Optmal Video settings for P500

As you know our phone isn't really equipped to play most videos we throw at it, so what video bitrate/resolution/framerate have you found to work the best on the Optimus one?
And please mention which software you use to convert.
THIS IS IT....
xvid codec 640*360 max with ~1Mbps and mp3/aac audio are played without conversion...(your Sitcom episodes)...
Havent TRIED h264 or DIVx playback ...on the box though it does say DIVX resolution upto 320*240..
files with ogg video(theora) and ac3 audio dont play without conversion
No 720p,1080p/i playback possible...FOR ALL HIGHER resolutions/bitrate u need to convert ..i have a personal converter favourite....hassle free and its just a GUI for the wonderful FFMPEG program...herehttp://miksoft.net
Really? Mine struggles to play 624x352 24fps .mkv files. Unwatchable.
Which video player do you use on your phone?
I use Handbrake for all my videos. Starting from the "iPhone Legacy" profile, here are the settings I use to create H.264 files:
- Video: 480 x 320, H.264 (x264) codec, 768 Kbps bitrate, FPS same as source
- Audio: AAC (faac), stereo, 44.1 KHz, 128 kbps bitrate.
Image and sound are crystal clear, but of course, you can find your own favorite settings (just don't mess with the advanced settings, our CPU only handles the basic H.264 profile).
I use RockPlayer (the free version) for playback, because it can render .srt subtitles.

Lol I m pretty sure its not mik's company and I never said I cud play mkv files ...that container is a ***** ..
Yeah it is. And thanks for that link, it works great.
I'm using the m video player. It is pretty good and plays with subtitles. Loving it. Just that the phone doesn't support higher resolution mp4 videos. Jus the audio plays and the video drags. I use demo player to play flv. Some videos play fluently while other drag and drag!!
Also ppl if you are into h264 (like masteryx is)
U could try "any video converter" here http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/
It is wonderful i m using it...At these setting
h264 778Kbps 480*320
mp3 48Hz 128kbps
in .avi container..Conversion is faster than handbrake

I was wondering the same thing! *.mkv wasn't really a good experience on p500

[Q] MSM8660 video playback [MKV issue]

Firstly, I use mVideoPlayer pro (an excellent video player) which doesn't include any software decoding. The player only uses the soc codecs but adds subtitle support and it recognizes the .mkv extension.
The latest version now supports:
- srt, ssa, ass, sub/idx, mpl, smi, txt, sub, sami.
- Internal MKV Subtitle (srt, ssa, ass)
Anyway, I have 2 identical video samples (.mkv), but only one of them will play. (using mvideo or stock player).
I am wondering if this is a software bug and if anyone has had the same issues?
The samples are both H264 MPEG4 AVC, 23.97 frames with DTS Audio (no audio is expected). One video is 1280x544 and the other is 1280x532. The only difference is that one has internal subtitles and the other does not.
Any info would be appreciated.
I'm having similar issues . One video will play audio just fine but will freeze playing the video a few seconds in but continue with audio. The other video is just extremely stuttery. I don't have codec specifics or video specifics at the moment but it is an issue .
Grrr!

Funny enough, some of my videos start off blocky or have that green video effect for the first 2 seconds, but then play fine afterwards. I don't get any freezing during play. If a video starts to play, it continues fine for me. (Although, I haven't watched a full length movie as yet).
Did you get the 2 HTC updates? I did a check for HTC updates and factory reset my phone as soon as i got it. (lost the stupid hornet movie)
I am downloading more 720p video samples for testing. it may be the internal subs causing my issue, which would be strange.
(EDIT: xvid has the same problem, some video plays some don't)
1Ghz hummingbird puts all of these dual core ***** SOC's to shame. Long live Galaxy Tab 7 and Galaxy S!
Wow, this app seems really nice. I was using the latest rockplayer because it had hardware decoding, but I noticed that it wouldn't play audio on any of my 720p mkvs. This app looks much more polished, and the video plays back every bit as smoothly, but it appears to have the same problem of not playing any audio along with the video. God, we're so close!!
Oh, I tried samples with DTS and some that were just 720p rips from broadcast tv, and neither had audio. For that reason, I didn't test enough of the video to verify your issues, sorry for the threadjack.

It wont play DTS audio and that is expected. Only my Archos 101 could play DTS audio out of the box, but Archos added that decoding feature.
Try encoding with Handbrake, the default setting will convert the DTS audio to MPEG AAC stereo.
So I tried more random MPEG4 AVC with DTS videos and I am very confused:
video #1 1280x720 had subs, didn't play
video #2 1920x800 no subs, video played
video #3 1280x534 no subs, didn't play
video #4 1280x720 no subs, video played
More tests:
I used mediainfo and compared codec data between several video files that played and some that didn't play and they all look the same.
I even used mkvmerge GUI to remove the audio and subtitles out of some of the videos just to see if that would work, but they still didn't play.
try dice player.
diceplayer can play 720p H.264 High + DTS +MKV flawlessly.

HD Video

I can't for the life of me get this to work i have this 1080p AAC/MP4 harry potter movie- works fine on my laptop and desktop- but wont play on this tablet.
Initially when I got the tablet i was excited and installed the gtabcomb rom (for 1.1) this was AWESOME, but obviously no hd video support (which is really what I am after...)
Ive tried CM7, Gtab TNT lite 4.40, Calkulins, and im about to try the vegan rom.
I have the 1.1 boot loader.
Ive tried like 5 different video players, none have worked except for the software decoding on rockplayer... HOWEVER this was 10 fps, and distorted.
What do I do here? I really want decent hd video.
Thanks!
EDIT: Vegan is clear and the audio is working properly all with the default player BUT the FPS is less than 15...
Now what ?
What player have you tried? For me, between qqplayer, mvideoplayer, and arcmedia, I can play just about everything under the sun.
:<
Going to try some other players now, i will make a list.
strangely - after having the video work (sort of ) in the vegan default player... I tried rock player again.
That fails- when i click hardware decode it just flashes and goes back to the video list... software decode does nothing... just black screen.
SO i uninstalled it.
And now the default vegan player doesn't work at all- just says " can't player this video" (or something like that).
So frustrating
EDIT:
Rock Player : Clear video but 15fps or lower, audio but jumpy.
QQ - Clear video imagery but 15fps or lower, no audio.
ARCMedia - Choppy video at 15ps or lower, choppy techoy - audio....
mVideo - "Cannot player this video" (exiting... then im back at the video list much like the default app)
Try moboplayer, but I dont think the gtablet can do 720p or 1080p unless properly encoded specifically for the gtablet - not powerful enough (ie stuttering).
Same
Mobo player with soft decoding works but still 15fps or lower.
What is the absolute best container, format for a 1080p file to be encoded?
Moboplayer plays almost everything I throw at it with very little stuttering while streaming from my home network using UPnPlay but the audio from the gtab is way to low. When I plug in headphones the volume is OK.
I have gone into sound settings on the gtab and the set device volume is always at 50% even after I increase it to 100%.
Suggestions?

Weird. My gtab's sound is the loudest out of the tablets I have available to me (ipad, iconia, and transformer).
Froyo
Are you running Froyo? Had the same problem until I upgraded to honeycomb. Now its nice and loud.
I thought there was absouletly no HD video support in HC :/ Is it possible to get smooth, quality 1080p playback with 1.1 BL + HC (I guess Gtabcomb?)
And how?! DO WANT!
:/
It would seem that even the stock rom does not play my video Guess it might just be the damn video lol.
Media info is saying MP4 container, h264 and acc audio.
:/
zzz
Someone please tell me what is going on, I can't imagine everyone is using these tablets without any video support...
I nvflashed to 1.2 BL - stock. bone stock, no new apps nothing.
and then i downloaded some trailers from here
http://www.h264info.com/clips.html
Now, the damn viewsonic site even says this the gtablet supports these:
S1080p H.264/H.263/ VC-1/MPEG-2/4/WMV9/DiVX 4/5 Video Decode, 1080p H.264/MPEG-4 Video Encode, Supports multi-standard audio formats, including AAC, AMR, WMA, and MP3
AND- the video (for instance the serenity hd dvd trailer on that page above) is:
Video Codec: H.264
Trailer Resolution: 720p (1280x720), High Profile (Xbox 360 Compatible)
Audio Codec: AAC LC
Resolution: Stereo, 48 kHz, VBR 128 Kbps
Why is that not playable?! I tried multiple other formats and nothing works...
I want to see this device in an out of the box way play hd video as it suggests... i can can't it?
Really frustrated, spent 4 hours tonight flashing pretty much every 1.1 rom and then nv flashing to 1.2 and flashing like 4 different 1.2 roms (including illuminate, which looked really promising but just gets stuck and the "Illuminate Android" screen...
Flash videos player (snotr.com) but youtube.com videos do not. (error occured).
EDIT: Just managed to get VitalPlayer installed (downloaded apk on computer and installed) - plays all of the above videos BUT still they are terribly slow frame rates... what am i doing wrong?
So encoding in MPEG-4 makes everything work... smaller file sizes, smooth frame rates... AAC audio seems good too.
Set bitrate at 4000 and I guess this is how ill have to do everything :/
I am currently running C&C 1.5 v6.
Streaming over UPnPlay.
Most .avi files play ok using the stock movie player - sound and picture
When I try the same file with Mobo the volume goes way down.
When I press the volume button up the on screen volume indicator gose from 50% to 100%, but there is very little change in the volume. The gtab volume indicator does not appear.
When I go back to gtab settings the volume has gone from 100% to 50%.
I have gone into the UPnPlay settings and switched between volume and volume DB with no change.
Look i know your trying to help but if you had read a single thing I have posted
* I HAVE NO ISSUES WITH VOLUME *
Just trying to get an hd video (preferably 1080p) to play at a decent frame rate (23.976+).
Thus far no h264 video works... they are all 15fps or lower.
I have found that a 720p h264 re encoded to mpeg4 @ 4000 kbps does play smooth.
However a 1080p h264 re encoded to mpeg4 @ 4000 kbps is (better than just h264) still sluggish, and the audio doesn't quite sync up.
I really just want to know what video container/codec will work best on a stock 1.2 BL T&T Rom.
I was replying to roberto188 regarding my ROM.
Didn't mean to hi-jack thread, I was just sharing my experiences and looking for help.
Well apologies accepted I am sorry for my mini-rage, just really frustrated trying to get some hd videos working on the thing.
Seems I am just going to have to deal without them...
No worries.
For what it is worth, I just switched to GtabComp 3.2 and the audio issues disappeared.

Try using this to convert your videos for the gTablet. http://dvdvideosoft.com/download/FreeVideoToAndroidConverter.exe
It's free and it has a setting for the Viewsonic Viewpad 10 (1024x600, 1.5Mbps, 128kbps AAC, 48khz, standard quality) and they play perfectly on my Caulkulin+Clemsyn Combo v6 (Froyo).
Thanks will do! I found that mpeg seems to work best but i def got hw acceleration working with caulkulin+clemsyn combo not sure if h264 is working but at least the videos are clear and crisp - I will see about this software thanks!
edit:
FYI Just tried the program, it converts them to mpeg-4 anyway just does it really clean, and faster than handbrake.
Good find TY!!!
so does this mean that when ViewSonic says the Gtablet can play 1080p....are they really saying if you convert your existing movie file into another format with different bit rates and special settings then the Gtablet can play 1080P?

HD mkv playback - With Sample Links

* Update *
Youtube Video Samples below for comparison - some compression artifacts showing there, not from the sony tablet playback (it was flawless on either mode), most likely youtube recompression tools
Hi,
I bought one of these tablets just yesterday - 16GB version - and so far I'm extremely pleased with it! Typing is a breeze, image quality is superb, gaming is pretty decent even for 3D, I bought Riptide GP after upgrading Honeycomb to 3.2, but I'm having issues with HD mkv playback.
Basically, watching 720p or 480p even (anime mkv files) I get jerky video playback when the movie player is set to HW mode. The jerks are subtle and steady, but mostly noticeable especially on panning scenes. If I change the player settings to SW or Fast SW, playback is smooth but slightly less quality there (but totally fine though). I've tried several players other than the built-in video player and results are the same.
HD flash plays OK, so I don't think this is a hardware performance issue, probably some HW / codec compatibility issue....
Can anyone else confirm this? Horriblesubs releases (Naruto Shippuuden / Fairy Tail).
SD xvid releases play just fine, both HW and SW settings on the player.
Better .h264 codec support perhaps?
(apparently, not .h264!)
Oh, and quite pleased with the fact that video files can in fact be played directly from the SD card, without having to copy them to the internal memory storage!
I tried posting from the XDA free app in the Market, but somehow, it crashes everytime I try to post from it, so I'm using the android browser - already submitted a report.

I am having the same problem you described? Is this typical on all android tablets?
Looks like i'll need to convert unfortunately... I wonder if there is an app for that.
Unless it is a codec issue and there is an alternative codec or fix..
I'm curious, do you feel the quality between HW mode and either SW mode available to be that worse? I'm using SW for now on these particular files, I was thinking about converting the files original formats but SW still seems pretty good I think! I will try to snapshot the differences and post them here!
Hadn't noticed before, the tablet comes with 3 HD sample videos inside all play just fine, no jerks - seems more and more like a specific codec compatibility issue with tegra possibly, to me...
A software issue. I can play videos fine on my Jetstream and Ipad2 which play badly on the tablet S.
So it isn't an android issue.
For MKV playback try DicePlayer and install the Diceplayer plugin for tegra.
Try the trial version to see it meets your requirements (before buying).
----- snip -----
Diceplayer uses HW video decoder.
It use HW video decoder at various containers and audio codecs combination. ( H.264/AC-3/MKV, H.264/DTS/MKV , H.264/AAC/MOV )

+1 I tried out MX player too but found that DicePlayer had smoother playback.
Working container / video / audio combo and easy conversion
I've tested several combinations of container / video / audio formats with several players. First of all, I didn't notice any significant differences in playback quality between the players I tried, but I might not have tried Dice player for all of the combos.
I did try MX Video Player, mVideoPlayer, MoboPlayer and BS Player Lite, with a 720p h264 encoded video track at about 3000 kbps. For all players, I found the SW decoding modes to insufferably slow and jerky - I assume a lower bitrate in the video track might fix that. Per hardware acceleration, the video always played fine (when it played at all, see format details below).
These combos did NOT work:
mkv/mp4 container, h264 encoded video, mp3 audio
mkv container, h264 encoded video, ac3 audio (plays the video hw accelerated, but doesn't play the sound at all)
mkv container, h264 encoded video, aac audio
The only combo that did work flawlessly was this:
mp4 container, h264 encoded video, aac audio
I now had the problem that my standard video encoding tool, handbrake, cannot transcode files without also recoding the video file - and why would I want to recode the video when usually it's a h264 encoded video that will play with the right container & audio? The easiest way to transcode such a file is to use ffmpeg - I did this under linux, but it should work the same for Windows:
Code:
ffmpeg -i INPUTFILE.mkv -vcodec copy -acodec libfaac -ab 160k -ar 48000 -async 48000 OUTPUTFILE.mp4
I couldn't figure out a way to easily transcode mkv files where the video track has a variable bitrate (VFR) - I had to recode those with handbrake. If anyone has a simpler method that doesn't involve avisynth / is available for linux, I'd be happy to hear it.
DicePlayer rocks. I tried various apps but only did DicePlayer works. Tested with a 1080 h.264 movie and the quality was STUNNING! Definitely worth the money
By the way, Honey does not support H.264 natively so most of the players out there won't work

[Q] blu ray rip uncompressed mkv playback ( makemkv, com )

I'm checking to see if the snapdragon 800 / adreno 330 at the heart of the xperia Z ultra can playback mkv bluray rips made using makemkv (free while in beta, aka forever) from makemkv.com. (caution resulting file can be 15-30GB)
I'd like to hear if anyone has tried it, either off a SNB (windows) share on a 801.11 N or AC wireless network or right from the microsd card.
The best apps to try for playback are:
bsplayer
Archos Video player (with codec add-on for sound)
VLC nightlys (not available in the play store, google for the apk)
I'm considering getting this phone or another based on the snapdragon 800 and want to know if it can flawlessly playback these files and for bonus points if anyone has successfully been able to output the playback over MHL/HDMI cable to a larger 1080p display.
Thanks!
i play my 1080p Movie mp4 rips and they perform great
tho the video app cant play avi video formats sadly
I use 'dice player' and it works well for mkv file even streaming.

I'm guessing these are re-compressed 1080p movies. I want to know if the phone can handle playback of the actual video streams on the bluray itself. MakeMKV rips the actual video streams and puts them all in a mkv container. The resulting file is often 20-30GB, not the 5-10GB of the 1080p files I'm guessing you tried. BTW, if you try the apps I listed above (diceplayer too as was recommended) you will have no trouble playing back those old AVI files.

Great testing, looking forward to your results tonight! Is your link speed on wireless close to 300Mbit?
Also, try Archos (google: archos video player apk and Archos Video All Codecs Plugin) and bsplayer are good ones to try.
Great to hear about 10bit 1080p anime releases too!
Thanks a bunch!
Sorry forum the late replay hadden lot of work @ one's
