[Q] Reverting to stock without Odin - USB not working - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a vibrant that must have a defective usb port. It won't charge. The phone also has other weirdness. Sometimes doesn't turn on. Sometimes goes around in circles. In otherwords, pretty much FUBAR.
It is currently running Bionix V 1.3.1. I am unable to get my pc to see the vibrant with Odin. Odin can see my other vibrant phone.
I would like to put the phone back to stock so I can return it to T-Mobile.
Is there a way to return the phone to stock using clockwork recovery, nandroid backup, or something like that?

There are stock flashable zips. Not certain it will fix your issues. Check the Bible in the dev section.

Here's what to do....
boot your other vibrant that works into recovery.
choose advanced. then choose backup/restore
choose backup
choose yes. let it do the process of backing up.
when its done. plug it into your computer and mount USB
go to the folder choose the folder which is your phone (not the sdcard in your phone) called clockwordmod in there in there should be a folder named something like 2011-5-4 or something that...
copy and paste that folde to your desktop
now copy that same folder to your sdcard. anywhere is good just remember where it is
remove the sdcard from that phone. (advise settings/storage/UNMOUNT)
put the sdcard in your messed up phone
when it finished Scanning Media Card . use Root explorer and copy that folder to the Clockworkmod folder on your phone
reboot to recovery
choosed advanced then choose backup/restore
choose restore
that file should be there
choose it then select "yes"
this will do a nandroid back-up of the ROM on your other phone
It will now have the same ROM as your other phone but should work fine.
this process can be done using any ROM from your other phone
if you want it stock..just revert your GOOD phone to stock FIRST and start from the beginning of my instructions (assuming you know how to Install clockwork mod)

Nice tip but how often do we have an extra phone that is exactly the same laying around? Just saying......

could be your charging port. i went through 3 of them and it is frustrating. check in settings, battery if it is actually charging. everytime mine went bad it would never show its charging. not on the status bar or lockscreen. only when i checked it in settings it showed. and of course it never connects to the pc.
that may be part of your problem. good luck

@itz keefy, he said he has another vibrant......
What are you looking at shortbus......

Where did you get port fixed? My cappy is going bad.
What are you looking at shortbus......

I couldnt fix it, i bout ports off of ebay but the solder is way too small for me to handle. And everyone I talked to wanted from 55 to 75 bucks. I just got the motherboards each time. I probably should have forked out the money to repair it because it seems like the used boards were waiting to go bad anyway. It already cost me over 100 bucks so far

I only paid $100 for the phone, guess I should get on Craigslist.

Lol i am aware of that but i was in the same boat and i dont have another vibrant laying around. I thought for weeks my usb port on the phone was bad but on a hunch a decided to go get a name brand usb cable from tmobile themselves and voila it worked flawlessly. I would check into a new cable from tmobile if you havent already, it solved my problem.

[Q] Need Help !! Amateur Mistake

This is my first smartphone. Samsung Vibrant. I did a root process on it and it went perfectly fine. Then i deleted some bloatware including google talk, talk provider, places, and others i cannot remember. Now my market place will not download anything. It stuck saying "Start Downloading" . I did a factory reset and it seemed to clear a few more apps. I also tried the Filter All, and clear cache on google mail and google storage. Any ideas on how to get my phone running like the day i got it? Im scared im have to get a new one.
thats easy.... just restore the Nandroid backup you performed before changing anything.... you did do a backup right? Next time do a backup before changing anything...
If no backup follow this thread... the nandroid version should work for you... if not research ODIN
I dont see the thread.
I looked at this one: ROM] OFFICIAL T-Mo Vibrant JFD ODIN/Nandroid Backup Images 7/29/10 (Tested/Working)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is the a good thread? Do i just download the 3 files plus update.zip to my computer. Then i would put my phone into download mode. Then what would i do??
This is the right correct nandroid backup. Do you have ClockworkMod installed? If not you have to flash via Odin or find the .apk of clockwork to manually install it since the market is broken. If you manage to install ClockworkMod, unzip the the nandroid backup and put it in the /clockworkmod/backup folder. You can then go to the program and select 'Manage and Restore Backups' and select the '2010-07-24.18.53.50' file and restore. Let the program do it's thing and you are back to the stock rom.
Good luck and remember to nandroid before you do anything to the system folder, flash a kernal, etc. I'm a nandroid freak... I wind up having to delete backups because I have too many lol.

That's the one!! Also, there is a thread that tells you what bloatware apps are safe to remove, after you do a back-up, search for that thread and read through it.
On a side note, if you're still learning or never used odin to flash a rom before; there is also a hidden code that is used for factory format. It'll remove all files and settings including the internal memory storage and reformats it. It'll also reinstall the phone firmware from when you took it out of the box. Just go to your dialer and put *2767*3855# and it will perform the factory format for you.
Hope this helps.
thank you, thank you, im bout to be becoming a freak here soon. im just learning. Im try all this once when i get off work and will reply. AWESOME !!
I installed all three Odin, the PIT and PDA from that thread. I put my phone into download and opened up Odin and placed the files into the correct places. It automatically said thread completed (Succesful:0/Failed:0). Nothing happened. What am i doing wrong??? Who knew phones could be like this hahahaha. Gotta be patient though

Ummmm, not to be a smartass or anything; but did you connect your usb cable from the computer to your phone?
I found that I had better results opening Odin first, loading the PIT and PDA files, then connecting the phone with the battery pulled. Hold the up/down buttons while putting the battery in will get you into download mode. Every time I've gotten into download mode first was a bad flash for me. Odin is really finicky.

Yes, don't delete Google Talk... it's not bloatware. It manages your login tokens for the Market and other google apps.
Have you tried getting the APKs from the Vibrant rom dump and using ADB to push them back to the /system/app folder? Might be quicker and easier than dealing with trying to re-flash.
Is ODIN suppose to automatically suppose to connect to my phone. Is there anything on the ODIN i can look for on the screen that makes sure its connected? And yes everything was connected right. It installed driver software from my phone onto my computer in download. I thought that was kinda weird.

[Q] Cant delete anything.

Hey guys I have been trolling this forum for some very useful information, and it has helped me quite a bit, but on this one I am stuck. Every time I try and delete something on this phone (Samsung Vibrant) it just comes back. This was not my phone before, I am just trying to put it back to stock.
I have flashed the phone 3 times using odin, including using the re-partition option.
When I hook the phone up to the pc, and load update.zip into the root folder, and reboot into recovery mode, it says cannot find sd card/update.zip. Even when I go in and manually delete apps if I reboot the phone, they all just come back.
Am I missing something? part of me wants to say its something easy.. but I have searched and searched about this and found nothing. Is there a mod out there that does this? -Thanks
*edit* Oh, and it seems like any time I think I might get close, I get the little android and the triange w/ the exclamation point.
Bueller?
How are you deleting? What are you deleting? Why are you using odin to delete apps? Not enough info to help you.
Hi, I am just trying to totally wipe the phone back to stock, hence odin. I dont care about info being lost. But like I said.. if I go in and manage applications, and remove them manually, I restart the phone and like magic they are all back.. I am quite confused. I hook the phone up to the pc, open the phone and manually delete pics and songs that way.. unplug the phone from the pc, and its like i never did anything.

If you want to wipe the best thing to do is flash Eugene's Froyo that does not brick. That will get rid of EVERYTHING. From there flash JFD. That will give you the clean start you want.

Yeah, that is the problem. I already did that, and the stuff is still there. I did it 3 times. I flashed it with the 512 pit, did a re-partition and the JFD. Then went back and even updated it to the JI6 firmware, and loaded it with the stock kernel.
I'll help you out before you needlessly flash roms over and over and over.
Before you say, "WTF!!!! That doesn't answer my question" please read to the end.
1. As I understand your problem, you want to wide everything from your INTERNAL SD Card.
2. as such, The steps are as follows:
3. Go to settings.
4. Go to "SD Card and phone storage"
5. "Unmount phone storage"
6. "Format phone storage"
This is assuming that you are ALREADY on stock Rom.
If not, flash the stock first, then wipe your internal SD.
Remove your External SD and SIM card. *(Not required), but i'm paranoid, and this always helps me feel better on the off chance that something does happen while i'm wiping the internal SD.
GL
That was first thing I tried to do, sorry I didnt post that in OP. I tried to unmount and format using the in phone software. I have tried a hard reset using the button combinations on the phone. I have also done a factory format using the service code. All to no avail.
Thanks for the input.. believe me, if I could have avoided the time and hassle of reading about odin I would have. Odin was a last resort.
I dont know if this is helpful or not but after I format the internal sd.
Total Space: 13.18 GB
Free Space 12.31 GB
I am really beginning to think that the internal SD is broken/corrupted or something. As I said in the OP when I boot into recovery, it says it cannot find sdcard/update.zip. Furthermore, if I mount the usb as mass storage, and go into the folders and delete pictures/whatnot. Even if I unplug the phone from the computer, its as if I never did anything. The pictures will all still be there as if nothing happened. If I go in and manage apps, and remove them all one by one, then reboot the phone all the apps are there. These are all reasons why I think the internal storage is messed up.
I was/am quite confused. This is why I requested ideas from people smarter than me.. i.e you guys . Thanks for all the input this far, my OP was a little lacking I suppose.
Did you ever get problem resolved?

I had the same problem with u. Can't delete few old files that stored in the internal SD. Also, I can't use update.zip in the recovery mode. It says "cannot find sdcard/update.zip.
My phone also can't play MP3 file or 3GP file that transfered from other phone / PC.
Anyone can help us ?
How are you deleting the files?
What are you running?
the update.zip, are you guys talking about rooting, or clockwork recovery?
Sorry, thanksgiving was preventing me from following the thread. The problem is still unresolved. I was trying the update.zip in recovery mode, as far as I know there is no clockwork on the phone. I thought the update.zip was just a recovery image that the phone used as a basis for restoring the phone.

I have tried deleting files a few different ways.
Odin, directly via pc with usb mount, and using the software on the phone itself, and tried using factory formats/resets hard and soft.
What do you mean by what am I running?
i just buy a used vibrant. There are some photos & files in the internal memory. I can erase it with file manager, but when I restart the phone, those photos & files appear again.
Same thing with with the gmail account. This gmail account is sign up by previous user. I can't remove this account.
I already try using "factory reset", but it's useless. Those photos & gmail account still in my phone.
I'm running in 2.1 T959UVJI2
about the update.zip, I'm using for rooting. I can't root the phone too. I'm using the file "SGH-959 Root Update.zip" then rename it to "update.zip"
I put this update.zip that the root folder of my internal SD. Bad thing is, this file is gone when I restart my phone (turn off then turn on). So, when I goes to recovery mode, it always said : cannot find sd card/update.zip
anybody can help me ? pleaseeee. So frustated >.<
Yeah that sounds pretty much exactly like my problems.
Perhaps people are having a hard time helping because we cant determine what you are trying to do....
first, yes, there is a clockwork recovery... download rom manager from the market.
there are going to be folders on the internal memory you can not remove because the OS puts them there.
could you please say exactly what you want to do???
I am just trying to delete everything and basically restore the phone back to factory. But it seems like the normal ways of doing that are not working.
Use ODIN to go to stock ji6 or jk2. I have a guide in my signature
Once you reboot mount the internal memory and format it. Settings > sd card and phone storage

ok ok.... I'll try at weekend. I'm out of town in few days. Thx for the info.
please report back, want to make sure all is well

Noob that read the Bible and is kinda lost still

Okay, so after seeing how most people have flashed their phones, I'm tempted to do this sooner rather than later.
So my phone being rooted/unlocked now.
The next step is to back up, I have Titanium Pro, am to only backup apps with it?
Is that considered a sufficient back up of the phone?
I'm running Eclair 2.1update1 - T959UVJI6
I keep reading about Odin, etc so this is throwing me for a loop as to how to do this.
Then I just download a ROM that I like, load it on my microSD and flash through there, (volume button, power button, pressing, etc)?
Thanks, appreciate any help.
You can back up everything with titanium pro. But most people use it to.restore 3rd party apps or to uninstall or freeze apps. Also make sure you have rom manager installed and flash clockwork recovery. Put your rom of choice on your internal sd card not your external micro sd card.

Odin is mostly used when you mess up your phone and it wont work. Search around and read up and download odin and the correct files and have it on hand for.when you bork up your phone.

Do NOT backup red text apps their system apps and will give you a headache later.
Download rom manager and click first option and flash clockwork.
Then press install rom from SD card
It will boot into recovery if its green text recovery press reinstall packages then it'll reboot and go there again click reinstall packages again.
Now its set.
Go to install zip from SD card.
Then again
And find ur rom.
Press install.
Wait till its done.

Its fine to back the red ones up. Just make sure after you flash a new rom that you don't restore any of the red ones. That's when you run into issues.

You have to download some files on your PC for Odin so u can go to a safe rom that wont brick on ya
Yea after you download odin you will need 2 different files. Ones a tar file and the other is a pit file. You only use these via odin. Just be patient when your waiting for it to boot up after flashing. Especially if you flashed a rom that has a voodoo kernel. It will take a good 10-15 minutes to convert. Just let it be.

I was thinking Team Whiskey or Axura, still on the fence with either of these two.
But 10-15 minutes??
I took my SC card out and popped it into my PC, no files other than my music and pictures.
I then renamed the location from TitaniumBackup to external_sd/titaniumbackup, restarted the phone, opened TB to do a batch backup and there were no files listed. I renamed the default save location back to TitaniumBackup and the files were there.
Confusing.
How do I set the batch backups to save to my external SD card?
Or what am I doing wrong?
Im kind of confused as to what you are trying to do. Why would you want to save your titanium backups to your external sd card? There is really no reason to.

Question About Installing UnNamed ROM

So I am getting ready to install this ROM, or at least try to. Question I have is when it says to " 1) Download update-unnamed-v1.X.X-full.zip and place it on your SD card", what does that mean exactly? Do I need to download it onto my computer and move it to my phone? Or do I download it right onto the phone?
Also, do I need an external SD card installed into the phone or can I just save the zip onto the internal memory?
Sorry for the newbie questions but I am very new to this. You guys were very helpful when I rooted the phone so I figured you would be the ones to ask again this time. Thanks in advance for your help.
Doesn't matter how you download it and it can go on either SD card, internal or external.

when you wipe, you will lose everything on your phone. So make sure your contacts are backed up. If you have them in gmail, then you wont lose them because after flashing the new rom and once you setup your gmail account, your contacts will come back automatically.
Yup, best for every Android user to import all of their contacts into their Google/Gmail account. I manually entered mine into Gmail when I first got an Android phone. It sucked, but since then I haven't had to worry about it. As soon as I flash a ROM and sign in to my Google account my contacts just pop in like magic.

yep. I spent the hour or whatever to manually enter all my contacts. It can take a while depending on how many contacts you have, but it will save you a LOT of time and headaches later on.

Do you currently have CWM installed? If so, you can do a full nandroid backup from recovery of your stock rom if you choose to go back to stock. If not, Entropy has a great thread in the dev section about loading back to stock.
UnNamed will simply become the one and only rom on your phone (which isn't a bad thing) after you flash it, the stock will always get replaced.
As to your paid apps via the Market, they'll be there for you to download again for free. TB is another good option, just make sure that you ONLY choose 'Missing Apps with Data' for any restoring.

Whenever you choose 'Wipe data', all folders on /sdcard (clockworkmod, titaniumbackup, download, etc.) remain there and untouched. Formatting the /sdcard is another story.
Your answer was correct since the storage area where the contact info is stored will in fact get wiped but it kind of makes it sound as though you will lose everything, which is not the case.

If you don't backup the stock rom you will loose it.
To back up the stock rom which you are using now is easy.
Go into CWM Recovery and select "backup/restore"
then select "backup".
OR if you are not sure about CWM recovery you can always do it the easier way.
Download this app called "CWM Manager" which is available here: http://megaupload.com/?d=TGXMLL1G
This this app is better than a swiss army knife!
This app is so easy to use that even my brother "Mikey" can do it!
The reason it's so easy to use is because it's self-explanitory.
OK, I do have the cwm from when I rooted, so I should be good there.
Last question, and BTW you have all been super helpful with this. When you say SD card, you are talking about my phones internal memory right and not a little micro SD card that needs to be installed, correct?

When ever you see "sdcard" mentioned in any of these posts or replies
people are referring to the internal sdcard unless they specify "external sdcard"
I also found it strange and a little confusing at first but for a different reason,
the reason being is that we really don't have an externel sdcard at all except
for the one which is inside of our phone.
(they are both internal sdcards since both of them reside inside of our phones!)

Yeah. I always refer to the external sd as just that, external or ext.
Long press volume key to skip songs mod
Hi GTG, is there any way you can implement Aerobahn's mod to skip songs from any app like google music, pandora or any other music app to skip songs with the volume keys?
I found a treath for a SGS2 international version that allows this. Any other sugestions. It would be really convinient when playing music via a bluetooth headset. I promess I'll make a donation.
Is it hard to learn the coding the implement this mod to your ROM?
Here is the link for this mod. I also pasted a file that has the code for this mode that works on international SGS2.

Alright, I did all the steps and I am pretty sure it worked bc my AOS dropped considerably. However, when I do the pulldown menu there are still only the five options. And when I hold down the power key there are only the three original options that I had in the stock rom. Did I mess something up? The only thing that was a little different from the instructions was when I chose the zip to install it was called "updated" in my menu instead of "update-unnamed-v1.X.X-full.zip" like it says in the instructions.

Sounds like you flashed the wrong file. What does it show for Build Number under 'About Phone' in settings? It should show UnNamed v1.0.4.
Also, you need to swipe the Notification options to the left to see the additional 5 but if you did indeed flash the wrong file, you obviously won't see that.

Sounds like they selected 'apply /sdcard/update.zip' instead of navigating to the proper directory and selecting the actual downloaded file, or 'apply update from sdcard' in the root CWM menu option.

It does not say that in the build.
Is the full rom inside of another directory folder? I must have just loaded the wrong file, ugh.

Just go download this "update-unnamed-v1.0.4-full.zip": http://www.multiupload.com/9UTPJDVDZQ
After its downloaded put it on your SDCARD (not inside any folders).
Go into CWM recovery and select "install zip from sdcard" then simply
select the "update-unnamed-v1.0.4-full.zip" in your sdcard and flash.
This way everything will be GOOOOD
unnamed rom is probably the most stable rom out thr.

Can no longer mount as USB storage

I just plugged in my tab 10.1 into my PC to copy a new ROM over, windows detects my device, drivers are installed successfully, all is good to go. However the device does not show up in my computer. I tried disabling /enabling USB Debugging but it makes no difference.
I am running on AOKP rom so is that the reason why my device isnt mounting properly? I remembered it was working fine before. The strange thing is when i put it into download mode and plug it into odin it does not recognise anything there either. I cant even copy anything in or out of the tablet!
My reason for doing all this is to revert back to a stock Honeycomb 3.2 ROM as ive had enough of experimenting with ICS. What should I do now?
Did you make a Nandroid backup of your last HC setup? If you did just restore that.
Also you can try one of those wifi transfer apps like "Wifi File Transfer Pro". I use it all of the time to transfer files, movies and roms. Works like a charm every time.
The only time I use the cord is to charge my tab.

Go to Settings / Storage and there will be three dots on the top. Click on those and re-enable USB connection.
Its alright, managed to install the "proper" drivers by booting into download mode via the recovery. Somehow windows missed it out during the first time i plugged it in. :/ All is working fine now
transfer problems
