[Q] Does flashing an SBF touch the internal phone storage? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have flashed an sbf before to install greyblur and lost all my apps.. i didnt think that was supposed to happen but no big deal. i was able to clean up my apps and got better batt life out of it.
this time i was going to try gingerblur out again since its been quite a few updates. I was on 4.1.57 or whatever rooted and couldnt ota to 1.83. well i tried flashing a .57 sbf and downloading the ota there, couldnt get it to tell me i had an update, so i flashed back down to 4.1.2 that i had from installing greyblur and work my way up through the ota updates. I did so and everything worked perfectly. well i thought...
I just noticed all my internal phone storage has been wiped. completely. no pics no music, no ringtones. i could care less about the music and ringtones, but the pics i really wanted to keep. I have a newborn and quite a few pictures of him that I havent recently backed up. it makes me sick to think they are gone. I have some software to pull data off of bad harddrives and ones that have been formatted over. but i cant seem to get it to read my phone.
first off, is there anyway to recover this? and what the hell could have went wrong to make it do this?
im really starting to feel that this phone is a piece of ****. i already have cracked my screen by dropping it on its side and literally every person i get on the phone with says they cant hear me so i have to yell
/rant
thanks

Yes using a sbf wipes your phone, it is stated many times in the threads. 1.8.3 is the only exception to the rule so far. Also thing like photos of your new born should have been backed up before doing this asthey are too important to lose. I don't know that you will be able to get them back. Sorry.

the last time i flashed an sbf it kept all my files.. weird. this time it didnt.
on a side note, i have gotten almost everything back so far and still digging by using getdataback for FAT

flashing SBF wipes your phone clean but doesnt mess with ur internal SD card. if u use ginberbreak to root then thats the problem. Gingerbreak root is known to wipe ur internal/ext sd card. its always recommended to backup all ur stuff before flashing.

[Q] Call Problems, a little help??

my wifes phone has been having some problems as far as sometimes when you answer/make a call you cant hear the person on the other end. they are there, but just no sound. this happens untill a reboot. i've flashed another rom thinking it was that, but still the same problem.
also its saying that the phone memory is full??? she doesnt have many apps at all? ive cleared the dalvik cache, and moved the cache to sd, but i dont think i should have to. what could be taking up so much space?
btw, i used titanium recover to backup her stuff before hand, dunno if that has anything to do with it.
thanks for any help
Try wiping the ROM and reinstalling then don't use Titanium Backup.
Then what do I backup with?

What radio are you using? Go to settings/about phone. It's the baseband version. The latest is 2.42.01.04.27. I had the same issue as your wife until I installed this radio. Haven't had it since. Go to the droid eris android development forum and do a search for it there. I can't post links since I'm a new member.
ya, i was thinking about that. ill have to look tonight.
and again, after deleting the few programs she has, and moving all caches to sd, it says phone memory is full again?? she says she hasnt downloaded anything else.

[Q] Will the SBF file assist in future updates

I know we have the SBF file now to go back to stock in case anything bad happens while modifying our phones. If say something got deleted or replaced from the phone that is needed for the phone to properly receive an update would using the SBF fix this issue completely? I've figured out all the hacks thus far just still fairly new with Android and was just curious.

Yep, the SBF will restore EVERY THING to a store bought condition in the internal phone storage (Doesn't touch your internal/external SD) so you'll be able to receive any updates.

[Q] messed up big time, PLEASE HELP

To put it simply when I boot up my vibrant, it switches to the galaxy s GT-19000 screen then fully boots into what seems like a completely different phone. My contacts were still there until I factory reset, but none of my apps or anything. I also believe that my calls and messaging do not work. I just recently rooted my phone but where things went bad is when I tried installing voodoo lagfix. I tried adding the link where I got the dl for voodoo lagfix but because I am a new user I can not add links, but i got it from the project voodoo website and it was the second link in their dl section, the one for froyo installable with clockworkmod recovery and rom manager. When I try and go into recovery mode ClockwordMod Recovery v2.5.1.3 - Voodoo lagfix is what comes up and is completely different from what the recovery was before. I just want to get rid of voodoo and get my phone back to how it was before. Im sorry for the terrible description, if there is anything else I need to add just let me know, but please, what can I do to fix my phone? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Can you get into download mode?
If so, ODIN to stock JFD.
you may need to use Vol Up + Power, unlike the normal way which is both volume buttons pressed in.
thank you! I used your guide in your sig, which was very helpful, phone is back to normal, however, all of my apps and what not are gone. I am an idiot and forgot to backup before I made changes, is there any other way that I can get back to the way my phone was before? And after going back to the stock JFD using odin, will I still have voodoo on my phone?
If you used titanium backup, your folder of backups should still be on your internal.
If you did not backup, sorry... hope you have them backed up.
No, you do not have voodoo now.
I did back up all of my app with titanium back up, so do I just have to re-dl titanium back up in the market and then just go from there?
^ Ti Backup needs root, so grab the update.zip from my guide and root (incredibly easy), move it to internal, go to stock recovery, install, reboot, you are rooted.
At this point, before you restore, you need to update to a more recent version of Android. you do NOT want to be stuck on JFD (2.1). I'd suggest a ROM like Trigger... crazy stable, faster and themed (I like it).
THEN you can restore your apps after downloading titanium backup (assuming you have them backed up on your internal already).
also, when I connect to my pc and look at my internal sd, the voodoo folder is still there
sorry Im a complete noob to this stuff
Sounds like somebodies got a lot of apps to download againlol. Now you'll remember to get TB and make a backup, heheh, but oh well its a learning experience really! If you have any apps that you paid forl at least gmail will remember that and you will see them as purchased, but unfortunately you'll still have to search for them individually.

whats in it?
- prob just a bunch of logz(lol) just ignore it
^^ the voodoo folder is there b/c you did not format your card *no reason to*
when/if you flash trigger, it will convert you to EXT4 file system (voodoo). This IS okay and not a big deal. Not sure what site you went to, but I have 190% faith in the Trigger ROM and voodoo.. both have very talented people supporting it.
^ Paid apps do not need to be searched for. Look in My Apps, they are all there. He also apparently DID make a backup at some point so lets not go bashing the guy.
I do agree to backup often.
I don't think theyre on my internal anymore, I did a clear cache, factory reset when my phone was initially messed up and I think thats where my problem lies. and as for the rom, what are your thoughts on the TW bionix rom? I initially was trying to root and install this rom

It is a bunch of logs, can I just delete this altogether?
Your call man. I made my suggestion for speed/stability/appearance. Don't delete the voodoo folder, even if you did, it will be there after you flash your rom.

You can do whatever you want with it if ur just gonna ODIN and re-flash. I just thought this was funny my bad. I wouldn't be too concerned with it really. Just leave it alone.
- If in fact you made a backup with TB and moved it to ur PC you could replace that back into the /sdcard/ and when you re-download TB just run the restore batch. BOOM! good to go. If not then oh well.
- The "myapps" will show you all your purchased ROMs so you will not need to research for them, just need to re-download them but any "free" apps will need to be researched and redownloaded.
- My friend has a Nexus S and she says that when she does an initial setup after flashing any ROM the gmail sync automatically downloads all her purchased apps. Thats what I was refering to cuz that would be friggin titz!
- Team Whiskey ROMs are proven and stable Bionix is a great choice to flash.
Good luck!
^ GB restores automatically, while good for some.. I hate it. Takes longer to download/install than restoring AND it doesn't restore the data (boo)

my turn for help

I am usually here hoping to help others, now its my turn..............
I am a bit stumped here. I am trying to figure out why my phone doesn't seem to want to run 4.3
I have tried almost all of them. with stock kernel and alternate. I am not flashing a bunch of extra stuff or anything and ran various different builds. I am not trying to over rev the engine either. ive done these test over the past 2 weeks so i know i am not rushing anything
what I had been doing was flashing a ROM, any 4.3 and appropriate Gapps. I am very hygienic flasher and very careful to flash compatible packages. I would flash package and then use APP2ZIP to bring back all my apps. on the average about 24 hrs after flashing, I get reboot and it wont come back up. just keeps boot looping. I was thinking maybe had something to do with the apps i saved and flashed from APP2ZIPP being from 4.2 Gapps??? and i am trying to run 4.3 now. sounds kind of dumb now that i am typing it but, you pour a shot glass full of information into a thimball size brain, and you are bound to spill something.
so i tried today the 8/26 build of PAC ROM and did not flash my app zip. 2 hours later.........boot loop.
4.1 & 4.2 does not do this..............i don't get it.
is it something so simple it just got spilled?
4.3 didn't like my phone much either .........

That sucks captemo, 4.3 runs great on my phone far more stable then 4.2 . Have you tried wiping your internal and memory card? Is try that save all your important stuff wipe your phone completely and see how it runs.

You could try reverting to stock first, then installing 4.3.
My phone didn't like any custom roms besides padawan and I'm like wtf? One day I decided to use kies and blitz everything on my phone. Now I can flash any rom properly and don't have any issues. I also blitzed the memory card so everything was fresh.
Sorry to hear your troubles. Good luck!

i have thought about that, read that others have done this..........i get a little nervous on things like this though. i have seen so many files and not sure what comes in the OS and what i ended up putting in there. whats ok to dump and whats not. or if i dump it all, will the necessities load back in with new ROM? honestly, i can get so nervous on what i consider a drastic move, i will say some very stupid things.

i have thought about both of these. i don't really consider this TROUBLES. not like i cant run any of these great ROM's on this excellent site. i cant eat caviar, but i am definitely NOT starving. i just cant seem to run 4.3. you think the flash counter has anything to do with??? i know, another dumb comment.
i suppose if something goes wrong, i have even better reasoning in convincing AT&T to allow me early upgrade............hmmmmmmmm.
can you say MMMMEEEEEGGGGAAAA ?
thanks guys, i appreciate the responses. will let ya know
I've ODIN'd back to stock several times when I start getting unusual problems. Very simple process actually and BlownFuze has a simple guide with the necessary files to download in his AOKP thread. Just save your music, pictures, ringtone, notification, SMS backup and download folder files and any other files you have added to phone storage to your PC. Flash back to stock, root and install TWRP then wipe everything including emmc and away you go. If you go into TWRP and mount your storage you'll find that the file transfer to and from the PC goes much faster. Hope this helps.

i thank you for your feedback .i have returned to stock many times. it is the suggestion of clearing internal storage and deleting something vital. like going in for hangnail and removing the brain.
back on 4.2 until i get my ducks in a row and rehearse the process.

i don't think we ever know as much as we want to know.
many times i tell folks to slow down, read and understand what you are doing. i try and do the same even on the most basic things. its when you get to comfortable that you make the dumbest mistakes. that's why i actually do kind of rehearse. i go through all the motions and my wife will even ask "who are you talking to?"
these devices are just too expensive to be careless. nobody is going to give me money or fix my phone for me.
I delete internal with every flash .. I do complete wipes every time haha

Cap, my wife has my Note now, but it's running the first nightly of official 10.2 with Jamie's uber kernel.
Now, I don't mess with the kernel or change anything....I run just like Jamie offers it. And I mainly use the kernel for the swipe2wake feature. I didn't experience any r/r's when I was using it and let me tell you, if my wife was having problems.....she would be *****ing my head off.....

alright, so as I like to weigh my options, research and be confident.
I respect many opinions here and value experience. I agree that wiping the memory is probably not a bad idea. from what I gather, there are 2 ways to go about this..........
1. for arguments sake I will call it he manual way. where I need to move everything myself, either to SD or computer, wipe, then replace?
2. let KIES do all the work? honestly i have not used KIES in this type of situation.
will I need to root again or will it retain?
will KIES get a full erase as manual option my provide?
if I choose manual option how do I know I have moved ONLY my personal stuff and not a valuable part of the OS required for phone work after laying the ground to waste with napalm?
I can give anybody $500 or a brick, I don't need to make it myself

[Q] Rezound internal memory

I installed INFECTION 2.9.1 over my rooted ICS installation, but decided I liked the look of the ICS sense better, so I decided to restore my nandroid image of ICS. It booted up but got stuck on the screen right after the white HTC one. I flashed back to jellybean and tried a FACTORY RESET. It reboots me into RA-VIGOR with the error message "E:Invalid command argument"
I can boot back into jellybean but now it is telling me there is NO INTERNAL memory. Where did it go?
Have I killed my phone here?

No you just didnt read threads or previous quiestions...upon moving from stock to a 4.2 based rom you got the bug from memory on that...you need to switch to twrp if not on that and mount and partition your emmc and internal sd card....this has been a known bug for the longest time now....dont use Amon Ra (RA-VIGOR) as it gives bugs on rom installs for any rom really and it doesnt play nice....such as possible phone overheats, battery drain, and many random reboots even after not upping your min frequency

Yep, you are right, I did not read previous threads as I did not know there was a problem with Amon Ra when I first installed it. The Infection 2.9.1 thread recomemended using it! Anyhow, I have since got a message pop up on the screen that said something about bad memory and told me to format it. I did, and now I can see my internal storage again. It is now empty of course, but what was on it when it was factory ? Is there anywhere I could get a copy of those files from?

Hey, as you seem to be very knowledgeable about all this (and i'm most definatly not , what I ultimatley would like is jellybean with the sense clock and weather . I also noticed from the infected rom that the camera did not report how many pictures could be taken with the available memory left. Is there is a rom out there can satisfy my needs? Yes, it is the internal 10gb that I meant. For a while it was not showing, either on the phone or in windows. After the message on the phone came up to format it (which I did) I could then see it in both windows and on the phone. I had not taken any notice of what was on it beforehand. I have only had the phone for a couple of weeks as it was given to me by a friend who was cut off from Verizon for not paying his bill !! I shoved in a TMOBILE sim from a spare phone I had and it works just fine for making calls but only Edge for data (not that it matters as I have a Optimus L9 for data)
Any info you could find would be most appreciated.

to go back to stock you actually have to first s-off and unlock the bootloader....also 4.2 reboots furiously if you dont set things up right...try a 4.3 rom like Tachyon or Carbon Rom....on either one of those ive yet to have a randoom reboot on proper settings that i set up

I was looking at the Tachyon rom yesterday as it happens, but I read somewhere that in 4.3 they changed something with the way memory is handled? and that you can no longer select the external SD card in the camera app, only the internal memory. Is that right?

yes but to be honest....stock is the same exact way
Edit...if your looking for a good fresh fast and to have everything work but base build go with tachyon....if your looking for fully customizable everything thats fast and stable go with carbon rom or pac 4.3....also you can download and replace the stock gallery with one that does save to internal sd card which is 10gb...you can always transfer to external sd as well as to a pc
