Samsung Vibrant vs myTouch 4G? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, im going back to android (had a G1 a year ago) from blackberry (got tired) and im getting two good offers on these phones, but since these smartphones are SO different to what i used to have (G1 xD), im kinda confused wich one is better, so i want you guys to help me out here, wich is one should i get? Vibrant or myTouch 4G?
Internet speed its not important since i don't live in a 4G area (in fact, there isn't any 4G coverage at all in my country), but i like to play games and stuff like that. I like my phone to be fast and with very little lag. I have read on internet that Samsung's Hummingbird processor its better than the Snapdragon proccesor that the myTouch 4G have, but, i don't know why, i keep reading on forums that the myTouch 4G is faster than the Vibrant...how is that possible? The Vibrant have more RAM, ROM (16GB Internal, the myTouch have only 4GB), faster proccesor, better GPU...well, im a little confused there too.
Any opinions?

Mytouch 4G. It has way more features and has a bigger community of devs.
Camera with FLASH! Trackpad. Front Camera. Metallic build quality.

With both phones stock, the HTC has 700+ mb of ram available and the Vibrant has only 304+ available. The other issue is file systems. The HTC uses I think ext4 and the Vibrant uses its home grown system of RFS. I feel the RFS system is probable the biggest issue to slow the phone down. I have mine rooted with custom rom that uses ext4 (voodoo) and it is faster with much better battery life then all the stock MT4G's that I have seen. If you are not going to root anything then I would recommend the MT4G or even look at the G2x. But the screen on the vibrant is killer

myTouch4G has 768mb ram, Vibrant has 512mb (about 330mb is available for Android to use, depending on the rom).
I'd say the MSM8255 Snapdragon is probably on-par with the Hummingbird in the SGS - the SGS does have a much better GPU for 3D gaming, though.
The Vibrant may have a 16gb ROM, but only 2gb is available for app storage, the rest is treated as an internal SD card.
They would both be great phones, but the Vibrant has the better screen.

I have a vibrant and my wife has a mt4g. I would say if youre going to root and flash roms get the vibrant, but if youre going to leave it stock get the mt4g. Both phones were laggy stock to me. Im much happier with the dev community for the vibrant though. I've flashed 6 or 7 different roms on the mt4g (including cm7) but none of them seem as complete as bionix or trigger

Ok, i forgot to say this, but im TOTALLY going to root the phone. In fact, is one of the mains reasons that im comming back to android (and here plays the song "Im comming home" by Dirty Money ), i love flashing roms, looking for bugs in new roms, the excitement of someone releasing a new rom (like Cyanogen), trying out weird apps in the market place and all that kind of stuff, i DON'T like stock phones at all...i installed OS6 on my Blackberry 9300 as soon as i got it, looking for something different (running away from stock), still was a pretty boring phone tough.
You have told me guys that both phones stock, the MT4G its faster, but what about both phones rooted? Should i get the Vibrant? Or even both phones rooted, the myTouch its still better?
EDIT: Also, are the Samsung Vibrant and the Samsung Captivate the exact same device? Under the hood, of course.

Both rooted running custom roms with no overclock my vibrant and my wifes mt4g scored within 6 points of each other on quandrant. I'd say it come down the ffc if that's important to you or super amoled screen (more important to me)

FFC? Whats that? Sorry for the noobie question...
EDIT: Nevermind, just guessed what it is...Front Face Camera, right?
Hm, if i guessed right, then having a FFC its not important to me, i don't like video calls.
Any more inputs?

Thats a yes for sure. Every single moment im alone, in the bus or something alike. im listening to music.

Well, I absolutely love my vibrant. Plenty fast (q score 1600+), amoled screen rules, and camera takes amazing pix. Flash isn't an issue since I don't really take pix in the dark lol.
It has less ram, but its near impossible to hard brick from what I've read. I'd say go vibrant, and if you don't like it, flash back to stock and exchange for the mt4g.

My problem its that im buying it second hand, so its not as easy as i"f i dont like it, i just take it back..." So thats why i have to make the right choice, because oncei buy the phone, its going to be difficult to sell it again.

Well, I'd say that if you don't have 4g coverage, why buy a 4g phone. Its like buying a Ferrari when you live in Poland. Maybe not as expensive, but you can't take full advantage of it. Lol.
Do you have any questions about the phone itself? Not spec wise?

If you are into gaming, then vibrant hands down. Here are the things I would take into consideration.
1. Bigger dev community for the mytouch4g. I think most of the people with the vibrant will be leaving for the Sensation or the galaxy 2 if they have the funds. I am going with the galaxy S 2 myself. With that being said the development will dwindle down to nothing by the end of the summer.
2. There are great roms for the vibrant right now. Trigger, Bionix, and a bunch of stable 2.2.1 roms to choose from.
3. I don't know if a stable cm7 will ever happen for the vibrant. They have it working ok. Plenty of bugs, and bad battery. Also no 2.3 rom has working gps because of drivers. You will have to wait on a leaked 2.3 rom for the vibrant I think.
I love my vibrant for gaming. I have about 5 Gameloft games.. bogo for $2.99 . Can't beat that. And the phone handles them beautifully. I am running Trigger btw, just because I wanted a stable rom until I get the galaxy 2 .
I hope this helps with your decision, I know I rambled a bit. But I think i covered everything on the development side for you.

Cm7 runs fine for me. However, I don't use GPS so it suits my needs. Runs fast needs daily charge, but meh, that's what sleep is for lol

On top of what everyone else said, Voodoo sound on the vibrant makes listening to music through the 3.5 mm jack a dream. I can't go back now. It's just too good.

No, look at specs vs vibrant
http://g2.t-mobile.com/g2-specs
The big issue i have hear regarding the g2 is its major hinge problem. But thats just what i heave read and hear, not from personal experience. Do so more research, head to a T-mobile store and check one out for yourself.
I have it is good
Hmmm ....

I wouldn't do it personally. I hate physical keyboards. I'll take Swype and a smaller phone any day.
It comes down to what keyboard do you like and can you get 4G speeds. I can't where I am (they say we have H but i get the same speeds as all my friends with MyTouch 4's).
I think yea preferences
I will do it

As many have said. If you use your phone for games and music keep the vibrant. I have the g2 and the vibrant and imo the vibrant has its downsides as does the g2. The screen on the g2 looks fuzzy compared to the vibrant and the speaker sucks! What got me into getting the g2 was the keyboard the long lasting battery and the trackpad...If you have any questions ask me and ill answer them

the question is that do you want a keyboard??
so yeaaa if you need a keyboard then go with the g2 .there is no such reason trading your vibrant for a g2.
i had both, i say vibrant
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874754
I have a g2, my brother a vibrent, and I say g2. My brother has sent his vibrent back 3 times so far. He has had it for 2 months. He also has bricked it many times (his doing I'm sure). I have yet to brick my g2, and I have swap many roms and kernals. His GPS is crap, along with his 3g. My g2 has everything his vibrent has and more. My g2 has 4g speeds, wifi hotspot( I even play mw2 on ps3 with no lag), a qwerty keypad, swype, 2.2 froyo, faster cpu, and a more true form of a google phone. I have my phone OC to 1.8MHz and my battery last all day with the help of setcpu. The Z hinge is not much of a problem, only if you lay on your back and use the keypad, but the way you hold the phone stops that problem. The g2 is able to do every thing the vibrent can and more but in the end its all up to you. Its your time and money, go to the store and take a look for your self.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Your cpu is not faster. Its more efficient. And dont act like the g2 is that much better. In fact if my vibrant had 4g like the next one id suffice to say the vibrant was plain better.
I do like the feel of the g2. Solid and if your getting robbed it can defend your life. Keyboard is nice.
The 4"screen on the vibrant really is better to type with. Swype is better than the physical kep pad.
And last but best of all the screen on the vibrant smashes the g2. Your talking two diffrent generations of screens.
Roms cancel any os disputes.
After the vibrant gets 2.2 official it will be more efficient. And its still plenty efficient.
The gps in the vibrant is trash. Some work. Some dont.
The vibrant 4g will be a better phone.

I'm thinking about trading my Vibrant for a G2 today. Is there anything I should know before I do? Is it easy to flash? What good ROMS are available? Does T-Mobile charge extra for 4G?

[Q] Atrix still bad?

I currently have a Inspire 4G and I'm debating on getting the Atrix.

It was good when it was locked, now that it is unlocked it is turning into a behemoth. Just wait until you see a polished CM7 rom on this thing.
it was never bad, otherwise this forum would be desolate.
If you are willing to unlock and flash custom ROM, its a beast.
If you have to live with the stock firmware, there's probably better options out there, unless you really hate 4.3 form factor.
put it to you this way the locked bootloader was why alot of people didnt care for it but the bootloader can be unlocked now and the custom rom train is going to pick up steam, as some one else said cm7 for one thing
It's better than the Inspire that I owned.
Don't listen to what they say in the Inspire forums. The Inspire isn't the best AT&T has and the Atrix is a lot better than what people think. It's a very nice phone.
Not trying to put the Inspire down at all--I just know because I've owned both of them. The Atrix beats it and the Nexus S that I have...

Honestly, it was never bad. As a stock device that was incapable of installing kernels, it was good. I still found myself using my Captivate while the bootloader was locked. Now that there's ROMs and kernels available, I haven't touched my Cappy at all.
wow! I wasn't expecting that many responses so fast!
I want to root the phone, play ff7 (of course) and ENJOY the phone.
I put a custom rom on my inspire so I don't see why I wouldn't put a custom rom on the atrix...
Trying to get the inspire back to "out of the box" state so I can return it.
The only issue I have with the inspire is running fpse and ff7. little laggy at times. hoping the dual core will remedy the issue.
hell, it's the same price and you get more internal memory, hdmi cable, and a better CPU..

Atrix or nexus s??

Just want opinions. Thank you
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Without sd card reader, half the ram, single core cpu, lower resolution screen, IMO the Atrix, hands down. Nexus S is a phone of the past.
Sure, it's a Google Phone, it gets everything first, but with CM7 picking up it's pace as it has been on the Atrix, I don't see why anyone would pick the Nexus S instead.
Go go Atrix!
Agreed the Atrix has better specs. The Nexus S is a nice phone, I've gotten to play with it because my cousin has one. The Atrix is superior hardware and the Nexus S will get the official Google updates first. If I was going to pick between the two, I would definitely choose my Atrix, but I would also be happy with a Nexus S. I've been running the newest CM weekly with fingerprint for about 48 hours and have been very impressed with it.
I have the atrix running cm7 oc'd 1.45 but I wanna trade for BNIB NEXUS S WHITE
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Depends on whether you are planning to load a custom ROM. If not, definitely don't use the Atrix. If yes, then the Atrix is probably better (unless you need a bigger screen or are a camera buff).
I love the atrix but, I have to ask....
If your going to buy a new phone why don't you get... "A new phone"?
Samsung Galaxy S II ?
Samsung Galaxy Nexus ?
and yes stock moto sucks.

Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
It's pretty fast anyway without overclock, but when you get over the 100 app mark then you notice that it doesn't perform as fast. But overclocking to 1.45Ghz makes a significant difference to the speed.
So oc'ing the ns however fast(I haven't looked it up)would be nearly the same speed I'm having now on my atrix?? Or will I noticelag on the ns

You will notice lag. No matter how much you OC it, it won't be as smooth as the Atrix.
That's not saying the NS is a bad phone, but the only time I've used mine since i've had my Atrix is when the ICS SDK port was released.
I would go with the Nexus S. The probable lack of Sammich on the Atrix is a deal breaker for me.

You can always try a different launcher.
I think that for some custom roms (specifically xboarder56's) you can disable the 3D effects by a Tweaks app that comes pre-installed in the rom.

This device is more complicated than that.
However once you unlock your bootloader it's fairly simple.
I know NRGs Energy ROM also has the tweaks to disable the carousel and 3D widgets if you want. I actually think it's XBoarder's tweaks app just borrowed.

Everyone has a different opinion on battery life. I typically get anywhere from 16 to 28 hours of battery life depending on amount of use. Got the same on stock ROM with brightness turned all the way down.
If you like Aosp go with galaxy nexus. There is no telling when we will get Aosp Ics. If you prefer Sense though definitely go with the amaze. Its a great phone hardware wise! The real big difference is the software and camera. If the camera is a big thing for you maybe the amaze is the way to go. Its a much better camera.
Great phone, there are only two issues that my phone has:
+The capacitive lights bleed onto the main screen.
+The flash for the camera bleeds into the lens.
Besides that everything works perfectly!
Concerning battery: for me if my phone stays on standby it will last for days, but if i use it heavily it'll give me a good day's use out of it.

I was also torn between these two phones myself. I decided to settle with the Amaze due to the mediocre camera on the galaxy nexus, and also the lack of expandable memory (they seriously seemed to have pulled an Apple with this). The nexus does have the 720p screen (pentile though), but the Amaze offers the perfect blend of screen size and resolution. It seems like we do have a few hardworking devs, so it’s a matter of time before more jump ship to Amaze with more ROMs available.
One of the reasons I went with the Amaze was due to the back of the phone. I actually think hardware wise it is one of the nicest phones out there.
Like others mentioned, battery life just depends how you use it. I get between 8-14 hours depending on my day. That is quite a few 20 minute or so phone calls, texting a good amount, web browsing, g-talk quite a bit and a little BT streaming of music and movies. Streaming of the music and movies will really suck it down quick though. I know someone else who has a black Amaze and.gets 5 hours, but he is always downloading movies and streaming music.
It really is a great phone and it does have a good camera, just have to have decent lighting for a good picture.
Might run into a couple small issues like light bleeding into the screen from the soft keys lighting up. There are a couple apps out there to shut them off. I believe the G-Nex suffers from the same exact thing. That and the flash bleeding when taking a pic. I personally have yet to have that happen though. Seems common enough though.
Good luck! There are some good peeps on this board and especially in the Amaze section.

There's a thread somewhere on here about it, but the gist of it is that the dual flash isn't confined/separated enough from the lens so sometimes you get some light bleed on the bottom (or however you hold your phone while taking a pic).
Supposedly you can fix it with a tiny piece of electrical tape, it basically mimics the effect of putting the dual flash in a housing unit (like the sensation has). I haven't noticed it enough yet to do that, but it does bug me that HTC produced this phone without fixing that...haha

[Q] would it be ridiculous for me to come back to this phone?

ok, so i have an SGS4G now, and i've had it for about a year now (since when it came out, not exactly sure how long ago that was ) and at the time of my getting it, i had a vibrant. i didn't know much of anything about customizing android phones at the time and randomly one night i was like "i wonder what i can do to hack this thing". so i rooted my vibrant but never installed a rom or kernel cuz as i said, i had no clue what it really was.
but my question is, would it be ridiculous for me to go back to the vibrant? i mean i LOVE my SGS4G, but there is so much more available for the vibrant. and i don't really use my FFC and i'm on wifi for a lot of the day so i don't think only having 3g would be a big issue for me.
thanks for your input.
well if you want to flash custom roms then the vibe is the way to go as it has more development going than the 4g.

I had a SGS4G and I just sold it on eBay because their is just so many more options for this phone. The Roms that the SGS4G does have are great, but their are only like 2 or 3 developer's for that phone (who are awesome by the way). This phone just has so much more to choose from.

I'm due for my upgrade soon, and am finding it very difficult to find a replacement that offers as much. Never mind development, new phones are just not hitting the mark. Either the resolution is piss poor (SGS2), or removable storage is missing (Galaxy Nexus), or there's no removable battery (One S), or no development or support (Blaze 4g) etc.. This phone offered everything when it was released, and now I'm spoiled.

I winder if tmo offers any bonus for waiting to upgrade

I agree 100%. I had a choice between a Nexus S and this and I chose this and never looked back. This is a great phone to learn on but also it is extremely user friendly and now with all the ICS ROMs and many devs coming back on one form or another, it should be a no brainer. Does that extra G really make that much difference?
That's my question really. And I also wonder how the battery life is on the vibrant with custom Roms and kernels and whats the best combo?

You've already got that 1650mah battery from the 4g, and the Epic Touch's 1800mah also fits in the Vibrant, so battery life has gotten pretty good lately. Not to mention ICS ROMs, like AOKP, get very good battery life.

With Passion 13 RC1 and Ice Kiss Kernel 8.2 I was able to charge my phone every two days... amazing battery life... 3g always on! the only issue is that GPS breaks after deep sleep, so if you need that, it might be a pain in the ass..
right now I am using CM9 + SubZero Kernel #70. Battery life is not as good as the mentioned above, but it works very well. And GPS doesn't break after DS, as long as you get a lock once the system starts (first time at boot).
