I really need help!!! I'm new and used unlockr.com to root my phone since it had step by step instructions. Well I was successful at the root part but I'm stuck at loading a custom Rom. My command prompt makes me put cd c:/AndroidSDK/AndroidSDK/tools to get anywhere, which is not the way he showed it. I downloaded the flash and recovery image in the sdk tools folder and on my SD card. My comp reads an android abd interface. I installed 2.1 & 2.2 platforms on sdk manager. In my c: I put abd device and it gives me a serial number but it will not let me do the rest of the instructions such as adb shell, etc. I really would be indebted for some help. I'm using windows vista 32-bit.

I've never even heard of unlockr.com. I went there and it's some random search website. Did you just search for how to root the Eris from that website? I'm confused.
Anyway, I think you're making things too complicated for yourself. Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742228
That should give you everything you need as far as rooting and installing the Amon RA recovery image all in one go.
I certainly will. Thanks for the help. Yes, I googled how to root and that was what seemed easiest.

No problem. I know it can be a little daunting weeding through all the information on here.
What is a good all around custom Rom? And could anyone steer me in the right direction to maybe a list of Rom if there is one available?

i used the unlockr version and i ended up having to look at other sources as well because i was quite confused head over to eris dev. thread and several are there..... Tazz v6.....CELB 1.9.....KaosFroYo....these are the 2.2ish ROMS
Search for jcase's Known ROMS, hacks, and patches. It's in the Eris dev section. I'm using Eris lightning 3.02 and it works very well for me. A good strong reliable 2.1 sense based Rom with 710mhz overclock and apps2sd working perfectly. The few 2.2 froyo Roms are good, but not quite there yet. You can go to Android.grdlock.net to find the downloadable links to all the Eris roms.

Hey, I just updated over Kies (which worked perfectly BTW) and now I'm trying to root but for some reason it fails to do so. Has this happened to anyone else?
No problems. Look up.oneclickroot

I went fine for me using oneclick.
Can someone link to the one click root for me please?

I don't think you can root the update, something to do with the 3e recovery I think. There is a way to mod the 3e recovery to allow for root, there are directions somewhere in one of the threads.
I just install one of the pre-rooted ones in the dev section, the hardwork was done thanks to the nice devs.
My girlfriend has a stock vibrant and wants the news and weather widget but it doesn't come in the 2.2 update so I need to install it but can't without root. At least I don't think I can. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Might be device dependent - I ended up Odining back to stock and starting over with a rooted flash because it would not pass sig check for me no matter what after the kies update.
Use freaking one click root...
Do a google search on that and you'll find a link on xda..
Have u heard of google?
With One-Click Root I'm getting "E:signature verification failed". Anybody have any ideas on how to get around this?
Just ODIN Supercurios KA6 voodoo kernel with root & cwm in it already
Really think I don't know how to root? Come on.
It is not working for some of those who ended up with the .sbl. Odin out, and flash a rooted version if you are one of those who can't beat the sig check.
Is there a way to root without flashing an insecure kernel?

Thanks a bunch entropy. But i was thinking more along the lines of using superoneclick or something on stock kernel. I've never rooted a Samsung device. I guess the atrix devs made stuff TOO easy.

The devs working on Samsung make it pretty easy too. Odin and One-Click Root have helped me with my original SGS many, many times. Hopefully, we'll see something similar for the SGSII, if it isn't out already.
Yeah, what happened to the good ol days of putting a root file named update.zip and going in to stock recovery to use it?

i'm pretty sure you can't do that anymore because those flaws were patched.

Stock recovery won't flash ZIPs not signed by Samsung.
On older devices, the road to CWM that was easiest was usually:
Root, replace recovery with a hacked version that disabled signing checks
However, in later versions of Gingerbread, all of the usual methods of rooting were closed because malware was using the same holes. As a result, SOC is unable to root a device without some "help", and on Samsung devices that "help" is an insecure kernel.

Odin is a program used by Samsung for device updates. It allows flashing of firmware in "download mode". The nice thing about this is that while it's easy to "softbrick" your phone with a bad kernel or corrupted system image, it is EXTREMELY difficult to corrupt the bootloaders used for download mode, especially on newer devices that go to extra lengths to protect their bootloaders from damage. As a result, for example, I know of a total of one hardbricked Infuse and that was the phone of a volunteer performing a dangerous experiment. There's an open-source reimplementation of Odin called Heimdall that a lot of people use, since Odin is Windows-only and Heimdall runs on Windows, MacOS, and Linux. I use heimdall because I run Linux.
The differences between rooting methods are not significant - different ways to achieve the end goal.
Insecure kernel + SuperOneClick - Will trigger "custom binary download" flags in the bootloader, but only requires fairly small downloads (maybe 20MB or so). Requires two steps (flashing the kernel, then SuperOneClicking)
Rooted system image (such as my unbrick) - Should not trigger "custom binary download" flags as the bootloader only seems to check the kernel for modifications. However it's a big download - around 250M if I recall correctly.
If you're going to eventually want to use Clockworkmod Recovery to install alternate ROMs and such, you'll have to install a custom kernel anyway. However my "unbrick" package is nice to have around if you hose up your system.
I'm planning on staying stock no custom kernel, rom or anything on that matter but I really need root. Don't really need CWM. Is there any other way to root beside going back to stock using Odin? I'm to lazy to set my phone back up. Or is superoneclick root working on a solution to easy root like on the infuse?

In terms of "back to stock" - it means "back to stock firmware" - it won't touch your data partition, so if you're already on stock firmware, you should retain all your data.

v2.3.6
Released on 2 September 2011, this version fixed a voice search bug. The 2.3.6 update had the side-effect of impairing the Wi-Fi hotspot functionality of many Canadian Nexus S phones. Google acknowledged this problem and fixed it in late September
Reference
Pretty sure superoneclick will do it easily. There's other threads around here about rooting these devices that should have any info you need.

supeoneclick 2.3.3. doesn't work on stock 2.3.6 EU G70 rom
It depends on whether you want to keep the stock kernel or not. If not, you can flash a custom kernel first and then root it by say zegrush.
Actually I have just rooted the new 2.3.6 EU rom this way.
I have rooted it successfully.
It worked for me

Superoneclick

That's weird because SuperOneClick after the Step #7 is "not responding"... And nothing happen.
After ~20 tries it worked! My Galaxy S Wi-Fi 3.6 is finally rooted!

I've tried everything, and still no luck.
The usb is in developer mode, I tried with dismounted sd card, I removed the sd card completely, turned off the firewall and the virus scanner, reseted the device, removed all the extra programs, changed the usb port on my pc. The cable is good.
The zerg rush runs every time, than superoneclick is stuck at the waiting for the device step, but nothing happens.
Tried all the steps in several combinations, several times, but no luck.
There is another rooting method in the developer forum. It runs fine but after it finished, the device is still not rooted.
Device: JP-G70
Version number: 2.3.6
Kernel: 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2

Using DoomLorD's Easy Rooting Toolkit 4.0, I was able to root my device on 2.3.6 successfully; I'm using an SGP 4.0 Model YP-G1.
Worked the first time; I suggest trying that method rather than SuperOneClick (I had problems with it when I first got my SGP)
--Trae
Thanks for the help, but it didn't help. I tried a factory reset too, but still no luck.
It seems that the application tells me that there is not enough space on system partition. But without root access, I think there is nothing I can do.

Yes there is a way, just in case you don't have it here we go . If you don't have clockwork mod recovery installed use your phone to download the cwr update.zip in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 .Scroll down and look for directions on how to install cwr. Use a file manager app called " Astro " to put the file on your internal sd. Once you have recovery mode installed you can simply use your phone to download a custom 2.2 ROM and flash it through recovery mode (there will be directions on how to flash this in the thread) , just be sure to READ everything before flashing. This is probably the most popular 2.2 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441976 , you can search for others if you wish. This will pretty much void your warranty so if that's a problem then your probably stuck with 2.1 until you get your usb port fixed. Here is the closest Stock 2.2 ROM you will find if that's what your looking for http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674519

yes... you can get an update.zip from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/59531727/Clockwork Recovery/Update.zip taken from Woodrube's Signature.
FYI DONT use KIES. It may Hard Brick your device. Place this update.zip in the root of internal SD (NOT inside a folder). You will have to do reinstall packages twice to get it to CWM maybe.
There are many good 2.2 ROMs like Moped's Ryders ROM and Fishman's.

I can't help but to notice that your signature says MB855. Since you are using a Photon, are you doing this modding for a friend's phone? If so and that person is not the "technical" sort, I suggest you leave them on 2.2 for now.
ICS ROMs are well beyond what you would think since we have no official ROM from Samsung for our devices, however they are not without dangers and pitfalls. There is a bug that is hitting Vibrants, Captivates, I-9000's, a few Asus Transformers (tf101)-in fact someone got hit with it yesterday. It is called the Encryption UnSuccessful bug and it will render the Internal_sd useless and you will have to hack your External_sd to run ANY ROM. Other than that and the fact that the Vibrant has crappy GPS (sans hardware fix), ICS ROMs are spectacular, especially since very few phones are running ICS at all, let alone 4.0.4.
I suggest you read about the EU bug but my pick for the best daily driver ICS ROM is by far ICZen with SubZero kernel. You can find it here but check out the dev section too.
