Hello,
Im experiencing some lockscreen delay when i try to wake up the phone. I have rooted and flashed the original kernel back. When phone is connected to PC or charging its very responsive. Is there anyway to fix this? How do you do a factory reset?
Would be interested in an answer for this as well. I have the same situation, fast response to lock-button press when charging, few (2 +-1) seconds delay when not charging. I haven't rooted yet and have 2 pages of homescreen which have 5 widgets and 10 shortcuts/apps.
Is this normal behaviour, because the phone wakes up from a deep sleep state?
I think this is because of the phone being in sleep mode. It takes a second to wake up and increase the CPU speed and such... If you were to disable this, your phone would probably consume a LOT more battery. =/ But, heck, if it's only one second, it's worth waiting for, given that it's the most awesome phone you'll see until SGS3!
This used to happen all the time on JVK on SGS1.
This also happens to me and I just can not figure out what causes this? When the phone is on the charger it mostly doesn't happen. When I switch from Wifi to 3G, for a few seconds it doesn't happen... I cant figure it out what it is!
Same here, doesn't bother me that much though. What does bother me is, I first see the normal screen for just a moment and then the lockscreen. Anyone else got this to?

It's because when the phone is uplugged and has been locked for awhile, the CPU downclocks to conserve energy. And when you wake the device up, it takes awhile to get the display going and bump the CPU speed back up.
This happened with my old HTC Desire with battery optimizations. When the custom roms start rolling in for the G S2, I guarentee there will be a 'fix' for this at the expense of battery life.
FYI, the delay isn't there when the phone is on charge/plugged in as the CPU doesn't downclock as drastically.

Yep, I've got that, as does the other 4 Galaxy S2's that have passed through my ownership due to replacements. It's completely normal don't worry.

I use Widgetlocker great lockscreen mod and the normal screen does not come up first.
I understand your explanation but this did not happen to my desire and it doesn't happen all the time (switch from wifi to 3g and stuff). I can get used to it but it would be nice if it would be instant!

It happens rarely, but I've used both widget locker and the stock lockscreen on this phone and it happens on both.
And no, it didn't happen on the stock desire, it only happened on my desire with the battery optimizations which downclocked the CPU to 133mhz i believe, so the G SII must be downclocking to around that speed when not plugged in.

I think you are right about the downclocking because when I wake my SGSII RIGHT after a whatsapp message or something it works instantly. That means that the CPU is also awake to for a moment. Strangely, Setcpu doesnt affect this when I set 1200mhz on sleep. Oh well, lets await the custom roms!

I have been messing around with system tuner app for a while now and I really like the program.
I would like to hear from people who have used this app and their results with various tweaks that this app provides.
in the boot settings menu:
1. forcing both CPU's online: this should technically give you a better battery life, since it puts less strain on on cpu at a time, has anyone had a good exprience using this?
2. Boost app loading: anyone had any significant improvement with this?
My own settings:
I usually clock my phone at 1.5 (on demand governor) even though faux's kernel allows 1.7 max. I put max clock for screen off at 384 and conservative governor.
I have Undervolted before but do not see a very significant battery difference so I just left it alone.
I tried out the autokill option of system tuner, I only tried to kill the ghost apps, to refrain from the cpu from having to keep restarting the phone, but this also seems to kill battery life...In my experience any type of task killer however detailed will reduce battery and does not increase performance, unless you're running a poorly written app that just needs to be killed.
I use three other programs to monitor my phone
1. system pannel: very good at finding rogue apps that kill cpu...I highly recommend the pro version, you can get a history of what has used cpu up to a week.
2. Onavo and My data manger which basically monitor my wifi and mobile traffic, Onavo only monitors mobile network traffic and lets you restrict apps to only wifi. however it does not measure wifi use of data. My data manager monitor both wifi and network usage but does not give you any options to do anything with the apps, it basically tells you what program is using data while on wifi and mobile.
If anyone has found a good balance between performance and battery saving, please do share.
Thank you.
I read some other guy also mentioned the all cpus on thing. im not sure but isnt it the same as making both processors work at the same time which leads to phone overheating? I will give it a try though. from what you noticed, do you like it more with both cpu on or is better the way it was?

technically this is how it's supposed to work pic attatched, but I don't know if our roms or even the dual core rom that's out works in this manner, if it did we would be seeing significant battery savings

will see then. hey seansk do you notice some kind of hesitation when trying to unlock the phone? when u press the unlock button at the top. I think that boost app loading thing causes this cuz when have it enabled the unlock button you have to press it twice to work, while when disabling that boost app loading thing all works fine...

I have widget locker and havn't had that problem...I just flashed faux's latest kernel and am in the process of re calibrating my battery, it seemed to jump from 100 to 90 in about 10 minutes!!!!!! now I noticed that happening...but I havn't had time to fully replicate it...i need more time..I believe it might have something to do with fauxes kernel, he mentioned that when screen goes off he it puts the phone into a low power consumption mode, but also has something that when you turn it on, is quick to turn on!!! we'll have to wait and see.
If you've been following this thread, just wanted make a quick update...I want to give you my results with system tuner tweaking. Forcing both cores online is a bad idea. It will literally kill your battery in a matter of a couple of hours. ICS will hopefully be different and utilize the cores how they should be, saving some battery and giving the amaze longer battery life!
On the other hand reducing reducing clock frequency on screen off will help in battery life (obviously).

yes still stock rooted, I put the governor on conservative and put the frequency to 384 or around there, while screen is off.
What helps most I found out is turning off all the radios like wifi and network data, (basically putting phone on airplane mode). Instead of dropping down 15 percent in 6 hours it drops like 3 when I turn airplane on. But like I've said before it's unrealistic I'm always recieving google talk, google voice, facebook updates and I have to have both of these on which unfortunately eats a lot of battery.
I keep switching back and forth between faux's kernel and stock and I'm actually finding stock gives me better battery life for some reason. Even though I set the clock speeds on both at 1.5 ghz.

Battery Life
Major battery drain is the screen, when on eats up all the juice, dimming helps a bit
charge source: usb vs AC charge
usb charging takes quite a while, AC charge quicker (~ an hour)
Also, from my observation, usb charged battery runs out quicker than AC charge
Data Connection, Juice defender helps a lot
turn off sync you don't need, like HTC sense

well the problem is its not my screen. It's when the phone is idle, I usually lose about 15 to 20 percent over night. if I turn off the radios it drops down to about 3 to 4 percent overnight....like I said before I can't turn off the radios...I constantly use google voice, google talk, facebook. And they require both a cell connection and a data connection. I hate to pay for more apps...I've already paid for a bunch of apps to control and see my phone's usage of cpu and battery...is the app really worth it? wish they had a lite version

I have juicedefender ultimate, used it for a while actually...the only good use of it is turns off radios all other things when screen is off..all other things are negligible to battery life...I currently don't use it anymore. I tried multiple things/tweaks with it for about two weeks,...NO point lol...I want to be able to get my google talk message and my google voice texts, it annoyed the hell out of me when someone had sent something like 2 hours before and I would just get it when I woke my phone!!! I tried all kinds of things...but the only thing that actually worked was turning off radios during screen off which I don't want...I can't win lol....I can't have my cake and eat it too!!

For what it is worth I am running BulletProof 2.3.1 and last night I took phone off charger at 10:00 PM, alarm goes off at 3:30 snoozing every 15 min until 4:15...Battery was at 100% still. It is now 7:00 AM and battery is at 96%.
This was after flashing back to BP around 8:00 PM.
I've noticed the same type of activity when in Airplane mode. Extremely low power consumption - fantastic.
Is it possible maybe to undervolt the Wifi/BT/Mobile radios? Would that make any difference or am I off base here?

You had something setup wrong then I think.. you can change how often in syncs while the screen is off, the default setting is for it to turn on data for 1 minute every 15 minutes. Most people don't need to know things so bad that they can't work with a 14 minute delay(at worst), and of couse the internet is on while screen is on, when you're actually using it.
I thought I would need to use juice defender, but since I switched to bulletproof, my usage last me an entire day. From 8am till 1am, usually with some to spare. The only tweak I made to cpu was to enable 192mhz, it isn't like there is a performance drop, but it did make a notable difference in battery life.
If I wanted to I could use juice defender to get more than one day out of it, and I keep a spare battery on me in case I really need to use the phone.. but haven't really needed it.

How many apps have you installed?
I have recently realized that my phone had a lag/delay when turning of the screen to the lockscreen. When I press the power button, it would take about 1-1.5 seconds after I press the button for the screen to actually turn on. This does not happen while charging for me, only on battery. After screen on, the UI runs fine. This also never happened to me when I was on Gingerbread roms.
I am currently running Serendipity 9.2 with Cherrypicker kernal because I like the UI, but I still get the screen-on lag
I have tried ShoStock 2, Foxhound, AOKP, Serendipity 9, Mystic and ShirShirRomICS
and comboed those with all of the different kernals: Siyah, Fluxxi, Cherrypicker and NEAK. All this to no avail
I was wondering if this is only happening to me, because it slightly annoys me that I need to wait, since it makes the phone feel like its not as speedy as it should be.
If somebody can help me solve this I will be SOO GRATEFUL!
Thank you so much!

Maybe its because its not based on the Official i777 one?
but was it just me or did GB roms not have the delay?
Takes mine an avg of .5 seconds. Sometimes it's almost instant, other times it's near 1 second, but the avg would be close to .5 - I wonder if that will change the longer I've got this phone?

Try upping your lowest frequency step if you have your min set to 100/200mhz on your governor, change it to 500mhz and see if it stops happening. (Works for me, only happens on certain I/O schedulers and governors however.)

On demand and noop were the most stable for me. However it varies by device, not all sgs2 are created equal. I would suggest trying a few and see which runs most stable for your phone as the kernels governors vary (I was experiencing this issue with siyah and Neak on various aokp builds (35-37). Conservative/noop & vr with Neak and powersaver & performance / cfq & vr for both on siyah)
Currently on stock aokp 6-3 with tasks kernel, he truly overhauled the kernel, works better than any alternate kernel I've run so far with no issues on any oc/uc/uv settings.

If I recall correctly from the discussion many months ago (I think it was in Entropy's DD kernel thread for GB) there is basically a .65 second delay from power button press to screen on when waking from deep sleep on the SGS2 - and this is a hardware limitation, not software.
When you are seeing quicker screen wakes it is because the device was not in deep sleep at the time of the press of the power button. In the case of waking from a non-deep-sleep condition, probably the lowest idle clock speed or current clock speed (set by whatever background process has the phone awake) will be the controlling factor in how fast the screen wakes up.
I could be completely wrong here...someone please correct me if so...

Then is it possible to turn off deep sleep? And does it drain a lot of battery if it is not in deep sleep?
I realized when playing music or when the BLN notification is on it wakes instantly.

Yes it is possible to turn off deep sleep. There is an app in the market called "wakelocker" or something similar. You can find references to it in the very early ICS ROMs for the i777, as it was used to avoid the random screen-ons we were having. It can be set up to hold a permanent wakelock.
However, you should expect to drain between 5 and 10% battery per hour idle if you are wakelocked all the time. In other words, your battery life will completely tank if you do this. Most people around here do anything and everything they possibly can to prevent wakelocks, as this is the best way to improve device-idle battery life. As someone mentioned in the AOKP thread, screen on delay is a sign of good sleepiness (or something like that - I'm paraphrasing cause I don't want to bother to go look)... If I were you, I'd leave it be...
My SGS2 has a 5-6 seconds delay before waking up from deep sleep. I noticed that after I take the phone away from my ear after a call the screen takes very long to turn back on, as if the proximity sensor is sleeping away.
This is definitely not because of my last firmware update because it simply didn't happen after I installed it. It was just impressively fast. This new behavior started about 3-4 weeks ago, I can't figure out right now whether I installed something that could produce such behavior.

Yeah, mine as well and have no idea if it's a coincidence, seems like an old radio will get back to work after some beats...
Yeah as said above, it is a hardware thing combined with the state of the processor. The reason some people's turn on very rapidly is because their processor is already doing something, aka not sleeping. You should have at minimum probably a half second to maximum 2 second delay from pressing the button to your screen coming on. Otherwise your battery would be terrible.

I was just thinking the other day why did I get rid of my Inspire...
Oh yeah... cuz I have a thing for phones
I wasnt sure which sub-forum to post this in but...
I was wondering if anyone else notices that the lockscreen is sometimes very slow to pop up when you push the power button (coming out of a deep sleep/idle state)
I used to experience this problem with my S2 and even my Galaxy Nexus but I find its pretty bad sometimes on the S3 as well...
Does anyone have any clue/solution as to why this happens?
I can guess that the phone is in a deep sleep/idle state with the CPU clocked very low, and it needs some time to ramp up once the power button "awakes" the phone - but if you've ever pushed the button on an iphone or OneX you'll notice the lockscreen pops up right away ....so what gives?
We have arguably the fastest CPU/GPU combination in a phone right now and sometimes these small things bug me a bit...
also goes for stuff in the dialer like answering a call or ending a call - you'll notice a slight delay/lag.
I'm almost 100% sure that's a samsung/TWZ/software issue, but ya, just curious on how no one else noticed this since the S1 and S2.
Any feedback or tips would be appreciated
I've tried both stock LF2 and am now on WanamLite v1.3 now , so ive already gotten a feel for stock and custom rom/kernels , all of which are the same in terms of experiencing that lockscreen wake delay
have seen this issue on my s3. restart of the phone had cleared the issue.
Same situation here..
HI guys, did you find any solution?
My girlfriend's GS3 lags sometimes when the power button is pressed. The lockscreen doesn't appear for a few seconds. Have tried many restarts but it still occurs sometimes.
Thanks
It's deep sleep mode will happen on Samsung roms
Changing to an aosp rom will fix it but deep sleep does preserve a lot of battery life

Is there any way to turn the deep sleep off? Heck, it happens even if i try to unlock the screen a few seconds after locking it.
It is not occuring on my gs3..
same problem here
That's deep sleep, preserving you tons and tons of battery life.
When you open the phone and it's in deep sleep, it will take time to actually fire-up the CPU/GPU back to a high clock.
I don't see why people hate this, even laptops 'sleep' and re-open in seconds, same thing here and for the same reason, saving battery.

I don't see why people hate this, even laptops 'sleep' and re-open in seconds, same thing here and for the same reason, saving battery.

this exactly, nothing one can do about it. Sames is true for every microprocessors ive ever used in embedded systems. It takes time for every system to come out of deep sleep, yet they really do save *tons* of battery life.
If deep sleep were turned off everybody and their dog would talk about miserable battery life on the s3... on the order of about 8-10 hrs while not using it at all i would guess

Aaah, yes, and it is a well known fact that people with common sense use their laptop to check the time, or send a quick message.
I mean, really, who need a PHONE that reacts quickly??!
Anyways, those stupid apple-people seems to have bothered to make a quick reacting phone, but everyone knows they are just stupids!

Why rant at a three month old thread?
Does anyone else experience random delay when turning on (waking up) phone using either power or home button? Sometimes it takes almost 1.5 seconds before screen is lit up and sometimes only 200-400 ms.
If yes, is it a hardware problem or software and there are solutions to fix it?

When the phone go into deep sleep i think 1.5 seconds should be normal
because cpu running 200khz,So 200-400ms it can turning on.

Is there a way to prevent it from doing so? Previous generations of SGS didn't have this "feature" seemingly... At least the screen was turning on instantly, as far as I recall.
I daresay you can prevent it from deep sleeping somehow, expect battery drain though!

Something must be wrong with SGS3... Tried HTC One X today - the screen goes on like instantly. This is really upsetting.
Found app in the market that prevents from entering deep sleep "Wake My Android Pro".
Right now device seem to wake within bearable 0.5 seconds. Will see how much battery life it will lose...
I came from HTC one s and got sgs 3 from work recently. It is true that the delay when turning on the phone is well noticeable compared to HTC phones.
As OP said, sometimes longer other times shorter. But I don't think 1.5 seconds is normal.
The reason I am saying this is because I had experienced very long delay about 1 to 2 sec starting mid last week. Then after recalling what application had I installed last week, I found one which caused the problem also drained battery. Uninstall straightaway. Since then, things are back to normal, it's not instant turning on, but definitely less than half second.
So maybe checking any suspicious app?

If you prevent that from happening, your battery will last only a couple hours, if that much.
You can prevent that from happening, but most tools I know requires root. changing the CPU governor and powersave features will make your phone "snappier", at the expense of battery life.
that feature is present in dozens of Android phones (where CPU supports the feature, which is the vast majority of them)

No,without deep sleep battery already lasted 18 hours with some use. Cannot see any difference yet.
Also it doesn't make much sense - why previous generations were lasting as long as SGS3 but screen was turning on instantly?
the same problem exists in the galaxy Note 2

I think it could be related to the technology used for the amoled screen of SGS3 and Galaxy Note 2...
Small update: without deep sleep over night battery went down by only 4%.
One more observation: when phone is charging the delay is almost not existent.

Because the device cpu running minimum200mhz when charging
I think its the Exynos processor. Every one i had that had that processor had the delay. Had galaxy s2 sprint had the delay switched to the skyrocket on at&t no delay. Had the galaxy s3 at&t model no delay switched to the exynos international and delay again. I use the no lock app and doesnt seem to hurt battery.

Hmm, that doesn't make much sense to me... Did you mean at maximum CPU? Otherwise I'd assume waking it up would be slower or as slow...

Thanks. That could explain it.
I have a fascinate currently running HellyBean 4.03 and I have an anker 1800mah battery, I have the kernal running smartassv2 and sio with max cpu set to 1200. I used gmaps with navigation (gps plus cell data) last night for about 30 minutes and when I picked my phone up again it was hot. After turning everything off the phone cooled down again but I am curious what would have caused this? Rom? Kernal? Battery? Anyone else experiencing any overheating issues?
I would test the battery myself but unfortunately I cannot get to my original battery until this weekend.
Yeah, that always happens when it has to run at max or near-max clock frequency for a long period of time. As long as it isn't give-you-a-burn hot, nothing is wrong.

If this is normal then is there anything I could do to reduce the temperature? Maybe set max cpu back to 1000? I only ask because I am concerned if I tried to use navigation for a longer period of time the heat would end up causing some damage to the phone.

No its fine these phones are known for getting a little warm I have mine set to 1.4ghz 24/7 and its fine . back in the days when you could over clock your phone to 1.7ghz LOL I had my over clocked to 1.6ghz and it got so hot it would turn on and off it never hurt it lol
