Just a quick question about rooting the phone and having data issues. Is it true that some vibrants run into data issues after being rooted? I am on my second vibrant and it never fails to let me down when I need data. Does anyone else experience this? Data drops on several different roms, kernels, and modems; also drops on rooted stock roms. Im about to just trade this P.O.S. in for something else. Ive never had this problem on my G1 or my Mt3g.
Thanks for listening.
Jay
Just rooting? NO.. no data issues at all.
Did you flash CM7?
Does the IMEI match that on the back of your phone?
Have you gone back to stock JFD and then tried again (meaning not rooted)?
The only time I've heard people with issues is when not backing up their EFS when going to CM7 and back.
Thanks for you reply, I have gone back to stock (going to do again when I get home) but it seems that every rom I try I have data drop issues after a few days of use, even on the stock rooted roms. I had the same problem on my other phone which is why I turned it in. Just cant believe that both phones had exact same issue.
Update:
I have verified that there is some bug w/ rooted phones and data. I have unrooted phone and I have not lost data once in the last 3 weeks. Before being rooted even with a stock rom I would get 3-5 days max of data running before having to re-install rom or do factory data reset. Does anyone else share the same issue, or if anyone knows a work around for data on rooted phones that would prevent the data drop.
thanks,

Bell Atrix running OTA GB. The phone is unlocked and rooted now as I have been trying to fix this for a while now.
When the GPS is activated (the circle crosshair icon appears) my data connection drops and reconnects. This can take from 10-45 seconds and is highly annoying. It has only been happening since the update.
I have:
Flashed Gobstopper for Froyo - seems to work fine with no loss of data connection
Flashed Gobstopper for GB - GPS/Data issue is back
Flashed Faux123's kernal - GPS/Data issue is there
Flashed CM7 Beta - Same GPS/Data issue
Each flash is through recovery with a complete wipe (wipe Dalvik, cache, data. Erase boot, system, userdata, cache, webtop, preinstall.)
I am out of ideas. Any suggestions?
Well I guess my issue is unique. Lucky me.
After flashing Froyo and letting the OTA update happen everything was doing well...
until I used THIS method to root my phone. As soon as I did this and installed Titanium Backup the GPS causes data connection drop.
At least I seem to have found the reason, now to find a fix.
(I am continuing to document this in case someone else has this same issue in the future.)
EDIT: After flashing 2.2.2 and letting it OTA update to 2.3.4 once more I found that it did the same thing again. GPS turns on, data connection drops then reconnects. This is without redoing IHOP. Without rooting. So the rooting method is off the hook. I am now leaning towards a hardware issue. I guess it is time to check out eBay for a spare Atrix and send this off to Bell to see if they will fix/replace it with an unlocked bootloader.

Update: Bought a new phone. Bell Atrix. Came with 2.2. Put my sim in it. Logged in to Motoblur. Updated OTA to 2.3. Added my google account.
Still does it. I can't believe there are no others experiencing this. That is two phones. Same thing.
Only other thing I can think to do is get tasker and keep gps off until needed.
I still love my Atrix!
You are not alone!
I started experiencing this at some point after the Gingerbread 2.3.4 update as well.
It's disappointing to hear that it also happens with CM7.
Did you ever post about this in the Motorola Support Forums?
I haven't posted in the Motorola support forums. I searched there and found most of the responses lacking in service.
I am running CM7 stable and it seems to work better now. Better all around. Haven't gone back to Bell's GB for a couple of weeks.
Before I made the leap to CM7 I did find that if I left the GPS off and turned it on just before using it there was less of an issue.
Yeah Motorola has absolutely terrible support, but I only was wondering if you posted there since it might help them take notice.
I'd really love to put CM7 on mine too, but I can't get any answers to some of the questions I have first, and lots of the info I find online is contradictory.
I found though that if I turn off the "use wireless networks" option in the location settings that it seems to help a lot.
But then there are apps that nag at me about that setting being off.
Been running CM7 nightly 4. No issues at all. Best firmware for this phone. Hands down.
Follow the instructions and everything will work great.
Hey There.
Bell atrix freshly international boot unlocked, CWM with Neutrino 2.7, first time google mapping startup after bootup, Data connection drops right after GPS icon lights up. Data picks up again, and most times have to restart app, google mapping then works.
Waste around a minute every time. Can happen a while after first boot as well.
Seem to remember a problem like this on my Vibrant, had to change supl settings through phone codes.
But I've got nothing here. Still digging.
FYI - I'm also a canadian Bell Atrix owner. A commonality?
Also determined:
If on wifi when gps app/gps turns on, I see Atrix drop wifi, and go to H+ data.
If only on data when gps app/gps turns on, I see Atrix drop H+ data, and go... nowhere. H+ Data comes back after a dozen or so seconds
Also, happens when using NottachTrix as well.
Threw in my Rogers sim as well, same problems with dropping data when GPS runs
I remember having this problem on my Desire Z. It was driving me crazy back then, but I finally found the culprit.
It turns out the problem was that there were 2 data APNs (not including MMS). Whenever the GPS is enabled, the phone would disconnect from data because of this. I deleted the redundant APN (leaving only one APN that I wanted to use) and everything worked fine since.
Working rom
I found a rom that works, Max Blur 5, it is based on the original bell rom 2.3.6, I tested several other Roms and only based on bell works. The last version Max blur 6 not working it's base on ATT rom..
I am on the Bell network in Montréal Québec.

Hey all! So...after struggling with this problem for a couple weeks, I've finally decided to get some help. I have an HTC Thunderbolt, currently running MIUI-Vicious-ICS-4.0, with 2.6.35.14-imoseyon-5.1.0AOSP+ Kernel. Also, the baseband is 1.48.00.0906w_1,0.01.78.0906w_2.
The problem is that I don't get 3G at all, and often I loose data completely. Very rarely do I have even 3 bars of 1x. WiFi still functions though. I've had this problem on many ROMs (CM7, MIUI, DasBAMF) so I know it isn't the ROM. I'm paying for data every month so it sucks not being able to use it
If you need any more details, feel free to ask. ANY help on this would be VERY appreciated!
Thanks!
Take the phone back to stock, radios and all. If still no data, phone is screwed. But right now, no ics Roms for the tb have data working

So after I go stock everything and it works, can I root again? Because the very first time I had rooted my phone, I flashed CM7 and everything was working fine before I decided to switch ROMs like a mad-man.
I have a nandroid backup that I made right after rooting my phone, it has stock everything. Do you think I should try that to see if it works before messing with anything else?
Yes, you could try your backup.

I keep having the data to drop off completely most of the time the only way to regain it is to reboot. It seems to be worse when I'm in a 3g area, more frequent. I am rooted I have tried several different Roms from Aosp to sense flashed a couple different radios but still have these annoying data drops. Has anyone else encountered this and is there some way to make this phone more stable?
Solved. well sort of.

On after reading a ton of post thru out the web and trying different things nothing helped. Still had constant data drops. So I tried the. Bamf_forever_1.10 rom. I have been on this rom now for 2 days so far zero data drops. I have not changed anything else just flashed this Rom. So I guess the question is what makes this rom so different that it holds the signal so much better?
Good to c you got it working, mine took a phone replacement. Maybe you found the right combo of ROM/radio.
Tapatalkn with my Thunderbolt
Yes maybe. But too bad I may be limited to a single Rom. At least this one is very impressive to say the least.
Make a nandroid, make note of the radios n keep flashing/experimenting. Maybe your phone likes sense 3.0?? Yeah, forever 1.10 is one of my go to's on my sd card, good ROM

Ive used CWM to install different roms over a couple months since I have gotten my GS2. Ive never had a problem with Bluetooth connecting and playing music at all. But I find that since I started running the latest ICS XXLPH roms its been an issue.
Or can switching many roms over a course of time damage the antenna? or hardware? Any suggestions?
I am going to revert back to my stock roms after I send this message. The only reason I am sending this before I try it is because nobody else really seems to be running in to this problem after searching the GS2 thread.
Ive tried a couple ICS roms and all cause my phone to randomly reboot when using BT paired with my stereo either on a call or streaming music.
When it reboots enough times it starts to corrupt the ROM/install. Because after a while it will start to just randomly freeze on its own forcing me to reset the phone.
Ive searched all over I havent pin pointed anyone having the exact problem as me so that is why I wonder if its possible to damage the BT device after multiple custom rom installs.
Thanks in advance.

You are using a leak or *beta* rom which is far from stable
And no installing many roms can not damage any hardware

Thanks for your response.
I am just concerned because like I said, from what I can tell, nobody else is running in to this problem.
Ive tried /format system along with full data/cache wipes. I wiped dalvik cache.
Im waiting for my phone to fully charge to put stock rom back on so I can test this completely.
But a bit nervous, because I need my phones BT as I am on the road often.

Having a similar, if not identical issue on latest Westcrip ROM. Near as I can tell, seems to be related to memory management: while on BT, RAM space drops almost 200Mb. While changing songs, or surfing the tracklist/phonebook, it can cause the RAM to reach a critical level. This causes the OS to crash and the phone to reboot (my case a soft reboot from the animation only) in order to create space. I would chalk this up to inefficient memory management by a beta ICS rom. Look for this to be sorted out in the future with official releases and custom kernels/roms.
Thanks for your response.
Yeah when I installed resurrection, I also ran in to that problem. I had no idea how to diagnose it. But it makes sense, bottling up the ram to the brink of reboot.
Thats what initially was happening to me, soft boot, took a few seconds and was back in. But extended crashes seemed to cause corruption.
Yeah so the XXLPH seems to have an issue. Because I also tried foxhound and got the same result.
I just got back in from testing my BT on my car stereo using my stock rom of KG2 and it played for 20 minutes and i chatted for 19 without any problems.
So I am glad it wasnt anything seriosu. But only reason I was concerned is I found nobody else to have the problem and I felt a bit isolated
But im reading the official ICS rom is out in Europe so im sure we will see some new roms out in the next little while.
Alright so I've never rooted my phone or done anything fancy with it as far as that goes. Recently the ICS update was released and I didn't update right away, wasn't sure how bad it would mess up my current settings etc. After reading that it retained all my settings and functionality I decided to upgrade. Ok so first off I can't Tether anymore and my portable wifi hotspot does not work either, I'm on Rogers and in Canada, never heard of 'tethering plans' such as other people refer to with AT&T. I have my 4g enabled, can retrieve internet access, and as soon as I turn on my portable hotspot my phone is unable to access the 4g anymore, It enables a wifi hotspot but anything that connects to it gets limited connectivity and can't access the internet either. It's like the phone just shuts it off automatically. I used to use this all the time and was one of my favorite features about my phone.. If I'm unable to use this I don't even want the data plan that I currently have, the data plan I decided on DUE to this feature.. So I'm gonna be pretty pissed off if this amazing little update is trying to force me to pay for something that I already pay extra to utilize properly.
I could be wrong here but I'm pretty damn sure that the battery life has dropped by close to 20% I can watch the percentage go down while I'm doing stuff and it seems to be losing life a lot quicker now, and I noticed that after the first day of using ICS. The resolution on the unlock screen seems to be botched, It's very squished... My old version never did this, and it's kind of annoying for my background images and having the clock looking out of whack.
I'm not sure what to do, there doesn't seem to be an update and as far as I know the update has been out for awhile now, why hasn't this stuff been fixed, who can I make official complaints to as far as Samsung or Rogers goes? I've checked these forums a bit and people seem to be having a lot of issues, some similar to mine some not, some I may have just had the luck to avoid so far. Is factory reset the only real option to fix things, and will that even help my tethering issues?
Also things like browsing through Facebook can eat up 5% of my battery in five or ten minutes... I know for sure that it never used to do that. I don't get why the battery life would be effected so drastically, but even when It's just sitting around while I sleep I lose a higher % of battery life than I did before... I've browsed through various threads but there doesn't seem to be many options, is anyone able to respond to the issues I'm having?
Flash a custom ROM. It's easy, and the experience is much better. There are guides in the stickies on everything you need to do.

Like he said above me, flashing a custom rom would fix your problems. I'd recommend CM9 ICS. It's pretty stable and my favorite so far. Downside is you lose S-Pen functionality.

I had the same problem and found two possible solutions:
1- I installed foxfi and i was able to use the wifi hotspot. I still wasn't able to access the native wifi hotspot functionality on the phone, but foxfi did the same thing so no big deal.
2- factory reset. this option is a little radical, but as has been explained elsewhere on this forum, the upgrade doesn't clear some configurations that remain from the GB ROM and those conflict with things like wifi hotspot and cardock and several other things.
I had to eventually do the factory reset. It was a nuisance because i had to reinstall everything, but now my phone works great and I can access all the native functionality.
You could also flash a custom ROM, but I have done it and while they are faster and sexier than the STOK ROM you always have to give up some functionality and they always have some bugs, and once you start flashing custom ROMs you can get OFD and we may lose you forever... (I had it from my windows mobile days and I would flash a new ROM sometimes more than once per day)..
Root (flash cwm with Odin), do a factory reset, and then flash the rooted/deodexed version of the UCLF6 stock rom. You won't lose ANY functionality, and your phone will be quick as hell again -- or even faster.
Like paleh0rse state...
Here is the thread with all the listing for stock LF6; tools that may be required. Along with all the ROMs.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740367
If you gonna flash a rooted/deodexed version of the UCLF6 stock ROM, no need to root before hand, just put CWM on and flash away.
Foxfi worked for me. But it doesn't connect right away to the Internet, had to inniate a browser then it connected.

XDA is no longer worth my time.
Factory reset fixed it for me.
TimOster; I did not use Klies, I am with Rogers so I assume it was one of their Roms, It was a wireless download but through my homes Wifi I believe. And I don't really think I did it manually, I got an update message on my phone one day didn't even realize it was ICS at first, but of course it gave me lots of warnings and obviously realized what it was before doing it, but I wasn't expecting this lol, I wish I had checked it out online first I would have seen all the complaints and just stuck with the old version.
I'm thinking about trying a factory reset first, and if that doesn't fix things, mainly the battery issues, then I'll try a stock rom.
No one seems to mention anything about the battery usage though, am I the only one noticing this effect? :\
XDA is no longer worth my time.
