[Q] Atrix running much hotter after 1.8.3 update - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, so I had 1.5.7, rooted and sideload enabled.
Backup via TB.
Apply OTA update as it downloaded as soon as I hit my wifi (would swear I had said Cancel - but apparently not - so figured let's go for it).
Applied Gingerbreak- it hung (I think because I did not reboot after the 1.8.3 update came up clean (i.e. it rebooted once, everything started - and I ran Gingerbreak - I think you should reboot after the update and before Gingerbreak).
Rebooted.
Applied Gingerbreak.
All fine (other than loss of internal SD contents as 'expected').
Phone was warmer than usual off the charger.
Been in the same case as usual all morning, and battery is at 46c - usually howers around 35/36c.
Really can't see this being coincidence - anyone seeing the same ?

No problems here. Maybe you have a runaway app? http://goo.gl/uXLNU

I havent looked at temperatures so I cant compare exact numbers, but I have noticed mine runs a smidge hotter than before. Seems to be concentrated at the bottom of the phone. Its not warm enough to make me concerned, though. Battery life is slightly better than before the update so I dont really care about it.

Interesting, same location as mine - at bottom of the back (i.e. not where the battery is).
Runaway app. would be a good thought - but if that's the case it is somehow electrically efficient, but not thermally - i.e. battery life is running about right for todays' light use ... And I know this doesn't really make sense - as the heat is clearly generated electrically - can't really figure this.
46c is definitely on the high end for the battery, I'll find out how to get the CPU temp out of it - I assume that must be what is down under the SIM and microSD ...

You have something weird going on. Normal temps are 32/33 idle and 38/40 load.

Same thing. It's running at 43 on the H+. It runs much cooler on wifi, might that have something to do with it? I have the GPS off and am running stock right now.

[Q] Phone Battery Level Discretion

I'm having an issue with my phone battery level detection.
It won't charge past 97%. I noticed it lately within the last few days, i would charge my phone, but when i would grab my phone for the day and take it off the charger, it instantly dropped down to as low as 95%. But, when i plug in the AC cable, it says 100% charged.
Anyone have any info about this? Also, i powered the phone down and charged it fully with the AC adapter, and the highest level i got was 97%.
Also, i have seen the phone has a lag issue, gps issue, no word about froyo, and no notification led. Most of those were fine for me, but since i've had the phone, most of the battery has been used for cell stand by even though i've been in areas with excellent reception. And now with this battery level discretion, i'm a little worried about my decision. I only have tomorrow to return the phone and now that idea is gaining more and more weight for me.

1.) I would say exchange your battery (I have never heard on that issue)
2.) There is something called a lag fix.. So search next time..
3.) There is also a GPS fix.. So once, again.. search
Defiantly keep the phone.. Download a ROM called Bionix 1.3 With Lagfix& OC/UV (1.4 will be released tomorrow)
Download a program called SetCPU and OV it to 1.2 (It will make the phone much faster)
Tada, you have what you should of had
download and install rom manager.. install clockworkmod, boot into recovery, wipe battery log..
I know there's a lag fix but why should we need that in the first place? I personally haven't needed a lag fix, but I haven't heard anything from Samsung about fixing it.
Also for the gps, flashing patches is still pretty hit or moss for a lot of people and even then, I've seen a lot of people that have their compassion still messed up. My question is not along the lines of "why isn't Samsung doing more to fix this issue across theory US galaxy s line?"
I mean, I've seen probably 3 official updates to "fix" the gps/compass issue, and the only one I haven't heard about the results is the fascinate. And I haven't heard ANYTHING from T-Mobile about fixing ANY is the issues that the vibrant has, on than "they're working on it".
It's word, if it wast for me reading the new engadget post today polling about people's epic and listing the problems it's facing (which most seem to echo across the galaxy s line) coupled with this battery issue, I wouldn't have second guessed my phone decision. But when o saw this, and my battery, it gave me a bad taste similar to what I faced in the slide community.
I love this phone, don't get me wrong. I'm just worried about Samsung and T-Mobile management calls.

I already have that installed. Would it get rid of my phone rating battery in cell standby or fix the part where I only can charge to 98%?
I'm going to try charging from a computer use to see if it's a charger problem or phone problem.
Edit: I am running JAC's kernel for the past 2 days, I wonder if that has anything to do with the charging discrepancy? Also, I'm not running it overclocked.

If you have such a problem with it then just take it back & quit whining.
All we are trying to do here is make the phone better, Your right you SHOULDNT need a lag fix in the first place.. but apparently YOU do
Like I said about the not charging all the way thing, just take it to your tmobile store & get a new battery.. Not to mention that they actually did say that froyo would be released after G2 witch is going to be sometime next month I beleive
I haven't seen the need for a lag fix myself and sorry is this entire thread sound like a rant/whine-fest. I do love what's been done for the phone in the face of it's adversity. And for the most part, I am pretty optimistic about Samsung/T-Mobile fixing the issues this has. I more just writing it all down at once to get it out if my system.

i see that. i also see that tmobile twittered about an OTA soon and not to flash the JI5. that's really more than i've seen from them about the phone lately, albeit still extremely ambiguous.
Also, i just unplugged my phone from USB computer charging. It charged to 100% but when i unplugged my phone it went back down to 97%. So it's not charger related. I'll be going into tmobile tomorrow and seeing if i can say whether it's the battery or the phone by testing out a different vibrant and charging my battery in there.
Also, i am getting kinda pissed that my phone "appears" to get extremely poor reception. It goes from strong signal to nothing, but still saying tmobile in the same place.

I'm talking about JI6 not JI5...
My vibrant has done the same thing once. I thought it was weird. Hasn't done it since though. I really don't care about one or two ticks on the battery guage. I use battery indicator pro though because the built in battery meter sucks.
i use a flashed version of the battery status reader as well as battery indicator. And it doesn't go up to 100% unless i'm using the charger. but once it's off the charger, it drops to 97%.

I went to my local tmobile store, they swapped batteries. They also told me they couldn't do anything since i was out of the 14 day exchange period. The thing is though, i bought the phone outright, and when you do that you have a 30 day return period.
But they also didn't have any vibrants in stock so i had to go to the nearest corporate store. I got there, and they were puzzled as to why i was having an issue, saying that "it lasts for the stated amount of time, so i'll most likely have to charge you a $10 restocking fee" crap. They ended up doing a 1 time courtesy exchange. I'll see how this vibrant goes. I also checked to make sure it wasn't hardware locked (it go into recovery with the volume keys).
I don't think it's a battery issue, as I've seen it quite often. Mine does this sometimes as well but it doesn't really bother me. Someone posted that there was a fix you could do using ADB from the computer, but it was a month or so ago and I'm too lazy to look for it.

well after swapping my battery for a new one and experiencing the same issue, i know it's not battery related. it's phone related. I want my phone to charge fully, not almost fully.

Screen randomly turns on at night and stays on for hours!

So I got my x10 like 3 weeks ago, and I usually leave it to charge overnight, but the last 2 nights It had sufficient charge left so I kept it besides my bed, the first time it happened I didn't get up on time and was late for work cause my alarm couldn't go off cause my battery was dead! I remember clearly when I went to bed at 12:30 it was at 55 or so percent, and when I woke at 9 it was dead. (My alarm was set at 7:30 so it was dead before that). This was quite surprising to me as otherwise it runs fine throughout the day. The next day i kept it at 80% charge at 1 am and when I woke up at 7:30 it was at 66.so it did drain a lot but not as much. I had installed juiceplotter and according to that, there was some network usage around 2:30 to 3:15 or so (i'm guessing the yellow line indicates data usage?) and one thing I noticed was from 4:30 to 7:30 the SCREEN WAS ON! (Acc to the blue line). So I'm wondering what could be the cause of this rude awakening . I looked into the partial wake status and it showed facebook as the highest since boot. Could it be that? I'm using the latest facebook app. Also is there any app that can monitor the systems activity? Say what started when, for how long, how much cpu, screen on etc so I could determine that if it happens again.
I read about others having this problem. I'm sure what the conclusion to that thread was but for me my screen only comes on when I have a scheduled back up with backup and restore. It comes on and stays on until the back up is complete, unless of course I turn it off manually. I think this is also the case for Titanium Backup but don't quote me on that.
Well it could not be the backup app doing it because I don't have any backups scheduled... I dont have titanium backup installed too...
I have the same problem. Not so much a problem though as I charge the phone @ night anyway. What causes it however, I don't know. I don't have scheduled backups running. Come to think of it.. I only had this problem when I had a live wallpaper set (I think). Since a few days I'm running froyo 2.2 rom/static wallpaper and didn't have this problem so far. So perhaps it's (live)wallpaper related (which I seriously doubt), or ROM related. I was running Nordic ROM 2.1 before.
I've also noticed this. No apps running and randomly the screen comes on. Sorry I can't be of any help but it's not just you...
Well I do have a feeling that it could be the facebook app doing it, can't be certain though. I'm judging by the partial wake usage stats, well It could also be 'Android system' but I don't know what would be waking the phone up from sleep like this and leaving the screen on for hours!
Like I asked earlier, is there any app that can monitor all activity on android?Like apps starting at what time and ending etc, so I could use his in conjunction with juiceplotter to narrow down the culprit?
wow guys, not sure what this is. but i did a google search and heres what turned up.
http://androidforums.com/incredible-support-troubleshooting/141868-screen-randomly-turns.html
http://forum.androidcentral.com/motorola-droid-x/49298-screen-randomly-turns.html ; this ones interesting to say the least
x10 specific:

And I think this program might help you:
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-eolwral-osmonitor-xxxt.aspx
Mentioning what Android (1.6, 2.1) version you have and what model of x10(i,a) might help as well.
Hope that helps. Can anyone with this problem confirm if its just stock or also rooted and flashed devices?
i got no idea when it comes screen randomly turns on. but the facebook app might be the cause (im still guessing). because data traffic consume alot of your battery, considering retreive and send data too much. i have my data traffic turned off in case i want to go bed, and take it easy just turn on when you need to use internet

Well went through those threads earlier, but they didn't seem very helpful.
I'm on android 2.1 btw on an x10i. Well I can safely say that it didn't happen last night so I'll check again tonight to see if it does, if not then its just a random occurrence

[Q] Fully charged E3D dying in sleep mode overnight?...

When I went to bed last night, my E3D had a full charge (need that because my sick mother lives downstairs and might call me). I put the phone in sleep mode. When I woke up this morning, the phone was doornail dead.
So what gives?
I have also noticed that my phone gets VERY hot occasioally.
mine was doing that, did factory reset, great now!
I had the same thing happen to me before, hopefully its a software issue not hardware.
Sent from my E3D using Tapatalk
Some app obviously kept the processor running overtime, download something like OS Monitor or System Panel and watch for irregular activity.
I had this happen 3 times so far, can't figure out what it is.
On my sensation it was HTC watch, try freezing it with titianium backup
Well that's not good. Here's some of my observations:
1) It could be a hardware issue. That's not good. If that worries you as a possible cause, take it in to have it looked at.
2) It could be a software issue - most likely. What apps do you have installed? I have one in particular that streams video from security cameras. When the video feed isn't "paused/stopped," the stream/app will continue even when phone is turned off! So that kills my battery.
3) You could have something polling the inet. Maybe twitter, facebook, etc., email, exchange etc. Check out the sync settings and make sure they're reasonable.
4) Finally, reboot the phone before you go to bed and leave it alone. That way you can make sure it's nothing you initiated after reboot.
If the phone is warm, that means it's doing something (either with battery or wireless something).
I had the same problem for a minute but got it straightened out shortly after I realized it was some of the programs I had. Good luck and GJ for taking care of your mum!
I removed the official facebook app and now I can go days without a charge. I have did find this kinda weird but whatever.

[Q] Refuses to charge, enter deep sleep, or disable wifi.-- New issue; help?

Perhaps someone can help. I've been trawling the net for answers to this issue, and have checked out a number of helpful threads, but it was something that still kept reoccurring for me. Today is the final straw - I just cannot get my phone to charge. I plugged it in last night at 40%, and after charging all night, and most of the day (save for when I unplugged it to restart, or remove battery), it's at 5% and falling.
Edit: After about 9 hours of intermittently restarting/removing battery repeatedly it's charging again. Didn't do anything new, and it'll doubtlessly repeat this fiasco again, as it tends to do.. So any suggestions are still more than welcome.
Issues I'm having:
Refuses to enter deep sleep - hangs at 384mhz.
Doesn't charge - even when shut down and plugged in.
///Keeps turning wifi on. (This is a new one that it's just started doing today. Enabling airplane mode does nothing. It just turns wifi back on.) - Edit: got it to stop doing this - didn't do anything other than restarting and removing battery a lot.
Things I've tried:
Silencing all the alerts.
Factory reset.
Uninstalling some apps I thought may have been doing it.
Disabling syncing.
Not using wifi.
Not plugging anything into the headphone jack.
Only plugging in/removing charger while the phone is unlocked.
Removing battery and waiting a few minutes.
Restarting repeatedly.
Other considerations:
I haven't changed anything. Stock ICS, updated OTA. It's under warranty.
Using original charger, and have never used any other chargers.
Side question - can anyone confirm that there are 4 pins in the charger, despite there being 5 indentations for them? I mean, in the bit that plugs into the phone. I know I saw a thread somewhere that detailed some info about the chargers, but I can't find it, and I'm wondering if my charger is off.
Any help or suggestions would be fantastic. This thing is frustratingly unreliable. I never know if I'm going to wake up to a useable phone or not.
Ugh ...
Thats a long list of broken features..
Did the phone get upgraded to ICS via kies or OTA ?
Is sounds like a bad firmware flash to me.
So if you are able, and the device will connect properly to PC, a kies restore may be in order here.
Otherwise, a warranty exchange is on the table as well ...g

OTA, and there didn't seem to be any issues with it. It began a few days after I upgraded to ICS, and as far as I know, I can't revert to Gingerbread without rooting (pardon - phone noob here), so will a kies restore actually help? Or would that be to try to reinstall ICS? (In case this is relevant, it's not consistent - sometimes I'll have up to a week with no problems.)
I'm keeping the warranty exchange as a last resort because it did work perfectly fine on Gingerbread. (Kind of hoping JellyBean will fix things..)
At any rate, thank you for replying and for your suggestion! I will dig around in Kies since that wasn't a route I've tried yet. Right now, it seems to be charging again so I'm going to let it get some power first. (And in case anyone is having similar problems, I didn't do anything to make it start charging other than what I've been trying on and off for the past 9 hours - just restarting, powering off, powering on, removing battery, etc repeatedly.)
Kies will push ICS to the device again ..but will often correct any data corruption from an OTA flash.
They were not always good downloads.
Kies will want to emergency restore the device, causing data loss.
It sounds like you may want to wait a bit longer, but I can't say how long on a JB update ..g

Aha, understood. Thanks for the warning re: data loss. I back up regularly but will double check that everything is saved before fiddling. Would try tonight, but it's gotten up to 20% and seems to have decided that that's the end of charging..
I believe, for my carrier, early Jan, so I may wait it out. (Though last time it kept getting bumped forward for a good few months.)
Sounds good ...
If you need further help, just revisit this thread.
We have a good bunch of note users here, that are happy to help out ....g
Even though it's been a long time, I hope that necroing the thread isn't too big a taboo. I thought I'd update this thread for any other poor sod who may be looking. (Not that my issues are over...) And if anyone has any more suggestions.. well, awesome.
I was unable to get Kies to actually connect to my phone, so the suggested solution did not work. After a few days of fighting Kies, I decided to just wait for JB. After JB, I was okay for a while, but then the draining started up again. This time I noticed that I had 4 processes running and eating up a ton of CPU. I don't recall what they were off the top of my head, but I think Media Storage, Download Manager, DRM Protected Content Storage and yet another. Force closing any one of them stopped them all, and stopped the drain, but they'd start up again. I'm not sure what triggered them, and a bit of digging showed that they are actually useful processes that I can't fully block, so.. for a bit I'd just check what processes were running if I noticed a quick drain, or used an app that alerted me when the phone was awake despite screen being turned off (not always reliable, sadly.) I couldn't catch it all the time, however, so that was really not useful. By the time I caught it, I'd have lost maybe 20% battery.
I read that those processes may be caused by a corrupted file in the internal "SD" or the external SD card. I hard reset, formatted the internal memory, removed the external and after that booted into recovery mode and cleared the cache, just in case.
Last night, after all this, the phone was still being flaky - holding at 1% on the charger for hours. As an added bonus, it now seems to run 4G incessantly, whereas previously it would only activate if I had an MMS coming in. (No data plan, I just have MMS capabilities.) I haven't even looked into that, because I'm just so sick of it all that I'm going to be trying to root today and see where that gets me.
Hopefully that will help anyone else who may be facing this..
Rooted (without screwups, woo), formatted internal memory, removed external micro SD card. Reinstalled my more "vital" apps, and got rid of some of the Rogers bloatware. Phone ran beautifully for a few days, then this morning I noticed battery drain and Media Storage was running at 50% CPU. Stopped it, and the drain stopped.
I didn't add my photos to the phone yet, except for a few albums that sync from Picasa Web Albums. I don't have any music or videos on there.
At this point, I'm debating a custom ROM but I have no idea if that will actually help with this issue? I'm a total noob when it comes to playing around with my phone, and it's only through sheer stubbornness that I gathered up the courage to root after weeks of researching. Another option is trying to find an app that just alerts me if one of those processes starts running so I don't have to keep checking what processes are active on my phone like some junkie. Does anything like that exist out there? I have a battery app that alerts me if the phone is awake with the screen off, but it doesn't always catch it - usually fails, in fact.
At this point, I'd love some help and feedback..

[Q] Verizon G3 Extreme Performance Issues

Not sure what is happening, but this phone went from being awesome to being hardly usable in a very short amount of time. I downloaded a Verizon update on or around November 5th, and ever since then, I have noticed the following issues ever since then.
- Overall slowness. Whether it's switching apps, making phone calls, turning the screen on or off...everything is just much slower and lags more often.
- Unresponsive at times. This occurs most often during phone calls. The proximity sensor does not activate correctly (screen will not turn on when I move the phone away from my face), and the touchscreen will not register input. It will happen other times, but never seems to follow a specific pattern.
- Random soft resets. Every once in a while, it will randomly go to the Verizon splash screen, for no reason. This has happened in the middle of phone calls, while using apps, and while the phone is just idle.
- Increased battery drain. Even turning down the screen brightness, and using some apps like CM cleaner to keep apps closed and clear up RAM usage, I am experiencing drain at an exponential rate (over 10% per hour when idle, and sometimes up to 20% per hour doing simple things like texting and making phone calls.)
I have researched multiple websites' solutions for crappy G3 performance. Some of their proposed solutions have applied to my problems, and I've tried each and every one of them. Nothing has really helped...turning brightness down, using apps like CM Cleaner and Battery Doctor, etc. My last hope is that I unmounted my SD card this morning...which, if it works, will be fine, but is kind of a bummer because I would have liked to have the expandable storage.
Unless the update I downloaded from Verizon (I don't think it was an actual Android update, but I'm not sure?) is what caused this, I can't find any more potential problems other than my phone being defective...which just doesn't make sense, as I've had it since launch now with no issues. The only other thing that I can think which may be affecting things is that the phone is encrypted (the SD card was not, I never found the time and eventually forgot)...and is also using a piece of software called Maas360 (which I installed around the same time as the update was downloaded), which I'm hoping does not affect phone performance this much, because it will be required by my work starting in the next couple weeks.

Ah encryption. That's your culprit. It sounds like you took Verizon's 11c update on the 5th of November. This was a minor security update that also added some minor features like a camera shortcut on the lockscreen. A lot of people have been experiencing very poor performance on the G3 after encrypting internal storage. Apparently, it drastically reduces read/write speeds as of now and is not ready for primetime. Hopefully with the Lollipop update around the corner, we will see this issue fixed. I would suggest decrypting your phone and seeing if that makes an improvement on overall fluidity. I know that that is a pain, but this seems like what has happened to several people who encrypted data on a stock LG ROM. Best of luck and let me know if encryption is not the issue!
