[REQ] Fonts... - Vibrant Themes and Apps

I have a couple of font conversion requests...if anyone would be so kind as to create apk's for them I'd be ever so grateful. Thanks in advance! Here they are:

im curious as to how to make fonts for android. ive seen some that come as an apk file (using fontimizer), or downloading ttf font files and simply replacing the default ones. i like the ttf method, but would like to be able to add ttf fonts while keeping the originals installed. if this can only be done with apk files, how do i convert ttf or other fonts to apk?

Questions for both of you.
What device are you using?
Are you rooted?
Does the font have to be an apk for use with fontomizor?
The reason I ask is that rooted devices are more volatile. And if you use a recovery such as clockwork, fonts can be flashed with .zip files rather than apk files. I know this because I change fonts all the time. And because I make the flashable fonts as well. Flashing a zip might not be as quick, but it is definitely more painless.
Please reply or pm me so I can help you out better.

That also works lol. Just seems like a lot of effort to get a new font to me. I'm all about efficiency lol

To answer your questions...
Obviously, I'm on a Vibrant, hence the posting in the Vibrant forum.
I'm not rooted & have NO DESIRE to root my phone. I'm not one of those people who buy a phone & try to make it "better" or an entirely different phone by doing all these things to it. If you're not going to be happy with the phone the way it is, why get it in the first place? smh.
I don't understand a damn thing about converting fonts...that's why I request conversions. I tried doing it myself several times, using the guide Alex linked to & I couldn't do it, so I gave up. Luckily for me, & others out there, there are some people on this forum, like Alex =), that were able to pick up the conversion process & fulfill requests when they have time.

Customize Lockscreen

Hi all,
I know how to change the wallpaper on the lockscreen but I was wondering if it's possible to remove the grey band displaying the operator and the time. It really doesn't match my wallpaper I've searched for this but I can't find any solution.
Drizzys rom has the type of lockscreen you are after. Drop him a PM and see if he can help.
It would be great if Drizzy could provide the way that the lockscreen can be customized so we can all know, instead of PMing each other.
Thanks ritdaw. I'll give it a look.
ill second that, this would be really really interesting!!

Sorry I only said PM because I'm sure Drizzy doesn't get a chance to read all of the posts on here, Heck I try, but it takes a lot of time!
Perhaps once spamianspoon has some answers he can share with the rest of us.
You need to get one a ressource apk from your phone (/system/app/htc-ressources.apk or something like that), extract it (renaming it to .zip will do magic ), mod the ressource you need to, zip it and upload it back to your phone after renaming it to .apk .
Of course, you need to be root, and you must do a backup (nandroid is perfect for that) since it can make your current system unbootable
Thanks Dream team. I'll give it a try. Bit busy right now, so it'll be a few days. Have you done this yourself?
Cheers.

/system/framework/com.htc.resources.apk
i edited the file as described by dream_team. it works perfectly

installing fonts

i was just wondering if anyone knows a way to manually install more fonts on the vibrant.
I was wondering the same thing

appreciate it. will give it a shot. hopefully it works for non-root.
What if you want to use a font that flipfonts hasn't offered?
EDIT: NM got it, an app for Root users called Type Fresh can backup/ restore system fonts, and can install new fonts with proper permissions. Any TTF font file works, but picking ones that are designed for on screen viewing is best.

thanks! zinite and the chrome coyote
EDIT: i tried the app. i got to the point where i restart the phone but the new fonts do not apply. have you or anyone got this to work right on the vibrant yet? (the chrome coyote)
I tried it as well and also had no success. Font would not apply.
At least you Vibrant users got some "starter fonts" out of the box.
Captivates don't come with any besides the default.
I highly recommend the Helvetica Neue from the Market, btw, especially if you were fond of the Zune interface.

Yes. I ran into this problem as well. You need to go to Settings and return your fonts to "Default" and reboot before you will see the changes.
The app works by replacing the default fonts, if the phone is already using a flipfont font then it wont work

I'll give that a try as it seems like a very reasonable reason why it wasn't working. Thanks for that.
Try my guide: http://www.xxthe3dmanxx.com/AndroidFonts/androidfont.html
It was written for the Moto Cliq but might work on the vibrant.

Just tried it. Did not work. Not sure if I did anything wrong, but I followed directions properly. Phone would not boot past initial Samsung Vibrant screen. Luckily I was able to ADB the .backup out and replace the original.
I just recently put this in the sticky in the general section. I listed the directory where to put the font, reboot, go to the settings and select the font, phone should reboot with the new font added.
I would LOVE IF you could test the directory for me. I bought helvatica through the system, do I think it's correct.

You need to adjust the permissions of the renamed font files to match the stock fonts or else you'll boot loop

Ok...I followed the directions and did as they said. So, how does one go about doing this?
I use Root Explorer, as its one of the easiest ways to move system files around your phone.
To save you time looking in /system/fonts the permissions are:
User: Read-Yes, Write-Yes, Execute-No
Group: Read-Yes, Write-Yes, Execute-Yes
Others: Read-Yes, Write-No, Execute-Yes
Using Root explorer, you can navigate to your renamed DroidSans.ttf and DroidSans-Bold.ttf files, long press on them and select "permissions", then make sure the permissions match the stock font's listed above.
I cant express how effective the Type Fresh App was in doing this for me, and saves me a whole ton of hassle renaming everything. Plus its free.

Thanks for that. Guess I'll give it a go again later today. I'll try Type Fresh again first, then move to doing it manually.
International Fonts
For more fonts and also international fonts, I did a tutorial on a Moto Droid couple months back, it should be exactly the same for "ROOTED" Samsung Vibrant:
http://nexusonehacks.net/android-hacks/droid-hack-how-to-install-thai-font-on-droid/
What I would like to know is how to write the AKP for flipfonts.
I wanted to pull one of the APKs from the Apps directory, but it seems to to work. I also tried making a backup of the APK with titanium backup, but the zip is empty. It seems the files are protected in some way.
I just wanted to take a look at the structure of the apk so I can use it as a template to create custom font APKs to side load.
If anyone can manage to make a backup of one of the flipfont APKs please explain how you did so.
I installed thai fonts by update.zip no root required.

[Q] Signing Help ..

Hey all, Well i know we could not wait for a Honeycomb theme, i know i cannot, but heres my conundrum.
I have made a honeycomb keyboard, but cannot get it to install for the life of me, ive used the testkeys, shared, platform, etc (all using Signapktic from Stericson. Does anyone have any clue as to why it will not install?
A few questions that i know you might ask, answered ...
No, there is no other keyboard, other than swype, and samsung keypad..
I made it off of the GB keyboard...
Yes, I have made many of themes, many of changes to Frameworks, and have had sucess installing, and running my custom roms....
My question basically is this, IF POSSIBLE, CAN ANYONE SIGN THE FILES I HAVE TO MAKE THIS WORK? PM ME AND I SHALL SEND THE FILES. CREDIT WILL BE GIVIN, I AM ON THE OTHER HAND GOING TO NEED SOME SORT OF PROOF YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING, I WORKED REAL HARD ON THIS, SO FOR RIGHT NOW ITS PRIVATE, HENSE THE PM.
THANKS AGAIN IN ADVANCE. REMEMBER .. LETS GET THIS HONEYTCOMB GOING
I know that most of the keyboards dont work simply by installing but rather need to be pushed to the data\app or data\app_s folder depending on which rom you are running. You can accomplish this using adb or using a file explorer like RootExplorer.
Thanks
Thank you man, this helps a whole lot. Now do i need to re-sign each apk inside the rom folder? or can i just re-sign the .zip?

I'm not sure what .zip you're refering to other than a CWM recovery flashable .zip for you keyboard. If this is what you mean, then use the same signiture (key) you'd find in any of the flashable .zips on the forums. In other words, just copy over the META-INF folder from some other .zip to yours. Of course, you'll want to make sure the update-script in this folder is pointing at the proper directories for installation.
For your apk, you should only need to sign it if you changed the AndroidManifest.xml. Otherwise, just keep the META-INF folder from them original apk.

noob who wants to learn

I want to learn how to theme. I've read this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916814
I Think i understand the process of editing images, I'm not a noob when it comes to photoshop, but i get a little frustrated when it comes to the topic of signing. I have a windows vista system, and section two of this https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AcdxIJRSH9ypZGZzc2pxNDlfMjdnazk4OHNxZA&hl=en states that signing in vista causes bootloops unless you take other steps. The directions for XP seem so straight forward, is there a way to sign without all the hassle that vista seems to cause?
I've been told that if you use another theme for a base, resigning is not needed. I'm a noob at this also, really wanting to learn.

When it comes to basic themeing, you don't need to sign anything....its a matter of extracting and re-zipping the apk without signing it so it keeps its original signature...then you would add all your themed apks in a CWM flashable zip(that isn't signed either).....use APK Manager....it works wonders for theme devs

Thanks man,
If i'm understanding you correctly you are basically saying that if i take from an existing theme i don't have to sign. but i create my own theme based off of a rom i need to sign it?
EDIT: nevermind, i mixed both responses up and with my question. i'm a little off today

Ok...let me try to clarify this...if you're new to theme developing, get "signing" out of your head
You would only need to sign an apk if it was being installed...
When you theme, nothing is being "installed", all of the original apks that are in your /system/ directory are replaced with your themed ones while flashing....
YOU NEVER SIGN AN APK THAT IS BEING SENT TO /system/ DIRECTORY
In reality, no themed apks are signed, because they are sent to the /system/ directory....its just a matter of extracting the stock apk, make your mods, and re-zip. As a said above, if you use Apk Manager, this will be a breeze

If you have any other questions, PM me....i'm always willing to help someone who is willing to learn.
What I do when i want to change something... example I made my own lock screen.
If it was already explained how to do this... im sorry for wasting your and mine time... I only have about 5 minutes so I cant read everything before i post this... but this is what i do when i want to edit the theme.
I put the rom on my computer and extract it... locate the files I need to edit, (they are alwas going to be in the res folder of an extracted .apk and then in a drawable folder.) I take the files i want and I edit them. put them back on my phone... copy the framework-res.apk from systems>framework>framework-res.apk and then put it in a folder i created on my sdcard.
Using Astro File Manager I select my edited files and copy them.... then click on framework-res.apk and select browse and past my edited files into the framework-res.apk then using root explorer I then copy my edited framework-res.apk and paste it back in system>framework>framework-res.apk

[Q] Easy way to install Segoe WP font

Hi,
I’m new to the SGS3, but not so new to android, but still have problem with fonts. When I got SGS2 I got Segoe WP font (from Windows Phone), which fits perfectly for me, but when I want to download it now for SGS3 I can’t find installable .apk file – even here I found many threats with links, but all of them are zipped folders. How to install it, so I can choose font from settings/screen/font? I don’t have root and didn’t had back with SGS2, so there is way to install it easily. Can someone help me with it? What am I doing wrong?
