Hey all, I am bandroidx, a bravo developer. I ported CWM bootstrap to the bravo and recently released the first bravo rom. In the process I was sick of having to re-enable unknown sources all the time using the current methods and decided to make an app and I recently put it on the android market since it works for all att devices including the atrix. Most of the people who have bought the app so far arent bravo users but atrix users so I figured i'd post it here.
its not free but at $1.69 I made it paid in the hopes of supporting my future android development, I would like to purchase an atrix from ebay (as i did with my bravo) so I can do atrix specific development. Its also much cheaper then buying other apps to do this on your phone if you dont already own them. Either way, I find the app to be a time saver and have heard positive feedback from many atrix users. All you need is temp root to enable the unknown sources, then you dont need to be rooted. you can turn unknown sources on and off via the checkbox. The app also has a return to stock function incase you need it
you can get it from the android market here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.bandroidx.nmaenabler&feature=more_from_developer
you can use the market contact developer link or pm here if you have any suggestions. I have heard att might stop this on future devices as it should be, lets hope that holds true. Of course for those of us with an already blocked device, I fear a workaround like this app will be our own choice till we upgrade to a newer device
thanks all
-bandroidx
thanks, but we already have batch scripts that does this for free. It's not as quick as downloading an apk, but all you have to do is download the gladenable batch script and run it.
it would be nice to see other stuff from you though. hope you get the phone
ditto...if you're serious about getting atrix custom rom going i'd rather send you a virtual beer in the form of paypal...hopefully my sentiment is shared by others
edit: just donated to put my money where my mouth is. it will be nice to have you onboard the atrix efforts. cheers!
Nice app!
I applaud your effort, none the less, as someone already pointed out there are free alternatives that are truly not that much more of a hassle.
Most custom PsuedoROMs already do this by default and this non-market apps only applies to ATT users as all the other Atrix users out there dont have to deal with this at all.
Just a heads up!
still cool though, thanks for the app, i am surprised no one has created something this stupid-easy before, not that current methods aren't already pretty stupidly-easy, i am all for supporting good development but i too prefer to diy when free, thanks for the info though
Great app!!!
Moved to proper forum.
thank you for the app
I also like when is free, but some times you have to support. Its not because is free or not. Is because what the developers has done and is planning to do for the comunity. It wont hurt nobody donate a few bucks from time to time. Thanks.
thanks much for all the kind words, feedback, comments and gripes. I appreciate them all
Yeah basically I thought I could release this to compliment my free/donate versions of the apps and I know many people will do it the other ways, but I heard feedback that people wanted just an easy apk to do it, and I had the idea so I went for it.
I gave away my other apps for free (my recovery app is coming out for free soon too) but found that ads dont work well with rooted apps (something with rooted users and ad free lol). I will continue to do mostly free apps, thanks for understanding.
The app has actually gotten pretty popular, I am up to like 120 installs (about 70% atrix users and have added support for non-moto phones like the galaxy s (captivate). Today i noticed the app is #62 on the top new paid apps list thanks for all the support guys.
I dont have the funds yet but I am hoping to build up some more to check out some atrix's on ebay. I am not sure what they are going for, but I am expecting close to $500. I may see if I could get one with a cracked screen or some cosmetic damage that would still allow me to use it as a dev phone. As a matter of fact if any of you damage your atrix and it works but dont have insurance (liek a cracked screen) let me know

I posted about your app a couple weeks back. I bought it from the Market. It works great. The fastest way to enable non market apps. Great work. I never realized a Fellow xda member made this. Xda developers always making the cool stuff. I used this app on my motorola Atrix and installed and worked perfectly immediately. Keep up the great work! I really appreciated the ease of this app and how it immediately enabled me to install apps I had waiting on standby.
dont be so mean his app is a great time saver and its noob friendly so quit gettin but hurt just, cuz u didnt think of it first!

As we all know that there is not many developers for this photon 4g like other mobile phones ..
so i think that if there are not developers for the photon 4g then photon will die soon
what u say about this ??????
only way my photon is dying is if i forget to plug it in
I Just want to know what the hell it is you people expect?
20, 30 Roms? That all use a slightly different deodexed base? and have a different set of icons or themes? And all introduce a new set of crap that only partially works?
I mean really - there are only so many things you can do to a rom before they all become the same damn thing with a different name and "dev".
Most of what I see out there is a guy tweaking his phone, removing bloat ware, claiming "ZOMG Battery and Speed!", dumping /system into a Zip file and that someone else made and posting it for someone else to flash to their phone
Want to learn how to do it?
Flash aliens rom, tweak it how you like it, add some icons and themeing (the brunt of the work).
adb pull /system/ C:\Users\Username\Desktop
Click to collapse
Copy all of that into Aliens Zip file, post it is a rom for people to flash - almost 0 effort to do anything but the art - which you can steal from just about anyone online and call it a "port".
/rant
That was just rude. .. this is best phone but when you compare Bionic and stupid 3d threads...well i see what he means ...and Roms are not usually the same.. Some have performance tweaks...like 4g on unlocked bootloader. Speed increase, themes and mods.. Nothing wrong with him trying to get or rally development support like some of the inferior phones have. Remember, this is a development site...

Not a function of the Rom - Lockfish (I think?) has just been able to figure out how to fix it outside of the issue with the bootloader.
I'm not being rude - I was being honest, but there is a thread at least every other day talking about how lack luster our dev section is. This IS a development forum - and I showed him (really basically) how to make a rom. No?
Honestly, when you get 5 or 6 different roms out there - there are enough similarities between them and not enough differences that there really isn't much of a point. 99% of what most people experience from ROM to ROM is placebo.
It appears both the OP and Kcarp were both in the wrong on this one, and for this reason:
OP - Phone development will progress only as fast as sources are released. This phone is still new enough to where developers are still waiting on critical components to really be able to customize this phone. Do not expect this forum to jump off like an HTC (insert model here) forum, but instead, anticipate seasoned developers finding and introducing mods, tweaks and more efficient ways to unlock the bootloader over the coming weeks/months.
Kcarp - C'monnnn man, you're better than that rant. You've been around long enough (hell, I remember ya from the Hero days) to know that these types of threads pop up weekly, and sometimes it's best just to ignore them. I know you meant well, but the last thing we want to do is scare off future developers from posting here as this phone gets older, when so many are leaving XDA as it is.
I am also getting sick of these whiny threads. This phone gets close to the battery life of my evo shift running a cm7 clone, locks gps about 100x's faster and gets a better data and call signal everywhere. My phone is stock rooted with no bloatware touched. It may take some time but even IF development never goes far with this phone, i'd still be happy with it.

This phone is Damn near the Best you are going to get out of the box. All those other phones NEED Rom's to run as good as our phone does Out Of The Box. Moto has updated this phone 3x in less than 2 months ALREADY (it would take Sammy 2 years to update the SGS2 3x). There is a rumor I have seen that Moto is working on ANOTHER update for this Amazing phone.
I could careless if I get ROM's or not. It works Great for me as is. I was lucky enough to get Grand Fathered into Unlimited Mobile Hotspot Data since I have been a customer since 1997 and spoke with a Retentions Manager (Politely) and she took care of me). No 5G Cap for me and my area is 4G Saturated. Use the Hotspot for my Xoom, HP Touchpad and Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0. I am Very, Very Happy with this phone.
Had the OG EVO before this phone and was putting ROM's/Kernels on it all the time (last one was Synergy SC2). Got tired of that. It's nice to just have a phone that WORKS like it's supposed to without ROM's.
Nothing wrong with the photon... quit crying

Big +1 here. Epic 4g needed roms just to last a day on battery and to be fast enough to keep up with certain applications. Problem with the ROMs is that even journaled, they'd get buggy after a few weeks, or there would be just something about a ROM that would annoy me. Once it got dual boot capability I was flashing ROMs left and right. It got to be where I was flashing ROMs just to flash ROMs, like I forgot other ways to kill boredom.
I don't feel an immediate need to flash ROMs. If CM7 comes stable to the photon I'll probably try it just to see what the fuss is about. However, I'm more interested in eventual ICS. I'm happy for root because of Titanium backup and other such things that you need root to run. The battery is great, and it's plenty fast enough. There is one thing about this phone that no ROM could give me on the Epic 4g... the ability to make a phone call at work. The antenna is far superior.

Hey all,
I am switching frm BB to android and am quite excited for it. I ordered note for at&t frm amazon.com for 200$$...seems to be a good price.
Now being completely new to the android world and to the world of rooting, flashing, etc. I would appreciate some help or opinions.
After reading various forums and threads, the first things I will do after getting my device is to root it. I will use rootgalaxynote dot com for that.
Next comes upgrading to ICS. This is where I am confused. There are so many versions, how do you guyz figure out which one is the best or the latest. It was soo easy in blackberry, there was a linear numbering system where 7.1 is better than 7.0 and so on. But in adroid, there are sooo many different names like onlyone, noteworthy, cm9, saurom...how to choose one and which one is the latest ?
Next, I have to enable free tethering to my laptop. I had this app on my BB from tether.com, but I don't know which app to use on Note and how to make it work. Any help will be highly appreciated.
Lastly, it would be gr8 if you could let me know what more to do to make my note more useful and efficient with good signal strength and battery life. Also recommendations for the must-have apps would be great.
Thank you.

First off...Welcome.
All of the names you listed are ROMs. They all run on the latest ICS leak 4.0.4. But since you're new to android, Id recommend stock ICS.
The latest ICS leak is called UCLE2. If you want to try it out stock ICS first before flashing roms, you need to download the ICS UCLE2 leaked "tar" file. http://www.ponack.net/designgears/leaks/SGH-I717UCLE2_74A55FA71D15964F9EC9E9489B34DE4E.exe
Be sure to download this file from your computer, not your phone.
I ffound some instructions on how To do it. Make sure you READ it atleast 5 times before actually doing it. ALSO, Be sure to have all the files you need before attempting. If you get confused, search it up on XDA...as most people have already posted it. If not, don't hesitate to ask.

I would have to advise waiting a while.
1. Keep in mind what it means to root a phone. You are giving yourself the highest access and control priveleges on your devise and remaining at that privelage level from here on out. In the IT world this is actually a huge nono for security. Look at what you are downloading. What does the app want for permissions? Why does a live wallpaper need full network access ? Why does it need to be able to keep the phone from sleeping? Malware for android is on the rise but a rooted phone is by far the most vulnerable. With android, the security of our devises rests on us not being brain dead like iFail users. In return we get nearly unlimited potential on what can be ran on our phones.
2. People forget that this is xda DEVELOPERS. If you are expecting a 100% polished and refined product without hickups here and there then you are in the wrong place. Yes the roms are fantastic. We have some real talent working on the galaxy note but don't expect the moon.
3. Don't start trying to root and flash until you are comfortable with the terminology that gets tossed around. If you don't know what CWM stands for then you haven't studied enough. Guides to accomplish flashing and rooting exist but trying to follow along with no concept of what is going on can lead to a lot of frustration if not disaster. If you don't understand why you need to do something, don't do it.

i know you're eager but enjoy your stock rom for a while. also you may not appreciate the responses you will get asking these most basic of questions. all of them have answers easily available in these subforums either by browsing or the search function. those questions have been answered 1000+ times so dont be suprised when no one jumps to give you the answers. this is xda DEVELOPERS (i.e. advanced users) not Noobs 'r Us. have fun learning as we all did.
Just got the OTA update popup. Have looked around and it seems like user impressions are generally pretty favorable so far.
Aside from the update breaking root access (I'm staying stock, so not a deal-breaker for me), has anyone found any fatal flaws (app incompatibility, data loss/corruption, etc.) that might be a reason to NOT install the update?
Right now, there is a work around the b loader to gain root. If u take the update, you winn not be able to root as u know.
That might not mean much to you right now. But let's say you see something like the expanded mini menu, and you want it. Well, you won't be able to root and install Xposed.apk after taking the ota until an exploit is discovered.
Leave the update to the rubes who are less then passionate about the freedom we have or ota.
Btw, apps to sd is any able to move the apk to sd but not the working app and it's data.
See below the pick of the expanded mini menu...

Many thanks for all the responses. I did root my last phone and enjoyed the freedoms that brought. Would like to eventually root this phone, and I'm hoping that when I'm ready to do it there'll be a solution available for me, but if not it won't be the end of the world.
What I didn't want to do was the worst of both worlds: Apply the OTA and hate it, AND not be able to root.
Sounds like I won't end up in that spot, so I'll give it a shot.

Why devalue your phone for some stupid update?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Most people figure out by around the second grade that different people place different values on different things. One example of this is that there are about a zillion versions of Android and a zillion different versions of Android phones to use them on.
Right now, what I value is a stock S4. You value the phone differently. We can both have what we want. Isn't that nice?
You learned something today. Hooray!

I am here because there are very knowledgable people here who push their devices to the limit. Many of these people also have friends or spouses with the same hardware but still in a stock configuration, and thus are in tune with the quirks in the stock software. Indeed, I got two helpful responses, so that alone justifies my asking the question here. Besides, there are plenty of questions on this general Q&A forum that have nothing to do with android development. "What case are you using?" "What extended battery is best?" Etc.
I rooted my last device and ran a variety of custom roms on it for almost two years. There were pros and cons to that experience. I expect that one day, if rooting my S4 is an option, I will want to do that, but I'm not ready to do it yet.
Is that really such a bizarre and alien situation that no one could possibly comprehend it? What is there about it that deserves derision or insult?

It's not bizarre or alien. Just an odd place to ask the question. The fact remains, you are on one of the websites that pioneered root access and spawned countless custom ROM's, Mods and Apps. You come to this website to discuss how you don't need root and are going stock and have no need of root & then you don't like the answers that the very same people who value root and push the limit of their phones give. If it were any other "development website" or chat channel you would be banned as a troll and no one would waste anymore time than they already have.

NEVER AGAIN"
Maybe some negative pressure will make them rethink.

Those developers that got a free Mate 2 are our only hope now.
I guess that's why they gave them out. "Can you guys make ROMs for us? We're too lazy."

Huawei is basically saying "you're on your own" to anyone who received a device as a devloper. That's not a great position... It's a pretty solid slap in the face. My first thought as a developer is "ok, they are out, why would I bother". I'd cut more slack if the device was 18-24 months old but they are pushing this as their flagship currently and an alternative to the more expensive phablets on the market. Even Samsung provides "reasonable" support for "old" flagships better than this.
The crazy thing is the hardware should be more than able to keep up with 4.4/5.0. Unless they are jumping right to 5.0 this move makes 0 sense to me.
Modding. Mymind and xordos with my continual softbrick testing have managed to port a pretty much fully working TWRP onto my MT2-L05 device and I have uploaded a decrypted 4.4.2 rom for my Mate 2 in this forum, so why don't we collectively try and port it to your device, any help you need that are within my skillset I will happily provide....just a thought.. .... Download the rom I posted and see what you can come up with.. ..... .

Does Huawei use a tool like RSD or Odin for system images or are devs stuck with manual disk images and the like via recovery?
Hmm, I was thinking about getting one of these, now I'm having doubts. If we only
get third party firmware, would I still be able to run software which will not run with root access ?
Have any of those developers who received the free phones mentioned their intentions?

Right now I'd hold off. Buy something else. The operating system on this phone is already a year old. Support for things like Android wear etc will be questionable in 6 months.
If Huawei doesn't update it's phones you should go with something else. Just my opinion.

I saw the blog post on my G+ feed earlier today. I'm not really shocked, but it still really feels like a kick in the teeth.
I'm not sure what kind of luck we'll have getting a custom KK/LP Rom running on this phone. Usually the manufacturer-provided ROM is used as a baseline for other modifications to be made. If we were to spin our own AOSP Rom, could we even find the drivers and kennel modules to make everything work?
Where do we go from here?

The kernel is up on one of the hosted Huawei sites. A quick once over at the BABBQ indicated it's a fairly vanilla Qualcomm 3.4 kernel with some Huawei bits sprinkled in. Shouldn't be much of an issue for 4.4. getting a 3.10 kernel up for 5.0 will be trickier and is a big question mark as 5.0 isn't officially released just yet. At the BABBQ we also discovered they didn't implement all of the modem modes in the ROM. Another developer told me they might take a closer look but gave no detail for timing.
I've been tinkering with adb backups, titanium and xposed lately and I'm not liking the stock ROM much. They omitted large chunks of the adb backup stuff rendering apps like Helium useless, the SD cards don't come through to the root context properly forcing you to enable a compatibility flag in SuperSU in order to make titanium work and apktool and other standard tools choke nicely on the system apks. I had to fall back to running the smali decompiler by hand to find the right hooks in SystemUI for a simple xposed hack.
Adding to the fun their version of Settings.apk is missing a number of standard features which you can only adjust via Tasker/SecureSettings or by hand behind the scenes. They also didn't implement encrypted storage in the vold storage stuff so you're screwed in an enterprise setting.
Based on what I've seen thus far a source based build is almost necessary if you want everything android has to offer. However, vetting a ROM to ensure various new functionality is 100% will be a pain.
Huawei left out a lot and the lack of 4.4 is a serious kick in the teeth.
Horrible
I just purchased this phone from amazon on July. I wouldn't mind the no update but I want to get a google watch in the next few months so I'm not very happy about this announcement. For some odd reason, Amazon is still letting me return this phone so I'm thinking of returning the phone. What is another phone that I can get at this price range?

You can use Huawei's Hi-Suite software to flash roms to phone from pc. You can also pack roms up into Huawei's update format and flash them in quick update mode from your phone's external sd card, or you can install via recovery.
I bought mine on September 29 (didn't get it until early October) through the gethuawei site. I wonder if I can return it... I'll find out when there livechat is live today, the 29th of October.
After just one minor OTA update they officially announce no additional updates for their only US device... That's a deal breaker for me.
Damn, I was just about to buy this phone. Does anyone know of any good alternatives in Canada?

Not surprised , saw this coming from the early start . Thing is , there is no alternative with these features / size at the 299$ price tag . There are phones like the ZTE nubia / moto g / Blu products / etc but they don't hold a candle to this phablet . On another note , I've customized my phone to the max and i don't need a major OS update . Just me , this phone runs perfectly for my use . Fine if they just push minor OS fixes via OTA . Developers can be our saviours ! Let's not forget this isn't really a flagship ! You're paying for the experience as created/intended at the time . Let's wait and see

Well, not a new user of HTC, but root wise, I'm new. I was originally going to covert over but my device soft bricked.
I'm running deoxed stock ATT 4.4.2, s-on (maybe s-off in future, but not now) with root. Didn't know this rom was pre-rooted but ok, bonus I guess after my phone was soft-bricked for 2-3 days. Props to the skydragon and the community for helping me out on my error.
Back to the main point: any root apps you guys recommend? Haven't been on the rooted side of things in 1-3 years, kind of worried that some apps that were useful, aren't so much because of dropped support (ie: setcpu). I remember xposed being brand new when I left the rooted scene for a new phone.
Thanks for the help in advance.
Try Titanium Backup, and Better Battery Stats.
Xposed is in fact pretty powerful, with some nice modules. In particular the Sense Toolbox. But it can be a bit finicky.
Titanium is a must, IMO.
Adaway and similar ad-killers are also nice to have. You won't find them on the Play Store anymore, but can get the direct from the developers.

Just got Titanium and Sense Toolbox. Very nice. And do the ad killers work on in-app ads?

Yup. That is the main purpose. Might not work for every app with ads, but certainly works on many of them.
You can get Adaway from here, https://f-droid.org/. You'll need to download, and install the .apk. in order to install the .apk, you will need to enable Unknown sources in the Security tab in settings.

Seems good to me. Thanks.
Xposed enables some powerful mods, but most of the mods I tried did not work on a stock rooted AT&T M8 One, and even fewer have worked on it with the Wonders_Never_Cease ROM. For example, the Exchange Security Bypass doesn't work with stock, and the HTC Tweaker doesn't work with the newer ROM.
Of course that's not a problem with XPosed; more that the mods themselves are very specific to the ROM their running on, so matching them all is way beyond most hobby developers. Just be aware that most mods will not work; you just have to try and hope.
If so unpleased with "mods" not working, find the correct builds they were made for and use it or flash a specialised tweaked build that gives you what you want...In very first post of thread it states if your wanting mods etc to not even bother flashing,no need to point out a specific rom or developer in any posts.Have a good day.

Wow, sensitive enough? I didn't say I was displeased and I certainly didn't blame the ROM or the dev (you.) I even sent you money a few weeks ago. I was merely pointing out that the mods are extremely version specific.
Not sensative at all, I dont point [email protected] any roms/devs...just asked another of the users not to point fingers as well(can check posts...lol) has nothing to do with being sensative, just a common respect I try to keep towards other devs and thier work,No worries....:good:
