At&t 4G - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Would putting a 4G SIM in my flashed X10a improve upload and download speeds? Right now, when connected with PdaNet,phone is faster than typical standard DSL modem.
Thank you for the info.

Post your d/u speeds and we can compare.
On a good day I can get about 1.3d/.3u.
Tried using the 3.5g build.prop adjustments and it increased my down but decreased my up.

I was using PdaNet this past weekend and got pretty good download speeds. While connected, I went to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ on the PC side. Picking the 'SAN FRANCISCO, CA' location, I was able to get between 2.5Mbps and 2.8Mbps. This was while I was in Davis, California.
Now I'm back at home in Riverside County, California and my download speed (picking Speakeasy's 'LOS ANGELES, CA' location) is around 1.2Mbps.
I have an AT&T X10 on Sony Ericsson generic world 2.1. I haven't made any build.prop changes that may affect my 3G/'3.5G'.

Upload speeds via speednet app are 810-2130kbps dl,622-1190kbps ul. Location off tower is here in Greenville,NY,north of me of Freehold. Catskill,NY speeds seem somewhat slower, possibly due to it being the county seat, and near NYS Thruway.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App

Via Open networks app;238-2631kbps dl,328-1238kbps upload. Will switching out to a 4G SIM improve data speeds? The phone is running HSPA,which is the next gen. for at&t. Now,I don't know what my speeds are for NYC,since the phone was problematic, and I did a soft reset via resetting back to all original settings. Would getting a 4G SIM help boost speeds down there?
Sent from my X10a using XDA App

Oh,I have network settings on auto,GSM/WCDMA preferred. So the "H" for HSPA shows up now, hence a BIG boost in speeds. Just want to know if swapping out SIM,I might get better speeds, especially in metro areas like NYC,NJ and Westchester.

[Q] Firmware Band Selection

Guys,
I am about to received my SGS 2 tomorrow.
I am in Australia on a 850mhz 3g (read not GSM) network (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_G)
I know the phone supports this band, but I see some region firmwares floating around and am wondering if ALL firmwares support this band? Or is firmware specific.
Thanks guys.
Im on VR1.1 with everything else stock and next g is cool with me. Preordered from UK so mines from release.

Can I ask how you know your on Next G and not just 3g?
You can use non 850mhz Bands with Telstra and get std 3g.
Well im just assuming. But where i live all my family get 1bar with optus/3/voda whereas i get full bars. If u have a way for me to check ill have a look

not really sure how to check, the best I could figure out is install Network Info II and check network type
Should be HSDPA/UMTS?
I cant seem to find any tool to tell you exact frequency the phone is using.
It is not firmware dependent (If someone buys a Vodaphone branded SGS2 it is still going to work with NextG, but it will probably just be SIM locked). NextG is HSPA noted by the 'H+' symbol. When I was on Three is was just 'H' which is HSPDA.
If you dial *#*#4636#*#* and go phone information -> menu key -> Select Radio Band -> AUS2 Band
AUS2 is NextG 850Mhz, so if you get internet access on that, it is running NextG. The Phone Information section will also tell you your current network protocol also. If it is reporting UMTS then click the 'run ping test' button, it will flick over to HSPA
Hspa when data is being used
Umts when data is inactive

Also just rum some speed tests and you'll know if you're on 3g or HSDPA.

thanks guys.
Once it has charged I will put SIM in and test all this, very excited as moving from my HTC Desire
Sorry to dig this post up from the grave, but I'm about to move my SGSii to Telstra, as well.
I was wondering if you found benefit to these changes, and if you've changed anything further since.
Have you found any particular ROM/modem to be better (either in reception or battery life) than others.
And, finally, what sort of battery life do you get? I get about 14 hours before I have to plug it in, but I get terrible reception at work (I'm currently on 3), so I'm thinking that might have something to do with it.
Thanks heaps.

AT&T SGS2 Data Speeds

Hello fellas,
My 3g speeds are slow can you post your data speeds please i might have to call att to get the "4g" speed
Fixed I wasnt on the "4g" plan now im getting 3 and up on the DL
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA Premium App
Well, I normally get about 3-8mbps down and up to 1-2up. But the server is about 30 miles from me. That's with about 2-3 bars.
Well thats good im getting 1.8 down and 1.9 up 7km away from the sever at full bars
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA Premium App
I'm at 100k down, 50k up in '4G'. It really depends on where you are and how many ppl are using the same tower at the same time.

People having slow internet speeds with At&T samsung galaxy S2

DO NOT USE THE SPEEDTEST APP!! I was going crazy trying to figure out why I kept getting the same speeds as my Iphone 4 no matter the location or signal strength. Turns out that when I went directly to the speakeasy speedtest from the browser I got 11.51Mbps down and 1.06Mbps up!
(will upload pic of my results when i get more than 8 posts )
My guess is that the phone throttles the speeds for non intensive internet apps and it accidentally throttles speedtest. Nevertheless the only thing that was bugging me about this phone is fixed!
Yep you're right just got 10.78 down and 1.28 up

Good find. Same results as you!
Thanks!

i'm guessing this assumes that you live in one of the cities that the speakeasy browser test lets you select from...
i live in st. louis, so the closest city i could select was chicago - same results as the app for me.
Still getting 2.8-3.0/1 going this route. Exact same as the app for me.

I know I could feel better download speeds from actually using this device compared to kg ip4 and this just confirmed it. Thank you for the heads up.

Speed test app gave me 2.5 down about 0.8 up.
Ran a test on speakeasy as well as sprints speed test site and got
7.65 down 1.25 up on both

Those not getting the faster speeds try to pick a different server. I sometimes get better speeds from the san francisco server than the local LA server. Also, from home, I get 2-3 bars and never get over 3.5 Mbps so keep in mind that the tower youre connected to might not be upgraded for faux 4g or your signal might be weak.
When I run Speedtest on my Verizon 4G Xoom, it's showing 25-30 down.

When I run Speedtest on my gaming PC with Comcast Extreme I get 85GB down. What's your point?
Im on fiber here Im guessing I shouldnt say what Im getting
on H+ on att here in NYC, Jercity city and when taking Amtrak to Wilmington De, I am constantly getting 287k DOWN and 345k UP.. sucks!!!!!!!!!!
But, much better than my iphone on 3G.
Speedtest app gave me speeds of 2-3.5mb down and 1-1.3 up. Speakeasy speed test site now gives me 8.89mb down and 1.09 up. Very nice!
Using speakeasy, I got much better results. When the bandwidth is there, I'm able to get 7Mbps down, where as with the speed test app, I was having a hard time getting over 3Mbps.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I think it's Speakeasy or something. I get 11.5mbps download, and 3.5mbps upload on 4G from Speakeasy, but from Speedtest I get around 3.5mbps download, and 1.5mbps upload.
From my computer on wifi, using speedtest.net I get around 7mbps download, and around 4mbps upload. But using Speakeasy, it jumps to 11.5mbps download and 3.75mbps upload.
So, I think it's just that Speakeasy somehow boosts it up?
All I'm saying is that it's not a problem throttling the bandwidth of SpeedTest.
EDIT: Nevermind, I forgot to turn Wi-Fi off on my phone . Sorry, noob error. Using Speakeasy I get 1Mbps download, and .9Mbps upload...
Getting 3mbps on GS2 while my girlfriend's Atrix 2 gets 6mbps. Tried speedtest app, speak easy, Sprint's network test. Wtf? Maybe I got the wrong phone.

Like the previous guy said you get edge speeds unless tmobile has refarmed the 1900 MHZ in your area for HSPA speeds.
Below is the list of cities where tmobile has refarmed the 1900 MHZ.

The modem is the same chip as the nexus 4 and note2, so I would bet if you use their radios and ril, you would have hspa and hspa+.

Hey guys! Just got my phone yesterday and got it unlocked. For some reason though I'm not getting Data at all. I should be getting something since I live in Boca Raton, FL and that's not too far from Ft. Lauderdale, one of the cities listed on the link Kirdroid provided. On my previous phone (HD2) I got HSPA speeds in my area. You guys have any idea of what could it be? Or any other tips on what network settings i should have?

Yes that is exactly what I was missing. Thank you very much! Unfortunately I'm getting edge here where I work, but the connection here was irregular as well on my HD2, so I hope it's just the area. When I get home later I'll give an update.
Thanks again!

Wow the third option made my speeds faster! Thanks I was having issues with connectivity but that seemed to fix it up!
Update:
The first settings worked best for me. Although the HSPA+ speeds are somewhat irregular on the area where I live, it works great on the neighboring area.
Thanks for the help samomamo !

Does your phone stay connected at all times? Mine disconnects from the network rather frequently for no reason and the data connection is spotty on certain apps.

My connection is spotty too, but that really depends on the area. On areas closer to the Antenna it stays connected most of the time. But where I live my experience is close to yours.
I am on T-Mobile, did the Nexus conversion, and I can confirm that I am unable to get 3G on the 1700mHz band. I live next to a T-Mobile tower, and my last phone (TMOUS HTC One S) got 3G signal without a problem, so I know it isn't the area. I am only able to get EDGE and I have the Nexus 4 modem M9615A-CEFWMAZM_2.0.1700.33.
Sshshshsh! This illegal! No unlocking!!

To you guys who live in Florida:
I spent my day today in Miami Beach and the hspa+ speeds there are constant and stellar there. 4-5 mbps download and 2-3mbps upload. That kind of proves my assumption that it's a matter of the area and not the phone itself.

Miami is probably already refarmed with the 1900mHz band. Where I live about 40 minutes from Tampa, I do not get 3G from my home, which is near a T-Mobile tower.

Go with 3rd vpn Im getting 8-10 mbp so fast lovr it

Why is my ping so high, speed so low but still have 4g?!?

Ok, I have gone through the forums quite a bit and I cannot seem to figure it out. I have 4g be when I do a speed test is very low. I have tried several modems and they all are basically the same thing in terms of ping and network speeds. Currently, since I flashed a lot of modems the current one is unknown. Can someone whom is smarter than I figure this out? I cannot make heads or tales from this and the included pictures should help out a bit. Thanks everyone in advance

Looks like a normal signal to me. More than likely HSPA:11 or 15. Go to settings > about phone > status > and check your mobile network type. More than likely you are in a strong 3G but weak 4G area.
Its a very strong 4g network and the way I know this is because I was coming from a gs2 or t989 and its very strong. With that phone I get around 15mbps to 20mbps

You are not getting lte coverage so though your results are on the low side for 4g they are not so low that I would think anything is wrong with your hardware.
I have 4glte and my ping sometimes reach
100.

I am using the only one that I know of which is
Epc.Tmobile.Com, here where I live LTE is not here but the hspa+ or what Tmobile use to call 4g is "strong like bull" before I yield my gs2 my wife it was pulling down 15/10
