Das Bamf: Why does WiFi Tether no longer work? What does? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had Google's WiFi tether (2.0.8 - I think) working quite well on my stock, rooted T-Bolt.
I decided to take the plunge and update to Das Bamf v1.6 Remix and after doing so, it appears to have broken my Wifi Tether. I have tried every version I can, and nothing seems to work. My WiFi devices will drop the connection within a minute or so, sometimes as quickly as 30-45 seconds after starting it on the phone.
Why? What can I do to fix this?
Thanks, any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
-Rob

What do you mean by Google's WiFi tether? You mean the HTC one? Or the market one? Also what kernel comes with bamf?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App

By "Google" I meant the project on Google Code, as found here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
I am not using the app included in the stock rom, because:
1. It will incur an additional monthly fee
2. I have heard it only supports 3G speeds when doing so
I am just trying to understand what from Das Bamf "broke" this, because it was working great on the stock ROM.
-Rob

Well I'm inclined to think the kernel included in your Rom has something to do with it. Try a new kernel see if that helps. Also the mobile hotspot included is free at least until the 15th and I think they extended it, and also works with 4g. In my experience ( incredible then tbolt) the mobile hotspot one works better

I'm inclined to think both of you are wrong. It works fine here, and always has.

I suspect it will be free until after tiered data pricing kicks in. That allows Verizon to avoid grandfathering unlimited tether data (adding tether will be a contract change, so they can force tiers).

That WiFi tether app always did that to me on the inc and even my bolt once. Seemed like it liked some kernels better than others cause I tried a ton of them and it wasn't that consistent across. Dunno man just trying to help the guy. That's why I use the hotspot one while its free

Oh I hear ya. The app is flaky, and folks are inclined to blame everything but the app on the problem.
Its certainly not the rom, and if it connects, its not the kernel either.
I'm using it right now, 2.0.8, without issue. Disconnecting every 35-45 seconds sounds suspiciously like someone doesn't have stay awake turned on in development settings.

Thanks for the responses, I appreciate the info.
When you say "stay awake" in developer... where? In the Wifi tether app, or somewhere else in the settings for the ROM? I looked in the app and can't find that.
Thanks, please advise.

For those of you who happen to be Running Das Bamf, does WiFi Tether work for you? If so, what version?
I will say it again, I love Das Bamf, but the WiFi tether worked FLAWLESSLY for me in the Stock Rom, and after switching to Das Bamf, it doesn't. Given the fact that was the only change I made, I can't see how it isn't an issue specific to Das Bamf, but I would love to be proven wrong so I can fix it and keep Das Bamf.
Thanks!

I've been running wifi tether for quite some time with no issues, aside from the standard flakiness that comes standard with the app. 3.0 pre14 is really flaky, but 2.0.8 seems to be working fine for me.
This was true of the stock ROM with root, the 4 minutes I wasted on VirusROM, and BAMF 1.4+.
@adrynalyne - Fantastic ROM by the way.

Thank you

First off, I am not "calling you out" and I want you to know I appreciate your hard work. I really do like your ROM.
I don't know what to tell you to look for, honestly. I just know on the stock ROM I was running 2.0.8 using WPA2 and it would work great.
I did a FULL wipe before installing Das Bamf v1.6 Remix, and ever since, no version of WiFi tether seems to maintain a connection for more than 30-45 seconds, and I confirmed the screen does not dim/sleep.

Is Verizon blocking installs of tethering apps on 2.3?

A handful of my co-workers on various Verizon Android phones were saying that Gingerbread updates stop tethering apps from working, even if rooted and side-loaded.
I would like to try CM7 since it just released, but I can't lose my tethering! Am I worrying about nothing?
I'm using WiFi tether on CM7 and it works fine. You shouldn't have to worry since CM7 is not built by Verizon or anything, so they can't block tethering apps in the OS.

They are blocking tethering on stock roms, so if you are running CM7/MIUI etc you will be fine.
You may have to sideload. Verizon asked Google to hide certain apps, like PDAnet, from the market. This violates their net neutrality agreement, and they are being sued over it. Verizon stock updates are also set to tattle on you if you tether. If running touchwiz, I believe you need a modified kernel with dummy tether.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
For devices the Verizon is giving an official Gingerbread build, they are slipping in ways to disable Wireless Tether. It's also hidden in the market, but it's easy to find an APK to install yourself. However, if you're running Gingerbread on the fascinate, you're doing it on a custom ROM, which doesn't have that nasty bit of Verizon code.

I am 99% certain I know the answer to this, but I just want to be 100% sure;
I am running SuperClean 3 Milestone 1, TW Launcher, and KGB Kernel with Voodoo enabled on my Fascinate. I just installed http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk, but haven't tried it yet. Is Verizon going to know if I am tethering with this configuration?
Thanks!
I think it honestly depends.
If you are using it to seach the web and do basic surfing than i dont think it matters to them.
If you start streaming Netflicks at HD quality or Bit Torrents [heavy bandwidth], they might suspect something.
I have used both the wifi tether and barnacle on ICS and GB for quick and dirty usage and i have never had VZW say a thing to me.
That is just my personal experience.
My $0.02:
I am running SC3 Milestone 2 and the KGB FA16 Kernel and have had no trouble tethering with my tablet or laptop using wifi tether 3.1 Beta 6.
You can pick your Beta flavor for the app using the link CCampos provided.
I have not tethered. Though I want to. (Hotspot feature) don't want Verizon to suspect something and then charge me.
Can't they charge me if they find out?
If I'm running CM7, will they still know?

My (very limited) understanding as of right now is that a custom ROM alone is not enough to keep Verizon in the dark. A think you need a custom kernel as well to be safe, and never use the Verizon hot spot app. Am I right?

Maybe Verizon can't block you from tethering with this app, but can they monitor if you are? And then hit you with a charge later, or drop you from service?

Just throwing this out there: I've never seen any *confirmed* reports of Verizon retroactively charging customers for "illegal" tethering, or ending your service/contract. Not sure why people get so worried about getting caught, it's not like the phone police are gonna come take you to jail.
If I'm wrong on this and Verizon is in fact charging those who tether (who don't pay Verizon's tethering charge) or terminating their contracts, I'd love to see evidence to the contrary.
I ran up 18 gb last month. From Xbox live and other teathering because its my only access. Never have issues.

Its honestly about how much data you end up using, if you go crazy and start using 50gb then they will want to switch you.
They give warnings before they do anything and they are starting to throttle people after a certain point.
You can try this for USB Tethering - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424676
He claims to found a way to hide it but they still know how much data you use.
Basically, don't use a desktop browser. It's one of the #1 ways to get the tether police on your ass. People are getting nastygrams after only using the "desktop useragent" feature of Dolphin HD 2-3 times.
Otherwise, native tethering (remove TetheringManager2.apk if on a stock ROM) works best. Only one that isn't adhoc.
OK. So I was in iHell for a few years and got pretty good with the file system/ jailbreaking. So I've since been paroled (from Jail-breaking :l ) and PRESTO!!! Im a noob again.
Im still debating on flashing but im gonna root for sure. I need to check my facts here. I can root via any mentioned method. I'll need to install titanium (?) to freeze that network check to use the native hotspots. (The name of that file escapes me but I can search it up later)
Anything else for now? Is busybox worth it?
On a semi-related note, I've not had multiple ROMs available to me. What's the benifit to other Roms? I mean what does CM have that stock doesn't? Is there a break down or spread sheet to compare capabilities?
This may sound goofy, but I can already do everything that I wanted my old iPhone to do on stock, but if flashing will bring more, cooler, and
as yet unimagined toys to my newly Android enriched life, I'm all about flashing. What say you XDA?
Sorry for the long post. Caffeine makes me type a lot.

Well follow the guide inn general about how to flash custom binaries, it'll help. Also, most rooms take care of the tetheringmanager2.apk sup you don't need to do anything else, it works out of the box. Make sure to use a mobile user agent while browsing, and you should be fine.
As a starting point, I suggest unnamed or icscrewed (both roms I've personally tried and that both are great)
The most common side effect of having a custom ROM is the desire to show it off, awesome battery life, good support and limitless customization. Just read before you do anything and you'll be golden.

Reflash cm7 requires SBF

I have been having amazingly annoying wireless issues with cm7 on my dx2, to the point that I'm cutting into my data plan most times without me even knowing it. I want to flash cm7 again, but do I absolutely have to Sbf first, or at all?
I have a nandroid backup of my stock 2.3.4 pre cm7,can I just restore that and flash cm7 over it? If so should I do that knowing I have issues with cm7 from that? I didn't clear the big3 prior to flashing cm7 the first time but did per the steps in the beta thread, as will as a few times since.
So should I sbf, or restore and flash again?
Sent from my MB870 using XDA App
If you are having problems you should definitely sbf and wipe data. Start over fresh to make sure no fragments of previous mods are lingering around.
However, the wifi issue seems to be a problem in cm7 for some. I had it and installed wifi helper. It didn't fix the problem just reconnected wifi when it would drop. I assume that's what you mean by wireless issues. If so, you might try wifi fixer before sbf and wipe.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Thanks for that, many people have posted saying that didn't fix the wifi related issues, but I will indeed give wifi fixer a go first before sbf...
Sent from my MB870 using XDA App
I have had similar issues with Wifi and radio/data connectivity. I believe that there are some further tweaks that need to be made but as I understand Dragonzkiller is not making any more adjustments to this ROM but rather focusing on CM9
However, I have found that booting into CWR and wiping cache and Dalvik Cache has improved things. The wifi issues will be ongoing but for me I rather live with that than stock.
I've been using an app that seems to work well as far as keeping wifi on. Before, I did change settings to having it never sleep. It did fix it. Maybe once or twice I noticed it shut off. But a lot less than before I made the changes. But anyway, I am using this app called llama-location profiles. It pretty much changes the state of your device based on location and other triggers. For instance, I have it set to turn wifi on when I get home and to leave it on as long as its connected to MY wifi or leave the area then it will turn wifi off. Since using this, I have not once had a problem with my wifi turning off. The app does a lot more than just that too so I recommend it regardless.

What's the resource usage inn that app? Strangely enough I gave up after wifi fixer as well as multiple sbf and flash didn't resolve. i flashed liberty instead, and zero Wifi problems. So not the device, not the environment, all that's left is configuration and software. I'm fairly certain I had it configured right, the no sleep policy didn't add much stability, appeared to just ignore it. Bah! I want to run cm7! :[

To get to Liberty or cm7 did you end up doing a fresh sbf to a clean stock 2.3.4?
If you did and then if you didn't add any additional apps for a bit, do you still see the wifi issue on a clean cm7?
I would think this should help you learn if a software program is causing the wifi to hiccup.

This is the one I was excited about when I first learned about it weeks ago, but it does nothing on my pc....I click ok or start or whatever it is and nothing works........
Yeah that new kush wired tether is garbage just like pdanet and klink. You have to install stuff on every pc you wanna use it on. Ohhhhh wired tether in the description through me off. I suggest scrapping liquid 3.2. It has a couple bugs that they aren't concerned with and has been totally abandoned. Open Garden is the best WiFi tether out there. Try channel 5 and 6 with ThunderShed 1.5. Never had a problem. Was using it today. I recommend wired-tether 1.4 from code.google. So much faster than WiFi. And I loved liquid 3.2 but too many bugs with tethering and a few other must haves.
Good luck.
