So how can I root my phone after the 4.1.83 update?
Also I noticed that my custom Tethering APN works but my laptop can't access internet from it.
Help?!
the custom APN works for me. Just turn it on, restart the phone and try it again, also try resetting your wireless adapter on your laptop....

**warning** back up ur sdcard since it formats it.
use gladenable for sideloading and tethering.
Ok so I fixed the Tethering problem because i just had to reset the adapter in my laptop and all is good now. It worked before so it couldnt have been the driver problem.
gingerbreak isn't working for me. it just sits there for 10 minutes and doesnt do anything.

i had same issue.. then i realized u need an EXT sdcard for it to work.. process only takes maybe 2 minutes.
ooooh! its working normally now. Thank you
I get a message that my account is not set up for wifi hotspot no matter what APN I use. I used to be able to switch APNs, then switch back, and the hotspot would start. After the 4.1.83 update this isn't working.
Is there something I'm missing here?
Can I root 1.8.3 if I never rooted my device before? I am at 1.8.3.
According to Moto downgrading from 1.8.3 is not a good idea.

Yes u can. I have also updated and flashed back to 4.1.57 and updated back to 4.1.83 and rooted using gingerbreak

Yes, with gingerbreak
Once you update to the latest Atrix 4G release, do not downgrade to a previous version or you will lose functionality. A file system change was made to improve data integrity (for the technically inclined, journaling was enabled on a partition). Once updated, the change cannot be undone through flashing.
Is it safe to flash back?

i tried using the command prompt before and have tried to learn but i can never get the hang of it....or it never worked for me
only reason i was trying to root (was) is so i could do my hotspot seeing as me and my wife do storm chasing and need the access to the internet but i can setup a whole new apn and do the samething......just have to find att apn settings again
ginger break installed or popped up after trying several time the three different ways to get it on the phone....owell thanks for the help

Picked up an Artix from AT&T yesterday and so far, it's a great phone. I'm trying to ROOT this phone with no success. I've tried everything suggested in the forums, I have all the drivers and tools required, but can not get this done. When I run superoneclick and select "root" it hangs on "waiting for device". If somebody could give me detailed step by step instructions, I would be grateful. I'm running on the latest firmware update which is 4.1.57
I've successfully rooted my Nexus S and Inspire 4g with no problem, so I have some experience doing this. Please Help!!

Same here. How did you ROOT your Atrix?
I think it is because of the update 4.1.57 that was released a few weeks ago. I've had my atrix since released and rooted it right away just fine; however, when i try to install the update it crashes and i have to pull the battery and reboot.
i just rooted my atrix yesterday with no problem using gingerbreak so that can't be it

I'm using 4.1.57. It's the newest one and you should be using that if you're trying to root.
I put the app on my atrix and simply clicked "root"

You guys are aware that gingerbreak has an EXTREMELY high risk of formatting you sd card right? I personally suggest using gladroot its less messing and it enables sideloading for you also NEVER use superoneclick that programs nothing but a mess on our phones.
Here's the link for gladroot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016060
thats just my 2 cents
sent from XDA mobile
In the instructions on this site it mentions to make a backup of your sdcard. And if that's the only issue, I can deal with it since it's so simple
Also to enable sideloading, download root explorer and sqlite. Go into root explorer --> ers.settings/databases/settings.db. It'll bring you into sqlite. Select secure and the second line should be "install non market apps". Change the value from zero to one
I have been trying many different programs to unroot and they seem not working. My phone is updated to the latest version. any helps please???!!! I'm a rookie, my apologizes. I just dont wanna f**k my phone up. FYI i used Gingerbread v1.1 and have SuperUser application on my phone.
Gingerbreak v1.2 has unroot
GladRoot does also.
Or you could sbf.

hm, maybe try to uninstall v1.1 first (settings->applications->manage applications->Gingerbreak->uninstall). download the v1.2 apk. Install v1.2 onto your Atrix with the instructions here, something like (once your phone is connected, debugging mode enabled, USB mode none:
adb devices ->output should list a device, your atrix
adb install C:\directory where you downloaded the apk\GingerBreak-v1.20.apk
the gingerbreak app should now be on your phone, run it and then unroot

Your doing it wrong.
You could also move gladroot to an SD card and execute through file manager to install it.
I could be wrong, but you could probably just delete the su and superuser.apk and you should be unrooted.

Not true, either part. Wtf.
Safest route........flash sbf and be done with it. By time you find the magic shortcut that will fu*k your phone up you could have flashed 4.1.26 and updated OTA TO 4.1.83.

I thought the sbf made it not an "official build" and then wouldn't OTA update? Have a friend with an Atrix same issue can't seem to unroot so hoping someone can give some clear steps that I can pass on. I believe he used aRoot originally to root it...

No. SBF is the official build. SBF does not keep you from OTA update.

3) flash back to stock and tried gingerbreak...still didn't work

I can't get mine to root either and I'm on stock 2.2 manufacturer rom. I have the sim free UK version of the phone which already has an option to side load as it's not tied to a carrier which is nice.
I want to root so I can use titanium backup. I've followed many rooting guides to the T with no success, ginger brake just runs endlessly and super one click fails no matter which version I use. I've never had such a ball ache rooting my previous phone was a one click job.

You have to have an sdcard in the external slot for gingerbreak to work. At least I had to.

as ive said before. If you are having problems rooting or think its not working try to put your phone in charge only mode under usb. Bet that will fix it for you.

1. Go to Settings/Application/development menu and make sure that USB debugging is checked
2. Open Notification screen by swipe down from the top of the screen, you should see USB connection. Choose that and make sure choose "Charge Only" and click OK
3. Download Superuser from Market and install it on your phone.
4. go to Settings/Display/Screen Timeout and choose never
5. Download drivers, ADB packages, Root files from the link below and extract them to your C drive under Root directory (C:\Root). Then just follow the direction of the link below to root your phone.
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-root-motorola-photon-4g
If you follow the direction correctly, If i remember correctly at the last step your phone Superuser application should popup and ask you to allow the root process to access root. Click OK then you are root
First of all, I am new to all things Android. I just got my Android phone about a week or so ago. I also don't know if this thread is in the right spot...
I just rooted my Epic 4G and the wifi won't work. I have no recollection if it worked before I rooted it since I never used it. All I know is that when I try to enable it, it says it's searching for a hotspot, then after about 10 seconds, it disables itself. I tried a third party app from the store, and still no luck. I think the chip might be fried...
I am running Android version 2.3.6.
I rooted my phone using this method:
