He is a huge loss in this forum....

owain: "...do you know something about java or C# i AM a dev and you are not..."
Ron Eugine: "...For your info...its written in c/c++ and java..."
So, truth is that C# is far from Android.
Ron: "...all your roms were cooked you have never compiled anything...".
So, it sounds strange for me that how can say that "I'm developer" if "never compiled anything"...
Perhaps I'm too oldscool. I feel hard myself by dramas.

gonna miss owain and mikevhl and fully understand the why's

How to learn creating custom ROM

I wish to ask the expert custom ROM makers here what knowledge do I need to learn how to make custom ROMs. My background is I am a programmer and developer in windows and web applications for 15 years. So where should I start? Thank you.

Best advice is to learn about android, learn some app development etc.
Unless you want to become a 7zip chef. That's easy.

Whats 7zip chef? Yes I know a little about app development with android. Android is java and I used to be Java certified since Java has been released by sun. Any other knowledge gap I need to fill? Should I learn more of linux stuffs?

:0 start learning "how to place the question in the right topic"...
i believe if u gonna make research and if u will pm some of the many developers here - maybe one that lives close to your area- he/she will help u out for sure with some details. i dont think they will release the details for public...otherwise use google mate.
Moved to Q&A
First best to learn about android in general. There are way too many people here who think applying a theme to a zipped stock rom makes them cool...
If you want to be regarded as a dev, stick to the coding side As you know java, smali should be simple to you..
Learn how to modify binary applications etc.
Don't fall into the lame "7zip to open the rom, drag and drop a few files, then re-zip" that some people (can they even be called people???) do... And stick away from theming something and calling it a rom.
It's just lame and not cool... But if you read up on how android works, you will get the hang quickly, and if you are knowledgeable about java, it should be easy to get going modifying things... Then you will truly join the "devs" and be one of the bunch

Completely aggree.
The main problem (just my point of view) is that those "noobs" ignore any compents (if I think on hephappy's thread) and think they know everything.
And because they don't work on there own project, they don't know how much work (all in the free time of the devs) has to be done.
Don't worry
Don't worry!
My roms are available via Rom Manager.
Rom manager -> Download rom -> hephappy -> Select rom
No more xda = no more noobs...
Rom manager note:
ROM hosting is free. ROMs hosted via ROM Manager Developer Portal will be listed
in the free section 5 days of the week. The other 2 days of the week, it will be
listed in the premium section. The days may vary from developer to developer
so not all developers are in the premium section at the same time.

I kinda agree here, developers get all the respect, praise and following but they get bossy and abusive at times. Evrerybody likes to have good ROMs but not at the price of self respect I guess.
Everybody has a noob stage in life or maybe someone who you call noob at XDA might be a scholar in his field so XDA is not the end of the world. The best way to treat somebody who you dont like is to 'ignore'.
If a dev has 500 fans and 50 of them are ignorant noobs, even then its not a bad deal.
MORAL: Everybody start giving respect, dont be short tempered, value devs work and try to ignore if thats the only option.
Cheers!

Everybody is a "noob" at one time.Lot of people think they are the boss and call others noobs, but that pretty much wont last long.I ain't a developer but love all the developing works in here. Its really obvious from the thank meters of great devs, how much respected they are in this community.
Not anybody is born really intelligent and talented.
Everybody learn something from others and improve it.That is how the system works.
Everybody has their own field which they are perfect at.In that field, the "bosses" in here could be noobs.
I think everybody should learn to respect others to gain respect.

100% Noob for Reason and Courtesy
I have been a professional developer but for internals and ROMs, I am 100% "Noob." Most of what I see on this little thread is much less than helpful. Enough already.
Anyone who read my posts would see that my tone does not fit the stereotype be harangued here. I do not use the F word, the S word, make ridiculous claims and demands of more experienced (fantastic!) "Devs." Any suggestions I make are with respect and humility. Maybe the ideas will pan out, maybe not.
If I do not have CM10 on this old phone, I am delighted with ICS. (Indeed, Google Now will soon enough work here without JB, a matter of time and ingenuity.) I do hope JB (or as I have termed in more realistically "Jelly-Sandwich") will work on the phone, but there are other things in life. I did not enter XDA for all the negativity and tension. Friendship and respect are more important the ROMs and tweaks.
I dont read p500 so munch like old time, im have buy new device and i busy with that, but this problem has rolling day by day, even before arjen and adam start developing here, it has make alot of casualties like andy, doctornotor, etc..
What you expect from from developer?
Their ideas, their works, their time, so i think they must have bigger egos than me, im just a Leacher... Just download and give feedbacks if you like their works, or leave it like that if you hate he/his works. No need flaming, another person have their glasses and viewpoint.
Xda is made for us. we here for our needs, even every devices will death development, we just try make as long as we can, and flaming is not the way to make our beloved p500 ageless like htc hero...
Thx for all developers That i known for 1.5years till now day in this section... GBU.

Its high time that we stop all this and come to normal mode, cooperate and make this community a great place to do better things.

If you honestly have to ask a question like that in a forum like this, I doubt you have the aptitude/initiative to learn the necessary skills. If you did have those skills, you'd already know the answers to that question.
Edit - OK. I'll throw you a bone. Java, C, and no doubt you could use others. Now then, I think you have a lot of learning to code to do.

It's mildly insulting to me and anyone else who has studied Computer Science that you seem to think you can learn how to create apps off a tutorial. No doubt you think you can learn how to do this after just a couple of hours reading this magic "java c tutrial".

Ahm,
Being a self-taught programmer, I'll feed the troll:
Go to youtube, find a tutorial on how to install "Eclipse", maybe even "Eclipse for Android".
Go to google and type "learning java for android".
You can probably get a 'hello world' app going in under a day if you have any aptitude.
That's it, troll fed.

Self taught is one thing. It still takes a lot of time and effort. Seeing as how this dude clearly can't seem to search for himself, I would venture a guess he doesn't have the aptitude necessary to learn how to do this on his own.

[Q] I want to learn how to develop for Android but...

I've been wanting to get into development more and more recently, and Android seems like a pretty awesome platform to develop apps for.
I ultimately want to develop a basis for a 2D OpenGL ES game that I can expand on, and also develop a chat client that works on XMPP and can detect when certain apps are opened and closed, and how long their open for.
I have... zero experience with any actual coding also, aside from maybe a few copy/paste edits on some random C++ stuff back in the day. Only real reason I haven't actually just "dove in" to Android development was because it looked... really confusing? Idk...
Is there any guides or learning methods anyone can recommend to help me out? I'm thinking I should just start from http://developer.android.com/training/index.html and just go from there, but is that the best place for beginners, or is that basically for people who have experience with some coding?
AW: [Q] I want to learn how to develop for Android but...
First you should watch the series on youtube from adam outler on how to build youd first app.

Another great resource for beginning Android development in the New Boston Android development tutorials http://thenewboston.org/list.php?cat=6. They cover topics ranging from the basics to making a simple game with OpenGL. And don't be intimidated by the time needed to learn everyone starts as a beginner when they learn something new but with practice you'll be writing great apps before you know it. The key is practicing with a positive attitude .

[Q] Wich course choose to start developing

Hi everybody,
I'm an Italian guy who's looking for starting developing on android, but right now I'm pretty doubtful about wich course to start from.
I'm gonna explain you my plan:
I was looking for an Android course in E-Leaning mode and after a deep research I found a good IT italian school that uses the Cisco Webex platform (they made me try it with a tutor of them).
They do courses for Java, Android, and many others..
I thought that instead of starting directly to Android, I would need some Java skills, then I was thinking to apply the Java basic course (40 hours + OCA certification that could also be a good thing for my Cv) on first, then in a second moment apply the Android developing course (80 hours).
I'm an IT technician, doing Helpdesk and similar things, i studied programming at the high school, ending with java and databases in the last year, but it has been 4 years ago and I don't remember it so well..I'm more skilled in programming languages like C, Visual Basic and similar..
About Java, I just remember a few things about Object Oriented..
Somebody told me that I don't need Java to learn Android, cause they're different.
Finally the question is, what would you suggest me to do?
Learning Java, then Android is the perfect thing to do. As Android app basically contains both XML and Java, if you're skilled enough in Java, then developing in Android will be much easy.
Learn c,c++, java.. then ur good 2 go

C was my best..but never did anything of C++.
Then finally I applied to the Java course. :victory:
Thanks for your advices, I'd appreciate to read more about your thought on the subject.
Btw let's see how it goes
Take a breath and skip the Java course
There is no better learning than actually applying a skill in trying to solve a real problem. This applies even if you're just starting to learn a language. Will you end up learning more if you take both courses? Yes. Will your CV look more impressive? Maybe. Is it a good way to spend your time? I'm not so sure.
The truth is, jumping directly into Android development will quickly improve your Java skills as well. If you have some knowledge of C and VB, you will be able to follow along from the very beginning. It might be slightly overwhelming at first, but I guarantee that after the first couple of exercises, your "lack" of Java knowledge will no longer slow you down. And if you get stuck with any Java-specific issue, the answer is always on the web a couple of Google searches away.
If I were you, I'd save time and money and go directly for Android. After that is done, you can spend your spare 40 hours on something that will give you a better bang for your buck, for example a UI design course. Or maybe iPhone development.
is there any video material course like bootcamp but for android studio, it takes a while for me to get where to look since its not same order of files and things when you work with eclipse and android studio
