Hi all,
I have a mini pro/U20i running Eclair, specs as follows;
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Baseband: M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404006
Kernel: 2.6.29
Build no: 2.0.A.0.504
Rooted, xrecovery installed
I'm looking to upgrade to the latest stable android version available for my phone, but must admit the in-depth tech talk does go over my head a little when looking at the ROM threads. I have enough tech savvy to be able to flash etc, but not too great with the programming speak.
I'd like to ensure that bluetooth, wireless, root, gprs etc are all 100% working on the ROM I upgrade to. Not bothered about radio or anything you can get an alternative of from the market.
From what I've seen gingerbread is available but not yet 100% functional, and I know there are stable Froyo versions available however the requirements state the baseband as above, but ending in 53404015 is required.
Is there considerable risk flashing a ROM if my baseband is slightly different?
I'm particularly looking for stable multitouch too, but the thread I read says manual edit of .sh and .prop files must be done - and I don't know how to do this
Dev and user opinions would be muchly appreciated.
Hi you will need the newer baseband just update with seus then you will need to reroot and install xrecovery again then once you have done that go to this thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059361 ) its the most stable I think and dual touch is included so no messing around
Hope this helps you

just use the flasher and baseband files from the baseband thread. much faster and easier than using seus and rooting again. just put the rom you want on with xrec, pull the battery out, flash, and youre done! shouldnt take more than 10 minutes once you know what youre doing!
For me, using SEUS is safer, even if I have to root and install xRecovery again.
I you want the most stable ROM with all functions working, you have to choose CM6-MiniCM hybrid noOC from Slade.
I'm using that ROM since he released it and never had a reboot, and everything is working.
If you have stock rom, you should format SD card.

yeah using SEUS is better... and you can reflash after you update using it....
after root and xrec, just make a backup on xrec so you can reflash to 2.1 back... and dont waste time on reflash+root+xrec again.... i did that save lots of time
ps: make sure full wipe+dalvic clear before restore backup... ^^

Yeah, I did it too, but never needed that backup I flashed with SEUS last, when I first updated to slade's ROM

Cyanogen Froyo CM6-Latest (based on MiniCM/CM6v2) - v2.0 + DualTouch is the most stable ROM for me. Just flash using SEUS or flasher to get the required baseband.
I recommend using the flasher because it helps you understand the flashing process. Just follow the tutorial.
Thanks for all your help guys, that's helped me out no end
I am now the proud owner of an x10mp android 2.2.1 (went with Slade's ROM - big thumbs up, it's beautiful!!)
I have one final question.. when I installed the last ROM I had, I used flashtool, so doing it with xrec was a new experience for me... I did notice that before it installed the rom, it said 'formatting /system' or words to this effect.
I need to install the two hotfixes that are posted with the rom - the drain and browser ones... do I package the files within these zips into an update.zip and run again from xrec or can I transfer the updated system files just using root explorer? I'm worried that xrec will take the update.zip as a full rom and will delete the contents of my system folder - please reassure me this isn't the case and it will just update with newer files!
MANY thanks again for your help and advice!

Just use each from xrec, it will replace some file but it won't format your system, only the big release file does that (100MB++).

It depends what formatted, deleted or owerwrited on update script. Don't worry, slade knows what he's doing
Anyway DON'T TRY TO FORMAT YOUR SYSTEM WITHOUT INSTALLING NEW ROM!!!
Just always follow install notes and everything will be fine.

Right then, an update (excuse the pun!)
I followed SEUS to get the xx 4015 baseband
I flashed Slade's noOC rom and then hotfixes using xrecovery
I now have a happy 2.2.1 android mini pro with multitouch!
At first, it was a little slow and I had a few blank screens and FCs....
Screen brightness was very low even when I was actively using the phone, so I unchecked the auto display option and set a brightness I'm happy with. Sorted!
With Titanium I restored my backups, including my wifi connections. Saves having to re-enter all the passwords right? Wrong!
I had a number of connection issues. Data was very slow, to slow to even register my google account on market. Wifi wouldn't load market or bring up anything in the browser...
When I did establish a fast enough data connection, market was completely out of sync with my phone apps.
Turns out the data connection just needed to 'warm up' along with the new android system. As for the wifi, I removed all my connections with the 'forget' option, and manually scanned and entered the passwords again. Now my wifi flies
So all in all, a very smooth upgrade process, a couple of hiccups with the data/wifi and brightness that have been ironed out, and now I am loving my new android again. The multitouch is very slick and having superuser, jit and xrec preinstalled is just brilliant! Games are lag free too which makes a big difference (yep, I'm an Angry Bird club member)
Think I've made my iphone user hubby a bit jealous. I like to remind him every now and then that apple have him by the balls, and he has to buy a whole new phone to do any update such as the one I've just done (again )
The battery drains a little quicker than on the previous rom, but I expect that will settle down after a few days. One thing I have noticed is that I'm repeatedly ending apps with ATK that I hadn't even opened - on my last rom I'd never see anything that I hadn't opened myself.
An example being, just opened ATK and I have the following running;
APN OnOff
Gmail
Maps
None of these I've opened since I last ran ATK Other repeat offenders are Browser, google search and camera,
Any ideas? WhatsApp used to open randomly until I moved it to the SD card. It's behaving itself now.
Don't need to use taskkillers in 2.2.1, android handles battery quite efficiently.
Battery increase is due to overclocking and because it's a custom rom.
Hope that helps.

My battery life has stabilised now. Took phone off charge about 8.30 am and now, 1.30pm it's at 83%, so can't complain
I find apps such as maps and google voice/search do drain the memory quite a bit so still prefer to use atk. Just opened atk to find I have;
maps
handcent
apn OnOff
gmail
google voice
ROM manager (I've never opened this since installing the rom)
calendar
camera
all running and memory at 41M. Killed apps and memory now at 71M
Is there a way to stop these apps from randomly running? Apart from a calendar alert for today, I haven't manually opened anything from the list
cheers,
K
Sorry for ignorance:
Can I flash a rom and do all the nec. stuff from Ubuntu? Or will I need Window$ to flash a mini pro?

It's normal to have applications taking up memory. It is so that it will be speedy in opening those apps so try not to use a taskkiller. The only time these idle apps use battery is when there is CPU usage: so check with your spare parts. If they don't use CPU, no need to kill.
If you're insistent that the apps are frustratingly persistent, then freeze the app using titanium backup. Note that freezing certain system apps may cause problems eg freeze google talk and market won't work.
Try at your own risk.

Hey guys,
I have been getting so many PM's and I am sorry not to be able to answer all of them. Most of the questions I got were from people who could not post in Dev Forum and most of the questions were the same. So I would like you all to post here as most users can help you since I cannot answer every single PM.
To all the users who already know an issue please help the people to fix it.
Please keep it organized so I would like to introduce a pattern:

ROM: Cyanogen Froyo CM6-Latest (based on MiniCM/CM6v2) - All working! + Hotfix v1.1
Question: Do i need second partition in SD card to install this? Or i can have only one partition and also will be able to move apps to sd card.
Thank you.
Solution to Post 2:
You won't need any second partition to move apps, I even recommend not using any other partition cause froyo does a good job with this!
ROM: MiniCM v1.1

Question: Is this ROM undervolted (battery life is most important for me) if not, is it possible to undervolt it easy way (through xrec for example)
Question2: does your hotfixes install through xrec?
Question3: Can we expect a full build with all hotfixes + ldpi fix included soon?
Solution to Post 4:
Q1: The overclocked version is also undervolted if you want stock and undervolted set it to 600 MHz with setcpu (on boot). The not OCed version is not undervolted but i'll add this maybe later
Q2: Yes all hotfixes on first post will always be xrec flashable only thing is to keep the order while flashing so hotfix1 first and then flash hotfix2 and so on.
Q3: Yes but for now the changes have been to small for me to upload another full release
ROM: MiniCMv1.2

Question: What's the best and fastest way to backup your contacts, cause it's the only thing i want to transfer to this ROM after i update.
Sorry for making so many different posts with questions, not all of them came to my mind at the same time
Solution to Post 6:
Download MyPhoneExplorer in market and download myphoneexplorer for pc enable usb debugging and connect your phone via usb open myphoneexplorer and mini pro and pc and sync contacts.
Install rom and download myphoneexplorer from market again and sync with pc again. all contacts, sms, calls, calendar can now be restored.

Question: Hi, I'm new on XDA. Your job is very impressive. I need a little help.
I already installed xRecover, but every time I try to install the rom I got the following error:
Output from Recovery.log
Code:
-- Installing: SDCARD:update.zip
Finding update package...
I:Update location: SDCARD:update.zip
Opening update package...
I:Update file path: /sdcard/update.zip
minzip: Missed a local header sig (at 16)
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
Mount /dev/block/mtdblock0 on /system read-only
I've tried using install Update.zip option, also with install custom zip. Same output for both and for the original filename too. Also checked the MD5 of the file and it was ok. Later I downloaded [ROM] Cyanogen Gingerbread CM7 Final Sources (v13.0 + Hotfix #2) and I installed it without problems. Now I don't know what could be the problem. I googoled a lot about this but no one has a final answer.
Any help would be great
ROM: MiniCMv1.3
Question: I've been using this ROM almost for a day now, it's really impressive. Everything is very stable and works fine. There is only one thing, some apps are not installing from Stock market. For example Angry birds. I don't really need it, but i think it's related to the size of the app so it might come up in other big applications, cause every smaller app downloads and installs fine. Then i try to download and install it, it just starts downloading and disappears after few seconds. Deleting all cache files helps for one time, then you need to delete it again and install another big application. Is there any way to fix it without deleting the cache file?
Bug: Well this is not really a bug, just wanted to say that this ROM has really weak reception, at least until i tried your 1.4hotfix. Where i had 0 blocks i now have 2, and where i had 2 i have 4, so this hotfix definitely works for me. Thank you.
Bug2: Maybe it's just me but keyboard light is on everytime you open it, doesn't matter if it's dark or not. As far as i remember it worked differently in stock rom (maybe i'm wrong).
For the people who are asking about battery life. I have observed how much battery does it use in standby mode. And with almost the same settings as in Stock 2.1 i managed to get about 2hours with 1% of battery. It's still a bit worse than stock where i got about 3.5hours with 1%. I just recently installed reception hotfix and will try to observe the battery life now, i think i'll manage to reach about 3hours with 1%. Gona inform you all later about this.
Solution to post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13422864&postcount=9
You could move some of the larger apps on to the SD card by going to settings/applications/manage applications, select the application you want to move and select move to SD. This will make more space on the phones flash memory allowing you to download larger apps from the market. Some apps won't allow you to move them to the SD card but most seem to allow it so try a few.
I've never had this problem so can't say for sure but it seems an intuitive fix.
Cheers
Giro

translate to another languages
Hi Slade,
Nice work! Is there a way to translate (for my girlfriend) not translated parts. Some general way to do it? Thank you for your patience with us!
ROM: MiniCMv1.4, but Gingerbread too (is it different?)
language: Slovak
ROM: Cyanogen Gingerbread CM7 Final Sources
Bug(s): Only know problems: reboot, camera and radio
But i can use without problem.
Your work is great!
Thanks
ROM: Cyanogen Gingerbread CM17 Final Sources v13
Bug(s): Camera App is in some kind of asian language (yeah i know its listed that the app is buggy but maybe its helpfull), the radio and Barnacle keeps crashing when _stop_ it, if its on it works fine, all my devices can connect but when i switch it off, my U20i reboots. Also sometimes my U20i freezes for a few seconds, but no reboot.
Other stuff works fine, awesome rom!

I think iI may have broke my Android Market!
Can still access the Market, but when I try and download an app, its shows the downloading progress bar and then just does nothing. It worked before.
I have been zapping a load of apps recently using Titanium Backup, could that have broke my downloading abilities?
Got a feeling it may be some of the google apps I removed, like google talk, even though I never use them.
Could anyone point me in the right direction to the x10 mini 2.1 stock app .apks?
Much appreciated
Maybe it's what you done with Titanium backup.
Try this first :
Go to Settings -> Applications -> "Menu" button -> Select "All". Then search Android market, clic on, and now clic on "Force stop" first, then "Wipe cache" and "Wipe data" ! Then reboot your phone and check if it's working
If it don't work, reflash your phone using SEUS !

This should be stickied but NEVER, EVER, EVER freeze, delete or even look at any of the Google Apps (any of the apps that say "Google..."), those apps are necessary in order for the system to work correctly, so by removing Google Talk you basically broke your Market.
Just restore a backup (if you have one), reflash the Google Apps or reflash your entire ROM, because I don't think there's a way to reinstall Google Talk.
Okay, looks like I'll have to start from scratch again then.
If I reinstall Android using the sony software, I take it I will lose all apps and root?
I think in future I'll avoid removing bloatware
Yeah, flashing the Sony ROM will wipe your phone clean, but hey it's not that hard to root and flash a custom ROM, just look around for tutorials and you'll be good to go
Was looking at the minicm6 rom, but can't really see the pro's outweighing the con's on using a custom rom. From what I understand, some things like camera and wireless are buggy.
Think I'll stick to the official 'stable' 2.1

Actually, MiniCM6 1.0.0 is pretty much stock ROM stable and has all the functionality of it, I use it every day and it works perfectly, what you have to weigh in the pro/cons is MiniCM7 as the Camera is still stuck on 640x480 instead of 5MP.
Right, flashed minicm6 rom, loaded and run okay, but just didn't like it.
Flashed back to stock 2.1 using sony software, everything back to normal, marking downloading again
On;y thing now is when I plug my phone into computer, it doesn't give the option to install pc companion anymore, just charge or connect. Not that I'm really too bothered though...
Hello, I'm a new member here. Been reading for the past few days on this forum and I have a few questions.
First of all I have my phone for a month now and I got fed up with the little internal space, so about 4 days ago I decided to Root my phone with the "upd_1.zip" file. After that I flashed the CWM4 on it and whiped my battery data.
I meanwhile bought titanium backup also and moved few not so essential apps to the sd card via titanium backup (im not sure if this creates the needed partition on the SD card or not though? do i need to do it proprerly or is it good as is?)
To get to the point:
My main problem is that the phone since it got rooted started to "forget" it's settings... mainly what bugs me is the Contacts get unlinked every time i reboot the phone, accounts get unlinked, my adw launcher forgets it's theme (this also happens without reboot), my yahoo email doesn't notify me properly, and apps in general don't seem to work properly anymore... (i also thought it might be from the app move to sd card, but i left the launcher for example on the phone, also haven't touched the contacts app...so i don't know)
How can I fix this? Will a new ROM help me fix these problems?
If yes, can you recommend me any good roms? I was looking a lot at cyanogen mod and ice cream sunday, but i cannot decide which one to get because i'm not sure which one is the most stable one of them?
What matters most for me in a rom is probably to be stable without too many bugs, to run flash if possible and to be more responsive than my current stock 2.3.3 rom. I don't really use the stock apps/gps stuff either, except maybe the youtube app, camera and the market app
My other request is please someone write down how to install a damn rom for noobs without any abreviations because the developers' install description is really vague and abstract in many cases (for the Cyanogen mod or ICSunday please)
My phone runs:
S5840XWKP6
kernel
2.6.35.7-perf-CL313173
[email protected]#1
GB.XWKPJ
Thanks, Joker
Hello Mate
Whatever custom ROM you flash to will have a bug or two but they aren't anything serious thats just the thing with custom Rom's.
Installing Rom's is very easy as long as your phone is rooted (as you have already done) and you have CWM (clockwork mod recovery tool 5.xx not 4.xx) as you have said. There is a problem with CWM 4.xx with the Galaxy Ace it tends not to work properly.
All Rom's are downloaded from links on this website, copied to your SD card as a zip file (which it's downloaded as) then applied by using the CWM tool which appears in your apps after you have installed it.
There are lots of step by step instructions of how to do this just google "how to root galaxy ace" or "how to install CWM 5" or "how to install custom ROM" do you get my drift?
I'm using custom Ice cream sunday CM7.2 from the development section of this forum. It's fast got only what you need in a Rom and has hardly any bugs.
Do some reading my friend i've flashed my phone about 50 in the 2 months i've had it just testing ROM's but i like the one i have now.
Cool, thanks for the reply mate, do u have any idea about the problem i'm having lately by losing my settings?
I was asking for the how to flash guide because of statements like these:
"then install zip
after install, go through set up then set oc if you use and any other settings then reboot."
which makes no sense to me, go through what set up and what's an OC... and what other settings?.... get my drift?
And i'm currently downloading "theMyth" rom to test out... hope it turns out, it'll be my first custom rom
If your using clock work mod 4, it's not saving anything because it doesn't work with the galaxy ace i only found out after it messed up my phone and of course the back up of my settings didn't work!
OC means over clocked cpu application, yes you can over clock the cpu just the same as a pc or laptop make it run faster etc but it's not advised unless you know what your doing or you could fry it.
You definately need CWM 5 installed before you go flashing any new roms. Also have a good read of the reviews for a ROM before you try it etc that gives you all the info you need to know if you will get on with it or not.
uhm yeah... just flashed themyth on my phone and redownloaded titanium backup and it doesn't show up on my apps list, wtf
Make sure your installing apps to your phone and not your SD card??
Also check CWM has changed to version 5xx etc.
still if i would be installing to my sd card shouldn't it show up on my app draws or whatever it's called? on market i don't have "open" option only "uninstall"
Ahh yes i had this problem. Some custom roms need google apps (gapps) installed for your phone to receive stuff from the market.
Do you see the Andriod Market App? Can you sign in?
this is what i was telling you earlier depending on whos Rom you are installing depends what things they've taken out or left in. If it's taken out you have to download some or the apps again to get other things to work.
yup... i redownloaded it from the market, but "open" wouldn't show up, luckily i had the app on my dropbox too and i managed to start the restore apps on it now, im curious what happens when restore will finish
it worked afterall, im happy atm
cool mate you will learn alot by trying different roms but the basic process for flashing is always the same.
Hi guys!
I've been reading your comments on this thread and now i have a lot of questions!:
1) I have installed 4.0.0.9 but according to cooltt it's better CWM 5.x.x, how i can install it now?
2) I thought like jokerman170 to install TheMythICS but now i seeing that he has had problems, how you solved it? Which version you downloaded?
thanks in advanced!!
u can flash it just like the 4, i don't really like this rom, looks like a stupid theme and i got 256 rating on quadrant :| wtf
i downlaoded the TheMyth beta 2 full
icsunday2 here i come
icsunday2 it's difficult to install for a newbie like me and some people have had problems with this rom.
Why TheMyth is bad?
sorry for my english
it wasn't too fast and was kinda buggy and low quality imo, ICSunday is cool, but can't really log onto my wi-fi yet, working on it now
EDIT: worked with second try, really impressed with ICS2 atm
Okay mate
Ok guys thing is installing icsunday is not tough but u didn't understand what to do.mmmmm use cwm 5 for icsunday and icsunday2 is best rom ever.

plzzzz hit thanks if I helped you in any means .......
i did use the 5, cause the Myth rom upgrades it for you
Btw could you check out my other thread that i just started.... im kind of a retard...
hi. after a long wait, I decided to upgrade my xperia x10 to gingerbread android. it looks cool, but it became reeeeally slow. everything is slow, from switching home screens to playing games. but the main problem is when i try to listen some music. i get a break every 10 seconds or so. it is so annoying!
I upgraded manually to 2.3.3 because the update was never available for me (I'm in brazil, and heard something about SE having to upgrade themselves, that you had to send them your handset so their techs would upgrade it) so since that's just stupid, i did it myself. along with it i rooted my phone, and installed recovery thing.
since 2.3.3 was really slow, i googled and found the jit enabler thing. installed it with the xrecovery and my phone wouldn't boot anymore. so i had to flash 2.3.3 again, this time i cleared everything, rooted again and everything. it's still very slow, i installed task killers and everything i could to improve performance, but 2.1 was way faster. songs are a little better now, but still annoying.
what to do now?
ty
Flash Fps uncap, it will boost your speed dramatically, also flash the music stutter fix
Sent from my X10i using xda premium
I had the same problem when I upgraded to 2.3.3, very laggy, even installed Jit enabler and got it stuck on SE logo, had to reinstall the rom again too. I'm using a custom rom and it's a very different phone now...fast no lag. You've rooted your phone, maybe it's time to take the next logical step.
Away from stock
Above poster has it right, try installing another's ROM now, WB has it down i think. You can also try a different Launcher( i use Launcher Pro) and a different Music app( i use Poweramp) use TB to remove all unwanted apps. move all your pictures and video, media, to SD card, but ensure your SD card isn't too big or too full, sometime an SD card with too much junk on it will slow everything down, such as with an sd card that is bigger then 16MB or a cheap one.
flash FPS as the others said, or just go and root it straight ahead and flash a rom. they are pretty stable by now without any probs! i use Donut HD and i had NO problems at all!

Send from beneath my cloak of magic
Hi
I installed this great rom but cannot enable wifi. After few seconds of "enabling" it stops and says "error".
Someone suggested cleaning memory - not helped
Tried this :

And

Nothing changed.
Please help, i dont want to revert to stock ****ty firmware.
You could think of moving to something newer, like ArcMini Nxt, which will also run beautifully on the stock kernel.

Try to do a fresh install of the ROM
(Make a backup in Recovery, Flash original firmware, Flash ROM, Check WiFi, do Advanced Restore in Recovery and select Data only)

Wifi on custom ROMs
Hi
I'm at holidays, so I have spare time and i have a backup mobile, so, at last, I've decided migrating my stock to a newer ROM. I just wanted to be able to use multitouch for zooming images/maps/webs, whilst not loosing any functionality. If I can also use a VPN to connect to work via RDP, ald view streaming flash sites... well, that will be a plus. As my mobile version is pretty new i know I can NOT unlock bootloader, so i can't also change my kernel. No problem... there are some ROMs that will bring me my basic needs. I require Androd 2.2 or newer... can't use ICS ROMs (need to change kernel/bootloader, unadvised for my mimmi). Okay, let's see the alternatives:
I've cheked Xperian Blaze v2, SE_Style v1.1, MiniCM7Pro v21, and Andread 2.3.5 Pro final v3
I've had some problems with one and others, but they all had the same issue: Wifi connection was not working. I've tried to ask in the development threads, but i couldn't (not enough messages), so I had to investigate on my own. Not an android developer, just user.
The last ROM I've checked is the Andread. The problem with others was "error" on trying to turn WIFI on, or turning it on but failing on getting IP, disabling the wifi and enabling it again for restarting process. The problem with Andread was slightly different: it made it all fine (establish connection, authentication, get an IP...), but when you want to use network it doesn't work. Seems to be missing routes or something.
I must say I love these ROMs, all of them. Launcher is not a problem, i always install Nemus (love its dock, folders, and ability to resize widgets), although ARC's one is good enough (way better than mimmi's one, despite being sooo similar)
Ok, ok, my solution: I've made a backup of original system before tests, didn't I? ok, lets extract it and see... I've found than /system/lib/Modules/tiwlan_drv.ko was less than 1Mb in my Andread, but 8.7Mb in my original files' backup. Hummm now it isn't working... What would happen if I overwrite it with older one? Lets try it... copy original one (the one in my backup) to SDCard, then use RootExplorer for mounting /system R/W, copy and overwrite Andread's tiwlan.ko, change it's permissions to match original ones (644), and reboot.
Now I have wifi, and my andread is working fine. I still have to recalibrate battery and replace the DroidSansFallback.TTF with the MIUI's one (so I can read my father-in-law chinese messages), but happy enough.
Not sure if it can work with the other ROMs I've cheked before, or with any other mobile. As far as I've seen in this forum, you always talk about the 2.1.1.A.0.6 SE firmware or the newest 2.1.1.C.0.1. I had the 2.1.1.B.0.1 (yes, it's a B). Not sure if it's due I'm in Spain, or my mobile was bought to Yoigo and not Sony... I always assumed the differences will be so minimal it doesn't mind ^_^
I wish this could help someone.
