Just flashed Herodroid .3
Gotta say, good speed, seems nice. But what is there that 2.1 offers that 1.5 doesn't?
Besides the market, and a few icons here and there, are there any significant changes in 2.1? There is maps as well, correct? edit - excuse me, there is also the pinch to zoom out on the home screen to view all windows (which i find a little pointless, as I barely need 3 home screens to fill what I need. it is almost more hassle to have to use two hands to pinch out and view the screens than it is to just slide to the desired screen. sort of like polishing the worlds most perfect diamond? its fine, and imo was kind of a lame feature to introduce that perhaps they added to compensate for everything else 2.1 could have had in it? maybe im being too harsh, this is also a very long parentheses section.. just my 2 cents)
Maybe I have my panties in a bunch because I came from Mrbang's 1.5 super performance ROM and everything ran smooth as silk. My camera also doesn't make a freaky sound when I take pictures on 1.5 ROMS.
One of my biggest pet peaves right now is how Gameboid runs on 2.1 rom! Its just awful! So laggy!
Is this the roms fault or Gameboid?
I want my pokemon to run smoother than a ****ing GBA!
I just don't think jumping over to 2.1 is worth it for me just yet, I'm getting along just fine with 1.5
Plus, Manup456's theme looks ridiculously good.
First, all 2.1 roms are NOT offical ones, if they have problems I think you can either accept it or go away, instead of complaining about existing ones. It's you who's going to choose your rom, not others.
Your another question, benifits of 2.1. It's quite clear.
Google maps' lastest version and goggle ONLY run on 2.1 and new gmail/contact apps come with it. New Market, new HTC widgets. Compare them with your Gameboid, which one is more important.
Oh, and I'm quite sure many developers are working on 2.1 now, I think Gameboid will soon have a better performance.
(Why not try a psp as universal game machine? it run almost all previous game (including playstation1/Gameboy/FamilyComputer and so on..)according to me. Additionally Games drain your battery quite fast.)
I use the iPod Touch for gaming and music.
It's served me pretty well; games are often MUCH cheaper than the DS/PSP versions yet pack the same amounts of content; battery life is awesome and if I ever need the web on it I can simply wireless tether.
Lpts of BT profiles... file transfer... SPP... yummy...
For me, the biggest advantage of 2.1 is the improved browser. I find it much quicker than the 1.5 browser.
I'm back on 1.5 for now though, until the performance issues in 2.1 are fixed. We run on a very early kernel for 2.1, which isn't fully optimized yet. The official release should include a much faster kernel.

Whoa no way! THEY ARENT OFFICIAL!? I know lol..
2.1 has a few nifty things, but I think I'm going to wait for the official release, then use a ROM based off of that! I'm looking forward to the new kernel as well.
For now, gameboid is more important to me Only because I haven't beat Sapphire yet haha. I have a psp, but the convenience of having my phone all the time though is unbeatable MrBangs ROM I believe is incomparable to any other ROM out right now in terms of speed.
Ok, so I tried the new netflix .apk on the stock G-tablet rom, and it would refuse to play video.
I had seen people mention it working perfectly on Cyanogen Mod 7, so I picked up the most recent stable CM7, and flashed it. Works great. But I'm noticing the Tablet is a bit slower in other areas now- Just heard that Gingerbread and our display drivers are having trouble with acceleration?
So, I'd like the speed of a Froyo rom, but are any compatible with Netflix?
By default CM7.0.3 is under clocked. Go to Settings/Performance and adjust Max CPU to say 1.2GHz or even 1.4GHz. And your tablet will be working even faster then stock Froyo ROM.
someboy on another website got Netflix working on Brilliant Corners. He's now working on getting it to work on Vegan-Tab (since they are essentially the same)
unfortunately, the green bar at the bottom is still present, but he's attempting to tweak it to get it to go away. He spent about 2 hours yesterday getting Netflix ot stream video...give him a week and I suppose it will more than likely be perfected.
Of course, you won't find any information about this here on XDA...
I actually dropped a post on the VEGAn thread (it does work there, as well). And I'm going to sporatically post here - I think enough time has passed, and things are a little less crazy than they were a month back - at least as far as I can tell.
Caveats are the green bar and strange color banding - this is essentially a hack of the libs in stock 3588 that somehow make Netflix work. Also, I've heard that the hack breaks the YouTube app, so it's certainly not perfect.
But, if you have to have your Netflix, I guess it's better than nothing at all. I'm not sure if this is fixable because I don't even know why the 3588 libs work in the first place.

roebeet posted the fix here too in the vegan tab 5.1.1 thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14491114&postcount=1680
I'm happy just to see him post on xda again.
edit: nevermind, the man himself beat me in my slowness.

Yes, I'm aware of the green line and color shift problem, I have that on my LG Optimus as well. But something CM7 does seems to fix that completely (on the Optimus, too). I've heard it has to do with the way the LCD is accessed, but I have no idea.
So as far as "better than nothing", CM7 runs it PERFECTLY. But I'm not happy with the overall speed of the device. Perhaps I'll look into overclocking as was suggested earlier here. Still, even with the overclock I've heard that CM7 (or rather, gingerbread) lacks hardware acceleration, which means I'd be overclocking and using more juice just to keep up, wouldn't it?
"Better than nothing at all" meaning on a modded Froyo ROM, not CM7.
Some people had asked for this given that 3588 stock was known to work (with the color issues), so I spent several hours yesterday trying to figure out why.

As I understand problem with Netflix - inside Netfilx.apk there are somewhat 5 different native libs/players to support different hardware. When there is a time to stream movie - java front-end (UI) just launches one of them accordingly.
It's happened that CM7.0.3 DRM/OMX stack fulfilled one of the players requirements (actually the second one - libnetflix_device2.so), so it does streaming fine.
There is no way, somebody would disassemble one of those 5 players and make it work on general hardware without source code and/or deep knowledge about Netflix streaming protocol - that would be kind of hacking Netflix protocol... well, may be it's possible but VERY VERY non trivial.
This will leave us a one of two possibilities:
first one, wait for Netflix to support more hardware... I cannot tell that they anxious to support even legit Android HC tablets such as Xoom, Transformer, Samsung 10.1 I/O...
second, make that DRM/OMX stack happened on particular hardware by joggling with libs from another Android device where Netflix is working...
Speaking about CM7.0.3 - I was on a fence regarding hardware acceleration. But all I lost since I have flashed CM7 - ability to play 1080p wmv/wma coded video.
All HD contents I have, usually have AC3/DTS sound tracks in them and those does not have hardware decoder, so I'm forced to use software decoder anyway and it does fine on 720p.
Btw, difference in current consumption is not that big of a deal... I would say it's about 30-40mA when CPU is doing software decoding vs. hardware. Or it's about 10-12% (300mA vs. 330mA).
I hope all of that will help to make informative decision.
Thanks for all the helpful responses.
Wondering if there are any updates on this yet- any froyo roms play netflix as well as cm7 yet? I see netflix updated their app, but doesnt seem to be supporting more devices.
Im looking to see some feedback from regular users who have attempted and are using the second alpha.
How usable is it really?
To be honest, webos, while is wonderful, with the lack of apps its quite not useable. i mean, i enjoy the pad, but it does not pull me to spend a lot of time with it like my smartphone did.
so.. How is android at this develoment stage?
Thanks
a few of the hardware features are better, but i stuck with A1 mainly because of the stability, and most of the problems is has can be corrected yourself using apps and doing some minor tweaks.
i did check it out, but from my own experience, A1 was better.
Currently, I spend more time in webOS because my TP is more of a toy right now. I don't need or use it for work. CM alpha for me has been rather stable, with only a minor WiFi glitch that is solved by turning off the radio, and turning it back on. All my usual apps run fine, with no more instability than on my phone. Hope this helps.
Sent from my very "non-stock" TP.
alpha 2.1 is MORE stable than alpha 1. They fixed some of the sleep issues (but it still has some) but most importantly, alpha 2 charges properly from the touchstone dock. compared to webos, alpha 1 is a tossup. the problem with webos is not the apps. The webos version that came on my touchpad wasterribly buggy alpha level software. The new version that just came out mayhelp that though. Alpha 2 inky opinion has an edge over webos (at least the version i was using) as a few of the most critical bugs are fixed. you WILL have to do some tweaking though to get it working more or less right. If you expect to throw cm7 inane have a perfect experience on first boot, your going to be dissapointed.
I haven't had any 'problems' with A2.1 - sometimes it doesn't want to resume from sleep after a long time but - whatever - it's an alpha build - the speed and usability of it far outweigh any minor problems it may still have
Haven't had to do any tweaking other than personal preferences (I use Launcher Pro instead of ADW) etc.....sync'd Titanium Backup from my phone to Dropbox and then sync'd it to my TouchPad and was able to restore all the apps/games etc from my phone.
Oh and it plays Plants vs Zombies really well too
I use alpha 2.1 as my daily driver for the touchpad. After several days with it, I nook has been given to my wife. I I have had no issues with this build and have had no problems with any apps I have placed on it. I boot into webos seldom as cm7 does everything I want to do. My latest quadrant score was 3561 running at 1.7 GHz with the governor set to performance. I would recommend this alpha to anyone who can find their way around a command line (for instillation). It can only get better from here.

make sure you use alpha 2.1 and not alpha 2a
in my experience it has been running great and has been running on my TP since release.

Do you have any issues rebooting to alpha 2? I have had to restore to alpha 1 twice in order to reboot to cm7 .
Weird thing is since my first time rebooting to web os from cm7, I could not reboot or flash alpha 1 or 2 without a boot loop.
Only thing that has worked is restoring alpha 1 ,which thankfully I had backed up, and then adding alpha 2.
HTC Vision(G2), meXdroidmod Ghost Chili AIO.
Alpha 2.1 has been nothing but stellar for me. For an Alpha build, this is amazing!
Google Docs FCs on me. Oh well! I mainly use my TP for reading books (Kobo reader does an amazing job for .epub files).
Ive not had the sleep of death yet, i just use the wall charger and charges perfectly and my battery is amazing. Nothing to complain about so far.
Alpha 2.1 is superb, a couple of apps force closing but apart from that it is awesome...
It dual boots, so you will still have WebOS, if you dislike Android on your TP - remove it...

I'd say it's very stable as a daily driver. I also get a few force closes here and there but nothing too debilitating.I've themed and downloaded multiple apps and they all breeze through pretty quickly. Emulators, YouTube HQ, Vevo HQ, all work pretty well. Ironically I had never opened my TouchPad until yesterday but the ten minutes I had to use it I hated WebOS. Seems ok but stuck and I hate the little dots when I press. Only thing I couldn't get to work was a 720p MKV on MVideoPlayer but I assume some sort of graphics drivers have yet to be ironed out and I can live without. WiFi works great and I was surprised that even the camera worked for Skype, etc. At $99 this is definitely the deal of the year for me. giving my Nook Color to my daughter.
Try mobo video player from the market. I have had very good results with various formats.BTW, the little dots on the screen in webos can be turned off in advanced settings.
Overall, cm7 a2.1 is stable and very fast. In answer to the question above on rebooting, I have not tried alpha 2. With alpha 2.1, I have never had any trouble switching between webos and cm7. Just remember to set the os you want to boot in the moboot settings when you first start up or boot and hold the volume up key to boot into webos.

Just loaded it last night finally after fighting with Win7 and drivers to get it installed, but so far its great. I am having a charging issue though, so still trying to figure that one out. The only app so far that hasn't worked is WeatherBug which I really miss, but I can live without if needed.
Can anyone tell me if the TP on CM7A2 can handle all the games on the android market? For example games from glusoft like NovaHD2.
Can it play hd videos using flash through the browser without a lot of lag(icefilms and such sites)
Im mostly going to be using it for gaming and video streaming
any help is greatly appreciated thanks.
most of those games require chainfire3D+plugins to run because they arent compatible with the stock drivers
id post the guide thread thats in rootz wiki but apparently its not allowed, but its easy enough to find, its on the 3rd or 4th page of the TP threads, called "Chainfire3D guide" or something like that
Can anyone recomend stable Rom for tp which is pretty stable and has everything working (gapps , WiFi)...
Wrong section. And none are stable fully yet.

As Leo said there are no stable roms out, currently there are only 2 roms as it stands, Cyanogen's CM7 who's running Alpha 3 and XRON's CM7 build.
Personally I've been running CM7 Alpha 3 with no huge issues. The screen will freeze here and there, but a reboot fixes it with no problem, everything seems to work, gapps, wifi, my apps are smooth as butter and my movies and music sound amazing. If your looking for something stable stick with WebOS until Cyanogen puts out a stable rom, perhaps it'll include an easy install, as the current install is a bit tricky and even the 'detailed' tutorial posts on installation leave some parts out.
there is that other "no credit" ROM in the general forum (where this thread should belong) and actually that's working better for me than alpha 3 and xron
although that said it is a bit difficult at 1st cuz it's in chinese and you have to reset it to english....etc etc...then the keyboard....then a reboot

you also excluded MIUI on purpose?
As XRON is build from CM7, and so the rest are I believe.. there is by means only 1 ROM with different mods around.. well.. they're all based on CM7..that's what I'm trying to say.. not that they have the same flaws and equal each other.. but the base is the same?

To answer op, CM7 for the Touchpad is actually pretty stable. I'm running 3.5 Alpha from the CM team and it is smooth as butter. Unlike webOS for the TP, I can even use my blutooth keyboard + mouse on Android.
To whoever said it was difficult, I gotta say that's bs. It's definitely no more difficult than installing Preware on your TP, and it's worth it for added functionality. The most annoying problem was how long downloading everything took. Having all the apps Android has alone makes it worth installing.
I ran the N64 emulator on Android and it ran perfectly. Haven't tested other games yet, but I don't play many games anyway. Is it as smooth as my SGS II I777? Nah. But it IS smoother than many other Android tablets and phones that are dualcore.
Finally, a heads up for the only program I saw stutter: Netflix doesn't play as smoothly as I'd like, and but it plays good enough to not ragequit. I'm not sure if all video playback is like that, but again, it's not so bad that you couldn't watch your videos - just don't expect them to play as smoothly as a native android phone or tablet. The next thing that might bother you on 3.5 Alpha is the lack of useful headphone jack. When you plug your headphones in, the audio still comes out the speaker, but honestly, I don't see myself or anyone reasonably using their TP as a media player while in a gym or other public settings.

actually my rom is based on CM 3.5 and the headphone jack is just fine. But agree with how you put all else.
I am still on this ROM and I want to switch but I can't find anything that gets the kind of battery life this ROMs gets even fat n creamy doesn't really compare I wish oat was back because I always have to do a recharge after browsing the internet for a while with most ROMs this one I recharge every other day.

Try SGA's AOKPandCM9remix it was started by SGA when oats pulled his Rom.
If you like OaT's ROM, why change?

I am currently happy with the SGA Fat 'n Creamy but intend to try is AOKP/CM9 re-mix soon. But if you want to try an alternative ROM that was very stable, very smooth, and had great battery life, you might like to try RandomROM's Falcon 1.3. AOKP-based and pretty cool. Note: he hasn't integrated the camera into the ROM yet (whereas SGA has in his ROMs), so if camera is important you are better off with SGA's ROMs or the CM9 nightly with camera.
http://randomkings.wordpress.com/2012/10/22/hp-touchpad-falcon-1-3/
I really enjoyed O.A.T's LnT BA - great battery life, fast and smooth, and good and loud audio! I am currently running CM9 nightly on one TP and CM10 Preview on the other. Would really enjoy to see a LnT BA based on current CM10!
OaT's new JB Rom
OaT has posted a new JB-based LnT Rom.
Only running it for a few hours, but so far, so good. No random reboots.
No BA in new OAT LnT JB

I think it means Beats Audio which was an optional feature on his CM9 Rom . How much difference it makes I'm not sure ,some wanted it and others didn't /couldn't tell the difference .

Ahh, I see, thanks. I thought it was something important, perhaps related to battery (eg. "battery advancement"). I know the original TP with webOS had Beats built in, so I am guessing OaT figured a way to integrate that into his ROM, but without a Beats headset I wouldn't really know, and to be honest, the times I have used even the most expensive Beats headphones at stores I have found them too bass heavy and prefer other brands like Sennheiser.
If audio performance is really a major factor, there are lots of other ways to change the sound, including DSP Manager (which may be already included... I have it),, WinAmp, I happen to already like the sound through my TouchPad, but to me the what you are listing through make way more difference than any app or frequency modifications. I use a Monster Clarity mini speaker via bluetooth or a really cheap set of Sennheiser headphones (love to get a pair of Sennheiser HD280s... they kill Beats headphones IMO for less than $100).
I have spent a day with OaTs new ROM and haven't had a problem at all. The ROM is super smooth and fast in transitions, all apps I have tried seem to work (Netflix, Skype, camera, audio). I switched back to the stock Browser (had been using Boat and Maxthon on previous ICS ROMs) but the stock browsers seems faster and shows Flash on JB. My one app challenge (Spashtop) seems an issue on the Spashtop side since I am also having a prob with my GB phone (appears the people at Splashtop are trying to raise additional subscription revenues... may need to drop them). I did pay $2 for the JB+ camera I believe you are using... works fine, and especially like that the zoom features works for both still and camcorder.
Amazes me that so much work has happened recently on the TouchPad, a now outdated and abandoned hardware platform designed to run webOS, where dedicated consumer/developers have back-engineered a working camera and the latest Android operating system (in comparison, my HTC Android cell phone (at one time considered HTC's LTE leader), is running two versions old Android (Gingerbread) and HTC/Verizon have missed their targeted release of ICS by months and will likely never offer ICS on the phone. Folks here should feel especially fortunate for the work the devs have and continue to do.

I have partial hearing loss and when I travel by plane, I like to watch movies on my touchpad. I could actually hear the movies in WebOS, but I had to convert to a crappy format to get them to play. In most android builds I can't get the volume up high enough to hear the speech, but I could with his BA builds. I hope he reads these since I don't have enough posts to comment on his actual thread.

What "crappy" format did you convert to/why? Did you know that for WebOS there are several volume enhancers /boosters available from Preware .
I am using the new oats and MX player and if you use the built-in DSPManager you should be able to adjust the various frequency ranges.
I have done this for my daughter who suffers from a hearing problem .
I hope this helps with whatever you choose to watch your movies through either WebOS or Android . Happy flying .
Not sure what the BA option is, I have been running this from for a few days now and it has really breathed new life in my touchpad!
One thing of note, after installing it you need to flash his O&T gapps, YouTube will need to be installed over Google play along with Google play services (which you will be prompted to install when trying to install YouTube)
Google Chrome does not work well, but the stock browser is beauty.
