Samsung Galaxy SII is my first android, Awsome device.... but i have some question i couldnt figure answers for:
1. in settings > Display, what is the difference between Auto brightness and Auto Screen Power?
2. when connected via USB to Kies, then clicking the home button to use the device, how to re-initiate the connection without removing and re plugging the cable!
apologies if repeated questions, but i couldnt find them in threads...

To my understanding, "Auto brightness" only responds to the light conditions (eg, outdoors versus indoors), while "auto screen power" adds another level of brightness adjustment, responding to the image that is on the screen (eg, images with lots of white versus predominantly dark images).

It's either missing for me or I can't find it after updating to 2.1. Any ideas?
They removed it.
My first suggestion would be to use the search function on the forum...

You know, I've seen a million posts just on this forum that say "Auto Brightness is now in the widget" and "Auto Brightness is always on" and now you're the first saying it's gone.

Because if you actually use the widget you will see it isn't "auto" its preset. Off Mid Full.
From what I can see, especially when using outdoors, the brightness level you set in "settings" determines the minimum brightness level.
Whereas, the actual brightness level is equal or higher than the minimum dependent on background light intensity.
Try to test it under sunlight, cover the light sensor then uncover it, should work.
Auto brightness is present. Its on the widget with your wifi settings. The brightness widget has three settings low, auto and high. I have tested it several times and the phone does respond to light and does get brighter. It seems they changed the sense algorithm for it. But it works, just not like it used to.
EDIT:
Here's a quick way to test, if you have desk lamp that's florescent you can set the widget to the the auto setting (second option). Unlock the phone and hold it up close to the light, if done correctly you can even see the text on the phone get gradually brighter. Now quickly cover the sensor and you will see it dim. You can use direct sunlight as well in the same idea.
Didn't see your post kwunshin

Exactly. In the auto setting, you can adjust the maximum level in the settings, like it used to work.
To all those saying it's gone:
PUT IT UNDER A LIGHT! It's not that hard to see for yourself
Use the widget, set it so there is no green bar under the brightness, then press it once.. it will then get brighter on its own in bright light
I've seen that the Xperia S has light ambient sensor, but i cant find the configuration to enable auto screen brightness.
Any idea how can i enable it?
I don't think there is a setting for it there wasn't on my arc either
hmm i have read that the auto brightness function is enabled by default, but i dont notice any brightness changes when i enter to a dark room or go out in the day, auto bright function doesnt seem to work.
Anyone can confirm this?
On my SGS2 with CM9 it is under Settings --> Display --> Brightness.
I dont know where it is under Sony ROMs, but somewhere around Display or Energy Saving maybe it has to be, I couldnt imagine that Sony would take out this...
If you want to test it you could light with a lamp direct in the sensor or cover it, then it has to change the Brightness.
you set the lowest screen brightness you want, then the phone does the rest

Exactly. It works just like the iPhone this way.

Well, if you manually set the brightness to the lowest setting you are gonna get a dark screen. Obvious thing is obvious.
I've recently been to Sony Mobile's headquarters in Redwood, and I got all the details about this explained to me.
The way it works, is that you can manually set a "preferred level" of brightness, and the phone will automatically vary this setting but not stray too far from it. The default value I believe is 50%.. I don't have exact numbers for how much it will differ, but the auto backlighting is there.
I also asked if Sony will add a manual override to this setting in a future FW upgrade, and they said that they might
SEARCH before you post!!! Already discussed (and how to enable it)
It's enabled via the screen brightess toggle. One option is Auto.

Quick question -
I have a rooted HTC DesireHD & sometimes I'd like to use the 'Auto brightness' feature - especially if moving indoors/outdoors quite regularly.
However I've noticed that the screen brightness seems a little 'too' bright compared to how I usually have it (indoors I usually have it ~12%, outdoors ~90%) - In 'auto mode' the 'indoors' seem to be about 20-25%
I pretty sure that there is a way to telling the Android system the level to have the screen depending on how much light the light sensor picks up - but I think that involves editing certain files & 'ADB' command etc (which I'm not totally confident I could do)
Does any1 know of an App (preferably free) that shows the current light level picked up by the phone & the brightness level that's been currently used, which also allows you to alter (& save) a lower value for that light level (perhaps with a slider or value box ??)
Thanks in advance
Well despite 130 views - seems like no-one has any suggestions
Anyway, I persevered with Google play search & it seems I may've found a couple possibilities (Avaliable as 'free' and 'paid for') so I thought I'll post them here in case any1 else wants them
There's Custom Auto Brightness (free) here
AND
Lux Auto Brightness here (Lux has paid version that allows even darker levels of screen display)
I've tried out 'Custom Auto Level' but either I was doing something wrong, but on occasions it would'nt dim the screen in bright light (I tested by shining a torch onto the sensor), however I'm currently trying out the LUX [Free] version to see if it'll do the job
(Took a while to actually figure out that you had to use the 'Link' option to actually SET the brightness of screen to Level of light detected )
In CyanogenMod, I was a fan of the setting that allowed me to "prevent phone's auto brightness from going down".
I like auto brightness and appreciate its ability to save battery life when indoors vs. enabling me to see the phone if I go outside in a high light situation.
However, under florescent lights, or in a room with a definitive light source (single lamp in dark room)... the phone's sensor keeps jumping it between light levels where the screen brightness goes up and down.... up and down... It's a bit dizzying and makes the phone somewhat uncomfortable to use.
Anyone find an app or workaround to automatically achieve what I want... other than... disabling auto brightness when it starts, setting an appropriate brightness level, and then, trying to remember to re-enable later when I'm outside (and of course, have a hard time then seeing the phone )
?
So when you're outdoors, even if it's overcast there's no way to slide the brightness down (It auto-snaps to full brightness) even though it's not needed.
I have situations where i could easily use half brightness but my phone forces auto max light
YES, I know i can disable auto brightness completely, but that would not be convenient.
Any fix for this?
I use an app called Lux. Tons of options with it.

It doesn't actually lower the brightness some sort of overlay , no?

Hmmmm, Im not sure how it works but it does have an auto mode which you can tweak on the fly.
I have noticed that also. It also jacks up the contrast to make it easier to see.
It makes pics you took look terrible when viewing them outside. I had to learn to NOT delete them until I check them indoors. I assumed some pics I took were crap at first, but it was just the jacked screen contrast that made them look bad.
On my S9+ in bright sunlight it happens that not only something happens to the contrast and colors (eg. reds become somewhat pinkish) but also black elements on screen start flickering/smudging while scrolling. It looks like the device turns into some sort of brightness boost mode.
Does anyone else experience anything like that?

That's exactly what happens to me. Also if you slide the screen you can see how it the colors are totally distorted.

Check out the screenshot. There's an option to enable brightness slider in the notification bar. Becomes easier to adjust brightness just by sliding down the notification bar.

Did you read what the problem is? outdoors it snaps to max no matter what. (Unless not in auto mode)
Any solution for this problem?
Turn off auto brightness when outdoors..
Guys I've noticed that even if you turn off auto brightness go out in the sun and turn the screen up to max manually,it will kick up into super brightness mode or shine a led light at the sensor when indoors simulating the sun, just like it does with auto brightness on.sammy really want us to get burn in I think so we have to buy new screens all the time?

Never had a screen burn in on a Samsung phone. Don't worry
Guys, idk if this is a S10 only feature (or Android Pie), but when I'm on that situation, if I lower the brightness slider and leave it there for a second or two, the brightness will actually stay down and not jump back up again. Worth a try.

After the S9+'s update to Pie some of the old settings get copied to the new OS, but if you don't go into the settings and check, things might not be configured correctly - I had to choose a different setting and then choose again what was previously selected to ensure that it was written into the Settings correctly.
With the new update the "Automatic Brightness" applies to the AOD - see here in this screenshot, my search of the Settings for the word "auto brightness", see what comes up in attachment #1.
What you need to do is go to the "Adaptive Brightness" and turn it on, then manually adjust your brightness under a few different conditions (EG: Indoors lights off, outside and overcast, and bright sunny day). Now your phone will understand what setting you want for different conditions and automatically adjust the brightness based on lighting conditions, see attachment #2.
The "auto brightness" is now used for the AOD, and has nothing to do with brightness when unlocked. The reason it "auto snaps to full brightness" is likely because previous settings were just copied over after the update and you haven't setup (and trained) the new "Adaptive Brightness" for various light levels. The AOD has both "Auto Brightness" and double-tap the clock to adjust AOD brightness.
