[Q] Web browsing and Mobile view - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just purchased mine today and extremely happy!
Plays all my Gameloft titles superbly and all my HD Movies!
Only gripe I have so far is with the Web browsing suprisngly enough.
Web browsing
I don't seem to be able to turn off mobile view for web pages.
On the HTC devices there was on simple tick box within the internet settings.
Is there another way round this?

Type about:useragent in navigation bar and select a desktop useragent.

download dolphin mini.. stock browser blows

I use one called boat browser tried opera mini but it doesn't support flash so pointless, why I don't like the stock browser it doesn't have text re-flow option like the others have, so it keeps text readable without having to pan left and right to see it all.

Web browser that gives full browsing ability?

I'm currently using Opera and I really like it however I notice that when I'm on certain websites it still treats everything like its a mobile browser. (yes I realize it is). Like Facebook for example, it doesn't bring up that chat functions at all. Is there a browser that has true full blown browsing ability as if your on a regular comp?
In Opera you can change user agent and then all web pages are loaded like on desktop!
In Dolphin HD, they even have a widget to switch back and forth between mobile and desktop user-agents at the touch of a single button, so you can go with whichever works better on the nook for a particular page. Mostly, I keep it set to desktop, but occasionally a site looks better as android.
found that TUT : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12285171&postcount=1
Personally, I prefer Miren. Opera is awesome, but its UA is typically passed as IE and Opera doesn't render all IE fixes the same as IE. Miren can be set to view as desktop and it still uses the webkit engine for rendering.

I've been using Opera since I was rooted stock 1.1. Recently I flashed Phiremod 6.2 and changed the user agent in Opera to desktop browser mode. OMG, this is the tablet I've always dreamed of.
Here's how:

is it possible to set the agent permanently?

Not sure what you mean. The setting stick for me.
In Opera, how do you keep the page from moving around? Is there a way to make the columns snap into place after you zoom in. thxs

Unfortunately, no. Not with this version. Not that anyone's been able to find, anyway. One of my peeves with Opera. It's just too damn good to give up, though.
If U dont want to change hidden settings for Opera, why dont U just use Dolphin which has this as a standard option?

to modify user agent.
1. download opera mobile from market (not mini)
2. open it and in the url bar type--> opera:config
3. scroll down to the second to last option 'User Prefs'
4. expand it and look for 'Custom User-Agent', it will be empty.
5. enter --> Opera/9.80 (Linux; en) Presto/2.7.81 Version/11.00
6. scroll down way to the bottom and hit save, close, and re-open.
7. go to cnn (full site) and compare scrolling with stock vs. opera mobile. much better.

Yep, enter that exactly everything after -->
i was going to put it in quotes, but then people add the quotes.
you can test cnn.com for a test. that would normally default to mobile site. once you save pref. and restart opera, you'll be good.

What Browsers do not have problem in search this forum here??

Surprised me not a lot of posts on this problem here.
I have been unable to use the stock browser to do the "search in this forum" here with my Transformer and Transformer Prime. I tried the ICS Browser+, and the Xscope. They are all the same - When I click on the "Search in This Forum" button, the dialogue box and the keyboard show up It does not matter what keyboard I use, be it the Asus keyboard or my favorite Thumb keyboard, the keyboard just disappear faster than I can type.
I researched here and someone has this problem back to 2010 or 2011...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=950030
Well, well, well, by accident, I found the browser that does what it should do today, it is the Firefox. Well, it is not the fastest browser. So my question is, what browser you use that can do this "search in this forum"?
Don't tell me to us Tapatalk or the XDA developer app, or use my PC though, I am talking browser for Transformer...
I had problems galore with stock browser. Installed Dolphin browser and everything works beautifully now. The speed is greatly improved as well.
Why not use the xda app?
Oops just read your post lol

Yep, very annoying. I usually just click on advanced search so that a new window pops up. It is this way on my phone in gingerbread as well.

My bionic does it as well. It seems like a lot of sites are making it much harder for mobile mobile users to use the full site. I absolutely hate mobile sites so I browse in desktop mode and many sites that worked just fine now require me to switch over to mobile veiw to post or search and some will not even allow any interaction anymore and where perfect just a few months ago. I rarely use rootzwiki since it changed and I have to constantly switch between desktop and mobile veiw to do anything.

There needs to be a web browser designed for Android tablets

or PC browser ported to Android tablets because I'm tired of getting redirected to mobile phone friendly pages of websites when my Transformer Prime has the same resolution as my 12.1" laptop and thus is capable of displaying websites at the same size.
Why does it look like there's nothing being done about this?
Why does this browser even give off the detail to websites as if the system it's operating on is a mobile phone. There should least be a way to turn this feature off. I'm annoyed by it.
Lots of browsers in the market allow you to disable the mobile version. E.g. ics+ browser.

+1 ICS browser+ is great desktop view option owns!
Problem solved. Downloaded the Dolphin browser from the Marketplace.
This browser looks amazing and is loaded with features. I've already set it to my default browser. The default ICS browser even makes Internet Explorer seem amazing.
HAHAHAHA
Maybe better then IE8. On par with IE9 i would say.
Boat Browser is the best one out there by far imo.
Once you try xScope you stop trying the other ones.
xScope is my favorite and I've tried them all

this. I have tried several browsers, none looked and felt as great as Boat
It's all about Firefox Mobile. Give it a try, the awesome tablet UI and plethora of extensions just can't be beat.

There's the great ICS+ improved by a fellow XDA developers member, great stuff indeed.
Cheers

Desktop browsing with Stock Browser - no additional software needed
If you would prefer the Desktop view of websites, rather than the Mobile view, then there is an easy way to change it without using any third party app.
Open the standard browser and type about:debug into the browser's address bar. Then go to Menu > Settings. You should have a new option called Debug. Press Debug, then on the right side press UAstring and change the option to Desktop.
Websites should now be displayed as they would on a computer desktop browser.
Other options are: iphone, ipad, android (default), honeycomb.
Thanks..

Try this:
1) Make a new shortcut to a website (doesn't matter which one, this is just a workaround)
2) Edit that newly created shortcut, make the URL point to 'about:useragent' (without the quotes)
3) If you click on the shortcut nothing will happen. BUT if you now click on the addres bar of the browser the URL should be there. Just press enter.
4) Select the client you want your device to mimic
This doesn't save the client, so you will have to repeat steps 3 & 4 every time you restart the browser. But is a tiny bit more comfortable than editing a configration file I think

[Q] Multiple tasks

Is it possible to leave programs running in the background with some setting or an app. I use few tv programs and videoplayers and it would be nice to leave them running in the background so I can hear the sound but still surf the web and stuff like that.
Now when I go to home screen the program just freezes/pauses.
Thanks in advance.
I use OverSkreen browser when I want to do that. You can resize it so you can watch something in one window while browsing in another window. Works great.

Yes, I was looking for a solution like overskreen, but with videos and such. But I guess there is not one.

Have you tried Maxthon HD Tablet browser?

If not you should. It is a revelation of speed and good design.
1) Web pages load fast and look great.
2) Super clean interface.
3) Bookmarks are easily organized with cloud syncing and backup.
4) Bookmark tree retains your last position.
5) Features prefetch and fast back (you have the option to return to a cached page when hitting the back button as opposed to the page reloading. This can save A LOT of time).
6) While flash animations won't play, YouTube and embedded videos seem to load quickly and play without lag.
7) Has a desktop version which will sync as Chrome does.
I've tried them all and for me, this is the premier tablet browser available today. Check it out in the Market. There are 3 versions. Pick the Tablet one. It's the best.
Your right.
Not an option in my book. If it doesnt sync with my desktop browser i don't use it.

Just wish Chrome would finally give us sidebar bookmarks like Dolphin. I'd be on it in a second. Bookmarks in Chrome are so multistep and kludgy to use.

People have been wondering for years why Chrome refuses to do sidebar bookmarks. There is a nice addon for desktop but nothing for mobile. They would double their user base overnight with that one simple addition. But they WILL NOT.
I am trying it out tonight. Thanks Mitchell!

Cool. And by the way, you can sync your bookmarks over the cloud using this just like Chrome and use it on your PC desktop as well. I especially like the way it caches pages so you can go back and forth without reloading.

I just wish Maxthon implemented gestures as deeply as Dolphin. I like using a gesture to turn javascript on and off on the fly. Can do it with Maxthon the old fashioned way but takes more steps. Nevertheless, if that isn't a priority for you it is a great browser and offers a desktop version which dolphin does not.
Does it have modules like Firefox? Can't use any browser without adblock at least.
Here's the link to their extensions center.
http://extension.maxthon.com/
Didn't see anything specifically to block ads but it may be there under different name. There are tons.
Great find. Lots of potential but still buggy.

Yes a few quirks but don't they all?
Hi.. Anyone know which tablet support invert colour or built in black background with white text? I don't like night mode on every browser I've tried cause its not that black, so anyone? I also tried Firefox with black background white text add on, but the browser feel so lag while using the add on which I feel annoyed.
OK mitchellvii,
You MUST try Baidu Browser HD.... TRUST ME.
Tried Baidu HD: looks promising, but sluggish scrolling, gesture support but with too much lag, no auto fullscreen, odd rendering (fonts too small even at settings large)
Im downloading it now and giving it a try. thanks. Ill let u know what I think later.
