I was wondering how many of you might be put off by the fact that the Flyer is shipping with Gingerbread and not Honeycomb - even though it will get Honeycomb later.
Appreciate the feedback.
I love the idea of the scribe technology, but considering how small it is and battery life....plus it is not shipping with Honeycomb and the price is going to be higher than comparable devices....
It's sad as I have owned only HTC phones. I love their quality.
The scribe technology I LOVE! I can see so many added benefits of this - especially in syncing with Evernote. I also see a benefit with those having children.

There were some internal docs from either bestbuy or costco that were reporting a 10.1" screen edition as well later in the summer.
I'd pay top dollar for Scribe + 10.1". There is a serious dearth of handwriting systems for android. Now if we could just get an OCR input system (e.g. Graffiti for the old Palm PDAs). I've seen a demo of scribe, and it doesn't look like it does input analog>digital, maybe I'm missing something. Still better than nothing.
There was also one more interesting quip about Android 3.0 in Eldar’s article. According to him, if a hardware partner releases the tablet on Android 2.x version of OS, as per licensing agreement for Android 3.0, they are not allowed to update Android 2.x tablets to 3.0 version.

I'd say that is probably just a rumour. I've not heard it from any other source. The article at unwiredreview is the only article that author has written and his dubious source of information is a Russian website that he links to

I agreee - I'd rather wait for a stable version.
The Xoom is a worst case scenario. Made by Motorola, released prematurely.
The main benefit I see from Honeycomb is apps which are designed to run on larger screens, instead or "over-inflated" phone apps

I can't wait for this tablet to come to market. Ofcourse there will be things I do not like, one is the fact it is not a phone. It is a tablet, and I want a tablet also to be a phone. Since it has 3g enabled I think a phone application is not hard to install. Any ideas on this?
Was all for the flyer as I'm a massive HTC fan ,but just ordered the ASUS transformer as it suits my want for a tablet and the need for a net book for the kids and it has honeycomb already and has good reviews

Won't be buying due to the fact that I already have a galaxy tab (Big Mistake!!) Although the design and ui of the flyer look good, along with the fact that htc are good with updates, and a lot of people I have talked too like the pen. Not sure about the onlive myself due to the fact that you have to use a onlive controller (what are you meant to do with the tablet if the controller is in both hands?)

The idea is that you stream the game to your tv, so the flyer just replaces the normal onlive box that is sold, playing games on the flyer screen is also possible, but i agree that it sounds somewhat difficult :/ maybe they are going to sell some sort of case/stand like the Xoom and iPad have
but yes all the rumors suggest (from staples leaked sheets that a 10 and 8.9 inch honeycomb tablet from htc are coming this june, maybe thats when flyer will get update
id like to see what they do to sense considering there is that base bar on the honeycomb though

I'm disappointed in HTC's first tablet. Just the screen size is what disappoints me. Wondering why they dont add the 3D into it like the G-Slate has, after all they are coming out with a new EVO3d that i will be picking up once released!. Companies are struggling to separate themselves from everyone else when these android tablets are going to start looking identical, but HTC has their SenseUI and now Scribe which in my book gives them the edge! I'm just excited to see what happens with 3rd party firmware tweaking for performance to eliminate the possibility of skipping. MikFroyo and Fresh both have wonderful Firmwares that made my Evo many times better in terms of performance while clearing out the clutter
The LG tablet does not have a 3some screen, only 3d camera, a 3some screen of that size would add a lot of extra cost, it just wouldn't be worth it, but yes a bigger screen would have been a better choice by htc, but then again if you look at the first Android phones they made and compare them to what they have now....great things I predict to come

Game over for me. I just cancelled my preorder since the release date is going to slip again. Im travelling early June and want to make sure I have something to travel with so I ordered the Galaxy Tab 10.1v which I can pick up in a week or so.
Im gutted really! I really wanted a 7" tablet and REALLY wanted a HTC. I will check back here and see what you guys think of it after release *sniff*

Same here, paid in full for the 32gb 3g tablet on day one to use it for my work (illustration/concept design) because of the n-trig digitizer and form factor... Now 4 months later, i only use it for some dumb web browsing, mail checkin and occasionnal movie watchin, stuff that i could perfectly perform on my phone... The scribe sdk (recently released) seems to be 3.x specific from what i understand... AND NOW I'M MAD AS HELL, FED UP OF WAITING. Feel cheated and insulted by the total lack of communication. Should have wait and go for the upcoming Lenovo Thinkpad tablet with nvidia cpu, full size host usb, fullsize sdcard reader and honeycomb out of the box...
I just wish htc would communicate
If somebody know who to hit (that would matter), i'm down for some good old fashion mass emailing, or any action that would get em to give us a goddamn answer

With all respect, how did you plan to use your Flyer? For which kind of work? Why do you think the current software is incapable? It would be good if you can share with us.
If you think that you can not use efficiently the current Flyer for your work I am afraid that you will still be disappointed when the Honeycomb comes. IMHO, the Honeycomb will not bring significant changes in the Flyer's productivity.
BTW, Lenovo Thinkpad is 10" tablet which is in a complete different category. And Chinese Lenovo quality in general is worse than HTC's (I own an Lenovo T serie laptop, It's bad). I think HTC Puccini will be better than the Lenovo Tablet.

It's not that HC will solve all of our issues or bring in Earth shattering functionality. That's not the point nor my immediate concern.
It's the complete lack of communication and the complete lack of backing.
HTC marketed scribe, where are the new apps supporting it? Where is the communication letting users know that supporting apps are coming?
HTC promised honeycomb "shortly after launch", where is it? Where's the communication?
Heck, where are the accessories?
If HTC is going to position themselves as a company that innovates on top of Android, then they have to do better than this...
My recommendation to you guys is to annoy the heck out of them on twitter and on their facebook page... I try to post to them every now and then just to be a pain in the ass

Sorta have to agree here. After playing with Honeycomb tablets in the stores, I'm wondering what all the fuss is about. Gingerbread + Sense makes the Flyer a wonderful tablet, IMHO.
Yeah, I'd like to see more pen aware apps. But I suspect it's only a matter of time before they start showing up (especially once other manufacturers adopt N-trig pen technology). And even if they don't, the ability to jot down notes is still worth the price of admission, IMHO.

I agree here also. All the current HC tablets are laggy. HC has a few cool features, and looks nice. But the eye candy comes at the expense of performance. And none of the HC features missing from Gingerbread are real deal breakers. HTC is probably trying to figure out how to incorporate Sense without making HC even more laggy. Compared to current HC tablets, the Flyer GB experience is smoother and faster in most respects.

u may be right, maybe i'm trippin, but i know for sure that Autodesk Sketchbook pro for honeycomb is supposed to support the scribe/n-trig digitizers, so for now unfortunately it feels like this HC update is my best chance to be able to use the flyer as a digital sketchbook. I also keep an anxious eye on that Fresco thread in the meantime, and i sure hope the somebody can make this happen Gingerbread flavor... nobody likes a laggy tablet
for info, i plan to use it to do my preliminary sketches and color studies on the go. The note app combined with evernote may be great for note taking and sketching basic ideas, but misses alot of basic features to call it a painting app (canvas size, simple color mixing/picking, etc...)
i agree about the lenovo feeling pretty cheap compared to htc, but i really like the features, and it should run Sketchbook pro (for instance) with pen pressure out of the box... but i sure like the flyer form factor... i'm just reallyreallyreally frustrated right now...

Well, one thing is sure... Anyone of us that have performed the s-off method will not be able to upgrade anyhow! Unless guys here find a way to conform the HTC OTA protocol or HTC add geek allowance into their updates with a warning!
To be honest, I'm with others on here, I've tried HC, and unless HTC have given an even better Sense cover to it, it does not give me any thoughts of upgrade... They still have not fixed PPTP VPN for goodness sake....!

Honeycomb is a new version of Android (3.0) specifically made for tablets. As of now it is laggy, and not fit to run on the Flyer. ICS, is the version after Honeycomb which is to release this fall, and is one OS that runs on both tabs and phones.

again vague....companies like Motorola and HTC are screwing customers with false claims of soon to be released features and updates. This, "sell now and make promises philosophy", is pissing a lot of people off. People take the chance of purchasing the product in good faith expecting they will see what was promised soon. HTC can make great products but I for one will never purchase a product that promises features or capabilities in the near future. I will simply wait for something better or go with a reputable company that actually keeps it word.

Anyway, I'm in the market for a new tablet (strongly prefer a 7 incher, the portability of it is a huge selling point for me). I've had for a few months a COBY 7 inch tablet, and while the form factor is really great, I want something newer, shinier, and better And so I'm stuck choosing between the HTC Flyer and the Acer Iconia A100 (The Viewpad 7x looks nice, but too expensive and the Thrive 7" comes too late for me, I want to order on Black Friday), so if you guys could fill in with your thoughts on the following subjects (would like to hear from owners of both camps), it'd be great to help me decide!
Display quality: Which one has the better picture quality/more responsive? Do I need a screen protector (i.e. no Gorilla Glass)?
Performance: Which performs better in your experience? I'm having the worst time choosing between a faster single core and a slightly slower dual core.
Battery Life: From what I read, the A100 is pretty mediocre here (under 5 hours). But I'd like to hear your thoughts anyway.
Mod-ability: I read that the Flyer has an HC ROM out, but is it rather difficult to install? I'm by no means an extremely advanced user on Android, but I know my way around tech, like to experiment, and with sufficiently detailed instructions I can get by fine.
Although the difference in price is about $20-30 atm, I would also need to get an MHL adapter for the flyer, so for all intents and purposes you can consider the prices to be the same. Which should I choose?

Can't speak to the Acer tablet, but I am a PROUD owner of the US Wifi HTC Flyer.
I've been a member of this site since 2007 lurked, learned, and have become pretty good with the Rooting/Development process. I do it for all of my friends and actually make money from it as well.
Now to your specifics.
I put screen protectors and cases on all of my devices. Just gives me peace of mind seeing as I like to show off the devices and let others test them out. The Flyer has been pretty durable.
The Flyer seems very snappy. I don't do those test that because I know they can be tweeked and skewed. I go off how the device feels when I have about a dozen different apps open, multiple apps running simultaneously.
Not that Juice plotter is terribly accurate, but it shows about 45hrs of battery life. I manage a few weather based businesses. Today it rained and I watched about 3hrs of YouTube videos, a full length movie and the rest was spent browsing the Internet, Facebook'ing, Skyping friends, and using Google Music. When I got home to charge my Flyer I was still at 45% battery life. I'd like to consider myself a power user.
The process of rooting the Flyer was time consuming and about a 5/10 as far as difficulty goes. Had to update some things in the Android SDK to get it to work, got stuck in a bootloop, and confused by a few steps.
However, I got it to work FINALLY. HC is great on the Flyer.

I have both A100 and Flyer. The Flyer hands down is the best hardware. Best display , period, faster processor, better build quality, better battery, great internal mic, the stylus is neat if you take notes alot. But.............
The A100 has a solid working HoneyComb out of the box. But Acer has some quality issues and some people including myself have had to return units for replacement for poor wifi range and connectivity. The internal mic on the A100 is garbage to the point of unusable. Bluetooth is output only, no mic, so it;s really lousy for Skype unless you use a wired headset. The display is good / OK if you are looking directly on it and terrible off angle. The Flyer display blows it away.
For the Flyer you get a very usable Gingerbread but to me its ugly and clearly the widgets are for a phone and look ridiculous on a tablet. There is a beta Honeycomb for the Flyer, its not that difficult to install, but its difficult if not impossible to roll back to stock after install (that is being worked and may have a solution in a few days). The beta has significant bugs or short comings for example the camera doesn't work in a lot of apps like Skype.
If HTC would release a fully functional HC ROM, there's no question, take the Flyer any day, but we have no promised date or even assurance that they will ever release such an update, so in my opinion, both are flawed and it depends on your needs and expectations. With either device you have to prepare to live with some quirks or limitations, but in the 7" world, for now these seem to be the top two.
I also had, but sold a Asus Transformer and everything just worked on that device, but I found it just too big to be portable. I travel a lot and love the 7" format.
Processors: Dual core doesn't mean it actually translates to faster processing. Few if any applications are written to take advantage of it and Android doesn't let you have multiple windows open and visible so only one task is foreground for the most part. Therefore a faster single core processor beats the multii-core in almost every real-life situation. I don't see this changing any time soon and the multi-core processors are just a marketing divot right now because everyone thinks they need the next shiny new object. The Flyer has some custom GB ROMs that overclock the processor, while the A100 has no custom ROM at this time.
As far as screen protectors, to me on tablets i think they are totally useless, but I treat my electronics pretty well. I travel a lot and never have an issue. Unless you envision carrying your tablet in your pocket with sharp objects or in a tool bag unprotected, its a waste of money.
Short answer flyer much better I too tried the A100 but to no avail was having same issues with quality hardware so I returned it.

I tried the A100, the screen ruined it for me. Very limited viewing angles. I prefer the Flyer much more. Also, HC 3.2 is not really a plus to me. Gingerbread with Sense is a better user experience overall for me.
I'm a strong believer in the 7" format. Fits in one hand, which comes in handy seeing as we have a 6 month old that always wants to be picked up. I don't think there's anything in the market that competes with the HTC Flyer. I've had mine for 3 months now, & have had a ball. I'm running the standard Gingerbread ROM, because I've been waiting for ICS. That promises to have more functions for the stylus. Don't bother with a cover, unless you don't want to use a pouch or carrier. Its construction is very durable. The display is also good. Have watched a few movies & shows on it, including Transformers 3 & Top Gear. To the point where I don't even bother with my laptop, when I want to watch something. The headset sound is also very good. In closing, until the second gen Samsung Galaxys come out, the HTC is the choice in the 7" market.
Lurking and really considering the flyer. Especially after best buy dropped their pants. Definetly not new to android, new to tablets. Only thing kinda holding me back is what appears to be a general lack of development on the device. Guess I was spoiled with my captivate. Still the stock software appears real solid
you'll find the same lack of development on all current tablets. Google never released the source code for honeycomb so there is no way to develop custom ROMs. All you can do is take existing ROMs and add or subtract system apps and a few properties. That should change if and when Google releases source code for Ice Cream Sand. They have promised but are holding it back until the new Nexus hits the shelves sometime in Nov. If the source is released , I expect we will see a jump in development and hopefully a CM9 rom but that will take a few months. In the mean time we hope HTC blesses us with a fully functional HC rom.

We all have flyers and we love them. I have this question. If you root your flyer and then upgrade the os to ICS, jelly bean and beyond. What would it take for you to want to replace it? What would htc have to do in terms of hardware upgrades, besides the obvious one of putting a multi core processor,or maybe adding gorilla glass to make you pull the trigger on the next one? The prospect of a 7" ipad has me intrigued, but even with that I wonder what I would do with my flyer besides make it an alarm clock and then all the apps i would put it , i am back to wanting to carry it with me again. And that has me seriously considering getting another flyer in case I screw the first one up, trying to root it
The next round of tablets will have at least double the screen resolution of the current, so I would probably move to the larger 10" +, except, see my signature below to find out why I probably won't be interested in future tablets even with faster hardware and better screens.
7-8" screen, internal GPS, $200-300 price point and has support longer than launch day. That's all I look for.

it'd take a lot for me to go above a 7" tablet...i had a 10" and it was simply way too big
thinner and lighter would have me salivating for an upgrade, though i don't yet feel the need to update my tablet as often as my phone...so it may be the next iteration for me, not the ones directly coming up

Im still for the most part very happy with my flyer. esp with the advent of custom roms and oc/uv has made this thing just a treat to play around with. I'm also very happy with it's size.. not too huge. not too small... just right
that said. i've def drooled over the htc jetstream. what bothers me is i can't find it in wifi only anywhere and att is the only one selling them that i could find... but alas.. it's only a dual core...
i think i'll wait and go striaght from single core to quad core for my next tablet. i have been keeping my eye on ASUS recently the prime is cool but came out with a lot of bugs. i was also watching the MEMO 370t quad core 7 inch tab thats supposed to be priced around 250.. u get the same 8mp cam as on the prmie.. but no front facing cam.. and that might be a deal breaker for me as i spend a lot of time on skype with friends and family.
so ... my next flyer would idealy be a quad core dual camera wifi gps THE WERKS!

I think I'll just see what's available when my contract is up in 2013. I've dropped mine a few times so it has some scuffs.
Hardware I'd like a LED flash for the camera. I'm okay with the 5MP camera, but wouldn't mind a 8MP with full HD recording. That being said, HDMI out is a must. Higher screen resolution would be good too. I think the 1024x600 res can be upgraded. Also seeing how the new iPad has Bluetooth 4.0, that would be nice too. & a better standard pouch. The current one is pathetic.
But I'm not attached to my Flyer at the hip. I'd like another HTC, but if they don't have a new 7" tab soon, I'll have to shop somewhere else....

Nokia to release a 10" Windows 8 tablet with dual-core Snapdragon S4 in Q4

@n7 of 9... do you miss the extra screen real estate of the 10" tablet? I was seriously considering getting a jet stream... cause I wanted another toy... and for the extra screen real estate
For Android tablets, I prefer 7-8". Easier to carry around and easier to hold for reading. My 10" tablet is a Windows 7 tablet and I will probably gets Windows 8 tablet end of the year. Yes... more blasphemy.
Edit: right now it would take a lot for me to get rid of my View. I am on stock HC and love the pen interface. I will probably always get the latest and greatest Archos tablet, but right now the View is the one I always carry with me. I also have the data plan for it which is very convenient.
Bluetooth 4.0 would be great.
A better way to output HDMI (The MHL stuff is just added bulk and works intermittently for me).
7 or 8 inch
better resolution
better gpu
continued scribe support/more apps that take advantage of it
less bezel, more screen real estate
built in kickstand?

The prospect of a 7" ipad has me intrigued, but even with that I wonder what I would do with my flyer besides make it an alarm clock and then all the apps i would put it , i am back to wanting to carry it with me again. And that has me seriously considering getting another flyer in case I screw the first one up, trying to root it

They would have to break into my house and fill my current flyer with holes. My girlfriend is looking for a flyer now even. The flyer runs amazingly regardless of the specs so I have no reason to want anything new. No tablets I've played with yet, impressed me the way the flyer did.

Being totally realistic here.. if the flyer or the tf101 don't suit your tablet needs nothing in the tablet world does.

So far, nothing. The only reason, right now, that I would want to replace my Flyer is because something I did to the Flyer (eg: break it somehow...) I don't want anything larger than 7", I love the pen, and I have no complaints about battery life, screen or OS stability. My previous 7" tablet (cheap Chinese variety) really was a test (to see if 7" would work) and from day one after buying it, I have been on the lookout for a better quality 7" (which took almost 1 1/2 years to come!). Since I've gotten my Flyer, I've not even looked at different tablets...

I like my samsung captivate.. incredibly flexible when it comes to romming.
I want htc hardware in a phone, the problem is that if I'm going to use a protective case anyway, it defeats the purpose of that high quality metal feeling phone..
I have 3 Tablets:
HTC EVO VIEW 4G (WiFi Only)
WiFi Xoom (GED with ICS)
BlackBerry Playbook (With OS 2.0)
They're all really nice tablets. If you are looking for another nice 7" Tablet then the Playbook is Great for the price ($199). Awesome screen, 1080p Video Recording, HDMI Out, Bluetooth and the OS (QNX) is head & shoulders above IOS & Android. Playbook is really smooth and the Browser is the best Tablet Browser out there (there is only 1 Browser out there that tops it in tests and that is Chrome for Desktops). Apps are coming along.
The sub -$199 Google Nexus tablet.

Absolutely depends on your application. I have experience with both - I own a Jetstream and a very close friend of mine owns a Flyer. What is your application. I shall suggest accordingly in view of that.
I'm debating the very same thing. I had a tablet pc (HP tmz2) and used it for taking notes like crazy.
At work I go through a couple of those little 5x8" pads of paper a month. I would like to replace those. I also take a lot of other notes, business books, church, etc. I thought the Flyer might be good since its about the 5x8 pad size ( a little smaller) but maybe its too small.
I will use this mostly for notes. I have a 9.8" Android tablet (Window N90... chinese but works great) and an epic 4g so I really don't need another plain android tablet. I really just need something to write with. I don't really want to spend 500 bucks on a Galaxy note 10.1... if I was going to go that far, I could get some sort of slate pc with full windows (probably for $600-700). I can get the Jetstream for 250ish probably, the lenovo thinkpad tablet for 250ish or the flyer for 150ish...
Based on your usage with the 2 sizes and the fact that I really just want to take notes (not really super in depth college-classroom style notes... just rarely do I want to take these kind of notes), what is your suggestion?

Ok as you are looking at something to take notes mainly, then I would definitely suggest either of these HTC devices or Samsung's note devices. Difference between them-Samsung is more acceptable and more post-purchase support. I have used the Note and I definitely like the HTC Flyer or Jetstream better. Note 10.1 I have no experience so can't say much about it.
Between the Flyer and Jetstream, the basic difference is in the size. For a fully functional pen experience on the Flyer, definitely need to upgrade to Honeycomb. The gingerbread pen experience is honestly bad. The experience with the pen on Flyer honeycomb and Jetstream is the same. So no complaints there. Only question that then comes to mind is what about future? If you amongst those who need to have updates on and off and it itches to have something new, then Flyer for the simple fact that the community is larger and there are already updates available. So you will be getting.your hands on some newer flavors of android for sure. The Jetstream userbase is smaller and.not much development happening so for.now, it is more or less what you buy is what you will be sticking with. But, if you want a device which is going to have better hardware specs, the Jetstream wins hands down.
Seeing as you have a 9.8 tab and are happy with it, would be more sensible to go for the Flyer as you already have a larger tab for the other functions. If however you are looking at something to replace your old tab and give you your notes function, then I would suggest the Jetstream.
I am definitely very happy with my Jetstream and I know my friend with the flyer is also.very happy with his flyer. So I can assure you this that no.matter what others say, once you buy either of the tablets, I know they will work well and will serve your purpose equally well. If portability is an.issue, then flyer better (as in the case of my friend) but if it isn't, I would go for the Jetstream.

I have two tablets--a JetStream and a Samsung Slate Series 7 (SSS7 - a tablet PC). I use my SSS7 for taking notes at conferences, church, etc.
I have tried a few different note taking ap's on the JetStream that will capture hand written notes using the HTC stylus (i.e., storing the hand written text) -- I have yet to find anything that compares to using OneNote on the SSS7. OneNote is superior to any of the note taking applications on the android, at least the ones that I have tried, which recognize the HTC stylus.
To be fair, I need to give the native note taking ap on the JetStream another chance to see how it does (i.e., I tried it early on but not recently), but when I have used recommended programs such as Quill and PhatPad, they do not compare very well to the SSS7 & OneNote. Quill is not as smooth and PhatPad was just lagey.
I am not sure if the slowness is due to pen technology on the HTC being inferior to that of the SSS7 (Wacom) or if the issue is with Android 3.x OS -- I have heard that Icecream (4.x) would be faster. The tips on the Wacom stylus that can be switched out, to provide either the feel of a pencil or a pen.
Additionally, the built in hand recognition s/w on W7 and W8 is many times better than what I have been able to find on the Android (e.g., WritePad) -- W7 / W8, it can learn on it's own based on your corrections, or you can enter 50 sentences and it learns your hand writing -- I can nearly scribble something on the SSS7, and it gets it correct most of the time. The experience on the JetStream is usually frustrating.
