produced.
The front facing camera is average as you'd expect but it's miles better than the Vga jobbie found on the iPhone 4.
Here's a couple of random images I took. I'll upload more later.

What about shutter speed ? How much time between shots at maximum resolution if you're taking a few in quick succession.
I have tried SE Arc & it has a very very impressive Camera.Thinking the same for SGS 2.
The video recording is the best ive seen yet.. Pictures are awesome too.. Lots of detail.

the camera does not have a burst mode but has a sports mode or panorama mode. at this mode i think the burst rate is about 2-3 fps. with single mode it was about 3-4 shots on 5 sec
i think its more: how long do you have to wait before you can move on single picture shots
additionally: is the panorama mode limited to low rez like on the SGS ?
The shutter speed is almost instant much like the HTC Sensation. It takes the shot and there is then a 1 second delay before it previews and you can take another.

One of the samsungmob!lers jrin made a review and mentioned panorama shots:
http://www.jrin.net/2011_04_24/samsung-galaxy-s-2-in-depth-review
There you can see the unedited photo and if you watch the video, you will see how it works. Unfortunately, it seems to only be 400pixels high.
yeah same as galaxy s 1.3mp or so, makes panorama ugly
with the power of the sgs they could have taken much higher rez pano samsung why! lol

I agree, it is a strange decision by them. However, since the power is most definitely there, shouldn't a simple software hack be able to remedy this situation?
i hope so
now.. need to get the sgs2 to work on that ;-)
Am still waiting for mine, but from the pictures I've seen from reviews and you guys, it should at least be as good as my old i8910, which is what I'm shooting for.
I'm a big "mobile phone photographer" and my daily device is the N8 right now, but I'm dying to get back to Android. The SGSII will be my daily device, but I'll be keeping the N8 for holidays.
I owned an Arc for about a week, but returned it because I was so disappointed by the camera.
Keep your impressions coming!!!
An interesting side-note to the camera quality discussion - Phone Arena just slammed the camera of the Xperia Neo. In contrast, in their preview of the prototype SGSII, they gave accolades to the sharpness and detail of the SGSII camera, even in low light.
While the Arc and the Neo are acclaimed to have the best cameras on an Android phone (ignoring Altec), since release, they have been slammed hard by reviewers citing "average to poor performance" in low light conditions and a lack of detail.
While we're waiting for GSM Arena's review of the retail SGSII, most of the reviews published to-date are very positive on the camera front. Although none dare say it's in the same ballpark as the Nokia N8. <sigh>
can anyone plz upload some samples of front cam. both outside n inside plz

Could you upload original to dropbox or somewhere else?

Comparison shots of Xperia Arc and S II
All pictures taken in auto-mode. HD recording on S II is very good but I like the pictures Arc takes. They are all spot on acurate colors while S II looks washed out. I also took several indoor pictures of my kids and Arc again excels. I think by tweaking settings on S II we can get better pictures than it takes in auto but I'd rather leave auto on phone.
I've been using Arc for over a week and Galaxy S II from this morning. I am finding hard to choose between the two. I like the HSDPA+ on S2 as you can see in the speedtest pictures and also the front camera will be handy when we finally get GoogleTalk with video support. But I like the style and very clean UI of Arc along with the true colors the screen is displaying. Also, the LED notification on Arc is a big plus for me but I am not too sure if I will keep it yet.

WOW, Arc pic !!
it looks like the arc pic's soc does quite a good job even if the colors look a bit fake, the light is better for sure

Thanks. It is worth it if you are considering it. Its very nice to walk out into a nice clean carport and not get dirty feet lol. My kids can sit down now and move around out there. I have maybe $130 invested in it and at minimum added value to my home.

The blur is probably because a phone's shape doesn't lend itself to taking a shot AND holding the phone still. Also, the sensor is teensy tiny, and it doesn't have a very fast "shutter speed". So, it's like taking pics with an SLR in dim light with a 1/30 second shutter: it's going to have motion blur w/o a stand. If you want crystal clear shots, use a vise/stand of some kind.
Maybe Canon's or Nikon's next pro-sumer DSLR will make/receive calls, texts, and play Angry Birds.
I use CameraZoomFX which lets me prop the phone and 'tell' the camera to take the picture hands-free. Those shots are always very clear. Handheld shots, not so much.

Oh will be nice to have a call with a 70-200 2.8 in hand
Okay, I'm lost....
Can anyone who still had pics prior to the leaks and NOW have one of the leaks post comparison pics? I mean seriously, as crisp as the photos are on GB, I can't see how there's such a need for enhancement to the razr's photo quality that it warrants a full thread. lol I'm still on a totally stock GB rom (anxiously biting my nails waiting for the update) and I'm ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHED at how crisp and detailed the camera's photos are.
Lol. Calls will be short with that lens on there. It would be funny though, seeing how huge people's arms get from holding a 4 kilo phone all day. They'd look like hermit crabs.
yeah its with ics leaks .204 let me look at my fb pictures maybe i got one with GB
i found one with GB
BTW - I've tried all of the "pro" camera apps available, and Camera FV-5 is easily the best one.
As to pictures on ICS vs GB, at least on .79, there isn't a huge change. It's all in the app you use.
The stock camera app on ICS seems to focus better prior to capture.
A good camera app should be able to take the same quality pic on GB as it would on ICS unless there was a flaw in the camera drivers under GB, which I don't think there was.
The Razr seems to have a decent sensor, but cheap / small optics. Don't get me wrong, it does take pretty good shots, but not like you'd see on a newer device with bigger, higher quality lenses. The sensor is only half of the battle, but people give the megapixel count all of their attention.
Some of the newer cams (like the OneX) have better optics and you can tell the difference right away. Plus a bigger lens helps keep noise down in dark shots.
I want to have a thread specifically for discussing the camera but not necessarily for just posting pictures. I have found the camera to take really good pictures of motion.
Here's link to a review of the camera that sets the one against the S4 and iPhone 5.

It's funny how people stress over the smallest differences, and it's amazing how good camera phones have become over the last few years.
I chose the One because I feel it's the most flexible overall due to low-light performance and the ability to better capture motion, but man, all of these cameras are so good, it's crazy to think what we were using just 2 or 3 years ago.
Hmm, i actually found it to be opposite for me - my htc one seems to do very poorly with motion and focuses very slowly. Surprisingly because every literature mentions its good low light performance and fast focus. If you guys can answer a few questions for me, it would allow me to determine if my hardware is defective and i need to exchange for another copy:
1. if you try to focus on a moving object (say a child or a pet), can you consistently get non blurry picture? i find it very hard/slow for the htc one's camera to get focus, so it makes a clear pic of a moving object very hard
2. can you take a picture and have the entire picture be in focus? for me, the lens will only focus on one part of a screen, while other parts will consistently be blurry. by default that's in the center of the picture. it almost seems like you can't do an infinity focus, something needed/preferred for landscape and group pictures. I like the brokah look, just not ALL the time..
Thanks in advance!
1st- I had my kids spinning on a tired swing, not super fast but they were swinging in a circle and spinning and I was able to get consistent focused pictures.
2nd- Yes my camera focus is fine. the HDR mode does tend to wash out in bright light and makes it look a little out of focus.
Note
I also took a series of photos as fast as my finger could click while my daughter was on the tire swing and they all came out in focus, maybe one or two out of focus but I would have to go through them and check more closely.
Hmmm, i'm both happy and sad to hear that your camera seems to work much better. Okay back to AT&T store then!
Thanks!

Digital zoom is bad. I suggest NEVER using it. Crop the picture later if need be.
I guess this would be a decent thread to ask, since we're talking about the camera.
Is the camera software OTA update already included with the AT&T One's latest software, or are we already behind in terms of updates? Also, if our phone doesn't yet have the updated camera software, could we just flash an international stock ROM and get it? International ROMs work with our One this time around, as far as I know.
I believe the update software version is 1.29...mine says 1.26...

You're right. The 1.29 firmware is included in some recent custom roms, though. I have a couple of roms based around that update.

The latest OTA from AT&T has the same radio as the 1.29 update. Still 1.26 firmware though.
When I take macro shots of documents, the letters are blurry and bad in quality. Taking macro shots of food and flowers comes out okay, but it's just awful when taking photos of black and white paper.
On the pic I attached, the lower right appears to be blurry and light ink. They are actually very dark black letters printed out from a laser printer, so I don't know what's going on.
I have 1.29.401.13 base.
Here's another photo where sides and corners are unusable. This is just horrible... Can't even read the letters any more.
I was comparing the camera vs my s3 and looked at my table with my one and it took this for a picture and my s3 did not do the lines

I tried that, and it just boosts the contrast producing lots of noise, and there are still blurry letters. I think there's something seriously wrong with the camera.

I've seen a lot of cell phone photos but this phone is the best I've seen so far. Take a close look at the attached photo and you will see amazing clarity, true-to-life colors and a long depth of field. It is comparable to a photo I would take with my Canon 40D SLR camera.
I'm blown away.
Aside: Some of the detail is lost because XDA compresses the photo a lot. But you get the flavor of the photo from the attachment.

Excellent picture.
And I'm damn envious you went to the UCLA/Kal game. I had to miss it last weekend. I like how the picture clearly captures fans in the stands and the players on the field during warm ups. It looks like you are sitting in the lower level of Section 1 where the UCLA players exit from the tunnel. Very nice.
Well done with the pic. I hope to use the Note 3 camera the next home game against Colorado.
GO BRUINS!
RIP #36
I was taking low light pictures last night and came to a few conclusions:
1. Pictures came out a bit grainy
2. It was hard to manually adjust the focus point. The camera kept auto-focusing on the candle instead of the people regardless of where I tapped.
3. Viewing angle wasn't as good as the iPhone. [I took a picture with a 4S and Note 3 in the exact same location and had to lean back like crazy to get both people in the shot]
Aside from this, I've totally fallen in love with the Note 3 from my migration from the iPhone 5. I am however concerned about the camera performance and am crossing my fingers to hope that there are settings and things that I need to do to get a better picture quality.
It does however take amazing pictures when there's enough light.

Well, yes, it's an exaggeration. It's not as good as my EF 70-200mm f/2.8L lens. But look at the white balance and color reproduction on that photo. It's pretty true. And it didn't cost $2,000 either. And, that "L" series lens is quite bulky.
Read this article by Trey Ratcliff, my favorite photographer, and I think you'll agree that the days of the SLR are dead.

Those are good points, but that article you posted compares DSLR's to the Sony NEX7 (an excellent 2/3rds camera. I'm actually thinking of buying one) not to a vastly inferior camera phone.
I agree 100% that our new phones take decent snapshots for a phone, but for dim light or fast action shots (or both combined, like my sons nighttime football games under the lights) the DSLR still remains king and will for some time to come.
Just one problem is, the ridiculously large depth of field from these little fixed EF 2,2 lens guaranties you will never be able to blur the BG at all, (unless you PP every image after the game)
I love the fact that the cameras in these phones have come as far as they have. There is NO WAY I am carrying around one of my Canon EOS1D Mark II bodies and a 100--400 F 2,8 L lens but I always have my phone with me,
I hope I'm not taking this thread off on a tangent, but this thread reminded me of an issue I've been having.
I've notice that the Note 3 takes a while to actually process photos. I will take the photo and then the phone will tell me that the photo is processing. The processing can take up to 3-5 seconds which isn't helpful if you're trying to take multiple shots in quick succession.
Does anyone know why this happens? Is there a way around it?

Hi Everyone, this post is not to hurt anyone. i respect all developers and everyone who contribute to this Forum
i have flashed Cloudy Pro II V1.2 rom on my G2. Everything was perfect ( one word amazing) but my only worry was Camera. i have a strong feeling that the camera has lost image in depth quality and clarity in images. i dont know which MOD was added to Cloudy Pro 1.2 rom. but still i have flashed Jishnu's & Xdabbeb Camera Mods. But the result was the same.
so i though of removing the camera apk that came with rom and tried to replace stock camera, but i failed (unfortunately stopped error) - may be the reason could be this Rom is based on G Pro 2.
i started asking suggestions everyone what's needed to be done to come on Stock 4.4.2 Camera with this ROM. but everyone suggested Xdabbeb & Jishnu's Camera. so finally i thought of a real comparison with stock camera.
though these mods are capable of more features like 4k/magic focus etc, my main concern was image quality
All Left images were taken by LG G2 Stock 4.4.2 Camera.
All Right images were taken by LG G2 Cloudy Pro II V1.2 with Xdabbeb Camera Mod.
Pictures were Clicked with same settings on both phones
Can any one suggest me how to mod Stock G2 or G Pro 2 Camera in Cloudy Pro II ROM......please i love this ****ing awesome ROM

I like right one more. Better white balance and reflections.
camera mod
yeah the right one looks better in my opinion. Also the only thing I don't like about this camera is that the auto focus is slow, there is no option for continuous focus.
Hey so I had a question so you tried both xbaees camera mod and jinushus camera mod. Which was better in your opinion than the stock cloudypro 1.2 because auto focus is really slow for me.

yeah both are great Mods you dont really feel much difference. i say that give a try for both of them
i liked Xdabbeb ones better than the Ones in Cloudy Pro II ROM.
The picture on the right is underexposed loosing details on shadows, has much more chroma noise than the left and it is more bluish. Were the lights yellow where you shoot the pictures?...
The camera in all smartphones really sucks...

I can not make a judgement here because the right pictures are underexposed... :cyclops:
One point that much people confuse is about white balance, they think a picture has correct white balance if the whites are white and this is wrong (except for studio shoots), the correct white balance is when the picture is near to the real life, so the left should be better.
I think you should test again the cameras in two situations, night and day, in day with some trees, grass and sky and the most important thing, you should do a correct exposure compensation (brightness in stock camera) in both shoots, in the day shoots, try not to use auto WB, I dont use auto WB even in pro cameras.
For taking pictures, I recommend to use Camera FV-5 with banding disabled, is the camera application I like most, you can do exposure lock and focus lock separately, I dont like to use a camera app without that functionality.
What the mods to is to decrease the shutter speed and increase the ISO so it can capture moving objects in darker scenes without them getting blurry. This can result in underexposed pictures and more noise which seems to be the case here.
Better on left. Accept it guys, those mods dont do anything good. Imho

The statement in red is wrong, the increasing ISO increments noise as you can see in the pictures, if you increase speed and ISO respecting the equation of exposure, it will get correct exposure.
Another important point, users should try to avoid increasing ISO if its possible, increasing ISO has bad impact in the photo in noise, color rendition degrades and dynamic range diminishes as ISO increases .
You can not do magic with the LG G2 sensor, its the same crap you will find in every smartphone.

Main problem for everyone is that LG G2 Camera is way more capable of iPhone 5S but the software provided by LG Screws it up
why don't you try HDR SNAP Camera to see how capable is LG G2 camera
I just flashed xdaba cam mod and its amazing now.

Hey guys, many of us have received this great device already, now it's time to show how great (or not so great) pictures this device can make!
It could also help other people make their choice whether to buy it or not.
Please do not upload the image on XDA itself, but rather use a site like imgur, tinypic, imageshack, imagevenue to upload your pictures.
When you upload the images on XDA itself we won't be able to see the image in it's full glory, because the images are being compressed, hence losing their quality.
Thank you.

Ok so I went out to take some pictures on one of the last few warm and sunny days of this year:
I first made some macro shots in the garden (I used a macro lens)

I forgot 2 pictures that I made with backgrounddefocus:
As far as the camera goes... is it as good as it should be with that high a resolution? Probably not. Is it better than most smartphones? Yes. Is it the best? Probably not, but it will definitely do the job for any of the poor souls (like myself) coming from a Moto X.
Not bad at night, although noise reduction is crazily heavy-handed, as I've come to expect from Sony.

Strangely the bokeh effect in those pictures makes it looks as if the picture is sunken into my monitor, kind of like a 3D effect.
I've not had that effect so strongly with other bokehs. :cyclops:

Not bad at all (I shudder to think what pic the Moto X would have produced haha). What settings did you use for that shot? Auto? Manual? 8MP? 15 or 20MP?

IIRC, auto at 8MP.
Honestly, though, Sony really needs to get a grip on their JPEG processing and/or allow RAW output. I don't question that this is among the best sensors in a mobile phone out there, but I miss Nokia's much better processing algorithms.

I'm not a photo expert or anything AT ALL!
But that's the complaint I've been hearing most of the time. Sony is one of the leaders when it comes to DSLR's and Compact camera's, but yet their Android software is lacking some things.

Their JPEG processing for their Alpha cameras isn't too good, either, which was just one more reason for me to just shoot in RAW when I had a NEX.
They are not artistic shots, but I found it after my iPhone session. For me looks pretty good as taken by phone camera.

I hate when people come from Dorset ... Only because it makes me jealous lol ... I've had a lot of great holidays in Swanage.
Here's a few pictures I took, nothing special, subject wise (other than my dog ) but I was happy with the quality:

I'm pretty sure that I've read every review and comparison review of the Z3 camera. My conclusion is that the Z3c has the best camera for a phone it's size (except iPhone 6 which probably edges it out slightly). Expanding the comparison to larger phones, the Z3 camera is comparable to the S5, which has a very well reviewed camera. Each has strengths and weaknesses but end up as a tie overall. For someone who is very into photography though, the Z3 does offer more control, if desired, than the S5, so the photographer will likely prefer the Z3.
That's my summary from having looked at tons of reviews and comparisons and is consistent with the findings of dxomark: http://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Sony-Xperia-Z3-New-Sony-flagship-Smartphone-tested
With that said, this comparison review does a good job of showing the weaknesses of the Z3 vs the best the Windows Phone has to offer.
http://allaboutwindowsphone.com/features/item/20150_Camera_head_to_head_Lumia_9301.php
The DxoMark scores for the phone cameras are actually quite close, still with the edge to the Z3 overall though. The Lumia video abilities really drop their combined score though.
As long as you're expectations are reasonable (this is still a phone not a DSLR) I think you'll be happy with the Z3c, I have been so far. It's among the best cameras currently available in a phone
Wow. I need more photos sample and reviews. Please!!!
