Flashing difference between Samsung and HTC? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, i'm currently with a HTC Desire and the procedure to flash a new ROM was first to flash a moded bootloader and a recovery from which you could just flash any .zip ROMs...
I'm not familiar with samsung, but I see that there is a tool called ODIN which you use to flash.
Can someone explain the difference? Will we always need a PC to flash a ROM or will be there a possibility to have a moded bootloader + recovery?

odin is to flash the .tar roms , mostly stock roms . In Galaxy s series if you have a hacked recovery like cwm 2/3 you can flash .zip roms also .

Diffrence 1%
We are doing the same but flashing the kernel + recovery with ODIN and then everything is the same
Also we are flashing ROM's with recovery, there is no need of PC, just to download the ROM's.
I'm not sure but, the bootloader is unlocked so, do we need to flash modded bootloader !?
Strange to me.

[Q] Need help understanding root, firmware, kernals and roms

Hey Forum,
I was hoping you guys would be able to help me out. i'm coming from the HTC Legend and kinda lost when it comes to Samsung.
1. what is all this firmware info i keep seeing? is it just the firmware or do i have to match current firmware on my phone to the firmware of the ROM i want to flash?
2. kernels do i flash a ROM and kernel each time or is it all ROM's come with a kernel? or is it the same as HTC, once you find a ROM just flash it through CWM?
3. how do i get root? should i just flash CF-root and then flash ROM's from there?
I'm sorry for asking i know that all this information should be somewhere but most guides seem to be written with the assumption that you owned a Samsung device previously
A big thanks to anyone who can help
thanks,

No try any firmware a before b 3 after 2

Roms are with a kernel Flash depends upon the roms instructions but most are CWM except for stock roms .

Follow the root thread .
Root + CWM .

Flashing etc

How come i need to flash kernels when flashing roms, when i had htc desire all i had to do was flash the rom (.zip file). So how do i know what kernel goes with what rom. anyone able to explain this? i am not really dumb to rooting in general just new to this way of flashing. thank you.
First of all, this thread should be in the Q&A forum.
Answer your question: Because flashing the .zip ROM needs to be done in CWM. But for sony devices, the recovery is bundled with kernel (in .elf file). That's why you need to flash kernel (with CWM) before flashing the .zip ROM.

oh i see, thank you for answering my question. if i have CWM installed i don't need to flash kernel right? just .zip?
i didn't post this in Q&A cause i can't view any sections in sony xperia s sub-forum. i got this section of the forum via Google link. i have allowed no-script for this site but it just keeps refreshing the page so i had to disable JS for this site. I got a fix tho i will Google the other 'sections' and just bookmark them.
Not exactly. Some ROMs have their own specific kernel. Although your device has CWM installed, you may need to flash kernel which is compatible with ROM you're going to install separately.
Fortunately, some ROMs have their own kernel (boot.img) bundled in the zip, for example, CM10 and MIUI. While flashing these ROMs, their update script automatically installs the kernel while installing other stuffs needed. So in these cases you don't need to manually flash kernel, just flash ROM via CWM.
However, this is only applicable with some ROMs, not all. I suggest you read the installation instruction in each ROM's thread and some comments (use search button to search the thread). There should be somewhere in the thread tells you which kernels are compatible with the ROM you're going to install.
There are loads of different kernels for the Desire as well, the different ROM's were just a bit less fussy on which kernel you used.

[Q] Xperia ray rooting procedure

Hey! Guys,
I wanted to know what are the steps to follow in-order to install a custom ROM on my xperia ray. I've read few tutorial but still I've got some questions to clarify. Just tell me whether below steps are correct.
First root the device
Unlock the boot loader
Flash a custom ROM
And if I'm installing a custom ROM on to my device I want to achieve below point too.
Want a complete back up with SMS/MMS, Apps ..etc (can be acheived via some back-up apps)
Want to take a complete copy of my current stock firmware (as a ftf file)
Any else, that I should follow which I missed here ...
I'm still curious about this.. Please advise me if I missed anything here since I'm a newbie when it comes to android rooting, flashing stuffs..

OK, root is really important  I think you should also get cwm recovery as step 2 and figure out how to use it before you unlock your boot loader. There are a bunch of ROMs in Ray Dev that are for unlocked boot loaders so you can try some things out and get comfortable flashing with cwm and/or flashtool. If you find that you like what you are doing, then unlock the boot loader. It probably will only take a day or two to figure out cwm and how flashing with cwm and flashtool work, but by then you will be a lot more comfortable with the instructions for unlocking your boot loader and you will be less likely to end up in a bad place and people will be able to help you better, since you already know how to do most of the stuff.
Thread moved. Questions belong here in Q&A.
Thanks

Asking for good roms is not allowed
There are a few MIUI roms for example or you could try MiniCMSandwich for AOSP style, just search around in development section and find your favourite!

Help needed correct recovery !!

Hi all, ok ive rooted my GS3 and its running 4.1.2 , but my question is that im not sure its going into proper recovery mode as when i put it into recovery it doesnt look like the usual recovery screen !! ie im trying to install the Audio hack zip and flash it but it keeps failing everytime i try, can somebody please help me, also is it because it needs a diferent rom like Omega or something, hope to get some help soon, from
Brian
You need to install Custom Recovery first... (CWM or any other)
Rooting only doesn't include CWM...
Use Odin to flash it.
thankyou
Hi and thankyou for that, so when you say i have to install flash a custom recovery, do you mean i have to install a new rom like omega or something ? and yes i do have Odin.

Just go to original development and you will find a choice of 2 or 3, you can flash them in Odin/cwm/mobile Odin depending on their format so read instructions

[Q] s3 I9300 not rooting...tried all method

hello devs,
i have an international variant GT-I9300 . I upgraded it with the ATO(OPEN AUSTRIA) . After this upgrade ,i was not able to root ...i used the CF AUTO ROOT , SUPERSU , and even mobogeine root method . its getting failed....
please help me devs......i would like to root it...either to get a stable international variant ROM.
If you intend to then flash a custom rom then don't bother rooting your stock firmware, all custom roms are already rooted.
If you want to stay stock then flash a prerooted version via odin, get a link for one on xda in general forum.

i checked the whole procedure of it as u told.... but while i am flashing CFROOT but it is showing "FAILED SIGNATURE VERIFICATION" . and the same thing for superSU ......
so...in case if i flash PHILZ RECOVERY or CWM ......without rooting........ will my phone get bricked ???...
Check out Cyanogenmod Installer follow the instrustion it will root and install the latest stable CM for your phone .
You are still missing basic knowledge, you can't flash anything with stock recovery.
Flashing recovery doesn't require root, but you can brick the phone if you don't understand what you are doing.
