[Q] Samsung Fascinate 4G Root (Telus SGH-T959P) - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondering if there is a root method available for the SGH-T959P. Essentially it's a Telus T959D with HSPA+ speeds.
I'm wondering if current root methods would suffice and just ensure I protect the radio from changing.
Edit: Rooting can be done with SuperOneClick. Carrier unlock instructions below.

I'm curious about this as well.

Actually looking at the firmware I realized this phone is probably the Vibrant 4G in the states. Of course, anyone willing to verify before I brick my phone, go ahead..

Got root through one click root method... have not been able to unlock yet though, as all methods seem to be failing.

Just coming on here to say the same thing. Looking at the unlock, it's a bit different from the SGS i9000 but I think I found a solution. Will post..
Hell yea.
su
cat /efs/root/afs/settings/nv_data.bin >> /sdcard/nv_data.bin
Use a Hex editor on nv_data.bin. I used xvi32.
Goto to hex line 1469 (line 1463) (Or just Ctrl+F "01" hex, it's the first set)
Change "FF 01 00 01 00 00 30" to "FF 00 00 00 00 00 30"
rm /efs/root/afs/settings/nv_data.bin
cat /sdcard/nv_data.bin >> /efs/root/afs/settings/nv_data.bin
chmod 755 /efs/root/afs/settings/nv_data.bin
chown radio.radio /efs/root/afs/settings/nv_data.bin || chown 1001.1001 /efs/root/afs/settings/nv_data.bin
reboot

For those that got their new fascinate today i can tell you that the one click root method does indeed work. I had to put it into debug mode prior to attempting to root it.
Once rooted i manually made the changes to the nvdata file. I even used the hex editor that you can find on the market to make these changes.
I rooted and its now unlocked. I even put the sim card for my Galaxy tab in to make sure it worked and indeed it worked without a hitch.
Now to find a custom rom to put on it. I just wonder if the fascinate roms will work or any of the galaxy s 4g ones will.

I can also confirm that the Telus Fascinate 4G can be rooted and unlocked with SuperOneClick. I've attached a picture.

I didn't have to alter the nv_data.bin. Just follow the directions to root, then goto line 1469 and after the FF look at the ASCII data instead of the hex. It should be displaying the unlock code. Mine was 8 digits long. Worked for me. Completely unlocked.
Hence no need to alter the nv_data.bin, or save it. Just root so you can copy it to your sd card for viewing.. that's it.
Enjoy.

Has anyone tried any custom roms on this yet?

I am hoping someone has. Especially after rooting, unlocking and testing it with my bell sim card.
I would like to at least get a base rom that has cwm on it.

How is the testing going? Any keyboard freezes? My Nexus S freezes all the time. I still have the Telus Fascinate 4g in the box. (although I did unlock it, I haven't actually used it)

Had no problem using my bell sim card in the phone. i had to enter the apn settings from my gt-i9000m to get the internet working on it though.
Now if only someone has tried to odin cmw onto it. I want to know if its possible to do that.

For those that are trying to the phone into download mode, i found the following guide, #1 works.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069032&highlight=download
FIRST METHOD (easiest/most common)
1) Power phone off
2) Plug USB into computer
3) Hold vol up + vol down
4) Plug USB into phone while still holding the vol up and vol down
5) Yellow /_\ (triangle, Downloading, Andy shoveling, Do not turn off Target!!! symbol)
Your now in Download mode
Really sucks that we need to be plugged into a computer to do this though... i like my i9000 where i don't have to do that. (3 button method).
Now, to get into CWM (the basic one on the phone), it is similar to the first method. Just hold down the power button as well as the volume up and down buttons. Once the battery icon shows up, let all the buttons go to boot into CWM.

I picked a Telus SGH-T959P in Kijiji for $200 ! Locked to Telus... I used One Click Root, unlocked and have it working with Rogers SIM..
Love the phone... Doing a lot of reading on how to install custom ROM's. I am a bit confused... Does anybody know what is the best ROM for the Telus SGH-T959P? Thanks !

I haven't tried to put any custom roms on it... as i don't know how it will react to it...
All i know is that i've been able to root it, and network unlock it.

I have the phone too unlocked and all for rogers. Does your mobile ap work? It world on my captivate from rogers but not the fascinate

I tried a ROM for the SGS4G using CWM and my T959P is currently soft bricked. Waiting for some kind soul to upload a dump so I can bring my phone back to life... win mobile really sucks after a couple months on android.

Have you tried that one click unbrick app yet?

Well ya had me all excited there for a while, but I tried it and no go. It ndoes it's thing and reboots the phone... right back to where I was. Download mode, or the logo screen.

Problem solved. Read my little story here:

Infrastructure Mode WiFi Tether (Bounty Thread)

There have been several threads on this subject, including the most recent here.
In a nutshell:
The current Wifi tether application, avalable at http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com, can only run in adhoc mode on the DX2. Unfortunately, many devices can only connect to Wifi hotspots running in 'infrastructure mode.'
I will start the bounty at $10 for a Wifi tether app that can successfully share my DX2 as a hotspot running in infrastructure mode.
This can only be done by editing the kernel which can only be done by unlocking the bootloader. You're better off contributing the money into unlocking the bootloader.

Will an unlocked bootloader allow any hacks to get qpst to work? On the fascinate, that was the most reliable way to get infrastructure mode to work using the stock hotspot app.

Apparently qpst works until you reboot and then the file gets overwritten, althugh I have not tried myself.

No, I get it to stick.
I do not have a "step by step" but:
Read the post by Cellzealot ( my prev post)
use radiocomm to "unlock seem" (00....)
then QPST, I did vocoder and tethering
Then radiocomm to relock the seem (01...)
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1593533-service-programming-on-the-moto-droid/page29

The relock to make it stick is my own workaround.

A picture or video tutorial for this would be wonderful.

edit
nia and tethered nia should be the same: Just remove the "dun"

cdma
evrc serv opt
change to 4gv wb ( I did all 3 fields )
do not click the amps tab, there is bug.
It would not hurt to do the whole process in airplane mode.
Ok, I did the following steps (see attachments) and after all this it still brings me to the vzw launcher page telling me how to add the service to my account.
Well, so much for that!
This is new. I was tethering about a month ago then I had to do a *228 so the fix was lost.
So is this the end of free tethering?
Thanx for the pics BTW.
Did you put 01 back in the seem?

Yeah, they fixed the loophole. I did several attempts, tried both @vzw.com, @vzw3g.com.
Hate that I did all those sceenshots for nothing, but maybe someone will come across this, even for a different phone. I found one in the Fascinate forums that clarified a few things for me.
wow, and to think on my TP2 a single readily available .cab did this
Radiocomm Worked For Me, Mobile Hotspot Works Fine.

[Q] Root and Rom

Yes i just bought a galaxy Ace and i was wondering if there was an easy way to root or a step by step too root this device
and also what the best Rom was for this phone is
i am from canada here and on the koodo network
For now the unofficial Cyanogenmod7 works best with my usage.
And for the first question, for the love of chuck norris, just google how to root your device... It's as simple as pressing a button. *hint*
I know i find ones and such but it just seems time consuming and what not lol

Then don't do it. Simple as that.
Figured instead of posting a new thread I'd reply here. I'm in the similar situation sorta, just had a few questions.
My model is the GT-S5830D 2.3.4 and I have Gingerbread.DTLKI4. I haven't encountered any threads with the similar build. I also noticed with KIES it tells me that my phone is not upgradeable. I'm wondering if Koodo put a proprietary lock on my phone and I'm curious whether I can still root my phone? Do you have to unlock in order to root? I've read a bit but I'm having a hard time grasping this concept.
Thanks.

Im guessing that "Koodo" is your carrier? You have to root your device before being able to unlock it at all so it wont really matter what carriar ure on.
I think that's how it works, since i got my ace w/o contract I didnt have to deal with this.
edit: beware, unlocking your phone may brick your phone, or maybe just loosing ure IMEI (source: all the xda threads)
Yes Koodo is the carrier i my self am not 100% sure what they did to it if anything at all to the phone i know i seen a few root guides online just seems like it's alot to do to root it i am sure it can be did i have full access to rom manager and would like to toss a custom rim on this unit as i did with my lg optimus one is all to which is running void forever... Plus to be able to get rid of all the bloatware in this phone would be nice any how a little help would be grand

Rooting SGA is not hard at all, sga was my first android phone and I was able to root it on my 2nd day of using it.
DONT use Rom Manager, just flash CWM (clockworkmod) and use it instead, ull probably brick your phone using Rom Manager (even after doing backup and stuff).
edit: it just seems to be a lot of step when rooting SGA, i assume you read the information from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12874680#post12874680
If you reduce obvious steps like "2) Turn on your phone" "4) Connect your phone into PC via cable" etc. ull get a very short tutorial.
like this:
(text in italic = added/edited text)
C. Rooting for 2.2.1:
2) Enable Debugging at Apliccations>Programming
3) Connect your phone into PC via cable
4) Launch Super One Click 2.1.1 and Click "Root", wait.
7) When the process is complete turn off SOC and unplug your phone and reboot it.
So it's actually just 4 steps.
Not bad so your saying I should toss rim manager off and such... I now see it easier then i had read before lol... Now what about flashing new software like stock gingerbread? Will it free memory up and what rom would you suggest for this model CM7 or something lighter?

Yes, never use Rom Manager is my tip, even though it does work in very few cases... And as I mentioned, use CWM instead.
I would recommend CM7 to the more experienced users; not saying you need to be a pro to use it, but it's not as stable as the stock roms. Just stay away from settings that you dont know anything about and you should be good (especially the options in performance).
Flashing roms and such are all in the link that i posted before, take some time reading it and you should be good to go.
Perfect... See i typically do read through all guides but beeing new to android by about a year now it dont hurt for advice from people that has been around the OS for a abit longer and have had experience in said things

Oh ok, you need to root before you unlock anyway. Cool. I wanted to root it anyway, just wasn't sure if it was before or after unlocking. I just seem to have some proprietary Koodo firmware on here so if I could remove it I'd be alot happier. I just see lots of flash tutorials for old versions like 2.2.1, not 2.3.4. Wasn't sure if it would be compatible still or not. I just want my phone to be like one I got from samsung, not one from Koodo. Proprietary bungholes. Lol.

Dont know if you noticed but ill quote the part for 2.3.4, download link is in the first post of the "how to root-thread".
"E. Unrooting for 2.3.3/2.3.4/2.3.5 (Thanks to ingbrzy):
1) Download attached file called unroot.zip and copy it to your sdcard
2) Turn off your phone
3) Press POWER+HOME BUTTON
4) Select update from sdcard, select the file unroot.zip
5) After the update completed - reboot
6) Now you have rooted S5830"
In 2.1.1 you wont be able to chose zip, dont know if that is the case for you. But if that is the case simply change the unroot.zip to update, then chose to update your phone and it will automatically search and chose it.
Gingerbreak exploit works for Ace right?
Thanks man! I didn't find that thread. I just came to my phone section and read the sticky but it didn't advise me so.

Revision3 [I605VRALJB]

About The ROM
Revision is based on I605VRALJB. Also, it's been specifically designed to be the most stable image to fall back on before or after flashing kernels, recoveries or ROMs. It will put your device into the MOST working condition possible currently. The only more possibly stable image would be the one your device came with and we don't have that.
What is Revision?
Revision is a stepping stone. It puts your device into a relatively stock, and known working condition.
Tweaks
I added the following tweaks to the ROM for usability and hackability.
Carrier Unlocked for AT&T network.
Rooted with ERD Chainfire's SuperSU
Bash
Busybox
i2cdetect, i2cdump, i2cget, i2cset
ipctool
strace
tcmpdump
viewmem
PARAMS: UART Logging Increased
PARAMS: UART Root Prompt at battery charging
PARAMS: UART Shell terminal during normal operations
The PARAMS will be available in a future CASUAL application for testing.
Download Revision3 ROM repacked
Troubleshooting
Windows users: First uninstall PDANET drivers, then install Samsung Kies.
Here's some notes I wanted to record:
Uncompressing a Samsung System image
Code:
./ext4_utils/simg2img ./originalsystem.img ./working.img
Compressing a Samsung Image
Code:
sync; sudo ./ext4_utils/make_ext4fs -s -l 1792M -a ./temp ./system.img /path/to/mounted image
Create a tar.md5.gz file from a set of images..
Code:
tar -H ustar -c boot.img hidden.img modem.bin param.bin recovery.img system.img tz.img sboot.bin>./Revision1.tar;sync md5sum Revision1.tar >> Revision1.tar; mv Revision1.tar Revision1.tar.md5; sync; gzip Revision1.tar.md5 -c -v >Revision1.tar.md5.gz;
the tools are available on the internet.
Revision1: initial release
Revision2: Fixed Baseband issue. The PARAMS were to blame for this. Removed features to add functionality.
Revision3: Carrier Unlock for AT&T.. needs more work to get rid of Verizon warning. Thanks Joder for the APN info.
Revision3 repacked: apparently there was an issue with the uploaded Revision3. Repacked is a properly repackaged version of Revision3.
thx

[Q] Length of time to root Incredible 4g

Ok, I tried to post this in the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE All-In-One Toolkit V2.1 [1-31-2013] thread, but I don't have enough posts to be allowed to post there.
I started the root process, and got to the point where I was asked to accept the "fake" restore, and NOT accept it, however after letting this portion run for close to an hour, I unplugged the phone. How much time should this step take? Also, what is the time frame from start to finish to root the phone using the toolkit?
Thanks guys!

Ok, the errors were what was taking forever. Are you saying that once they start I can accept the restore, and not to wait until they are done and I get back to a prompt on the CMD window?
Also I didn't think the all in one worked. Check out mdmower's unlock script.

you need to acept restore for exploit to work properly
I couldn't get the root to work. It told me to open a hex editor and look for a specific value, but the value in my file didn't match what they said it would, and as a result I had to perform a factory reset. Oh well.

The developer of that all-in-one app doesn't stop by this forum section very often. You're better off following one of these threads:
Team Infernal FakeCid AUTOMATIC bootloader unlock
[Script] Automated Unlock/SuperCID/Temp-Root scripts for Windows and Linux
Thanks mdmower! I think I've decided not to root the phone, since I can't find one that seems to work. I'm not looking for a new OS, just wanted to root it, mainly to get rid of some of the bloat apps.

It's not difficult with mdmower's automated script. I know very little about this process and I had no trouble performing the procedure by myself. I recommend the superSU package to flash in to get the phone rooted. I did this a few weeks ago and it's working great.

[Q] Att Tribute/Huawei Y536-A1 Walmart phone no CWM?

My rooted HTC Inspire broke so I brought an "Att Tribute" phone from walmart as it has decent specs for 100 bucks(as far as I know). The phone, though, doesn't seem to have much support going for it. Huawei's website doesn't even list it(They have a 530 which isn't quite the same). I can't find any info, any way to root it(I did unlock it using the unlock code and adb), but CWM doesn't support it directly, and emotionUI 3.0's site doesn't list it to upgrade.
Does anyone have any idea how to get this phone rooted and mod'ed? (I'd like to install a custom rom on it like I did with my HTC)
I'd imagine this phone would have someone widespread use being a walmart phone?
Need unlock code
Could you please tell me from which website you got unlock code and how much you paid for that ..

I used the coupon code 1$offshare to $1 off also
I haven't gotten the code yet. I'll update when it comes in
EDIT: just got the email with the unlock code. worked great. now the phone is working on my prepaid T-Mobile $30 plan. I did a speed test and got 10 MB down

I'll be getting this phone on Tuesday, but I've already played around with it considering my uncle bought one. It seems like a steal for only $40(Black Friday Sale). I'd like to root mine as well, hopefully we can find something in the coming days or weeks. Also been looking for cases and screen protectors.

I got it for free by emailing huawei. There is a site that has a form you have to fill out that you email them with the information. They will send you the code in a few days.
I have not been able to root the phone though. No root software supports the phone. Trying to manually root it but isn't going well. (you can't download the rom off the emu rom site because it's not listed

Stretto,

Yes. They need to at least release an update for it fixing the bugs.
I made a main thread for the phone...I hope you all don't mind.
Too many threads all over the subforums here. Let's make this link THE place for our phone.
Hope you don't mind.

It looks like there is a custom root image and rom available. Unfortunately I screwed up my recovery rom so I can't install anything ;/ Can anyone extract the factory recovery and upload it so I can get mine working and install these new roms?
Thanks

Factory/STock Recovery: NOT FLASHABLE, unzip it to get the .img file.
Perhaps a small bounty for a custom recovery is in order?
It may get a dev interested.
Please post in it to keep it up on the first page maybe/hopefully before it gets buried on page 4 of the forum

Flashed but only blue light blinking in recovery mode. Not booting up.
adb reboot recovery
fastboot flash recovery Stock_Recovery
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Then black screen with the blue power light blinking.
I can hold both the vol + - and power and get it to auto update the update.zip on the sdcard.
The file you sent is about 8MB. This is about the same size as the boot rom. Is this the recovery(the thing that lets you select different stuff) or the fastboot bootloader thing?
Somehow I think the recovery was restored. when I did the vol + - it updated to stock(or whatever I had on the disk, not sure). Then I used adb to reboot into recovery and was able to get the ability to update(pretty limited choices, I guess it's stock recovery and not twrp).
Anyways, I guess I can now update the os if that works....
It is the stock recovery from my Flashify backup.
Adb reboot recovery don't do first.
Fastboot flash recovery Stock_Recovery
Then reboot into recovery.

Hi there. I know this is quite late, but, I have the phone, and rooted it today. You can root it with this application called KingoROOT. You need to plug in your phone before you start the application.
