[APP] MoonGBA - the fastest gba emulator - Windows Mobile Apps and Games

MoonGBA - probably the fastest Game Boy Advance emulator for Windows Mobile platform made by Xiangpeng Chen. Freeware. I can't believe that there is no topic about this great app. Without sound enabled it works almost perfectly on my BenQ E72 with 230MHz omap processor and ~20MB of RAM. On my Blue Angel - what can I say - amazing! Unfortunately it doesn't work on my HTC Kaiser. But I'm sure it is the one of uncommon cases.

Advantages:
really fast rom emulation
runs on slower PDAs/smartphones
portrait, landscape left/right + fullscreen, fit to screen, vga screen view modes + "antialiasing"
frameskip + frame speed settings
*.sav files support
touch controlled pad (activated in settings)
Disadvantages:
only 3 save/load slots
not quite good sound emulation comparing to other emulators
noticed that it doesnt work on HTC Kaiser
Requirements:
Windows Mobile 5.0 >= based device
~200MHz processor for comfortable playing without sound (depends on processor model)
about 15MB RAM for loading 4/8MB roms; 20+ for loading 16MB roms
Download:
english translated 2.4.0 version - HERE (just run .exe file on your PPC/SM, config files will be created in the same directory)
author's website with newest chinese versions - HERE (up to 2.4.2)

Not working :-/
I tried running Pokemon Sapphire (.gba), Pokemon Yellow (.gbc), and Pokemon Blue (.gb). The gba file was the only one which didn't close the program. None of them were able to run though, I only only saw a white box when loading the gba file.
My device is the ATT Tilt2 (HTC Rhodium), WVGA, 528 MHZ. Free ram when loading the 16 MB rom, about 30-40 MB

nice!
nice app.. a way faster than pocketgba and morphgear.. it also saves in .sav format so you can use your save files from desktop gba emulators.. it also supports clock base events which pocketgba dont.. but it would be better if we can edit the virtual pads just like in morphgear because its own virtual pads are annoying cause it touches the screen..

Nice share, thanks!

@zyphuris55, MoonGBA is an Game Boy Advance emulator so it's able to open only *.gba roms. Shame that it doesn't work on Rhodium I see there is same problem as with Kaiser - white box after rom loading. I can suggest you to try the newest 2.4.2 version from developer's website. I didn't try and I don't know if it will work on Kaiser or Rhodium. Unfortunately 2.4.0 is the only one which is english translated.
@xxviii, yep, some time ago I tried to play Pokemon ( ) on PocketGBA but there were problems with ingame time settings. With MoonGBA there are no such problems. And about touch controlled pad question - Xiangpeng is working on it and there are fixes and improvements in newer versions, unfortunately in chinese language.
In general, it has some defects but MoonGBA is a great GBA emulator which works surprisingly fast, especially that its freeware and practically it isn't popular.

works great! just the sound could be improved. i´ll test the chinese 2.4.2 version...

Could be great
based on a very vey quick test, this is good.
Very fast on HD2, and the built in control pad is good. I'm just checking how LMT controller works wth it. GBA was one of the things i was booting android off SD for, so I'm really pleased to see this, thanks for starting this thread

with me it works on the rhodium with pokemon, but it isnt stable sometimes some random crashes...

thank you very much, it is the first GBA emulator that works perfectly on my touch pro. No HW button delay, speed is perfect everything is great

Great app,I'm searching for it.It works fine on my xperia x1.This is the first emulator for wm with support for 32mb rom,but the speed is low with full screen enabled.The virtual pad is very good.Great app

It works smooth on your Touch Pro? What ROM? It lags (Pokemon Emerald) quite much while using the 2x VGA mode, and that's with sound off. It performs similarly to my Treo, which is a good 230mhz slower than the TP. I do like how the hardware keyboard can be used, with some great wasd action
By comparison, MoonGBA runs too fast on my ancient HP iPAQ hx2495b (with sound off), and practically full speed with sound on. I suspect the Touch Pro's poor 2D performance is what makes it lag.

tried "fullscreen" mode instead of "2x vga"?

it works great!

It's actually worse at fullscreen. I've even tried version 2.4.2, which seems to do better on portrait mode, a bit laggy on landscape. I guess it's fine, but it doesn't explain how this modern device gets smoked by my hx2495b :/

i have a dual sim phone with wm 6.5 and moongba runs nearly perfect, BUT if i run moongba in fullscreen my second sim disappears... i can use it and everything, but i cannot see the reception field... and when someone calls me the call from sim 1 and the call from sim 2 layers are both displayed....
does somebody knows a trick or a fix for this? i mean my phone and this app are from china why do they not support each other^^

maybe try newer version from developer's website

Wow you have one of those Dual-sim WM phones It might simply be because you have a little bit resources available, such as RAM and CPU. For example, in my Touch Pro, when I left the radio on, the emulator was okay, but when I tried to turn it off, it took awhile to actually get to my comm manager. The Verizon TP has less RAM than the regular TP, so I'm not surprised.
I was using Moon 2.4.2.

well, I don't know how is MoonGBA working, which display method it uses, GDI, DirectDraw or something, there is no information about that. It's not well optimized for newer devices. Maybe it is the producers fault which are making some 3D flashing blinking scrolling things, leaving support for 2D... I hope there will be newer versions, maybe rewritten and optimized, who knows.

jep that is the same thing i thought... maybe he made the fullscreen with some 3d super mega stuff und this overrides the layer of the second sim... really crappy -.-
maybe someone can get the source code from the developer and rewrites it... i think he writes on his site, that he will continue with a android version and not with updates on the wm version... or does someone can speak chinese and could mail him my problem?^^

I honestly believe MoonGBA uses the 2D GDI processing of WM, or DirectDraw. Reason why I can tell is that my iPAQ has a SKTools benchmark of 1200+, while my Touch Pro is right there with my Treo at 700+. For example, the Game Atomic Cannon, it is super fast on my iPAQ, while it lags on my Touch Pro. The same thing with video playback, TCPMP in DirectDraw mode is horrible on my Touch Pro, and ok in my iPAQ.
So my conclusion is, since the Windows Mobile UI depends on the 2D processing of your device, there won't be enough CPU to process anything related to the screen because MoonGBA uses up 100% CPU. I have confirmed this with Wakutask (taskbar manager) running as well as BatteryClock (Taskbar indicators), where those programs were being displayed poorly or not updating in time (respectively).

Benchmarking all current roms [Updated 02/07/09]

So I am new to the PPC world. I just got my Titan a little over a week ago and it's my first one. Since getting it I have flashed it probably 25 times and have completely become obsessed with it. I didn't find any kind of benchmarking on all of the current roms that are out right now, so I decided I would go ahead and do it. There is nothing scientific about this. It's not really fair to compare some of the roms considering one like dcd comes completely stripped down versus Reloaded that has lots of apps, m2d, TouchFLO, etc. For this reason I have a "best" in each category which DCD won almost every time, and then a "best non-dcd". But the data should still help some people decide what rom they might want to use.
I did each one the same way. Flashed the rom, did a hard reset, installed spb benchmark and oxios hibernate if the rom didn’t include it. I then did a soft reset and checked free ram and then ran oxios and logged ram after that. I then ran benchmark and saved the results.
There are only a couple of things worth mentioning and both are about PPCKitchen. I did a basic but not stripped down rom. I included what apps I would typically use. It was a rom very close to Reloaded but with less stuff in it. I know it’s a kitchen so anyone doing this might come up with different results. Secondly is that I was unable to successfully complete the Arkaball test while running the PPCKitchen rom without it freezing, so you will see a 0 as a result in that test.
I performed the following tests in Spb benchmark:
File system tests
Carried out to measure the speed of working with files:
* Read 1 MB file
* Copy 1 MB file
* Read 10KBx100 files
* Copy 10KBx100 files
* Directory list of 2000 files
* Internal database read
Graphics tests
Carried out to measure target Pocket PC's graphics subsystem performance:
* DDB BitBlt
* DIB BitBlt
* GAPI BitBlt
Miscellaneous Tests
* Compress 1 MB file using ZIP
* Decompress 1024x768 JPEG file
* Arkaball frames per second
* CPU test: Whetstones MFLOPS
* CPU test: Whetstones MOPS
* CPU test: Whetstones MWIPS
* Copy 1MB using memcpy
The results were surprising in some ways but obvious in others. In most cases the rom with the most amount of free memory performed the best, but you will see that’s not true in every case. I will start off with free memory for each rom.
Oh and it's important to note that the results are how many ms (milliseconds) it took the test to finish. So a higher bar in the graph is actually worse, except for free memory of course.
This is going to be split across a lot of posts because apparently I can’t link more than 4 images per post.
Edit: Compressed results to fewer graphics, also making it easier to read and compare.

Note: nuerom3-201 in high memory mode actually LOST ram when running Oxios after boot. I tested multiple times. The only theory I have is there is actually so much free memory that you are seeing the memory that Oxios uses. Unfortunately all this free ram was not reflected in the benchmarks as high memory mode actually performed worse than low memory in almost every test.
Note 2: The current results do not show post-Oxios because I am not the only one benchmarking and I don't have Oxios results for all tests.
PPCKitchen Roms Results
As requested, I have tested all 4 current builds that come up in PPCKitchen. I built them all the same way and tested them the same way. I rebuilt and re-tested 20931 despite having tested it right above this one to make sure my results were consistent.
All roms were built using the following options:
sprint carrier, vistahide battery gauge, skip welcome, comm manager 6-button flat, office excel, office powerpoint, office word, adobe reader, total commander file explorer, htc enlarge start menu, htc titan camera, arcsoft mms 5, nueled, nuelight, oxios memory, touchflo 2d dialer, icontact, no sms sent notification, htc touch keyboard, manila 2d, manila 2d customizer, ftouchflo.
These options were chosen for no reason other than it's what I would use to build a rom. Obviously changing these options would result in different benchmarking results, so the results are kind of subjective.
All roms were created in PPCKitchen, flashed, hard reset, install spb benchmark, soft reset, check ram and run oxios, then benchmarked.

I'll be testing with Spb benchmark as well over the weekend .. will be testing
dcd4.1 / 3.2.6 / R4R / TR1.3.2 and T6.5.. guess I'll post up my results here
as well, also hope they will not be conflicting .. but confirming ..
Thanks and nice job..
Well after a long night / morning of testing .. here are my results ..
Using SPB 1.6 PDA test tool ..
Some Notes:
Because ALL DCD ROMs has an great advantage over other ROMs; being that
All DCD ROMs are bare bone, nothing loaded type of base rom .. I decided
to unselect Touch FLO from the R4R, Titan Reloaded and WM6.5 Roms,
this help to level the play field, however the TouchFLO Roms, still had a few
little apps still running, like battery monitor, active task bar manager,
2d dialers, etc.. all running in the bg..
Test configuration:
* TouchFLO disable or removed..
* Today items are re-enable
* screen capture running (used 195k of ram)
Battery monitor, was running during R4R and TR 1.3.2, also active task bar
manager was running during WM6.5 and TR 1.3.2
All ROMs was tested 3 times each, the best of 3 runs are shown, ALSO
One major thing to note, after loading DCD 4.1.2 and TR 1.3.2 available
RAM memory increased by 350-380 KB (0.35 Mb) because of this DCD 4.1.2
shows even more available than norm ..
Summary;
DCD 4.1.2 had an avg. of 1 Mb Free RAM available over all other ROM,
Keep in mind DCD ROMs has less running processes .. still very impressive
Seeing over 27MB of RAM before I loaded the screen capture software ..
Available RAM = DCD 4.1.2
Best write performance = WM6.5
Best overall write performance = WM6.5
Best read performance = DCD 4.1.2
Best overall read performance = WM6.5
Best read/write (copy) performance = DCD 4.1.2
Best overall read/write (copy) performance = WM6.5
Best CPU performance = WM6.5
Best Overall CPU performance = DCD 4.1.2
Best Graphic performance, DCD 4.1.2, R4R and TR 1.3.2 shown
100% the same performance, WM6.5 and DCD 3.2.6 being slower..
Overall Winner IMO WM6.5 reason being, the additional process running
takes up both memory and CPU, plus the fact its M2D ready!!
Also Note .. R4R and TR 1.3.2 are both base on the DCD 3.2.6 ROM,
DCD 4.1.2 is more on par with WM6.5 ROM.
Final note R4 Reloaded fail the (Arkabal frames per sec. test) feeling is something to
do with direct-draw not working correctly .. so for R4R I had to skip that test..
See attach for my raw test files produce by the SPB testing tool .. anyone good with MS Excel
can make a nice 3D chart of my results .. go for it..
Yea I wanted to get WM 6.5 in the mix but it looks like a CL Kitchen was the only thing available and I haven't had time to sit down and learn how to use it and mess with it.

Sorry that I didn't respond to you sooner. Yea the original email link from spb didn't work for me either. I ended up googling it.
The other thing you will find is that the program has the ability to analyze your benchmarks and compare them to other devices, however none of that actually works anymore. It's all web-based and it appears that they took it down. That's why I did it all manually.
I'm looking forward to your results. I will post my actual numbers soon as opposed to just graphs so we can compare.
Thanks so much for your work. It is very much appreciated.
its all good ..

Thank you flipzmode and Mr-free! Way above and beyond.
The new DCD ROM kicks butt, eh? It's odd that 6.5 is worse at graphics right now. Thank you very much for this.
It's obvious that I have a long way to go with my beta ROM, and I'm glad to see that my 1.3.2 is actually outperforming it's predecessors.
Based on the screenshots, it's odd that my 1.3.2's title bar seemed to be different shades of gray between screens, and also it's odd that the icon for the keyboard isn't the one for the new diamond keyboard, did you not install that package? It's a memory hog.

[App][12/9/09] Skyfire Browser 1.5 [Full VGA Support] Very Nice

Download Here http://get.skyfire.com/ All Resolutions
Skyfire has always been a browser with outstanding functionality, but when it came to appearance it always lagged browsers like Opera Mobile.
No more however, as version 1.5 brings a more attractive, finger-friendly browser that makes better use of our VGA and WVGA screens.
The latest version features:
* Full VGA Support. Skyfire now provides native support for the VGA and wVGA resolutions as seen on many recent Windows Mobile phones.
* Smooth Scrolling. Kinetic scrolling has been added to Skyfire. Flick and you will see that scrolling has become very smooth.
* Finger friendly UI. There are many UI updates to enable finger friendliness, increase the ease of use and add a bit of fun to the Skyfire experience. We updated as well the start page to be simpler-to-use with high-resolution devices
* Full screen mode. For touch screens we have a mode that will completely remove all UI elements from the screen to provide maximum visibility onto the page. Tap the bottom right corner to bring back the toolbar.
* Auto-Move text entry. This keeps any text entry box visible when the virtual keyboard is used. This convenient feature assures that web site forms are easy to use, in case the SIP (i.e., virtual keyboard) covers it.
* Latest versions of Flash 10 and Silverlight. 1.5 has been updated to the newest and most stable versions of both rich-media formats.
* Performance enhancements. Both Skyfire’s client and servers have been upgraded for faster, more responsive browsing.

Yeah its aight. For sure better then last version of skyfire but its still skyfire imo. Doesnt beat opera mobile 9.7 though, thats the shizzle right there! You can tell this is a wannabe right off the bat but doesnt even compare. Took me twice as long to get to this page on this version of skyfire compared to opera mobile 9.7. For skyfire lovers, theyll love this. For people who love opera mobile, theyll piss on this. For people who want a clean, sleek, fast windows based web browser, theyll easily choose opera mobile 9.7 over this, easily. Thanks for the info though, i still like to have 2 web browsers on my phone just as a backup and this is a good backup but not a replacement.
opera is too sluggish on my phone,so i'm using opera mini.but i'll still use skyfire for some flash game on facebook
Does anyone knows how to get megavideo working? When I tap on the red button, its redirects me to the advertising popup. After pressing the back button, the red button is still there and won't turn green.
I can't seem to scroll down to the bottom portion of A_C page to download S2U2 using Sky Fire. Wonder why. After install, the keyboard doesn't show too, until a soft reset.
Skyfire is on par with Opera now imho.
I always found the quality and speed lacking when compared to Opera, but I am quite impressed with this version.

Edit: I was able to watch vids on hulu with previous versions.
Even though Opera 9 / 10 are great, Skyfire is still very useful when it comes to flash / silverlight and browsing large websites on a slow connection. This new version works great on HD2, I just wished they would disable the big fonts as it is already readable without zooming on the large screen.
is there a way to make videos full screen?
Skyfire does not support Chinese text input......

The problem is that Hulu does not want Skyfire distributing content for them to mobile devices. Skyfire's mobile browser uses Skyfire servers to get content to your phone. Hulu has a problem with this and has blocked those servers from streaming video.
i have installed this and opera10 beta 2.
both are totally rocking.
fast, clear,
i love the fact skyfire is in vga now.
like somone else posted it is good to have both browsers.
both seem fast. not tried any flash stuff on opera.
but its good to be able to watch xhamster on skyfire and clearly. lol
I must be doing something wrong with Skyfire. I've been using it since very early in the beta phase, but it has always been very sluggish for me. Everyone talks about how fast it is, but I find it takes forever to render pages on my Fuze. Whenever I scroll down the page I get that little checkerboard pattern and it usually takes 5-15 seconds for the page to display. I find Opera much faster for all my web browsing.
And while the newest version is more touch friendly than past versions, Opera is much better on that front as well.
Skyfire won't replace Opera as my default browser... unless someone shows me how I can make it as fast as everyone says it is.
Wow! So many improvements! It's faster, handles flash more easily, new UI and above all: Flick scrolling... finally .
Would like to tryout, but download doesn't work on their site

The checker board scrolling/loading of pages is really starting to annoy.
On the bright side they are way ahead of other phone browsers when it comes to playing flash/media on a webpage so 2 thumbs up to that.
But Opera will stay my as a my main browser until this is fixed.
From reading the messages here I thought this would be a good browser to try since it supports flash, javascript etc.
Except you cannot enter text in a flash text field, that function is not supported they say, maybe in future versions...
How moronic is that?
Uninstalled.
I've been using Skyfire since the early stages, the improvements of the new layout of this new 1.5 are very cool. But referred to the previous version i was using up until yesterday, it's way slower about displayin the page while i scroll it down. I've read some opinions of the web that say it could not be a problem of the new software itself, but it might be because of the very large amount of people that are tryin it out at the moment that slowed the Skyfire servers down. What's your opinion on it?

The problem with those new Devices is that they lack of hardkeys. The HD2, Touch HD, HD Mini and Touch Pro 2 lack of a camera button. Why use the touchscreen when you may use any Hardware button to take a photo and zoom in/out .
Devices that are proven to be working:
-HTC HD2 aka. HTC Leo
-HTC Touch HD aka. HTC Blackstone
-HTC Touch Pro 2
-HTC HD Mini
-HTC Touch Diamond 2
Just install, close any open HTC Camera windows and run it over one of my icons. If you are able to change to volume, update your HTC Camera.

Thanks for this one Scilor. Very happy to see that someone finally faces this problem after all the time. Some slight suggestions:
It would be great if your programm could ran as a (less-resource-and-battery-eating) service in the background, which only becomes active, when the camera is started. This way the camera would start faster (takes a while now because of the splashscreen) and you wouldnt need the extra shortcuts...
Big Probs again
It only runs when the camera is active (When you use my shortcuts). Using a Service will use more battery power.
The Splashscreen can be disabled in a future version What against my icons
Absolutely fantastic! Works superbly!
If only i hadn't broken my camera glass today
Thanks again scilor!
P.S. is the "killme" file always necessary? it's a pain to download directly to the device when on EDGE (just nitpicking here )

Nothing against your icons Happy that you designed some at all I just like a clean/tydied up startmenu with less shortcuts as possible.
The PhotoCam is the only one i really need anyway and now has its place in my Sense-Quicklinks (everybody can delete/move the other shortcuts he doesnt need, so no problem with this one).
Thanks again, the Prog is working absolutely great. Ideal for self-portraits (which has always been a mess until now).

Killme is just for those One-Click-Hosters, you can delete it. If you are on mobile you may download from my website (Please only download if needed, it costs traffic).
Your nice device Do not drop it!

nice idea! =)
is it possible to use volume keys for zoom and any other key for shot ?
I will take a look, but I do not think so. The HTC Camera maps the Volume keys to one key, very crazy but true
Awesome, works great. Now I wonder why HTC did not give this atleast as an option.
Thanks
Looks interesting, will try when i finish work....Thanks
Awesome Scilor, it seriously pissed me off that HTC could of missed such an obvious feature. Thanks for fixing HTC's mistake.
Scilor, did you see my request??
This is truely awsome! I've beeen waiting for this!
It made my day!
Thanks!
Edit: Hmmm, cant seem to get it to work... Installed it to device. When I run the app it automatically stats the camcorder. I switch to camera and when I press the volume keys the volume adjustment window comes up. It doesnt help if I hold the volume keys.
What am I doing wrong?

not working on mine as well, hd2 - stock rom 1.48, installed, restared.. not working.manila 2.5.1921
EDIT:
uuuups, sorryyy, i thought i just run a normal camera icon.. working great..
First of all, you must close the camera app if it is running.
Then run it over one my icon(Not the normal one!). Then press the VolUp/VolDown keys. If you are able to change the volume, my program is currently incompatible with your version of the HTC Camera Application.

My honest opinion about the phone?
I truely like this phone (used as dailydriver 2 weeks now) because it has a pretty nice design, it's not too heavy (which is also important) and the overall quality is good. It does all things fine, and I haven't really experienced any issues or flaws besides that the compass is not so accurate. The camera is in my eyes above average (pretty good) - pictures are sharp and clear, the batterylife very good and besides that it is a very basic phone.
A free Tempered Glass Screen Protector is also included with the phone, and it comes with a normal preinstalled screenprotector out of the box.

Hi s7yler, Indeed your photos are much better that photos shooted from colonelzap in his review, I don't know how is possible.
Here there are the colonelzap's photos...
Do you have problems with notifications, widgets that disappear after reboot or app incompatibles with the system? These are the bugs that speed 7 buyers have...

I don't think they are MUCH better, maybe a little bit better. the aperture etc. are the same in the EXIF infos when I compare them.
I am using the latest OTA (20150820-222255) update on the phone and I do not have any problems with the notification LED, widgets or apps.
Widgets works fine and stay after a reboot. What apps should not work? And notification LED works as it should for missed calls and SMS.

I don't understand what you mean with 1)? what app does not work???
And the notification LED is only in red yes, but that should also be enough. They didn't promise RGB colours.
Whatsapp I don't personally use, so can't comment on that.
installed apps are in the data / app of internal memory and then you have to run them at startup. To run them automatically to be copied into the folder system / app ...
The problem with whatsapp that a lot of users have, is that usually the notifications aren't received. Some users can receive whatsapp's notification only opening the app and then exit from it with the central button, but not the triangle button. This problem is also common to other app like viber, aquamail etc.

I think it is more a problem with whatsapp itself, I heard that whatsapp gives problems on many different phones, not only on the ZOPO here. Seems to be common that whatsapp doesn't work correct on many smartphones.
What copeppe and franciros think is thet the 3th party widgets do not load after reboot. Only the widgets from firmware is loaded without problems.
By the way, excellent review.

On the lastest OTA Wireless Update from ZOPO these things also seems to be fixed. Here the changelog, it is similar on both the ZOPO Speed 7 and ZOPO Speed 7 Plus
Seems to cover all the bugs mentioned or?
Also I am using "Weather & Clock widget" on my ZOPO and the widget is always there, also after a reboot!
Yes, I see now. Finally upgrade!!!
Great review S7yler, please PM me a link/coupon for purchase if you got one tnx
How do I upgrade zp951 20150911-194355 when it is the root?
If you have root & the recovery image installed, then If someone releases a zip-file of 20150911-194355 update, it can be installed via recovery.
I guess it is that simple.
Otherwise, its a re-flash of a full ROM when the 20150911-194355 update is included in the next ROM download, then a re-root.
I downloaded the update. I did not install it. Launched the phone in recovery mode . Leeching the menu up to install zip from adupsfota folder and install update.zip. I aborted the installation.
What am I doing wrong? : płacz:
Check the zip file size; I have read that the original update was 122 MB, and the most recent update is 132 MB. The first one, 122 MB, must have been damaged or compiled wrong.
Look here: http://www.androidiani.com/forum/zopo/473439-thread-ufficiale-zopo-speed-7-plus-zp952-22.html
I expect my Speed 7 (non plus) to arrive tomorrow, so I am only guessing until I try out all this root & recovery stuff for myself.

[APP][MOD] Spotify Lite - scaled for standalone use on Wear OS

This is a mod of the Spotify Lite v0.6.6. The official Spotify app for Wear OS is not able to stream music standalone. Sideloading any Spotify works but the UI is obviously giant on Wear OS - see this recent Spotify screenshot from Wear OS.
It's possible to change system wide density but it takes away the usability and look of Wear OS. I did a quick experiment with pure resource mod and it works surprisingly nice so I'm sharing it with you. Downscaling other well written apps is therefore possible.
What it took:
Replace all sizes (dip/sp in layouts, dimens etc.) - I divided them by 2
Few quick fixes - set bottom tab layout alignment to center instead of fill, set custom height for actionBarSize, set horizontal margin for toolbar (so far only on Home screen)
It takes only quite a few commands to create such downscaled modded app. The current version of the size replacement script is really ugly and slow but I think that it would make a great universal script/tool for conversion of any user app (right?)...

Spotify Lite mod is attached to this post. (Lite version doesn't support offline playback but the whole app is supposed to be snappy.)
Full version of modded Spotify (8.4.62.490) is available from mega.nz or AndroidFileHost. Mod v2 (improved top toolbar): mega.nz or AndroidFileHost.
Here's the raw (but trivial) tool - WearModder.jar
How to use it:
Code:
# Decompile apk
java -jar apktool_2.3.3.jar d spotify-lite.apk
# Mod resources (use directory or individual files as arguments)
java -jar WearModder.jar spotify-lite/res
# Perform additional manual tweaks
# Build apk
java -jar apktool_2.3.3.jar b spotify-lite
# Sign
keytool -genkey -v -keystore my-release-key.keystore -alias alias_name -keyalg RSA -keysize 2048 -validity 10000
jarsigner -verbose -sigalg SHA1withRSA -digestalg SHA1 -keystore my-release-key.keystore spotify-lite/dist/spotify-lite.apk alias_name
WearModder modifies all files in-place so do not run it more than once on the same files (d'oh). Feel free to try modding your favorite apps and let me know how well it works.
Update 2018/10/04: Uploaded mod of Spotify Lite v0.9.5.
Chech also uploads of others who shared their (newer) versions.
This is probably the coolest thing I've seen here for a while! If this app would have existed when I had my Huawei Watch, I probably wouldn't have sold it!
GJ. This could be a game changer for Wear OS. Sad that such things doesn't come from Google directly.
I want to see more screenshots of such apps!
Great! It's possibile to download offline music using a premium account?
Thanks
Amazing job!
I am testing this like for an hour now and well it is buttery smooth on my old but amazing Huawei Watch.
I used Wearify (third party app) for spotify music on my watch without the phone but this app was limited to playlists only.
With this solution i can search for music on my watch and play them. and it works really well.
only think to note for people with spotify premium:
I have spotify premium but it shows only the option to shuffle play and i CANNOT save music for offline playback.
but still i wasn't expecting offline playback. only think i expected was a horrible but at least working search button.
But while it is true that it works, it is such an amazing smooth experience so well done!

You can't with Spotify Lite yet
Could you do the same with the normal Spotify app? So that we get offline playback! Thanks!
I'm not a Spotify subscriber but I will try modding the full version of Spotify next (I'm really curious how well it will go). I have just learned that there is "Wearify for Spotify" (also online only) so something for actual offline playback is welcome I guess.
How can i install it? Thanks

I've been working on offline playback but that's sadly not that easy, current download implementation consists of ripping the audio stream and saving it as ogg file, works but slow since 1h of music takes 1h to download. And obviously I can't put that on the play store. If you're interested feel free to look at the source.
This is great. Especially useful for people with sim-enabled watches such as the LG Watch Sport.
@moneytoo there's a request a few threads down of trying to use the Polar Flow wear apk (not the full phone one) on Wear OS watches that aren't the M600. Because the apk is only designed for the M600 which has a 240x240 display, all the elements are off place on watches with other res displays. Would you be able to take a quick looksy and see if you could work your magic on resizing the apk for other watches? In this case the resolution actually needs to be scaled up.
Would love to be able to use the Flow apk on my LG Watch Sport which has a 480x480 screen.
I can help provide the most up to date apk if needed.
If anyone has connectivity issues with this mod, this is because of a missing wear connectivity API implementation in this phone app.
You can compile and install the following google sample app: https://github.com/googlesamples/android-WearHighBandwidthNetworking
This app gives you a toggle to enable/disable high bandwidth.
I have just added link to modded version of the full Spotify to the first post. The bottom bar still doesn't look right but it should be manageable. Let me know if offline playback works.

Wow, that's a huge step forward! I already tested the full mod, and it's incredibly slow on my brand new ticwatch pro, though. Took awhile to load the login screen, then much patience to login (bg animation = lag), but the home screen isn't so bad. Unfortunately that's where the usability stops, because I can only scroll up/down to see the latest playlists/albums, and trying to queue one for offline download is broken because the app thinks I was on cellular, despite wifi being enabled. I couldn't access the settings interface to override this. I don't have a small smartphone, and without gesture functionality or an interface redesign, I can't imagine a usable interface from the main app that shows everything one might hope to operate..
hey guys,
i tested the full version on my ne ticwatch pro, because of some connetction issues with the spotify wear app.
the full version (by moneytoo) worked fine, exept some usability problems because of the resultion with 400x400px
if searched for one of my public playlists and it was possbile to download the songs. disconected my watch from the wlan and the songs could stil be played.
could it be possible to adjust the dpi settings in the app for 400x400px?
not only the bottom bar, althoug the settings button and the searchbar are out of the screen.
I've just uploaded another mod of the full Spotify that should work better with the top menu/toolbar across devices (hopefully).
