Couple of Silly Questions about Vibrant ROMs

Couple of Silly Questions:
1). Is it possible to modify the open source ROMs available to use TouchWiz? I happen to be in the minority that like it. If not, however, no big deal.
2). Question for those that have flashed a new rom: Is it possible to get the Avatar app and the Sims 3 app to continue to work? Or do they just work out of the box?

It depends on what you mean by open source. Eugene373 was playing around with an AOSP build for the Vibrant, but it hasn't gone much of anywhere lately. His latest custom roms (Vibrant9/VibrantR3) were built primarily for getting rid of as much of Touchwiz as medically possible and they are basically stripped down and customized versions of the stock ROM. CyanogenMod 6.1 is the only other open source ROM being worked on and it's still in alpha. I don't see Cyanogen or any of the team members working on our port caring about Touchwiz as it sort of defeats the purpose of stock Android in the first place.
The basic point behind custom or aosp roms is that you don't like Touchwiz and prefer stock android, so it's a bit of a self-defeating strategy to think about adding back what the mods are deliberately removing.
If you like Touchwiz (as I do) then I'd say stick with stock and tweak/customize from there. It's too much work to approach from the other end and makes little sense. I'm basically stock, rooted, lots of the bloatware removed, MobileAP and the Captivate Camera installed, EXT3 lagfix...and that's about it. Phone is smooth as butter.
If you are running a custom rom, it is possible to simply push back the Avatar "app", as it's just a shortcut to the movie file on the sd card. You can also just run the VideoPlayer and start it from there regardless, so I guess that's a matter of preference. I got rid of the pointless icon. The Sims 3 install apk can be found in one of the system dump threads in the development section.

Own ROM, possible?

Hi there, good afternoon.
This might be already answered, but I just wanted to be sure if it's possible or not.
I've recently bought an X10 Mini Pro, and updated it to 2.1, but it still doesn't look like I want it too, so I was wondering this...
Is it possible to take the OS off from this phone, trim/clean it, and put it back to the phone as I want it without all the junk and with the apps I really want on it?
If this is possible and has been answered many times then I'm sorry to ask again, please just point me in the right direction/post and I won't bother you all no more, many thanks
Well you cant take the ROM of yet etc... but you can use root explorer to delete the stock apps that you don't want.. [Need Root]
Check these links out:

Read carefully, hope this helps.

Hi there,
Well, that will be much easier that what I had in mind
Thanks for the links, I've had a quick look at them and they are quite interesting, only 2 questions pop up in my head now...
Will I be able to update my phone with future updates if I root it?
If I root it, can I get rid of the stock launcher forever and use something like Launcher Pro or Helix instead?
Thanks for the answers
Yes and yes
i do what the peopples are telling you , with very pretty results, but i just dont delete the apps, i replace them with other apks, example semchome.apk (default se launcher) with the helix apk (saved as semchome.apk) the same with the keyboard (save keyboard pro apk as se keyboard apk), and eventualy really remove useless stuff like se play now and games demos... its pretty similar to a clean rom now, regards
Sent from my U20a using XDA App
Well, many thanks to you all for the info, appreciated.
I'll start immediately reading on how to root the phone, I hope is not too complicated to do
Or you can just change your phone to a Spanish generic build (you probably have a Vodafone one), update via SEUS and you should have a clean phone.
The one advantage of this is that if there are future updates, and you use SEUS to get up to date you will not have the junk installed on your phone.
Regards.
Hi there,
How do I know what build do I have? I bought this phone new from eBay, and it was supposed to be locked to T-Mobile, although it came unlocked and without anything from T-Mobile in it, or nothing I can see anyway
I don't see any application apart from the basic Sony ones, and a couple of games, but nothing that tells me this phone is from T-Mobile... it'd be great if I could know somehow the build it's in it, so I can check if I could get a cleaner one
Thanks.

[Q] How do you add tabs in Contacts and Phone app?

Hi all,
I have just installed lightning rom 2.5 and I have noticed that under both Phone and Contacts, there are missing tabs.
e.g.
Under Phone, the contacts tab is missing. I used to be able to slide to the right for more tabs.
How do I go about adding more tabs?
I tried searching but every time I add the word "tab" I get the Samsung Galaxy Tablet threads instead.
Also, under Security, the "SIM Change Alert" and "Remote controls" doesn't seem to be working, every time I tried checking the box, it freezes for awhile and then it says the setup has stopped working.
I wanted to post this in the lightning rom thread, but there's a 10 post restriction, and as such, I am posting here.
I hope someone can kindly help me.
Thanks in advance.
D
I don't know about remote control or sim change alert, but it is a well known change in ICS that those tabs are removed purposely, in their infinite wisdom. I don't agree with it, but it is what it is. One of the many reasons I'm staying on Gingerbread until find an overwhelming reason to go to ICS.
So if this ROM is ICS based, that's your answer.

Ya, will do.
Interestingly enough, My Samsung Nexus S is on ICS as well, but it has contacts in the phone app.

That's cause Nexus S is running AOSP android, and Galaxy S series (including the GS2) runs TouchWiz, which Samsung, in their infinite wisdom, have modded to their liking.
Edit to add: Lite'ning ROM is based on Samsung stock, so it uses the same system apps. This will hold true for any ROM based on Samsung stock, unless the ROM chef changes out specific apps, like the phone in this case.

Thanks for the clarification. I am new to android and have been reading up on how to root/flash custom Rom on my TF201, SG2 and NS one by one. Took me several hours of reading and searching, but I have managed to get them all rooted/flashed without bricking any of them
This forum is loaded with heaps of info, but sometimes it's a bit hard to search for some specific stuff;the 10 post limitation on custom rom threads make it hard for me to ask for help from the author.
Just wondering... if S2's lite'ning ROM is based on Samsung stock (non AOSP), how do people change out specific apps?

You need to be rooted, and you replace certain apk files in the /system/app folder. But you need to be certain to use files compatible with your particular build of Android.

I also had this problem. Found the fix on the Litening rom forum under Problems and questions.
I would link the page to you but since i am a new user, i am unable to lol.
Basically there is a zip file that u can flash which lets u add a samsung account and enables the remote settings features. ive tried it on litening rom 2.5 and it worked for me

Ah, cool, thanks for the link.
Going to flash to 2.7 first. I hope I don't have to do clear it to factor settings again.

[Q] Samsung Dive on Stock ICS

Hello,
I would like to ask the savy custom rom makers for some input on what im trying to do, ofcourse every1 else is welcome to share input as well. Basically i want to setup Samsung Dive feature without installing a custom rom. On my stock ICS AT&T rom - 4.0.3, I have gotten Samsung account to show up under the Accounts & Sync by placing MobileTrackerEngineTwo, Samsungservice, and SyncmlDS apk files in the /system/app folder. I have also created a Samsung account and have been able to login to it on my phone...now here comes the problem, i want to activate remote controls option which is suppose to be under Settings > Location and services (i think)...obviously AT&T is garbage and that option isnt there so now, im trying to search for ways to force that option to show up, and wanted to ask you if you guys knew anyway to get that option to show up? maybe by replacing few system apk files?
i have also tried searching on this forum and only found these 2 threads: one and two, i also know that these are not the same phones...i also know that there are other apps that can provide same features as samsung dive...
any constructive input is appreciated...
FI
soo the lack of reply with 8x views must mean, 1) there is no way to make this work OR 2) im in wrong section of the form to ask this type of thing, if its #2, should i move it to some other section? i know there are custom roms out there who have Samsung Dive fully functional and i was hoping the creators would shed some light on what they did to make that feature work...

[Q] Loading stock android question.

Hi. I have acquired an iphone 5 clone, model number MF353ZP/A, although I have no idea who manufactured it. It has an iphone theme to it which i want to remove and just have stock android running on it. I have looked but there seems to be no apps or skins running on it giving it this theme so I'm thinking I will need to reload Android to get rid of the current OS completely. I am also pretty sure it isn't as easy as that so have come on here to basically ask how! Any help appreciated, I just want to see/run a normal android environment on it but don't know how to. Thans, Steve.

Unfortunately Android doesn't work like that. You can't just reinstall the OS and it come out with no skin. Without knowing who made it or what firmware is being used then even trying to make changes like this could end up in a brick. Your best bet for the time being would be to just install a 3rd party home launcher like Nova, Apex, Go, etc.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cpuid.cpu_z&hl=en
Something like that app will help narrow down what you have by giving you some details on the chipset, RAM, resolution, etc. With that info, it might be possible to see if there are other options for your phone.
