I've been wondering and searching how to boot into recovery on the thunderbolt? Not from rom manager but when the phone is off. When i had my original moto droid all i had to do was turn it off then turn it on while holding x and i was in recovery how do i do that on the thunderbolt?
And if someone would be so kind as to explain what hboot is thanx!!
hboot is htc's bootloader, mainly used for flashing radio's and flashing stock ruu's. From what i know if u boot in to hboot, power + volume down button, then click recovery, it will boot into the recovery.

Let's see if I get this right:
hboot is the default bootloader. Press at the same time, and hold, power and volume down to get into the bootloader.
From within the bootloader you can choose to enter recovery.

Is there are way to boot into the default recovery (is there are default recovery?)
Every time I attempt this, it defaults to hboot, looks for a radio zip, tells me there isn't one(because there's not one on the sdcard), and only gives me the option to reboot by pressing power. I briefly see the initial menu, with the options for recovery and such under hboot, but I cannot select them with the volume up or down buttons?

My mistake, there is. If that radio zip file is there, you cannot move up and down through the menu then? I got a botched ROM here, hangs on the boot animation, no ADB, and no way to read that sdcard outside the phone.
Edit - If I remove the sdcard, I can do a wipe cache&data factory reset, I think? But my ROM files are on the sdcard.
Can you still use cwr without a battery if its plugged in? I know I could on the OG Droid, so if this still works, you can just take the SD card out, go to hboot and select recovery, then put the SD card back in

I just attempted this, without the battery, I cannot even get a pulse from the TB. With the battery in and no sdcard, I can get into CWR from hboot. Second I remove the battery from the phone, it powers off. Doing this with it plugged into the wall AC too.
Edit - This is where I'm at right now. If I remove the sdcard, wipe cash&data, I can boot into a mostly broken ROM. Specifically, the keyboard FCs immediately, I can skip past the HTC setup screens, the virtual keyboard will generate another FC. At the end of the setup screens, it'll go to a blank background with no icons and the status bar on top, showing 3G signal strength, time, etc. There's nothing on the screen but that. If I push and hold power, it brings up the Power menu, to shutdown, restart, etc. Any option thoroughly locks the phone and requires a battery pull. After that, it'll get stuck in a boot loop at the boot animation until I get into CWR again and wipe cache/data. And I've left it go for a good 20 minutes, more than enough time to rebuild the dalvik.
I should add that this was slightly, as in totally, self inflicted. :/ I was switching ROMs, rolled back from the GB leak radio to the froyo radio, and was wiping cash&data to move to a froyo ROM; got interrupted by another task, and forget where I was at. Basically, I wiped cache&data without flashing a ROM afterward.
Edit - Had to wait until I got home from work. Install the card in a sled, delete the zip, everything's good now.
Im just stuck at the Thunderbolt wallpaper. I tried removing the sd card, battery and all that crap but still stuck. Any way I can work around this?

Boot into hboot and then into recovery to flash a backup you hopefully made and if not just re-flash your ROM. Happened to me once when I rushed through a new ROM flash and didnt verify the MD5. If you dont have a ROM or a backup saved on your card then you can try to do what the guy above you did and put your card into a reader and put one on there that way.

hi,
I have a rooted eris with the tazz v28 rom installed and followed the 1 click guide [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742228] to root my phone a few months back [this uses adb, I belive].
Today, I was following the instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913839 to install the minimal green theme on my eris.
I downloaded the minimal-green-updated.zip file theme [posted in the OP of the minimal green theme thread], put it in my sd card's root folder, rebooted my eris into recovery, then flashed that zip in recovery and rebooted.
[In retrospect, I didn't do a full wipe or davlik cache wipe, because I thought it wasn't necessary because this was a theme, not a rom].
Upon rebooting, my phone comes to a screen with the HTC logo and the little guy dancing around [no skateboard]. This dancing sequence continually repeats itself.
I'm really hoping I did not brick my eris. How can I revert back to my nand backup that I made yesterday or fix this situation ?

how to go back to your nand.
1. pull battery
2. place battery back in
3. hold vol down
4. while holding vol down, press and hold power button
5. should see white screen
6. press vol up for recovery
7. should see recovery menu
8. go to the restore option on the menu
9. restore from your nand (i believe the exact menu selections from this point vary based on which recovery you have)
this should get you back to where you were prior to flash. good job with the nandroid prior to flash. other should be able to help with where the flash went wrong. if it doesnt work, post back here.
edit: was the theme designed for froyo? does the md5sum of your file match the original file posted? either could lead to a bad flash. although it may have to do with not wiping. not really my specialty though. oh yeah that's right, i don't have any specialty...lol. hope it helps.

Thanks for the quick help !
I'm relatively sure the theme was designed for froyo. After reading the replies in that thread, [after I flashed the theme] I think I may have needed to first use another application to make the .zip flashable.
I followed your instructions and when I tried to restore the nand backup, I received the following:
Code:
error: run 'nandroid mobile.sh restore' via adb!
Also, my battery was relatively low [20%] when I flashed the theme... is it ok if I charge it right now ?
yes. you need to turn charge it now. note: it will not charge while in recovery, but should charge when powered off. this is why it is a good habit to only flash on a full charge. let me know right away if the charge light does not come on when it is powered off.
edit: do you still have the flashable tazz v28 on your sd card. if so, you can wipe data and cache and reflash it. if it is not on your card, you should be able to mount your card via usb in recovery and add the tazz v28 to the root of the sd and then flash from there.

i believe the minimum for some things such as running an ruu is 30%. it might be the same for nandroid, but it is best to do on a full charge, that way if something more serious does happen, you have some time to try to fix it. there are some ways to "jumper" your battery if it dies during a flash, but they arent fun.
just making sure, the charge light is on now correct? also, are you using amon ra recovery or clockwork? if you don't know, don't turn on you phone to check, i am just checking because once your phone is back up and running, you may want to get amon if you have clockwork, it does a better job of checking the integrity before flashing.

Charge light is on and I'm 99% sure it's amon_ra . I specifically recall that, before rooting my phone reading that one of those two recoveries was buggy with eris and I purposefully avoided using that one.

alright, good stuff. when your phone charges, go back into recovery, go to backup restore, nand restore and see if you can. if not, if you have the tazz rom on your phone, go to the main menu, wipe, wipe data and dalvik, back to main menu, flash zip from sd card, flash it. if it is not on your card, plug phone into your computer, from main menu of recovery select usb-ms toggle, this will allow you to access your sd from your computer, place the flashable zip on the sd, then follow the above instructions. just post back if you end up needing any more help.
I just tried to restore my nand backup and it worked. Looks like it's all smooth sailing here. =)

not a problem. we all have our little speedbumps...lol
I am using Liquid Thundersense 1.4...I went into the liquid toolbox last night to do a wipe because I was going to flash a new rom. When I said yes to the wipe it turned off and then cam back on at my like main (i guess it is called a bootloader screen) and it will not get any farther than that...I'm not sure what to do about this because the only way the phone responds to anything is by pulling the battery or holding the power and both volume buttons down to restart back to the same damn thing again...I have never had a problem like this so I'm not sure where to go from here...Any help would be appreciated greatly!
I searched everywhere and could find anything this specific
OK I think my terminology was a little off...I guess the bootloader screen is the white screen where you can access fastboot, recovery, factory reset, etc...I still have s-off according to this screen...I can get here by holding down the down volume and the power and I can get to clockwork recovery. But it's when i try to reboot after either one that it gets stuck at that first loading screen
It sounds like you need to put a ROM on your SD card, boot into recovery and flash it from there. Did you not do a wipe and erased your existing ROM? No wonder the phone can't boot anymore.

You are right.
The white screen is the bootloader.
When you get to bootloader navigate to recovery.
if you have made a back up in the past you can go to backup/recovery and recover your old back up.
If not you will have to do what the user above said.
Put a rom.zip file on your sd card and flash it in recovery.
cowisland...thanks i did that and it worked...i must have done the damn wipe wrong or whatever, but i put a rom on my sd and it took care of the problem!

If you have CM7 installed you don't have stock recovery anymore, you have Clockwork Recovery instead. What version of Clockwork are you using? Newer versions use the trackball to select, you could try that.
Maybe you're confusing "stock recovery" with the bootloader screen. If that's the case, try installing the Android SDK w/ ADB on your computer and using the USB connection to run the command adb reboot recovery.

It must be since the stock recovery is erased with CWM in order to be able to flash the rom.

It can't be stock recovery you got into. It must be CWM recovery you got into since the stock recovery is erased once CWM is flashed. This had to be done for you to install CM7. Have you experienced problems with your power button before your rom crashed? And how exactly did it crash?

I'm still a little confused at to your situation. Is your phone currently off or on? If your power button doesn't work, how did you access the bootloader?
Anyway yes, normally holding down and power on will take you to the bootloader, at which point you can select recovery. If your phone is currently off and the power button doesn't work, you have two options:
1. As andrew.cambridge suggested, plug the phone into the charger. That should bring up clockwork unless you have an off-mode charging version
2. Use ADB to send a recovery command from your computer

Don't edit your post to say something completely different when you realize you were wrong. At least use strikethrough and add the correction.
sorry what is strikethrough? what should i have done? i can get my phone on by plugging charger in then putting battery in but it goes into the bootloader i think but it has an option for recovery but i cant select it
What you need to do is turn off the phone completely (do a battery pull or whatever you do to turn it all the way off). When off, put the battery back in (if it is not in already). Then plug your phone into the wall charger while it is STILL OFF. This should prompt it to go into ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM).
I would redownload your whatever ROM you are planning to use and the correlating version of gapps (Google Apps) to your computer. Unplug your USB from the wall charger and plug it into your computer. In CWM, use the trackball to go to the mounts and storage option and press the trackball to select, then go down to the mount USB tab and click it. This will mount your SD card to your computer. You can then transfer the zip files of your newly downloaded ROM and Gapps to your phone. Once finished transferring, click the mount USB option again to unmount it from the computer. Then you need to click go back.
Now you need to do a full wipe. Click wipe data/factory reset then yes. Once done, click wipe cache partition, then yes. Once done, click on mounts and storage and you need to click format system, then yes. Once done, click format data, then yes. Once done, click format cache, then yes. Once done, click format sd-ext (if it exists), then yes.
Now you need to install your ROM and gapps. Click install zip from sdcard and navigate to your ROM zip file, click it, then yes. Once done, do the same for your gapps zip file.
Now you need to click the reboot system now button. It will take a little bit for it to boot, so give it plenty of time. This should get you back on your feet.

When you say it gets stuck, do you mean that the arrow stops moving and it just stays there or the animation just keeps going and CM7 never actually loads out? Anyways, this happened to me before and all I had to do was a full wipe/reset and reflash the rom. Everything went well after that. Did you follow ALL the instructions given in post #11? This should have fixed the problem.
it stays on that screen forever if i let it, also all i get is cannot find device when i try and adb into it. What state does your phone need to be in to use adb?
Do you have the phone drivers installed on your computer?

Hope this is the appropriate forum but I am in desperate need of help. Please move if there is a better place for this to be posted.
I rooted my sons Thunderbolt using ADB method a while back and was using a GingerROM of some sort and wanted to turn him on to Cyanogen as I use it on my Inc. and his ROM was acting funny at times as of late.
Anyways, I DL Cyanogen and a new radio found in these threads. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249328
I Nadroid'd back up, wiped data, installed ROM from boot, said was successful...White boot screen for 10 minutes. Decided to pull battery and tried to boot again and several times after but cant get past white HTC boot screen.
I can however boot in H-boot. I am unable to navigate through the options as it goes straight to wanting to update from a .zip file. I left the old files that I flashed originally ROM and radio perhaps, and I'm not sure what ones it's wanting me to update to or from, new or old. I have not started the update as I am not sure of the files.
There are 2 files: 1) MDM9K and 2)RADIO_V2
I cancel the update and I have to press power to reboot which starts the process I started with all over again. I wanted to connect to PC so see the contents of the SD card and possibly start the flashing process over, but it will not recognize the device so I can read the SD contents.
What do I do?
Boot up in clockwork recovery....wipe data....and after also wipe cache ...and then install zip from SD card...and install your desired rom....I do not know if that rom requires a different radio so that it can function properly...but give the rom another shot..and wait for it to boot...it may take a while..just let it go thru...make some coffee or something to wait

Said you had an Inc? Throw the Thunderbolts sdcard in your Inc, use a file manager to rename the file and you should be set to get into recovery.
And by the way, you'll want to rename PG05IMG as that's the file that is trying to be flashed in hboot.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Thanks for the quick replies. I can't boot into clockwork, that's the problem. I will try putting the SD card in my phone and see if I can get a new ROM to flash after I delete old stuff from it.
Also you just have to put your sons sdcard in your phone to rename the radio file. Once it's renamed, put it back in the Thunderbolt and boot into recovery and restore the nand. Then you'll be able to download a new rom and connect to a PC and what not.

Once you rename or remove the file, if it still gets stuck at the htc screen for longer than 10 minutes, you can hold down both volume buttons and the power button at the same time. I had that problem with the ROM I am on now and it cleared it up
im having a very similar problem except i dont have an extra phone to be abe to rename those files! i was originally on TWRP as a recovery but when i tried to install thunder sense or something like that and i tried wiping system partition, it wiped everything possible and when i tried flashing the ROM, it said that the zip could not be opened. i tried adb to flash a new boot img and to get cwm back but now im stuck. any help? is there a way to flash a system img and boot img from somewhere and still keep root?

nope not able to because of the PG05IMG file on the card. i can take the card out but then theres no point in going into recovery if i cant do anything in it. and cant access the card through adb to pull it off because it appears offline when stuck in the boot loop and it doesnt appear at all when in hboot update mode.
Ok, took some troubleshooting but I think I got it.
Follow these steps:
1. Power off your phone & remove SD card and don't have your phone on the charger.
2. Hold Power and vol. down to get into hboot.
3. Now plug your phone into the charger to the wall (won't work w/ usb charging)
4. Pull battery. Should stay on in hboot
5. Insert sd card, replace battery and select Recovery from hboot
You should boot into recovery and should be able to connect to your pc to remove the radio file and throw a rom and flash. I tested this method and can confirm it worked. (though I suppose this only will work if you still have a recovery installed)

I've run into that problem before, because of forgetting to rename the Radio. If you have an SD card reader lying around, you and pop your Micro SD into that and delete or rename the radio from there.
Ran into this problem last night. I barely removed my SD card, put the battery back in and start tilting it away from the phone. Leave yourself enough room between the battery and phone to slide something like a letter opener up to where the SD card is. Push slightly and your SD card will be ready forreading again. Put the battery down in its normal spot while the phone is still on, boot into Recovery and you are set.

Seeing green lines flash across the hboot screen saying that is normal. Once it finishes showing those lines, follow these instructions...
From this screen (hboot):
Use volume key down to highlight the recovery option and then hit the power button.
Once in recovery, wipe data/factory reset 3x, clear data 1x. Then scroll to advanced and wipe dalvik cache 1x.
After that, install zip from SD card and navigate to and install a desired ROM.

Im not sure, I used the liquid smooth rom from feb of this year so which ever was out then. I know I might not be making sense about all of this but I am doing my best to understand everything.

I have a similar problem, but when i tried to do this from hboot the volume keys wont work and it automatically selects (im assuming fastboot?) and asks if i want to start update. Any ideas?

Not sure why it would do that.
Can you even get your phone to boot the ROM?

I just got past this on my phone. If you remove your sd card it shouldn't force you into fastboot. The only way I found was pushing the battery against the pins, holding the sd card in the slot but sticking out some. Hold volume down and power and get to recovery keeping the sd card partially out, then once in recovery put your battery in place without losing contact with the pins. You are now in recovery with access to your sd card, which hopefully has a working rom you can load.
I am at school without a micro sd card reader, but deleting any updates on your sd may stop the fastboot.
Simply remove the PG05IMG.zip (radio image) from the root of SD card and then it should boot to recovery no problem.
It's seeing the radio image file and won't get past the update yes/no screen because it is present on the card.
Rename or remove it and you should be good to go.
