I'd like to think I'm pretty handy with this, having done it once or twice myself.
But..
In trying to install honey rom for vibrant, it did a full wipe of the phone, internal sd and external as well, and I lost ALL the music, photos, videos, and Backups.
I tried to reboot into honey rom, only to find that the phone can only get to the boot screen. I've already let it sit for hours, it does not load up.
I can go into recovery, but there are no backups to recover, no new roms to set up, and no way of getting into the phone to mount to my computer.
In my recovery, there's an option to mount the phone: I mount and the computer sees it but won't let me in; I can also boot into download mode.
That's great, koreanjhee, you can just odin in!
I've stock odined before so it's not like I can't use that method, except for the fact that in download mode, odin DOES NOT recognize my phone. Only in download mode does it not read.
On my computer, it flat-out doesn't recognize, and on another, serial usb (er something) won't recognize.
Scoured the forums, find some info. I haven't tried samsung pc studio yet, will someone post the links up for me please? And anyone with advice to saved my (bricked? ) phone?
P.S. I've already tried re-installing the samsung usb drivers.
Can you use adb?
Oh wow. adb on sdk? I forgot all about that.
Researching now.

On the vibrant will the adb work in stock recovery?
I think my phone is considered bricked/ soft bricked or whatever its classified as.
If I go into odin it is not recognized by my pc, however if I go into the stock recovery (it cant find the Clockwork recovery file "update" anymore). I really have no idea how to use adb and dont really feel like struggling to find out it wont even connect.
is your phone in download mode when using ODIN?
Yes, I can put it in download mode. However it wont be noticed by odin for some reason. I plan on trying on another computer sooner or later.
I tired the oneclick lag fix via pc and it did find the phone, but what it didnt do is push the file onto the internal sd card.
Next question. Can I change the internal to the external sd card for recovery?
Hello all.
I have uninstalled and re-installed Samsung drivers (new drivers from 7/5/11 on Samsung site). My son wiped the SD cad by mistake also making this more difficult. I have nothing on my SD card. No roms, etc...
The eror I get in Windows XP is "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognbize it."
I tried to manually install drivers and no luck. Am I done?? Phone bricked 4ever??

Are you sure you are putting your phone in download mode (Three fingers, volume up/down and power button) if so I would recommend a different USB port or, if you have access, a different computer. You can install ROMS on your SD card with a different phone, if you have one (plug into computer and then install to the root of an SD card.)
Why exactly do you need ODIN?
Thanks for the reply.
I need ODIN because I am stuck on bootloop and need to go back to stock or to the GB ComRom 0.2.
Right now I have nothing on my SD card to flash and my computer in all USB ports does not recognize the phone.
I am trying to put roms/etc on an SD Adapter and then flash from the phone?
I hope this works..

Well, to start THAT'S NOT HOW YOU GET INTO DOWNLOAD MODE!
That's the "3 finger salute" which is good for going into recovery.
To Get into Download Mode, turn your phone off (completely off, unplug battery if it makes you feel better). Disconnect the USB cable. Press-and-hold the down-volume button while you are plugging in the USB cable.
Did the Yellow Caution sign come up? Good. You are now in DOWNLOAD mode.
also, if you are this new to things NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER PRESS THE PHONE BUTTON. (only use the PDA button while flashing roms on our fascinate).
*edit* You might want to try out something less likely to eat your phone and SD card. Since you are new to all of this, the CommRom0.2 is not for new people. I mean you no offense, but the leak that that is based on is known to destry SD cards, and it could do other stuff that we don't know about yet. ...Meanwhile, I've been using jt's CM7 for a week now and love it, but if I were you, I would go install the old(er) Froyo-based Community Rom Kangbang2.0
It has great installation instructions and isn't likely to destroy your phone.
Here's a link for you. Get your feet wet here, learn how to do backups and restorations...that's what I did and it helped a lot.

Thanks for the responses.
This seems to be the perfect storm to brick the phone.
Nothing on SD card. NO Computer (tried 3) recognizes the phone in ODIN or HEIMDALL even after new driver installs. I am doing this to either go to stock of froo builds
I did buy an SD adapter and loaded it with froyo roms but the ine thing I do have CWR 3.0 won't flash because froyo roms are edify and are not compatible.
I tried loading a new CWR and it won't let me either?
Yes, I am in download mode at all times on the phone ( the yellow triangle with the droid w/shovel)
I really think I am beyond repair...

you're not beyond repair especially if you can get into download mode and you can get cwr to load.
that being said try installing nexus s drivers...some people have had to do this, for their pc to recognize there device, if that doesn't help there are cwr files that are in zip form..if you grab one of those you should be able to flash the zip version of cwr with your current recovery to get you a recovery that supports edify scripting.
Also have you tried hooking up to odin even though the pc didn't see your phone...I'm on cm7 and my phone didn't recognize my phone but when I went into download mode and hooked up to odin it flashed everything I wanted just fine!?!...worth a shot if you haven't tried it yet

What about your USB cable? LG cables don't work. Make sure the USB cable is the stock or one that definitely works. I have been unable to get ODIN to recognize the phone before, but it was always because I grabbed the wrong cable.
Sounds like a bad usb cable. You can get the official Samsung cable from amazon for about $2-3 with prime shipping.
Give that a shot.

When transferring files from phone to laptop usb cord got pulled by my baby son and after that phone could not access, recognize internal sd card. I was running latest Miui but tried to Odin back to stock but when try to power up I get stuck on splash screen. As of right now I can get into download mode and I can get into stock recovery. laptop though doesnt recognize internal or external sd card. What to do.
Couple things. Download the NOOB_in_N33D's guide and reinstall the Samsung drivers. Then try to re-Odin back to stock again. Those drivers a tricky little Ba$7ards. I've had to reinstall them many times.
Second, and this part might suck for you but when he pulled out the USB, he might have tweaked your USB port. My youngest boy did this to one of my old laptops doing the exact same thing. This might be why your PC won't recognize your internal/external drives.

I am able to Odin back to stock but when i turn on phone I get stuck on Vibrant screen splash. I have reinstalled the drivers but i believe because my internal card is not being recognized that might be causing all of the issues.
Ok, so this was my first attempt at trying to root and flash a device, and somewhere along the way, I screwed up. I installed TWRP on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi only tablet (GT-P7510 32GB) via Odin, and rooted the device with the SuperUser and everything was gravy. Then, I tried to flash CM onto the device, and something went wrong. Bad install file or something along those lines.
OK, I'll just wipe it off and try again, went into TWRP "Wipe", and did all of the wipes. Which is where I went wrong. I did ALL of the wipes. So now the only thing still on the tablet is TWRP. Luckily I can still boot into that, but that's it.
So, this is where the real problem comes in. I need to be able to load the ZIP onto the device root so I can use TWRP to install it, but for the life of me I cannot get my Windows 7 Laptop to recognize the device. I have installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled the Samsung drivers at least 4 times, being extra patient to reset both the computer and tablet after each attempt, i've tried turning the computer on with it already plugged in, i've tried waiting to plug it in until after the computer is fully booted, everything.
The USB port on the computer recognizes other USB flash drives just fine, i'm using the OEM cable, and everything worked fine to connect the tablet with Odin before I did that wipe, so we can rule out the cable being bad.
I've been reading a lot of forum posts both on XDA and elsewhere and I've seen people talking about needing to uncheck the USB debugging in Settings, but obviously I can't get there, because there's no OS. This must have been unchecked before the wipe though, because it connected fine then.
Help
Interesting addendum.
I actually CAN access the device with Odin. It will allow me to reflash the TWRP .tar file onto the device. Not sure if that's helpful at all though.
Figured it out, questions answered
I tried flashing CWM recovery onto my AT&T Galaxy S4 and because my phone does not connect to my computer via USB for some reason (the phone charges and my computer recognizes that there's a device in, but I cannot actually do anything with it) I flashed it with Flashify. I rebooted into recovery mode, and I got slapped with the "Unauthorized software has been detected on your phone!" message. So I tried rebooting, and I got stuck in a recovery mode bootloop with the same message. Eventually, I realized if I just go into download mode and reboot by pressing the volume down key, it doesn't try to go into recovery mode. I have already endlessly researched my USB problem, and yes, I DO have USB debugging on. ODIN recognizes that I have an external device in as well, but I haven't tried flashing anything onto my phone with it because I don't want to brick my phone because the connection to my PC is faulty. I'm using the charger that came with the device as my USB drive, so that's not faulty either. I know rooting my phone did this, and I'm pretty sure it's because I missed a step. I used this tutorial to root my phone:
[droid views dot com] /root-att-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337-android-4-4-4-kitkat-firmware-i337ucufnj4/ (I'm not allowed to post links yet, so fix the URL if you're gonna have a look)
When I flashed the I337_NC1_Stock_Kernel, my phone refused to go into download mode and I couldn't flash the I337_NJ4_Stock_Kernel as a result. I'm pretty sure that's what caused it, but I have no idea how to fix it. I'm not an expert with my phone and, despite almost soft-bricking my phone via a corrupt CWM .zip, I'm not a newbie at this either. If I could figure out how to fix this problem, I wouldn't have to worry about throwing myself into a bootloop because I can just use ODIN. I was a sitting duck before download mode rescued me, so I'd like some help as to how I can accomplish this. Any and all help is appreciated. I am 100% certain my device is the right version for that tutorial, I wouldn't try to root my phone without checking all of the simple things first.
