Adb 'push' doesn't take, why? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Whenever I push, chmod, then reboot, my device reboots but nothing else. Adb DOES recognize my device, I can install/uninstall, remount, etc... So wat?
I'm try'n to get a modded Ziggy script to run on boot (to further undervolt- others have gotten to run)
I've tried manually pasting in unit.d folder, then manually fixing perm.s but after I reboot, the permissions have reverted n nothing has changed.
Yes, I'm a noob, please help.

Ok, well I'm the admin. (only 1 user acct.) so I should be good

Maybe you're pushing whatever to a system folder not mounted with write access? I know if you try pushing to say /system/etc/hosts and you dont have it mounted in write access and have root permission (on the phone in both cases), it will reset it back to the original on reboot.

Crap, I think ur right. I was fixing perms thru adb w chmod, but AFTER I pushed.
But regardless I don't think I set as R/W.
Also, wat would cause me not to be able to set permissions manually (for individual paths) using root explorer ( or similar file manager)?

Nope, doesn't change a F'n thing. God I wanna swear soooo bad. almost more than I respect this forum.

K, I found that adb thinks I'm mounted as R/O tho I'm mounted as R/W. WHY
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App

Dunno offhand; you're not being very descriptive and it's hard to read what you're saying. Try a different approach, like using sshdroid pro (with putty or xshell) and the command line there instead of adb. I dont really use adb to push/mod things on the phone unless there's no other choice (like rooting your phone). If you're using a custom rom, they generally have a small script built into them to mount the system folder(s) as r/w (type sysrw or sysro).

It was as simple as having slashes backwards, lol, figures.
Adb still thinks I'm in read-only tho. I tried "adb remount" to no avail.
I'm not familiar w/ the other things u mentioned (i can barely read em til I change my font)
R those things I DL? Put in my SDK?
I'LL check em out

To be more descriptive: I'm using virusROM RC1B2 w/ updated Ziggy kernel (bfs).
I have a modified script (from Ziggy) that I recently pushed to system/etc/unit.d that I'm tryn to run.
After I push I type "adb shell chmod 755 /system/etc/init.d/04vddlevels" (file name).
Then adb says "can't chmod" cuz the file system is "read-only"
I try "adb remount" n then re-entering chmod n it says nothing n nothing happens.
I am mounted as R/W so I'm confused.
Hope that explains it btr, Thnx 4 the help!
Edit; I also have a "tweak" zip file I flashed from adrynalyne to enable script to run on boot encased the Rom isn't set up to, tho others (one that I know of) has had no problems. He hasn't been able to help either.

then you log into it with either
http://www.netsarang.com/products/xsh_detail.html
or
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/
or if you're using linux or osx, you can do it natively on the terminal line with the ssh command.
You can transfer files over sftp (with ssh) using something like filezilla http://filezilla-project.org/
Tutorials:

http://www.howtoforge.com/ssh_key_based_logins_putty
http://psychologyit.rutgers.edu/helpdocs/filezilla.html
There's plenty of pages out there on ssh if you search google though. Just read up. It's the primary way to communicate (securely) remotely with a linux/unix server. It encrypts your traffic to and from a server (in this case, your phone). It also means no cables (though you can do that with wireless adb also).
Basically, it's a way of remotely using the terminal built into android (since it's linux) without having to use adb.

try this (all one line):
(for write perms)
adb shell mount -o remount,rw,noatime,nodiratime -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system
(to set back to read only)
adb shell mount -o remount,ro,noatime,nodiratime -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system
if that doesn't work, then you're not root, so you will have to type:
adb shell su -
to get root before doing the other commands

Cool Thnx, yeah I have seen that b4, I'm tryn it(adb thing 1st) now.

Ok, wat does "device or resource busy" mean?

http://lmgtfy.com/?q="device+or+resource+busy"+android

Do I type: "adb shell su-" (then hit enter) ? Cuz I get "su- not found"
There's not supposed to be a space between 'su' and '-' , correct, cuz then I get a '#' sign n adb freezes.
Wow I'm a mess, lol, Thnx 4 help, maybe I should do some studying n come bak more prepared!

[Q] Rooted or not?

Hi, I rooted my Vribrant, both ways (manually and with one click root). I installed terminal emulator. I tried the su command to check if I am root. The # appears normally. However I tried deleting a file with Root explorer, inside the system folder, and when I get back it's still there. I also tried deleting it manually from Terminal EMulator with these commands:
su
cd system/apps
rm Swype.apk
and I get this:
rm failed for Swype.apk, Read-only file system
I also tried:
su rm Swype.apk
and this is returned:
Permission denied.....
I also tried the exact same thing from adb shell (which I had to allow in superuser permissions program), but it gave me the exact same results. What's wrong? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks
In root explorer, try hitting the r/w button at the top and see if that works.

I know about the button. The strange thing is that inside system folder it grands me r/w permissions, and no matter how many times a press the r/o button it doesn't change. Still gives the results I said. However, besides root Explorer what's wrong with terminal emulator and adb?
I'm not 100% sure how to mount as root in adb. I wish I knew myself heh.

I tried the first method but it didn't work. When I entered adb root, it said "adbd cannot run as root in production builds". I searched a bit and found that I must have a rooted kernel for this to work. (I guess it's different from the root method I tried in "how to root vibrant").
Anyway the second way worked, where i replaced mntblock3 with stl9 for my phone. I tried the rm command and it worked! However as soon as I exited terminal, I couldn't delete other files. I had to retype the command. I can't do this everytime I need access in System folder. Why is this happenning? Does this have something to do with the fact that root explorer cannot change r/w to r/o mode while in system folder?

No it didn't work. I also installed the latest version of SuperUser 2.3.6.1. But without a difference unfortunately.
What works for me, is installing sgs tools, and whenever I want to do write operations on system folder, run the appropriate script from sgs and then use root explorer......
Although I think there's something wrong? Why doesn't the mount r/w button work in root explorer, and why do I have to remount the file system through SGS tools, every time for it to work?
makes no sense to me either. Have you uninstalled RE and the installed it back granting root once reinstalled?
Yes several times.....
I am giving up. I just have to go through the whole process every time. I found some other people having this issue. I am on stock JI6 firmware. Maybe when I read a little bit more I will flash a custom rom.
Download and install Super Manager. Pretty handy program to use for Root users.
I'm not sure what the issue is,but mine does it too. I'm running the "unofficial" froyo JK2 build, flashed via ODIN,and I'm having the same issues. root works, root file explorer is stuck in rw,won't let me switch to ro,and it can't do anything to files in / or /system. manually remounting it from terminal or sgs tools works.

At least I am not the only one with this problem.... haha
I forgot to mention that I use Root Explorer version 2.12.2
When I try a custom Rom I will post the results....
^ why not get the update, .4 is the most recent build. Do you have an illegal copy?
It's not only root explorer. It happens with other file explorers too like android mate and super manager... Inside system folder whatever, I do doesn't happen unless I unmount and remount like before

[Q] Please help me... (problems with md5sum mismatch)

Hello,
I am having a major problem... earlier today i made a backup of my ics'd out v8 rom in order to try the new CM7 Kang. I got the kang running but needed to install gapps. For some reason rom manager was not letting me install it from there because it wasn't an updated version of rom manager and i couldn't get an updated version. So i figured I would go back to my ics'd rom, download gapps on the sdcard, and then go back to cm7 to install... NOPE.
Every time I try to restore my backup I get md5 mismatch error. I went through a bunch of different threads for different phones and tried all the adb stuff it said and nothing worked. For some reason when I ran the command (given here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714114) "cd /sdcard..." the pound # changed to a > and everything I typed would just be repeated back at me. The phone never even asked for superuser permission. I am pretty sure that I have the adb stuff right since when I type in "adb devices" in command I see the device, but I just have no clue how to fix this. Maybe the instructions given on this page only applies to that particular phone?
I would really like to be able to recover this backup and if anyone has instructions on how to fix this error on this phone it would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!
ADB was working if you got a # prompt
Custom kernels are almost all "insecure" kernels - ADB sessions automatically have root permissions.
This was the case for you - a # prompt means you have root privileges.
A $ prompt means you don't
A > prompt means that something you typed on the previous line made the shell decide you wanted to type more before executing the command. Control-C will break out of this. So if you got a > prompt after the "cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/blahblah" command - you mistyped something on that line. Possibly you put a ; in there by accident, or you have opening quotes without closing quotes
There is a comment later in that thread "the folder name for your backup couldn't have spaces in it" - Weird characters in the directory name would be a possible cause of your cd command failing.
CWM should never have created a folder name that behaves like this, unless you did a nandroid backup using ROM Manager. If you did - another reason NOT to use ROM Manager.
Did you change the file name of the backup? make sure there is no spaces in file name. hope this help.
I would just download gapps to computer then move the file to phone. Then reboot into cwm and flash galls.

I did change the name from the original name, I added like "ics'doutv8siyah2.6.1blahblahblah" to the beginning so that I could distinguish which backup was which. Could this make a difference? I mean I have done this before without issue.

Change it back and see if it works
Only letters, numbers and periods. the ' is probably to blame.

Well I deleted the beginning and it looked like it was going to work because it was checking md5 sums for a while and then it said md5 mismatch. But it wasn't instant like the other times.
I think I read on one of the pages that you could take the nandroid.md5 from another backup and replace it with the one in the nonworking backup, is this true and would it work?
Ok nevermind, I forgot to do the ADB thing again xD it worked... THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Most likely.
I usually rename my backups manually to something like romname_date in ADB
e.g.
villainrom_1224
I NEVER put spaces or other characters in the rom name
Right now I think I have:
modstock_1128
villainrom_1224
uckk6_1224
one other ROM...
Ok guys I'm sorry, it happened again... except this time I think it may be a problem with ADB. When I am in adb shell, it shows up as "~ #" instead of just "#", however, typing "su" changed it to just "#". However, in both instances ("~ #" and "#") it gets an error:
~ # cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-01-22.18.04.05
cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-01-22.18.04.05
/sbin/sh: cd: can't cd to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-01-22.18.04.05
and
# cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-01-22.18.04.05
cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-01-22.18.04.05
cd: can't cd to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-01-22.18.04.05
This is the original name, there are no spaces, I checked the driver for the phone, etc.
Anyone got any ideas?
Oops double post -_-
Try tab-completion (type part of a directory name and hit tab - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, usually should work when ADBing into CWM), and use "cd" and "ls" to navigate through directories instead of just pasting the whole path.
ls = same thing as dir in DOS
Alright so I did that and found out the sdcard isn't mounting...
C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb shell
~ # su
su
# ls
ls
acct fota.rc recovery.rc
app-cache init res
cache init.goldfish.rc sbin
config init.rc sdcard
customkernel init.smdkc210.rc sys
d init.smdkv310.rc system
data init_kernel_only.rc tmp
dbdata lib ueventd.rc
default.prop lpm.rc ueventd.smdkc210.rc
dev misc ueventd.smdkv310.rc
efs mnt vendor
etc proc
# cd /mnt
cd /mnt
# ls
ls
asec obb sdcard secure usb
# cd /sdcard
cd /sdcard
# ls
ls
#
I also went into root explorer and it said "SD card is not currently mounted"
...uhhh I feel like a noob to ask this but, how do you mount it? xD
The thing is, though, that it dismounts when I plug it into the computer to transfer files/adb, but it is mounted afterwards...

[Q] How to ADB push?

I'm trying to push files to /system via ADB. However I'm having problems (getting permission errors). I am running Eclipse 2.0.2, so yes, my phone is rooted, I have su and busybox.
Phone is connected to PC and is set as "USB Mass Storage".
USB Debugging is ON
Here is my CMD log:
Code:
C:\android-sdk\tools>adb remount
remount failed: Operation not permitted
I tried to remount and it failed
Code:
C:\android-sdk\tools>adb push C:\myfile.apk /system
failed to copy 'C:\myfile.apk' to
'/system/myfile.apk': Read-only file system
I tried to push, and got a READ-ONLY FILE SYSTEM error (keep this in mind)
Code:
C:\android-sdk\tools>adb shell
$ adb push C:\myfile.apk /system
adb push C:\myfile.apk /system
adb: permission denied
I try to push inside of ADB shell. Nothing again...
Code:
$ su
su
# mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
# exit
exit
I go into SU and attempt to remount the /system
Code:
$ adb push C:\myfile.apk /system
adb push C:\myfile.apk /system
adb: permission denied
$ exit
exit
I go back up to ADB shell and try to push again... same error as before
Code:
C:\android-sdk\tools>adb push C:\myfile.apk /system
failed to copy 'C:\myfile.apk' to '/system/myfile.apk': Permission denied
I go back to the main command line and try to push again. This time I get PERMISSION DENIED. This error is different than before.
Any help on the matter?
I've read about ro.secure needing to be set to 1, but I need to edit the boot.img in order to do this, correct? Does that require an unlocked bootloader? Is root ADB even possible on the DX2.
Thanks!
I am no expert (don't even know if i know enough to b called a newb) but maybe try a root explorer. I use es file explorer because it's free. In settings check root explorer and mount file system. I received similar errors and this solved my problem.

Make sure there are no spaces in the file path to your android-sdk folder. Can't say if this is your issue but its worth a shot as it has always caused weird problems with android development since day one.

Ro.secure is in your local.prop on the root of your phone. As far as your issue you have to reset permissions in order to push to /system. I saw that you were trying to do that but with no success. I believe I know what will help but I will have to find it and repost.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133528
Ok look at the command lines at the bottom of the op. You are going to use adb shell. Follow that almost exactly but adjust according to your directories. Should go into adb shell, gain su permissions, mount /system rw, push your apk, then don't worry about remounting as ro, just reboot. Pay close attention to spaces.

Took me a few days to be able to getting around to trying this, but it didn't work :/ I'm still getting all of the same errors. The /system just doesn't seem to want to mount as RW (even though it is possible when using root explorer).
As for ro.secure in my local.prop, I'm able to edit this but it resets on reboot because (from what I've read) this is a file generated by the kernel

Thanks for that! It's not quite what I'm aiming to eventually do, but did give me more insight on how the whole adb/shell/su systems work. Maybe its because im tired but im confused as to why it wont let you push your files if you have remounted as rw. At that point it should be cake. You gained access to system by remounting it as rw successfully already.

Try:
Code:
adb devices
adb remount
adb push [filename] [destination]
adb reboot
the "adb remount" remounts the fs RW instead of the default RO.
I'm no expert in ADB, but I had run into the same issue as you and for me the fix was to go into ADB SHELL , then type SU to get SU access, then type exit twice to get out of shell completely. Then I tried pushing the APK and it worked fine with no read only errors.
This worked for me on my SGS2, could work for you ! Goodluck !
Come to IRC and I can help you with this. http://webchat.freenode.net Come to the #cm7dx2 channel. I'm usually there... Look for the nick(s) Moon|Work|(something), Moon|Home|(something), or MoonShadow-NM. If the (something) says Busy, I might not answer right away. If it says Away, I'm away from the keyboard and you won't receive a response until I return.
Ciao!
Any update
did you ever get this figured out? I'm having the same frustrations on mine. Mine won't install the 2.3.5 update due to it not recognizing the Quickoffice.apk and I'm trying to push the files manually, but I'm having no luck getting past the same you've posted here.

Do this
Sbf to 2.3.4
(or 2.3.3& take one ota To get to 2.3.4...however you want to do it..just be bone stock 2.3.4 )
Root your device.
BUT DO NOT USE ZERGRUSH TO ROOT
Use petes Motorola one click root method.
Then continue the process as normal from there on out.
Trust me in this. Zergrush root method is not playing nice with your /system partition, (if you notice during the root process it might say something like "making room in system,"= or "moving/deleting app to make room" something similar)
And when it does that, it's messing up how the update checks for untouched stock apps.
Let me know how it goes.
This solution has worked for COUNTLESS others so far, zergrush has always been the culprit when it comes to failing to find certain apk or system file that needs to be there for the update to install.

Try:
Code:
adb devices
adb remount
adb push [filename] [destination]
adb reboot
the "adb remount" remounts the fs RW instead of the default RO.

This won't work with Eclipse since it's not using 2nd init. I asked this question in the Eclipse forums and Nitro responded with the following:
Not without using 2nd init. All of that works due to being able to load its own init.rc which starts services and passes parameters, etc.. during boot time. It is possible to make a stock rom use 2nd init. CM9 will not even have root enabled by default. The only other way to push stuff is to enable root shell prior to pushing.

I know that CM7 allows using the adb remount, but that's because it's using 2nd init. I had also asked the question about why CM7 defaults to root shell when you adb shell into it and that's why he mentions how CM9 won't have root enabled by default.
The way I push to Eclipse is to run root explorer on my phone and mount the directory r/w. Then, I can use "adb push" to the phone.

I think I may have tried that in one of my iterations. Originally I had it rooted with One-Click and then I was having issues with the 2.3.5 OTA update (quickoffice.apk) and at this point I've SBF'ed and rooted it probably 5 times this week so far. Rooted with both One-click and zergRush at various times. Actually I think every time except this last time has been with one-click. So I don't think that has seemed to make a difference for me so far. I can try it again, but if there's any other advice to throw out in the mean time, I'll take it.
Alternatively, I may take the new phone (the first replacement they sent had 2.3.5 on it, but a bad menu key causing the phone to flip out), load Titanium Backup on it, backup all the system apps and restore them to my original phone. Worst case is I have to SBF it again. But that seems like a logical process since I will have two phones available.

[Q] What Up with Ad-blocking?

I cannot get the ad blocking host files to stick with this device. I have tried both Adfree Android and Adaway. The host files won't survive a reboot. Sometimes, I apply them and they revert back after a few hours of use. I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue on this device. SU is functioning properly.
Peace
Not exactly the same, but I noticed any app I remove via Titanium Backup gets restored on reboot as well.
Both of these actions require writing to /system, which cannot be done with android booted up, until we have s-off.
Every time I try to write to system (On accident by running some root app without thinking about it) my device reboots. I figured that was normal for a rooted S-on device. That doesn't happen to y'all?

I am pretty sure I was able to do this on the Rezound prior to S off. Also, how can one flash a ROM if your not able to write to the system?
I just want to understand this a little bit better. Thanks.

you can not write to /system with android booted up.
So you can flash a rom in recovery but you cant edit anything in /system while in android

On all the newer phones, HTC (or Verizon) write-locked \system while the phone is booted in android. :good: But you're right, on the Rezound, you could write to \system while still S-ON.
so I guess to debloat, someone will have to make one of those debloating tools that delete through adb.

This has already been done my friend look in the development section. Also I think I saw a script that you can run in recovery that ads ad blocking hosts! CHEERS:highfive:
Here you go:
ad block is on that other site => http://rootzwiki.com/topic/36775-mod-debloater-adblock-restore-v3/
and theres some debloat love here in development => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012388

Freezing in TiBu appears to work.
Going to have a go with AdBlock Plus since its supposed to work without root.

Screw that who wants that running in the background, run AdFree and update hosts, hook up USB with debugging on and use ADB:
"adb shell" then "su" and grant yourself root. Then "cp /system/etc/hosts /sdcard" then type "exit" and "exit" to get out of the shell.
Then run "adb reboot recovery" and mount /system partition in recovery. Then "adb shell" and "cp /sdcard/hosts /system/etc/hosts" -- exit shell and reboot
Done
Do this or just push the host file http://db.tt/LQAUEcZM to /system/etc/ with the built in TWRP file manager if you don't want to use ADB.

Is anybody having trouble creating this symlink as instructed in AdAway on their Droid DNA?
I type the command and all I get is "ln: /system/etc/hosts: File exists"
I exit, reboot and the app still tells me the symlink is missing.
I'll be the first to admit my adb-fu is weak, probably my fault.
Edit: so, I did it the other way. When the app tells you the symlink failed it still creates a hosts file in data/data. I used TWRP/Advanced/File Manager to move this into system/etc.
Still, it would be nice to get the symlink working and have AdAway update automatically rather than having to go through this process periodically.

This is exactly what I did. I used root explorer to copy the host file from /system/etc and pasted it on the sdcard
Rebooted into recovery, mounted /sdcard and /system and ran adb to push the file
viola! done
^^
I think that's basically doing the same thing I did, but still the symlink would be nice so it could be automatically updated.

OK, got a little tech support off the DNA IRC. As I suspected, I'm just dumb
Make sure to delete any existing system/etc/hosts and data/data/hosts before you run the command.
Works fine now!
Now that we have s-off, what are you guys using to block ads?

The same thing we've been doing for the past 3 months. Nothing had changed in that respect since kernels with system write enabled came out.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app

[Q] [help]how to get system folder permission for hdx7

I just play andorid device a few days, but My hdx7 is a little bricked because i deleted some system app. Now I can log in fire os, have adb, usb connected and internal storge, even i can operate device setting app, but i can't open the other app because i don't have a desktop.
I compare system/app folder with the same folder in the amazon bin, found that the folder lack of scores of app, but the other system folder is the same. So I hope can adb push app folder to the system folder, but the pemission denied. I try to remount or mount, it can't work.
if adb root, then "adbd cannot run as root in production builds.
if adb push apk to the app folder, then “permission denied".
if adb remount, then ”remount failed: Operation not permitted".
and I have try adb shell like that:
# su
# mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# chmod 777 /system
# exit
it didn't work.
my hdx7 have rooted.
My Questions are:
1. If I could push the app folder to the system folder and reset to factory, is my hdx saved?
2. How to get the system folder rw in the situation?
thx for any prompt, although i am a rookie but i will try my best, i wish the adept can help me and will be enormously grateful. Sorry for my poor english.
It sounds to me that you had lost root.

Hmmm... It says you still have root (the prompt changed after "su")
I personally don't use ADB much. I have Root Explorer (grabbed it legally for free from Amazon ages ago) and Wifi Explorer Pro (same method) so I basically WiFi myself the files I need sideloaded then move them around on the device itself. But if you've lost launcher, you have deeper issues.
Have you tried ADB push any launcher? Or even a download store like 1Mobile or Aptoide?
ADB is basically a Linux shell debug into Android, so you need to learn some Unix shell commands. I'm sure you can find ADB guides with the basic commands, like "ls", "cp", and so on.
You need to check the directory and see if the system/app and other system directories are still there. This is one reason I only play with the copy of ROM I have (see Safestrap Recovery).
