just search for Z4root or Ginger break depending on your android froyo version
using the XDA app, you can download the apk file direct to your phone and install and run it from there

got root and custom recover without PC
Use the Gingerbreak app to get root without a PC. I have just finished doing this.
I sent the link to myself in email from my desktop browser then downloaded with the Optimus to my /sdcard/download directory. I then installed the file using Explorer from the Market. Then just click and the Gingerbreak installs the root with the "su" program and the Superuser app. Then you can install a Busybox and Terminal from the Google Market. Check if you can be root.
I then flashed a custom AmonRa recovery without a PC for RA-thunderg-1.2.0-GNM by sending the link to myself in email and downloading to my /sdcard/download directory. I then used the busybox programs "md5sum" and "unzip" with the AmonRa zip:

md5sum amon_ra_recovery_installer.zip
unzip amon_ra_recovery_installer.zip -d /sdcard/
cd ..
su
sh ./rf.sh
I hope I remembered everything. I do have root now and AmonRa recovery without a PC so that is possible. After all that, I just got the "adb" working in Linux by adding the IDs to the udev config. Of course, I could have used USB file transfer to the Optimus instead of using the email except my phone was sitting in my truck at the time. Look here for more information:

help, ive tried to root so many times using the superoneclick rooting method, and i dont know why it isnt working, im usb debugging, and everytime, the program stops at waiting for device and then stops responding, i have to force close it cuz it stops responding. I've tried searching for other threads about this issue but have found none. I have an Optimus V with ROM manager and anytime I try to Flash Clockwork Recovery Mod a window pops up that instructs me to confirm my phone model. The only problem is that none of the models listed are mine. I picked the first option (the "Huawei Pulse Mini") and it said that it installed correctly, but I still don't know if I'll be able to flash other ROMS correctly.
Summary: How do I get my phone model to show up in the pop up window of Rom Manager when I want to install Clockwork Recovery Mod

The only choices that show up are:
Huawei Pulse Mini, Dell Streak, Hyawei Pulse, Commtiva Z71 (Boston, Blaze, and more), Geeksphone ONE, Spice MI70o Commtiva Link N700 and more

Also, under Current Recovery it says Clockwork Mod 2.5.0.7 (it also says this as the latest version). Not sure if that helps or not, but thought I would let everyone know.
You will have to ask your developer for support, the one who made port of recovery for ur phone. I think opcode did that port.....

I found the recovery image for the Optimus One and put the .img file on the root of my SD card, but I'm not too sure where to go from there. What do I do with the .img file on my SD card?

Install the .zip from Rom Manager?
EDIT: Downloaded Android SDK and currently installing archives. Once that finishes do I just open an adb shell window and type in the commands that he gives in the opening post?
You can also do all that in terminal emulator app without any sdk. But the command are to be typed should be exact with no mistakes.
Also do search for cwm recovery for your phone there's also another cwm recovery for ur phone that's stable. In terminal emulator app type 'su' at $ prompt than promt changes to # than type all the commands.

Yes, you can root directly from your phone by using terminal emulator but you have to put photon-torpedo.tar to /data/tmp first. I rooted my photon on the phone itself.

Ok can you please tell me how you got terminal to process your commands. I get permission denied every time I use terminal to try and do anything with /data. I obviously need root to complete the commands using terminal to write to anything besides the sd. I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

then type the following in terminal emulator:

/bin/tar xf /data/tmp/photon-torpedo.tar

Not sure if you were responding to me or the other guy but my MacBook and my Linux laptop both recognize my phone but they both say its offline when I try and use a adb. Some people say they have done this root without the computer and just using the terminal on the phone but I get permission denied messages since it needs root. I have super user installed but that does me no good without root. I want to know how they got past the permission denied using the terminal on the phone?

Make sure you have USB debugging checked. Menu > settings > applications > development. This was my problem when I first tried to adb the file to the /data/tmp folder on the phone.
Also, I was getting an error at "Run /data/tmp/photon-torpedo.sh," but I just ignored it and kept going. It worked. You can use root checker from the market to verify that you have root.

Thanks for the advice but the both of us are not using adb. I always have debugging enabled. We are both trying to do this from or phones with terminal. An update zip would be amazing :~)

I was trying to use adb with my Mac and my Linux laptop but both give me "device offline" when I use adb. I'm going to try a different USB cable as I have seen this happen before and a different cable works but I find it hard to believe that i'm the only one that used stock cable and does not work

I would appreciate if somebody could tell me step by step on how to root my phone.
There are many different variants on the photon-torpedo method that you can find on these forums, the stickies, and through google search, but here is the step by step method I prefer. Credit goes to Edgan.
Photon Root Instructions
1. Create a folder in the C:/ drive on your Windows 7 machine called Photon root. (You can call it anything you want, but that’s what I called mine and will use for the purpose of this post).
2. Download and install the adb package from http://gititbit.ch/AFAS and install them into C:/Photon root.
3. Download photon-torpedo.tar from http://proton.cygnusx-1.org/~edgan/photon/photon-torpedo.tar and copy it to C:/Photon root in your windows machine. Do not unzip it.
4. On your phone, go to Settings > Applications > Development and select USB Debugging.
5. Plug your phone to your computer and on your phone, set it to USB Mass Storage.
6. Copy photon-torpedo.tar from C:/Photon Root to your phone’s internal storage using Windows 7. Don’t put it in any folder, and leave it zipped.
7. Install Superuser from the Market. (This is absolutely necessary to do before you get started or it won’t work)
8. Open the command prompt (Start >> run “cmd” >> enter)
9. Type the following commands – don’t worry about the errors, it will be all right
• cd C:/photon root • adb push photon-torpedo.tar /data/tmp • adb shell • cd /data/tmp • /bin/tar xf /data/tmp/photon-torpedo.tar • /data/tmp/photon-torpedo.sh • /data/tmp/install-su.sh
10. That's it. Reboot and enjoy.

I just verified the download, it has the adb.exe you seek, and also the photon-torpedo.tar file you'll need. It's all in a zip file, QBKing77 also includes a video on what to do.
