Now that rooting is possible, although not a one-click experience - how many of you have rooted, what were the reasons, and what root access apps have you installed?
rooted, mainly for Titanium Backup but at least it's prepped and ready if anything else crops up!
I dont really understand what rooting does.. some one care to explain?
Thanks

It gives you full access to all the information on your phone. It lets you back up apps and data to the SD card, which isn't possible with default security settings.
In essence, it's like getting administrator access to your computer, or "root" in linux, hence the name
Hoping to get mine tomorrow. I won't be rooting yet since there isnt anything released yet worth rooting for. And... I don't suppose I'll need TB just yet since I won't be messing with the phone SINCE nothing worth messing around with is available yet. Also I'll probably wait for a 1 click root or till something worth rooting comes along, whichever happens first.

I'd do the same with any Android device, regardless of manufacturer.

Hi,
I just purchased the i9100 from someone today and I'm pretty sure that it's rooted. I checked the kernal and it is (2.6.35.7-RAGEmod-U1-v1.1b).
Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Also which files would I need? Do I need to use a USB jig?
I have no idea what I'm doing, there is someone on kijiji (local selling/buying site) that says they will flash it back for me for $100, should I just do that?
Thanks everyone!
not sure what you would do, but what i am CERTAIN about is do not pay 100 bucks... just go to the dev section and read up there.. factory reset (turn phone off, hold volume up, power and home keys simultaneously)
Sorry I wasn't being more specific, but what I wanted to do is unroot the phone. When my phone powers on I get a GR check rom boot logo?
My phone seems to be missing a lot of default apps compared to my brothers SGS2.
well theres this program called s-root which can on click unroot your phone. not sure if you need a specific kernel though. ask around in this forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414

Just unrooting the phone should work with SuperOneClick (download to your PC, enable USB debugging on the phone, connect it to the PC and click on the big "unroot" button. If you are running some custom ROM you want to here rid of you will have to flash complete new clean software from Samsung.
But to the missing features: you said you have an older Galaxy S1, oder course there are other (better) apps and a totally new software on the successor, the SGS2.

Yes that's a custom rom, checkrom v5, go to the stock rom thread, pick an upto date rom, ki8 is the newest.
Flash using odin, guide is also in the thread.
That's the only way to remove a custom rom and kernel and restore the removed apps.

You are on a custom rom or a modified stock rom for shure. If you want to get back to stock then you have a thread in the development section that hosts all the stock roms or are links to them at least. Flashing a stock rom will also unroot you phone.
Now as for the flashing part you need to read the stickies search for a youtube video before you do it. You need to understand that flashing has its risks. Although I flashed my phones at least 50 times and never bricked any of them so far you still need to be warned. Its not complicated at all but you need to understand the basic steps. Good luck.

Thanks to the both of you! I will try this now!
Everything worked out! Thanks again everyone!
Return to stock, no PC required!
Safe to return to store, no root left over, 0 flash counter.
Do not do this with low battery!
This is for those that have a broken USB port.
Plug it in if your charger works, or borrow/buy a battery with full charge.
1. Download Mobile Odin Lite (Download) or Pro (Market)
If using Lite then install this APK next - (i777 Base) - (i9100 Base)
2. Download and copy to device - I777UCKH7.tar - 502mb!
Check MD5: 6da05426d720ab7a1d068b81a27a6d86
3. Open Mobile Odin > select Open File... > I777UCKH7.tar
4. Scroll down to FLASH FIRMWARE
It will now reboot, wait a few minutes...

Stock AT&T Gingerbread, we do not have official ICS yet.
Mobile-Odin basically uses all the same files but its already in the .tar so no need to split them up.

Yes you can use KIES for updating, if there ever is one in the phone's lifetime.
This is for the AT&T Galaxy S2 - i777, just making sure you have the same one.
Flashing this on International gs2 i9100 can probably do some horrible things to your phone.

When you open and run mobile Odin it says it never flashes boot loaders. And looking at the screenshots you will not see anything about boot loaders in it either. I have used mobile Odin in the past when flashing i9100 rooms and didn't want the boot loaders. So NO it won't flash boot loaders ever.

This will be my first Samsung phone. Coming from HTC. I know with HTC you can unlock the bootloader and them flash custom roms without having to root. Can this be done (yet) with the Samsung S3? Or is rooting the simplest way to flash roms when they come available? Until a few good ones come out I may keep my new shinny S3 unrooted.

Mine just came back from repair ("sudden death syndrome") with a new mainboard and totally stock firmware, showing this red thingy, so it's got nothing to do with being rooted. I'd say it's a 'feature' of newer boards.

This could be great info in order to make everybody calm (I mean if I have this then I will never experience the sudden death syndrome, because of newer motherboard).
But, on the other hand, the above mentioned thread has ways to remove it and mentioning that this is due to rooting (flash counter >=1 creates this sign)

Nope; rooted and running Wanam's J5. But since the entire motherboard was replaced, what could possibly remain in the phone to indicate that it had been rooted? The phone's essentially just a mainboard, battery and screen.

I was reading this other thread and people faced this issue after the bootloader got updated (through OTA updates).
It seems that they flashe the old bootloader and the red line is gone!!
So, it looks pretty much like an OTA update issue (JB mostly)

not true. TA works if you follow the instructions
Yep is because of the new Bootloader. I updated it on purpose a few weeks ago, flashed a stock firmware and recovery, rerooted the phone and installed a new recovery...this exclamation mark came up...nothing to worry about..
There is one way to solve that issue
It works for me every time
The red ! appeared if you used custom rom or kernel or recovery
So what you have to do is that flash only stock firmware, kernel and recovery
Then use triangle away to reset counter
After resetting flash counters with TA, the red ! will never appear as long as you use stock firmware, kernel and recovery

I have rooted before on an android with expired warranty so I know how to root. I was just wondering how unsafe it is for your warranty.
Odp: How dangerous is it to root an android.
I rooted my l9 soft bricking it 6 times during the procces i put CWM and non branded software. It worked OK but GPS broke
I needed to make it stock for the waranty repairs so i run LG soft for firmware update and chose emergency software recovery.
After some time i had pure stock l9 ready to ship for service center.
Right now i have rooted l9 (again) with working GPS
So unless you unlock bootloader you can revert to stock and have warranty.

have you rooted and dabbled into Android before? i say this because p769 was the most annoying and troublesome roots i've ever done. if you haven't messed with any Androids yet, i would HIGHLY suggest you just leave it alone until someone comes up with an easier way to do it.
Yeah when I rooted my first Android it was with z4root so I'll just be patient and wait.

You are right, it may be hard to some pals, who have no experience in kdz flashing. But everyone here can do it and are on rooted JB with CWM Touch.
If yan can do you can do too. Try again. yan = anyone
the new method looks hard with all the steps but really its pretty simple once you do it once.

Not that dangerous with some phones as the bootloader is locked like my L9 and preferably i like it cause you cant brick it but theres always risks in rooting nothing is ever perfect and nothing can be perfect

I should have phrased that better. I'm meant more along the lines of,if my phone fails to boot. Is it still possible to remove any evidence of the root or am I ****ed?

Root = giving yourself administrative permissions. Similar to user control or run as admin, administrator access on windows.. except the programs are missing. You just add them, and control what's allowed or not. If you need to reverse, just remove the programs.. Simple.
If you give yourself permission to delete your files or edit the registry. If you don't know what you're doing you may render your OS unbootble or unusable.. same on rooted android..
More dangerous than Steve Irwin swimming with stingrays.... oh... wait...
Seriously tho, it's only as dangerous as your ability to follow instructions.
