Anyone want to point me to a good place where I can learn how to create themes and roms? And does it require heavy programming experience?
Samsung Fascinate
Evil Fascination
Nitro Honeycomb
No idea what kernel..its voodoo though

Welcome?
Maybe tonu can help you?

new to samsung all together...
been with motorola and SonyEricsson for ever and a day. My friend has a vibrant, and its pretty sweet.. thinking about getting one. Im NOT NEW to mods and editing, scripting or anything else...I have numerous hand built mods on my milestone... just new to samsung and the "odin" deal it uses to mod things.
he has the TeamWhiskey Bionix 2.1 build... just curious as to how solid that really is, and if its worth the download.
also... any other suggested roms/mods... im not a beginner, so dont be afraid to the throw a curveball at me... just looking for fun to try, since im 100% to samsung.

Welcome, And good to see your enthusiasim. All of the roms you can pick up for this device are pretty solid. I have made it a point to flash every rom I can get my hands on, and have been plesently surprised with how polished they all are.
I would suggest picking up a 2.2 rom, macnut, axura, onyx, obsidian, aosp'ish... and letting that take root on your vibe. And once you get a hold of that take a peak at the FFC thread ( Sorry if this seems condescending, but FFC is Front Facing Camera ). You will be glad you did, because the fact that the Vibrant can be modded in such a unique way makes me glad I have it.
Lastly have some fun with the plethora of Kernels available... Play with stock, get dirty with an OC/UV, or have a little fun with Universal Lag Fix... There are so many posibilities out there
Check the stickies, they have the best links to all these options
All is required it to root Vibrant to unleash the beast hidden inside it!
ODIN isn't used for modding per se, it is for one of these moments when you go "oh snap, i might've bricked my Vibrant"
Before modding begins make sure you can reliably get into recovery and download modes with ADB and manually.
All the tools and tips are available in the bible in the dev section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771111
And as with most *NIX systems RTFM my friend where available
Happy modding!
The link in my signature takes care of the basics to get rooted, get a recovery, maing backups...
For roms, I suggest froyo. There is also a link to what many prefer for froyo in my signature as well.
The Vibrant is a cake-walk and a tank, VERY hard to brick if you use common sense. The one thing to remember is that a nandroid does not restore a kernel 9moving from eclair to froyo and vice versa).
well after reading up on alot of them, im interested in the new Obsidian 4.2 and the AOSP'ish rom.
Now its this similar to motorola modding, where i just flash the rom & im done? ...or is there additional stuff that needs to be done? I keep hearing about this "LagFix" thing.. and im not really sure what that is, or what it does.
Im not the hugest fan of froyo, but TeamWhiskey seems to really know their stuff, so i just want to know how to get 2.2 loaded, so i can load these roms.
I have my milestone all tricked out, and custom edits to the build.prop, ect... but our roms are based on recovery images, not kernels, since the kernel isnt FULLY unlocked.
yep... getting the phone on wednesday! pretty stoked about it!
can someone point to the things i need to load the 2.2 based Obsidian 4.2?
im new to samsung & dont understand their extensions or how to load the new kernels.

Read the "Tips & Tricks" sticky.
You will need to root & install CWM.
But remeber, rooting your phone kills your warranty

Im well aware of that. I havent had a phone that belongs to AT&T for a long time. My milestone comes from Telus in canada & the Vibe im about to get is being bought from my neighbor... Just getting a little tired of my milestone, and want a new toy to play with.
Now I'm in no way or shape the smartest person in the world...but I am very very far from being stupid, I just don't know where to begin with this.
What I want to do is take the phone app and the touchwizgtg launcher both in eugenes macnut and put them on the leaked stock version of 2.2. Because I feel that the stock 2.2 has the best battery life... yet I love some of the features that the macnut has to offer.
(I have been flashing so many roms, trying to find the one I feel is the best. I'm not even sure what one I just had that had amazing battery life. haha)
Keep in mind i have no experience in this... but I learn really quick and would love to build on my collection of weekend reading material. Only problem is I have been here for months and still have no clue where to even start reading up on this stuff.
Now I know how I can put in the touchwizgtg launcher because its all explained in their thread.
But I dont know where to even start with eugenes phone app.
and I am more interested in packing it all up in a nice flashable image, that way if anyone else wants it.. I can send it to them.
I would like to get into developing themes and have all the necessary know and tools. I am just having some trouble coming up with ideas. So here I am, suggestions?
You mean like a guide on how to theme?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916814
No, I've got that down, i'm more looking for a concept to build on, like how we have black froyo and what not, im looking for suggestions on what kind of theme to make. but thank you for your response
Professional, clean lines/sharp, color choices that are easy on the eye, easily readable.. something that looks more professional/modern.
black/slate blue/gray
OK sorry about that. Thought you were talking about something else.
If I were to do a theme Id like to do something centered around engine block orange With transparency's
Windows 3.1 had a color theme called "Hot Dog Stand."
I would love to see that ported to the vibrant.

Alright, well the past 2 posts sound nothing like what I was talking about.... maybe clean/sharp/professional is not what the masses want.

I think i will most likely do the clean sharp and professional just cuz we need something to show other people who get phones for work to show them that these are just not toys. I do like the idea of a engine/car inspired theme tho that one is going to take alot of creativity to do. I will probably start with a clean and professional one. See what it turns into and use that to help me solidify my skill set. I know most people nowadays are using either tw d4a or eijenhar and i think most of the key roms are KA7 based.
Aren't most of these roms based off the deodexed voodoo ka7 kernel? if so thats what i will likely start themeing for.
Star Trek Consoles.

There is a new leak, doubtful you will ever be able to keep up (not a hit on you, just moves fast)....
KA7 and the voodoo kernel is money though. I am wanting to try Eugenes new kernel, but have not yet.. sounds like he has really improved the battery. Currently running Flagship V3 with no plans to switch, best rom I have used to date.
Glad to hear you are taking the clean route!

I mean is there going to be a CM7 specifically for Vibrant? Not something that has to be ported.
I hear that CM7 is the best and I'm looking forward to using it as my daily ROM or driver for a very long time. So if anyone can please hook me up with some answers, it'd be greatly appreciated.
Seems so.
Probably not from scratch, but look here:

It's a port for basically every phone. It's simply a matter of who does the porting. I doubt codeworkx or those currently working with him will be porting it to our phone because they don't own a Vibrant. That's of little concern however, because the port from i9000 to the Vibrant will be quick and painless realistically.

I would hope that we get a full working CM7 to the Vibrant, I hear it's the best. I want to stop flashing different ROMs every other day and stay with something good so I hope CM7 is that something. The I9000 is very similar to the vibrant, so why they wouldn't make one is beyond me.
Hey,
I own a Micromax A70 which runs on v2.2.1
It's just a poor ROM, crashes too often.
Can someone here tell me how do we port ROMs to phones?
Be it CM7, MIUI or the original gingerbread.
Help is appreciated.
I don't know how experienced you are..but its best to leave this to the dev's. Its extremely hard to port aosp (cm7/miui) to a new device, depending on if you have source code from the manufacturer.
I'm not much experienced and I wanted to leave it to devs but I don't think any dev is interested in this phone.....
So I wanna do it myself ...
Sent from my Micromax_A70 using XDA App
A google search could help...I'm too lazy right now. But google searching will be the least of your problems...its (near) impossible.
Does it have to be cyanogen mod? You could root and delete a bunch of not-needed apps and that would probably help.
i'm also looking for a guide/tutorial as well
And it's not hard to port if you have basic howknow and common sense...seriously stop saying that "it is impossible" and stuff like that because everything who is done by someone else can be done by you...

Do it then . My phone still doesn't have cyanogen mod and its much more powerful and used then the micromax a70. Does it run aosp android? Or did the manufacturer throw a skin (sense, touchwiz, motoblur) on it?
