Screen brightness hack? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently got a Fascinate from a friend and love it so far. I am running the comrom. I have installed a new battery and cleared battery stats.
I would love to be able to lower the screen brightness to extend my battery life.
I had a og droid with ultimate Droid rom on it. My battery life was easily 2 x what it is on my Fascinate.
Tips or opinions?

I have that turned down already. I downloaded an app called Screen Filter that claims to save battery on oled phones. I am testing it now and I will start a new thread if it works at all.

I'll second screen filter for massively lowering brightness, I use it at night so I don't blind myself checking my phone whennim in the bed.
Materialized into existence through the act of observation.

I also use screen filter. Very handy at night in the dark. Even with lowest brightness, I set screen filter around 30% . This is a very bright display

I usually keep the brightness low and go into task manger and kill the apps I am not using. You could also turn the gmail, facebook, twitter, etc. sync to once a day and just check them manually. That together saves me 15-30%. Maybe you could get the extended battery as well if you can spend money.

Thanks for the screen filter suggestions.. in the cm 6.2 rom its nice to be able to change the screens color with a filter..there is a red mode that works great at night..its one of my favorite things with this rom. It saves battery like no tomorrow since its only using black and red for lighting.

[Q] Green power vs. Juice defender

Does anyone use Green power or Juice defender app on thunderbolt, and if so is it really saving battery life and are they working ok .
I couldn't ever get juice defender to work.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
All those apps... Battery, Task Managers, etc are nothing but a farce. Fundraisers.
IMO
I believe that both work from my experiences. I have both but only tried Green Power on the TB. I am still determining how well it works for the TB. I used GP with the Incredible and I was quite pleased. I have the paid version and it allows for night profiles which is nice. The difference for me between JD and GP was ease of use- both are very good and very tweakable but GP was about as simple as it gets.
I will have to give that a try which one do u reccomend
I've been using juice defender for a while now and it works great. It basically just turns off your data while the screen is off, except for every 15 minutes (or whatever you define) it turns on and checks for push notifications. saves me a lot of battery life. I tried green power but I was having some issues with data not being turned back on after I turned the screen back on. DroidTh3ory - I agree that task killers are unnecessary fundraisers, but these data switching apps have a genuine use and do work.
Try super power. It's the same as juice defender. Works great.

Me neither. It got an error every time I tried to run it after getting my parameters set up.
i use green power pro and its great.
Green Power did not work well with my TB for some reason. Once I turn the screen on, I lost WiFi and Mobile Network, and could not get it back unless I rebooted the phone. Tried Juice Defender Beta, and it works much, much better. The latest release of JD Beta even fixed whatever TB issues it had, which was why I uninstalled JD Beta in the first place in favor of GP.
I don't have a thunderbolt, but I love green power. I started off with Juice Defender and found the free version way too limiting. If you want proof that green power works, run juice plotter with it for a day. With juice plotter, you can clearly see 3G being turned on and off at exactly the times you specify and the resulting increase to your battery life.
Anyone having issues with Juice Defender should download the "Juice Defender Beta" version from the market. It worked for me.
Currently using JuiceDefender on the ThunderBolt. They finally fix the problem with the ThunderBolt on the last release. Is working VERY good so far today. I'm at 11hrs/22%. I had 3 may be 30mins calls today, two 15mins video calls and normal txt, web browsing.
ran both of em, the one that was kinda cool and shut of wifi and data when inactive was nice, other than that they kinda blow. To be honest all you need is a nice all that can find detect the brightness arround you and adjust the screen accordingly, for me it's what is sucking up my batt.
Coming from a BB, I discorved there was a light sensor on the storm in the LED area. In the engineer settings that you could get too by some special combo which some1 made a keygento access it. *Hidden dev section they locked it out w/ a time sensitve code* It measured the light in lux, if the tbolt has something like this it would be nice or have the front faceing cam turn on in the background for the shortest time possible *under a sec* to measure the light every XX seconds.
Had Juice Defender with Ultimate Juice on my Thunderbolt and it kept stopping on its own without me knowing. Switched to Green Power Pro and it works flawlessly with my Thunderbolt and yes, I do get better battery life while using it. Just sometimes you need to turn it off to be able to download data. Hope this helps.
Juicedefender didnt work for me until yesterday...it updated and has worked great since
have tried green power and juice defender on mt4g..really the only thing that matters is that they stop data from being collected and used all the time...both work well, i like green power better because its far more simple..but for someone who wants to tweak to the optimum level, juice defender has more settings...

the thunderbolt has a light sensor too, but i have no idea if its possible to access its settings to adjust screen brightness.

Auto-brightness or manual

What gives you better battery life - keeping it on Auto or setting it manually to a lower setting?
People say auto brightness affects battery life because it utilizes CPU power. I call shenanigans on that though because it will use very little CPU power... I vote AUTO.. cause if your out in the sun and your settings are set to low... You are just going to tweak them to accommodate your needs.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I have mine set on auto, but it doesnt dim or brighten up.
Bet it does! just when it needs to brighten and dim, you never notice. I thought the same thing until I played with it for a while thenI noticed it working.
auto eats more power, but it does what it needs to.

It uses more power to make the display brighter. Think of it like those 3-way light bulbs. The lowest setting is like 25 watts, the middle 50 watts and the brightest is 100 watts.
There is a widget that lets you change it manually between 33, 67, and 100% brightness with the touch of the button. I have that on my 2nd screen (along with WiFi, GPS, etc) and keep it at 33% most of the day every day.
I use auto due to ease and I easily get through the day without charging. I do use manual if I am in a dark room b/c auto just doesn't seem to dim the screen enough.
I like the 3 setting Brightness widget also. I like to set it where I prefer, didn't really care for auto. Don't know about battery savings with either one.
Is this a stock brightness widget or do I have to get it in the market?
I keep mine low...
24 hours later... 55% battery.
I use battery level its a small widget to change every 25% its great my battery is amazing Im at 58% after 12 hrs using 25% the brightness level and of course WiFi always on and turn in mobile network when I leave the house which saves me SO much battery
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I always run mine at 100% brightness. I don't care about battery life. I prefer a bright screen.
Using a widget is probably no bad but I just auto , come on the phone was made with the sensor for it and it doesn't use much battery unless you have it a t 40% or lower all day long and struggle in the sun. I been using in auto since the iPhone I changed it for Android but i went back to auto cause it waste time just to change the setting everytime and annoying too

It's a stock HTC Widget, but they also put powerpanel in there. I just think the HTC widgets look nicer.
I wished the auto brightness function had user-defined options. I agree with it being way too bright at night.
I have been using the 3 setting brightness widget/button. Usually always leave it on medium till I'm at home with the wall charger then I use max brightness.

The best widget I've tried is Brightness Level made by Curvefish. You get easy access to preset levels, a slider to adjust brightness to any level, and enable or disable auto brightness.

it would be nice to find a widget that sets a daytime and nighttime level. i use tasker but i think it's just too big of a program for just this one little thing.
I shut off my auto brightness off yesterday after a few hours to see if it made a difference and set my level to 40%. I don't know if it was a fluke or not but after 13 hours when I plugged my phone back in to go to bed, I was at 63%.
That is a huge difference from what I have been seeing. I am going to see how it turns out today with the same setting but I must say it is looking pretty good so far. After 2.5 hours with some texts, a little web surfing, some theme changes and emails and I am at 93%.
I will post back my results later tonight. I am also using power control plus which has a brighness widget that you can set to a percentage for each hit. So in case I need fill brighness, one click and I am there. Another click I am back to 40%.

Render effect, is it bad for our phones?

I like using the render effect night mode during nights because the screen is too bright in the dark even with the dimmest brightness.
will it have a bad effect to our phones when used for a long time?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Is render effect like screen filter?
If you are using the blue effect for an extended period of time then maybe. The blue subpixel has the shortest lifespan compared to the other subpixels colors so the brightness of your screen may decrease a little over time. This is in the case that you are using blue only for a few hours every day.
Red should be fine since the subpixel is theoretically supposed to last fairly long. It also consumes the least power after black, but makes the screen look pixelated due the pentile subpixel arrangement.
what about the night mode? It's a little brownish.

No dude!
It is recommended for battery savings. The red mode is the best for battery.

Well because i froze a ton of samsung and att bloatware and ive seen no improvement on my weak short battery life. I mean 4:30 hrs on battery with 3:01 screen on and im at 15%.... maybe the system is looking for the disabled apps??? I dont know..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
3 hours of on screen is why your battery drained. Doubtful it's removing system apps.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I've seen really varied battery life. The screen is the number one battery drain on our phones so I use my brightness as low as I can get away with. Monitor your battery life day to day and see if screen percent battery usage even when used for 3-5 hours should start to show closer to show 20-30% of your battery usage vs the likely 50% or higher you may be seeing now. I use a third party app to lower brightness even below our normal GS3 brightness when I know I'll be surfing or using the phone an extended period of time.
Common battery conservation knowledge consists of simple things like disabling GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth when possible. Limit or turn off sync when uneeded. Turn off led lit touch buttons if you get used to menu and back where they are. Turn off sprint network optimizer (sprint only) it seems to scan networks too often leading to too much battery discharge for me. Turn location services off if not used often certain ones not GPS effect battery too. Uninstall bloat which you did. Turn options in apps off not to sink.
Check battery usage during screen off and idle and make sure your phone is sleeping. If you have a sleep bug the phone is not shutting down cores and lowering speed while not used leading to multiple hours of battery life lost. I turn off vibrate and haptic feedback off except where I can. If your rooted take control of your cpu and when not needed clock it down yourself. If your browsing you may not need max frequency. 1ghz core or less is good to save power while just casually using the phone.
Just a rant on what I've had success with. No pic but I have had success getting 24 hours between charge with heavy use like 6+ hours screen on if I was really conservative. Most days of heavy use as long as I didn't use a giant overclock I get 9-10 hours between charge.

My favorite brightness widget for quick access and free on play store.
https:// play.google. com/store/apps/details?id=com.haxor
The great widget that's free on play store to adjust your brightness lower than current device brightness in a percent form. it can go 0-100% below your lowest brightness level or even below your highest brightness level if you prefer... as its based on your current set device brightness and is accomplished by using a screen overlay I believe. Adds a little lag when enabled but saves you the power when needed.

Okay thank you kindly. I know much less than anyone here. I am new to this world and new to Android.
Those apps are not new brightness control as you have stated. ofirst one is a simple widget to change brightness from home screen so its just a shortcut. The second a screen overlay that doesn't get in the way of using apps and darkens the screen beyond minimum brightness that SG3 or any phone has. If a user does not need lower screen brightness than normal than the above apps are not going to be useful. Thank you for fixing links. I hope I can add to threads and around.
Like you I would love to see an app that creates a custom auto brIghtness function.

Thanks this looks great. that's what I was looking for in first place. Ill give it a try. That's definitely better yet.
A guy commented on app there and said useful info as follows which Ill try out myself just thought it was also interesting.
"On "automatic dynamic" mode- behaves buggy & erratic. USE: "automatic periodic" with updating at 5 sec intervals. Now works well. Set backlight zero to 10. Sample lux/% settings: 10/-55%, 100/10%, 500/35%, max/100%. Try it. Be nice if widget also showed Auto & %." -Heath
Edit: After trying the above app it easily replaces both apps I posted. Thanks jmorton10 for posting this great app.
Edit: After using all the apps. I found Lux can create lag in the touch interface and browsing etc just like the app"Screen Filter" I posted. On screen filter it causes lag when enabled and for some reason Lux also does this to my phone. Once I disabled and restarted the lag was gone again. I don't have to restart phone for Screen Filter just turning it off with a single button press fixes it. Lux has more features and actually makes a custom auto brightness profile. The free version is fairly limited but has enough to still make a fair brightness profile. Given the lag which is likely on just a few handsets is something most of us saving battery can deal with. Between all the apps I guess it depends on what you need. Lux is a top notch software but the free version is fairly limited vs the free brightness widget and screen filter but has no auto-brightness customization. The lag on Lux was not right away and was exactly like the lag in screen filter app so both must have issue in way the below normal brightness is overlayed over the screen. The paid version is likely very in depth.
Thanks for the app suggestion again.
Thanks for the input. I bought the onite 3800 mah extended battery, but im changing it for the qcell, or hyperion.

Recommendations for Better Battery Life

The Rez I'm using now is an Asurion replacement. Before, this thing was saving battery like a champ. Used to get a full 24 hours or more plus 2 hours screen on time.
Now it's just terrible. I'm 34% on battery after less than 5 hours off the charger with far less than an hour of screen on time.
I'm running Snuzzo's 2.2 funky kernel and Newt's One XxX 6.0.2 rom, S-OFF. CPU is tweaked, running dancedance governor and SIO. 386 MHz to 1 GHz (or whatever they exactly are) when in use. Various profiles are set to run lower, as ive always done.
I'd appreciatw the help, guys. Thanks.

Yes, what he said. I'm running Newt's with ExtraFunky 2c and don't have any problems. In the past when my battery life suddenly nose dived, it turned out to be some app that decided to keep wakelock for some unknown reason. Check recently updated apps.
Yeah probably an app or service running in the background.
Turn off GPS and blue tooth when not in use
Use WiFi when you can
Turn off Google Now
Turn off location history and location reporting in Google maps settings
Make sure you have no widgets constantly refreshing
Increase the times between sync for Gmail, Facebook et al
Try running a more conservative cpu governor supported by your kernel, such as Wheatley or Intellidemand.
Sent from my Rezound using Tapatalk 2
I don't really use Bluetooth that often and keep it off, and gps is always off. And got rid of Google now for the regular Google search. Only the clock widget is running. Though, I should spacing sync times.
Uninstalling some apps seems to have helped for the most part (which makes sense, as I just recently restored a nand backup). But, it's still not as good as it was. I guess it's best to just keep tinkering at this point.
Thanks
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
Well for example, I use fancy widgets for my clock/weather. If you use a program like better battery stats (search xda for the free version), you will see fancy widgets causing the device to wake up more than almost anything else.
That's when you can do stuff like spacing out weather sync to 3 hours, prefer sync over wifi, and maybe even setting a default fixed location for your weather.
But with the kind of battery loss you described, something more than a widget is grabbing power. Make sure you are on auto brightness, btw.
I also use a program called system panel to see what all background services are running. For example, you would be surprised to see services for Google Talk, social apps, even some games running in the background. Then you can use titanium backup to freeze them or un install.
Sent from my Rezound using Tapatalk 2
I've been using Gsam, but what I see use up more resources than anything is the kernel I typically uninstall anything I do not use. Stuff sitting higher up are things like the Kernel, Android System, Camera, Wallpaper Lockscreen and Android Core Apps. That's everything that goes 1% or higher. Everything is under 10%.
And, surprisingly, wake times aren't that high. Typically, screen on time is about equal to the awake time, so all seems well on that end.
I think removing and re-installing apps that were using excessive amounts of energy has probably done the trick, though.
What tuner app do you use?
You might just try running Intellidemand with no underclocking and see how that works for you.
The problem with underclocking is, if you don't give an app enough juice it will take longer to complete a task and the cpu will run longer.
Look closely at your deep sleep times. I barely lose any battery overnight bc I run Wheatley underclocked to 1242 for screen off only.
Glad removing the apps helped some, those buggers.
Sent from my Rezound using Tapatalk 2
I think I'm in a better area now.
I'm using setCPU (always has been reliable for me in the past). I'm running 385-1512 with dancedance and noop. I think this is where I need to be. It's kind I'd feeling like it used to again.
I'm going to try Funky 2.3 now.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
Screen On time is not that great for 8 pct battery left. But it could have been bc you were listening to music for part of that time. Otherwise your screen shot looks normal, good total life.
Sent from my Rezound using Tapatalk 2
I'm getting pretty crazy battery reports using the newest funky kernel for cm10. I could have the phone off charger for hours and it still reports 100% battery. Granted I wasn't using the phone that much, if at all,but to still see 100% battery after that long even idling is weird. Using dancrdance governer with deadline scheduler. It doesn't take much tho to get my battery draining. After about 4-6 hours of use (playing music, games, looking on forums and such) I'm down to about 25% or less. Any suggestions?
Sent from my Rezound using Tapatalk 2
Oooooh, yes. I listen to a lot of music during the day. That day, though, was while listening to less than usual. My deal is going screen on and watching the battery drain 2-4 percent in a 2-5 minute time frame. I understand that the screen is heavy on the battery, but it's never really been like this before. I'm sure I'll have this figured out sometime soon.
What kernel are you on? You might look into undervolting. For example, funky kernel is undervolted by 50 by default. Ermahgerd isn't undervolted by default but supports it. You can safely go down as many as 75-100 without stability issues. It does dramatically reduce battery drain.

I'm using the Tonked world edition with the kernel that came with it and I get great battery life. About 34 hours with 6+ hours of talk time and just under 4 hours of screen time with Bluetooth wifi and mobile data (4g turned off) always on. And almost 3 days with light use. Does help to have the HTC extended battery.

I am quoting Neo, but here are extreme settings for maximum battery life.
A little something I suggested to someone earlier on the fly:
*Don't use auto brightness and keep your screen brightness low but not too low that causes you to strain.
*Undervolt all frequencies by -50mv using kernel tuner.
*Underclock the rom to 1,080mhz
*Change I/O scheduler to noop
*Change governor to Lionheart (if you have it) or DanceDance.
*Disable all haptic feedback including soft keys and keyboard
*Disable data or account sync overnight (unless you plug your phone into a charger over night)
*Enable 16-bit transparency
*Disable dithering
*Disable HW overlays
*Disable all animations
*Ensure GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth are turned off when not in use
*Use WiFi where available instead of 4G
*Disable weather refreshing and leave it to manual refresh
*Disable wallpaper scrolling and animations if possible in the launcher
That's all I can think of at the moment.

Drop your screen off profiles. They will hurt more than help. I already have max screen off cpu clock in place set to 432mhz.
