Very simple, flash through CWM just like you would any other ROM.
1. Download
2. Place in Root of SD
3. Go to CWMR
4. Install zip
5. Choose zip
6. Yes
7. (Optional) Wipe All
8. Reboot

Wipe all ....do or don't? What are the benefits of wipe all?

I personally don't wipe, but people say that it ensures a safer more proper flash. My phone's just fine and I didn't wipe when I flashed the modem and kernel.

Can I download the new kernel to my phone I don't have a laptop at the moment?

Probably... but over 3g? it's probably gonna take HOURS.

I have wifi that's pretty fast will that work?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App

I've downloaded a whole rom with poor signal in less than an hour so I don't see why a kernel would take so long.
Sent from xda app on vibrant running Trigger 2.9.2 with overstock 2.2.1

Wait, you're downloading a kernel...you'll be fine then.
Just move it to the root of the sd card.

Another Question when u say download to the root of sd does that mean my external sd card?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App

yes........i believe

Does this method apply for flashing a modem too?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App

yea it should be just like flashing a rom

Modems and kernels both flash in CwMRecovery just like a rom. Both need to be placed in the internal sd just like a ROM to flash. Although I keep a copy on my external sd and my pc for backups and recomend u do as well.
You can download them directly onto your phone but your chances of getting a bad download go up. To ensure a good download always use a pc with a known good internet connection. Good luck!=)

Flashing any kernel?

I'm led to believe that you can't flash any kernel with any ROM. Is this true, or can I flash any Vibrant kernel with any ROM?

Yes its true. You can flash any rom/kernel combo of the same os such as froyo/froyo or gingerbread/gingerbread with the exception of MIUI and CM7 kernel which will only work for those roms.

So say for example, if I were to flash the Platypus kernel while on MIUI 1.5.27, it wouldn't be a problem?

as long as the kernel is labeled with CM7/MIUI in the title, then it's safe to flash to a CM7/Miui rom.
OK thanks.

How would I flash a kernel in recovery? Do I rename the kernel to "update.zip" or just leave it as is and "install zip from sdcard"?
clockwork recovery?
if so then it doesn't really matter
Name will be irrelevant when you flash from recovery. As you stated, just go to Install from Zip, then Choose Zip file, then pick it out. No specific name is required. "update.zip" is only required when you are trying to initially flash CWM Recovery onto your phone. Otherwise, files for ROMs, Kernels, Modems, etc. can have whatever name as long as they are a .zip file.
And SGS Kernel Flasher, free on the market, is easier.

Cwm offical support

CWM added photon as supported device. I flashed cwm via app and now my recovery is all blurry. I don't know what's going on with it. Any one else please post ur finds. Can still navigate using volume buttons. If yours is like that just remember the top option is reboot device. It should reboot just fine.

Do you have a Photon or Electrify (not that that should make a difference)? Were you able to reflash the working version you had before?
Sorry I don't have any answers, but this does interest me. Might want to make/move thread to General Q&A or Devolopment as I wouldn't think this is a themeing question (plus you might not get many views in Themeing).

I posted here cause this is themeing and app section. I just posted as fyi.

I can confirm that flashing cwm via rom manager makes cwm blurry and skewed, but otherwise operational.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Fix. Reflash cwm zip via rom manager.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Well I'm getting a "Failed to boot 2" error now when I try to boot into recovery.
Reflash 5.0.2.7 in moto-fastboot mode.

Hey has anyone had problems flashing Rom with the CWM clockworkmod. I tried to install one of joker new CM9 rom and it wont boot. So I tries to wipe everything but that didn't work either. So I flash the old ,zip file for cwm and it flash the rom for me then.

I used cmd and flashed .img file from scratch; everything works again. I'm sure a update is probably on the way until then I'll wait. I think jokerax11 is updating cm9 today hopefully to beta keeping.

How do you flash it through rom manager? I'm trying to help my brother out in another state so I can't do it for him. I did mine through fastboot so I haven't messed with rom manager yet.
just have him search xda for cwm 5.0.2.7 its a zip file so he can flash from the app.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
Actually ...ummmm. That didn't work once I tried it.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
i went all the way back to stock to be safe. but now all is well i just wont update it
Yeah...just had to reflash the CWM using the fastboot cmd method...I'd really like to try the CWM Touch Recovery once availble..that'd be SIIICK..

gingerblur to ics cm9...is it safe to go directly?

yea i wanna know if this can work...obviosly with full wipe on cwm before hand or is there something that i may have to do also.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
Yep. Just full wipe before.

It depends on the process you use and what CM9 based ROM you choose. If you format /system, and you use a non-Aroma .zip, you need to flash twice in a row. More help and info can be found in the thread of the ROM you choose.
ok im using this method and files from this vid

I dont have a computer....i need a flashable one through recovery
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Saurom is your only flashable GB build in this section..
Check the super thread at the top of the general section, and scroll down to the roms.
Read "carefully"....before flashing...
Saurom is a loaded version of 2.3.6 with many extras ....I like it ...g
Hmmm. Do you happen to have a backup of your stock ROM (gingerbread). From before you flashed a custom ROM? If so then all you need is the stock kernel and modem. I have a flash able zip for the stock recovery I can give you, but no longer have the kernel and modem on hand.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Well, your only other option is trying Saurom. Its about the only GB ROM you can flash. Otherwise you'll need to find a computer you can use to use Odin and follow the steps in the link I posted above.
