FlexT9 keyboard free on Amazon Appstore today (Swype alternative) - Nook Color Themes and Apps

FlexT9 keyboard is the featured free app today on Amazon Appstore.
This is a great alternative for anyone who hasn't been able to get Swype working on their Nook. It lets you enter text by tracing or tapping keys as well as speaking words and drawing letters and symbols.

Wow, amazing! More features than Swype and not a pain in the ass to install!

Very nice, thanks!

Definitely a must have app if you want to write on your tablet for any amount of time. Becomes second nature very quickly.

any of you running stock 1.2?

Wish this app was available in Canada. Or the Amazon Store for that matter.

Essential apps

Had my Streak since Monday after finally deciding against the HD2. I've been a winmo user for years but didn't like the idea of being stuck with 6.5 for another 18 months.
I had built up a huge selection of fave apps for my HD and was reluctant to let some of them go, so I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for everyone's essential apps for the Streak.
Having only had the "phone!" for a few days, here's a couple of apps i'm liking so far:
1. RockPlayer - play avi files and more.
2. Google Navigation - although comes shipped in UK.
3. MyPlayer - BBC iPlayer.
4. AppKiller - although this is the only task manager i have tried so far.
5. EsFileExplorer - again the only one tried so far.
6. XDA app - nice interface and faster than using the browser.
7. ColourUp - i love editing photos and this is pretty cool.
8. Google SkyMap - works brilliantly.
9. Swype - only just started using this, for me it's brilliant.
Ok, there's my keepers for now, how about yours? I've not really found any great games that fit will on the screen yet although i'm liking Winds Of Steel.
Same as yours really, but would like to add Astro file explorer - great for installing apps outside market. And if you like reading as much as i do Laputa is a awesome ebook reader with ipad style bookshelf and page turning and loads of online books.
Tried quite a few games and at the mo playing Zenonia little rpg ala zelda which is a nice enough. Game Boid is a great emulator for all those classics. Mazeoid is a free pac man game runs great on the streak.
Im experimenting with different keyboards, the dell one works great but the numpad throws off the whole symmetry. Ive tried smart keyboard which is quite nice with lots of skins, but i found it slow so went back. Any suggestions would be very welcome...
Gonna add a new one as of yesterday....kindle reader.
just bought a couple of books and woopee for some reason you can buy them at american prices. Lot cheaper than the UK store/mobipocket etc.
Oh yeah and Rockplayer...rocks...will probably be my first 'purchased' app once it get's released (I've not had a need for anything else that requires paying for yet.)
oops. forgot I don't play many games but Bonsai Blast is really addictive and fits the screen great.

Great, was looking for a decent ebook reader for the ebooks i already have, I also think the numeric keypad is a dumb thing - not thought about as it forces you to hold the streak lob-sided to type, as you, still looking for a decent alternative.

Yep, kindle reader looks lovely, but can't get it to work with the ebooks i "bought" from other sources. Will give the bonsai blast a try. Cheers.

Nice find, buy them cheap while you can
Gave Bonsai Blast a go and i agree looks great and a pretty fun and adictive thanks.
Kindle looks good but like Guest69 i have a collection of ebooks i need to be able to import, maybe this will be possible later...
Also found a few good widgets. Htc smooth calendar (other one was buggy) looks great, matching the dell theme better then the default and shows 3 appointments. VolumeWidget is on my home screen, gives you 3 buttons for preset volume profiles.
Finally the Zedge app is like the app store of ringtones, has search, preview and install functions. Theres also a wallpaper section, but i havent tried it as i have made my own seamless sets like the o2 wallpapers (cut up and resized some high res dual monitor wallpapers) ill post some here when i get a minute.
My favorite book reader is aldiko, and it has limited support for importing books as well as long as they are epub format.
Hi all,
Well I've had my Streak now for a little over 3 weeks and have now flashed my first custom Rom which comes Rooted and with Superuser permissions plus has allowed me to remove from the Rom the apps i had no need for.
So here are my installed apps in no particular order.
Astro File Manager: can be used to install apps that come as apk's as opposed to from the market
Barcode Scanner: easy way to install apps form QR codes or just reading Bar codes
3G Watchdog: Monitors your data use over 3G you can set your allowance and it will monitor and alert you
Live Calender: Will bring up upcoming Appointments on your Home screen
F1 Pocket 2010: all you need to stay up to date with F1
Moto GP Pocket 2010: all you need to stay up to date with Moto GP
iSyncr for PC: Easy transfer and sync of iTunes to your Streak
Google Sky Map: Map of the Stars and Planets
Engadget: Widget with scrolling updates
SystemPanelLite Task Manager:Shows you CPU and Memory use
myPlayer: BBC iPlayer
ShootMe: Screen Shots for Rooted devices
Speedtest.net Speed Test
Rock Player: Plays DivX Avi and many other formats in great quality.
Co Pilot Live: Sat Nav with POI'S and Speed Cameras
Gentle Alarm: Great Multiple Alarm app with some unique nice features
Seven Push E-Mail: Real time Push E-Mail with full folder support
Cloud List:Great: shopping or other list app also on line lists that can be shared with others
Tapatalk Pro: handy tool for posting on Forums
TVCatchup Mobile Live TV Streaming with lots of UK channels
Fring: Skype and IM chat app includes Skype Video chat
Superuser Permissions: allows rooted apps permission
Boot Explorer: File explorer and more for Rooted devices
Root Booter: Easy Normal, Recovery or Bootloader Reboot options
Boot Manager: Control over various options and apps on your device
Swype: simply the best keyboard and typing experience ever IMHO
I should mention although System Panel Lite is a task manager that's not what I'm using it for as it also shows CPU and Memory use along with all your Active applications and Inactive cached applications. Personally I'm just not using a task killer or killing any apps at all.
Wow having now made this list i can't believe just how many apps i have installed so far just as well the Streak comes with 2GB for installing them on.
Marc
is there a good Weather app out there
Is there an android application for windows live mail? I haven't found one.

@ Dogman, Mate whats the name of the Barcode reader you use thanks
Hi lufc
It's called Barcode Scanner and it works better then any I've ever used before literally as soon as you frame the QR code it identifies it and gives gives you the option to open the browser which actually opens the download store with the app ready to just hit for download. It still amazes me very time i use it to download a new app just how fast and simple it makes the whole procedure.

My FAVORITE app is Swype. A month ago they were letting people download the app again and I got it for my Nexus One .. I loved it because for some reason I was having a horrible time typing .. When I first got my Streak I typed on it for about 15 minutes and then downloaded Swype again and that is ALL I ever use. I made it the default program for any text and you can always type letter by letter if you are having problems with a certain word. On YouTube there are several GREAT instructional videos on swyping from the maker. I am pretty sure I am getting faster swyping than I was typing on my iphone.
Double post...
Thanks for the barcode scanner tip Marc, its real fast and accurate definitely a keeper.
ROFL @ "XDA_devs is rapidly becoming the McDs of the winmo world, sadly full of rude chavs demanding crap immediately.. "
As for swype, I gave it a try but I wasnt impressed, guess its a preference thing but I can type fast as hell in landscape with a normal kb so long as it can keep up. I found with swype it takes much more finger movement to type each word and you have to look at what you are doing more, not to mention smearing crap all over the screen...
Im still searching for a good alternative to dells stock kb, tried everything in the market with mixed results, but I think I'll just wait till the froyo update and try the ported htc multitouch kb.
@Cypher84
If you mess around with the settings for Swype you can change how long the trace shows for and the same for word prediction i have reduced the time for both which i have found has made the world of difference. Also now Swype has learnt most of my most commonly typed words I'm finding it incredibly fast and accurate and also it's quite forgiving if your not totally accurate. Also for the suggested word to be put in you just start the next word so now after just a short while using Swype it defiantly is my by far preferred method of text input. But like anything just because it's best for me doesn't mean it has to be for everyone else.

I had the same problem but you just need to do this
After you have installed and enabled swype
Open a text input box (what I do is open up the browser, go to google and then hold my finger down in the google search box)
Hold your finger down in this box until a menu appears "Input method"
select Input Method and then it should give you an option of Swype or Android Keyboard, select swype and now it will use that as default
Hope this helps

FlexT9 keyboard by Nuance. Swype who?!?

My all time favorite keyboard was ShapeWriter, but it was discontinued when the company was bought by Nuance, the makers of Dragon Dictate. It didn't have a voice input button, but its word prediction was unmatched by any other and newer keyboard apps out there.
Unfortunatley, it also didn't work well on the Nook as the resolution was set for smaller screen sizes.
Well, that keyboard is now back and it is incredible. The same great swiping technology and prediction, but also has a Dragon Dictate voice input button and the ability to write "grafitti" style. It is only $5 and definately worth your attention. Another feature I like is that the keyboard is displayed on the bottom and it does not bloat the input panel, so you can actually see the screen above the keyboard, this means you can see results showing up as you type in google search or market. Awesome stuff!
DO NOT BOTHER WITH SWYPE, this is the real deal!
And no, I do not work for Nuance.

Beta is beta, not free. And as I said, Swype is amateur next to this. I really tried to like Swype, but it is just so a$$ backwards in its implementation.

I don't really care for swiping style keyboards on my Nook, save that for my smaller screened phone. I personally dig Thumb Keyboard for the Nook myself.
FlexT9 (and SWYPE) update: Possible trouble
FlexT9 is now discontinued... actually has been for a while, now, but Nuance was very quiet about it. The FlexT9 page in the Google Play store suddenly isn't findable by search, but is still there. It's also still got a page (but it's tough to find) on the Nuance Mobility web site.
When/if someone goes to send a support message (to open a ticket) to discuss it with someone from Nuance, a message pops-up the instant you select "FlexT9" as the product about which you want to talk telling you that FlexT9 is dead, and that the new SWYPE app replaces it; and that for now, while it's in BETA, said new SWYPE app is free.
It's important to remember that even though we've all said, for a long time, that FlexT9 is better than SWYPE, that was back when they were separate companies. Nuance (the maker of FlexT9) bought SWYPE in October of 2011; and has been rumored to be combining the best of SWYPE with the best of FlexT9 and putting it all into the new made-by-Nuance SWYPE app for Android.
My review of FlexT9, though, that I just posted on its page in the Google Play Store pretty much sums-up the problem.
Posted by Gregg L. DesElms - August 1, 2012 - Version 2.0.2.0
WARNING! FlexT9 discontinued! Replaced by SWYPE!
I give it five stars because because FlexT9 really is the hands-down best Android keyboard app out there. But Nuance (its developer) has discontinued it; and the replacement is the new SWYPE keyboard, which Nuance now owns (it bought the SWYPE company in October 2011). When they were separate companies, lots of people said, in forums and whatnot, to get FlexT9 instead of SWYPE, and they were right because FlexT9 was better. As long as the new SWYPE incorporates everything that was in FlexT9 (and I think it does), then that's fine. Here's the problem, though: For the moment (as of this writing on 31 July 2012) while the new SWYPE is still in BETA, it's free. And so if the new SWYPE is actually a better-than-FlexT9 upgrade, then, fine... free is good. However, why would Nuance purchase SWYPE only to give it away? SWYPE will, no doubt, when it's out of BETA, eventually be paid/commercial, just like FlexT9 was. And that, too, is fine, except that if FlexT9 is discontinued with no further support, then shouldn't paying FlexT9 users get a free upgrade to the new SWYPE? I only purchased FlexT9 six months ago! Need I pay, again, for SWYPE when it's finally out of BETA? Is that really fair?

What apps would you like to see?

Hey guys,
Are there any (simple)tablet specific apps you guys would really like to see? I'm no star programmer(2nd year software eng. student with no experience before university) and I'm certainly not an android pro(really just got into android development in January) but I'll see what I can do. I've been working on some simple phone apps but I'd really like to get started with some apps for honeycomb.
If there are any fans of theoatmeal.com, I'm thinking my first honeycomb app will just be a simple viewer for his comics. Nothing complicated, just a list of comics on the side, with an image view which you can swipe to change panes in the comic and then some tabs at the top to filter(all, cats, grammar, food, animals, tech - just like on the website). I wish I could work on it this weekend but I'm leaving for my parent's in about half an hour and I don't have my laptop with me(just my galaxy tab 10.1).
Anyway, let me know what you'd like to see.
Automatic about :debug desktop view app.
A deviantart app so I can see images quicker and easier.
that's actually a good idea. It's really frustrating to have to put that in every time. Not sure how to do it exactly, but I doubt it would be too hard.
I've never used deviantart myself but that is something I could look into.
I'm thinking of trying to make an app that can send text messages when connected to a phone via bluetooth. Not sure if it will happen but it should be an interesting project. I was originally planning on doing it with google's push api but that would be more work and probably isn't necessary(do you really want to receive text messages on your tablet when it's not in range of your phone? I wouldn't).
That would be useful. Heck even away from the phone would be useful for many people. When "away" SMS gets forwarded to email or gv.
I believe blackberry playbook has a lot of functionality between phone and tablet. Anything to increase the handshake between android tablet phone would be great. Even if its a chrome2phone style sending a map or website back and forth.
Data recorder
For some reason the 3G watchdog app doesnt work correctly on my galaxy tab 10.1v. A working app designed for the tablet would be nice, unless other people have other suggestions I could try out.

I'm a student and would like to see more apps that I could use like the notebook app for the htc flyer. Something that looks professional and simple. Like having a word document on your tab. There's a few out there but none that are entirely convincing. From what i've heard there are apps for other tabs that can record lectures, have word recognition, among other really awesome things. Assus has a decent app for it too I guess, but i'd like to see it on the galaxy tab 10.1 forsure.

You can turn the word prediction on in keyboard settings for Samsung's keyboard. it's called XT9 prediction. Even the stock honeycomb keyboard does have prediction.
I wasn't entirely convinced by the stock keyboard nor Samsung's keyboard so I bought Thumb Keyboard from the Market. I haven't looked back since

Create a lockscreen replacement for honeycomb where you can define app shortcuts to place around the unlock circle similar to the unlock icon and drag the smaller circle to each shortcut to launch the app. Similar to sense 3.0 but for honeycomb!

book app for GT10.1

When I get my GT10.1 I plan to read a lot of books. I tried it on my DHD using Aldiko, but I think the screen is to small.

I'm wondering what book apps would you reccomend?

The google books app and kindle app are both fine, but I need the ability to sideload epub files, so...
I do wish you could limit the page length in aldiko though. One full screen (in portrait) is an awful lot of text.
Aldiko lets you load ePub files from your SD card. I used Aldiko heavily on my Evo 4G but I find myself preferring the Nook app on the tablet. It loads ePubs, splits the pages in two in landscape mode & has page transitions like you see in the Books app. I haven't tried Kindle, but Kobo also lets you load ePubs.
In general I like google book and like the animation of it. However, its still very poor when it comes to functionality. You can't highlight, write note, or annotate. The app by itself remember your last location but you cant mark a page. It still needs more work to be done as i think its unfinished app. I contacted google regarding that, and they said that they are still working to improve the app as its still and i quote "a baby"
I am gonna receive my Tab 10.1 tomorrow and as you have mentioned, i will be doing lots of reading as its one of the reasons i bought the tab. For the meaintime, I think I will go with the Kindle version unless otherwise, google impvorved their ebook.
I am using Nook. Kobo is also good. But anybody know if there is any book app which has built in English dictionary ( or atleast link to an external dictionary) so if you want to know meaning of a word you just highlight and option is there for meaning/synonymous . This is helpful for people for whom English is not first language.
I've tried quite a few, and I find Montano Reader the best for me. Full anotation and highlighting, bookmarking, side loading of epubs and PDF's. I will let you read almost anything.
Asus has a nice books app mybooks I think, they extracted from the transformer Not sure if its working on other tablets yet.

I'm all about Kindle. I guess it's partly because I have a lot of books there, and don't want to switch, but I like that it's not overly animated, and I can highlight and search in google, wikipedia, and see dictionary definitions directly from the page.
Kind of blows me away that google didn't add in the functionality to highlight and perform a google search.
I have tried pretty much every reader on the market after getting my gt10.1. Nook is probably does the best job of having all the desires features (thought definitely not perfect). Kindle and google books are lacking major features (most importantly highlighting, bookmarking etc + importing non-drm files). Third party apps like cool reader, aldiko and fbreader all have great functionality, but they lack the polished UI you get from the big names. So I chose Nook, because it has the most functionality to go with its polished look. If it had custom fonts it would be near perfect for me.
I've been using the Nook app so far for my limited reading. I tried that, a well as the Kindle app, and prefer the Nook app so far. Nook seems to have more formatting options and I like the "butter" color scheme for daylight reading - it's sort in between the white and sepia settings in Kindle(both of which are available in the Book app as well).
My biggest compliant so far is that text selection can be difficult. I haven't quite figured out how to consistently make a selection so far.

New Swype keyboard beta has Dragon integration works great!

I just saw that Swype has a new beta out on Engadget that integrates voice recognition from Dragon. Well, it installs with no problems on the Prime, and the voice recognition component is amazingly accurate. I thought that some of you may want to give it a try, so I posted a new thread.
This entire post was just "typed" with the new Swype voice recognition. It is pretty cool. http://beta.swype.com

I had been using Flex T9 keyboard for a while (made by the group that just purchased Swype), and loved the dragon dictation.
Tried the new beta of Swype yesterday, and it's the best keyboard IMHO for our tablet. I can't go back to regular typing since using swype-based keyboards, and the Swype keyboard allows you to miniaturize the keyboard to make swyping easy in both landscape and portrait mode.
Love it.
Typing right now from the keyboard you should probably go get it I can type very quickly and accurately
Thanks for the link. I am typing to you right now through Dragon dictation. While this does work very well it's hard to choose between this and thumb keyboard. I also have SLIDE It keyboard also. Being able to through and Dragon dictation in does come in handy though I have to admit. I might have to test out which is faster between the 3 that I have. I will try using this swipe for a while and see how it performs. It's going to be hard to choose. Slide it is just as good and is more customizable. I do like how I can shrink the Swype keyboard though. I'm just testing this out now so don't mind me if I sound (write) like a robot right now..lol
Thanks again!
Does this app not work with the Transformer Prime?
I am having difficulties installing the app, the url for downloading the installer states that it is not an android phone.
Does it support tablets?
EDIT:
Found the solution to my problem in the FAQ
I click the link in my activation email to download Swype, but I'm told that my phone is not an Android device, even though it is! What do I do?
This message means that you may have your browser in "desktop mode", or are using something other than the Android default browser (like Skyfire or Opera Mini). To turn the Mobile View setting back on in the Android browser - Open your browser settings (click menu > more > settings) and locate the option for "Mobile view." Click the checkmark next Mobile View if it is unchecked and retry the download link from your email. If the setting is enabled and you are still getting this error, please head to our forums for support.
