[Q] Fix Market Limitations - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've looked around for some possible solutions to give the eris full market capabilities (regardless of compatibility) with no success. Is there any way to modify the build prop (or something else) to allow the market to think the eris is another phone which has unlimited access to the market? I have had no success with the Eris Market Fix App by the way.
Not sure if it helps but in another thread a while back I noticed tenzomonk posted this:
"as for the build.prop... you'd want to find the following line: "ro.build.fingerprint="
i've provided two (2) examples below... first being from an HTC Incredible running a 2.2 ROM... second being from a stock Eris (2.1 ROM).
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon_wwe/inc/inc/inc:2.2/FRF91/231334:user/release-keys (Incredible)
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/htc_desirec/desirec/desirec:2.1/ERD79/185970:user/release-keys (Eris)"

I don't have the knowledge to help you trick the market into thinking you have a different phone, but why don't you just download the .apk files for the apps you want and sideload them? I guess that isn't a good idea for non-free apps but for free apps it works fine. That's what I did with angry birds before it was available for the Eris. Honestly though, if it doesn't show up on the market for the Eris it probably wont run well if at all. Developers don't want to limit the number of people that can download their app. They generally only do it if there are issues with their app on a particular phone.

Why not think of the big picture and "solve" the core problem ?
Sure, your suggestion will work until then, but do we do this forever ?

Personally, I believe the issue is with the Market itself, especially since Gingerbread was released. People on multiple phones and in turn, multiple ROMs, are having similar issues. This isn't unique to the Eris or any of the ROMs from here.

Yeah I guess you would have to sideload any apps you can't get on the market but I don't see the problem with doing that. The VAST majority of apps can be found in the market.

[Q] How can we avoid the new market?

I'm not certain how many on here have used the new market, but i find it HORRENDOUS!
I plan on moving an old version of Vending.apk to system/app to replace it.
My concern is the market will automatically update. Can anyone comment who has tried this already? Is there any way to avoid it updating, or can the ROM developers prevent this in their custom ROMs?
I really have no clue why developers are using it.... its just SO bad. This is the first time I have been disappointed with Googles direction with Android.
how did it automatically update?? OTA???

actually the MARKET does auto-update itself. how do i know? because i received the new market without any mods to the market the night people started to report the update. plus theres a 1st party apk called MARKET UPDATER.
100% sure this will work. go to SETTINGS/APPLICATIONS/make sure the filter is set to ALL and scroll down to MARKET... click it and hit UNINSTALL UPDATES. this method worked when i received the the SIMILAR tab update, but im not sure if itll completely remove the NEW revamped market.
HIT THANKS BUTTON PLZ =) no need to install an old vending.apk

Well, the Market DOES AUTO-Update, even if you Uninstall Updates.... that's the problem.
I suppose I will move an old Market and replace the current one in system/app... but I imagine that if I freeze (titanium backup) the Market Updater app that may lead to problems? I don't think that app can be removed and not cause FC's... I would love to know that is incorrect.
If that is the case, I imagine it would be easy to avoid the new market. Anyone else hate this new updated market and tried this yet?

i just tried the "uninstall updates" method and i will let you know how long it takes for my phone to update back to the new market
it does auto update and installs in data/app not system/app
Check the cache for the update apks. I all ready have two in my cache.
I thought I may get used to the UI.... I am not. Still FUGLY and not intuitive.
Has anyone tried
1. Uninstalling the update with data & wifi off
2. Using a shell and changing the permissions of the Market.apk to read only?
Anyone had success with this?
Uninstalling the update does nothing for me now.

Download the axura rom. Extract go to system apps then get the vending app and put it on ur current rom for some reason... Axura s market doesn't work like others it never updates.
I used it for 2 weeks and it never updated. Try that but save your current vending in case out doesn't work.
As for me my new market its working fine a few complaints but its alright for now...

can you just post the market.apk here? downloading an entire ROM just for one app sounds really unappetizing haha
outside of the above suggestion,I have personally tried every method you could possibly think of to permanently revert back to an old market, but this btch is quite relentless. I may create a Nandroid backup and uninstall the Market Updater....just to see what happens.
^ yeah, I have given up hope and now just hope Google can make another "improvement" to the market. It needs to change... I was LOVING the now older version with "Related" added, but the new UI and 15 minute policy just sucks (for me anyway).

[Q] [APP] "Jet Car Stunts" ...successfully installed on our Eris?

Has anyone been able to get Jetcarstunts to install and run on the Eris? I have not. I suspect it is because our CPU is outdated, but i don't know.
Also, I've run eris market fix, but it still seems that not all apps are listed. Like jetcarstunts for example. I DL it from a link on androidgod.net and had no luck installing it.
I'm on FroShedYo V10. Thanks!

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but can't devs choose which devices can see the app or not?
Odds are the dev made it so that only high end devices can download it.
odds are even if you are able to install it it will not be playable =) its eris, cmon=)

[Q] Can I fool the market about my system version?

I have a tablet with android 2.3.5 on it, but I notice there are lots of apps written for android 3.0 honeycomb. I'd like to play with some of them, but the market tells me the apps are not compatible with my device. And it won't let me even download them.
Is there a way I can make my tablet report to the market that it's running 3.0?
Thanks.
Dan
Even if you did that, the apps still wouldn't work. They would just say "error parsing package" before even installing. If they "happened" to install, they would just force close on start.

I'm going to disagree with this. There are plenty of apps that don't work on certain devices according to the Market yet run perfectly fine on those devices. When it comes to apps made specifically for 3.0, you're more likely to run into problems with functionality, force closes, or screen size. Parsing errors are generally from a problem with the download or package itself, but I could be wrong.
Your options are to change the build.prop to read 3.0 (assuming that's how the Market discovers your build) or to download from another source. I don't know if Amazon does some type of device check or not, but you can try that.
If you decide to try editing your build.prop, back it up first just in case.

Yes, this is wrong (in some cases). Parsing package errors occur based on firmware version. If you tried to install an app made for Gingerbread on Froyo, you would get this error. Since the OP wants Honeycomb specific apps to be able to run on Gingerbread, this error is highly likely to occur. Even if the an app worked, then there would be major functionality problems.
I think I follow: if the functionality the app is expecting isn't there, then there *will* be a problem. That makes sense.
However, I have managed to get my hands on a Motorola utility (MotoPrint) from a xoom image I found on the web, that *did* work. Admittedly, it was either going to work or not.
In this instance, it piqued my interest. And made me think that the app creators *may* be, um, overselling the "newness" of their apps by promoting them as "honeycomb." And I just wanna play. XD
I've already tried editing build.prop to no avail tho. So that's why I'm soliciting ideas.
Dan
Try and sideload the apps in question? But as posted some apps that require HC will not run or run correctly on GB.

Golleeee. Ah sure am smurt!! XD
Dealing with apk files can be easier than the android market.
And everything is free if you know where to look *cough*
Based on your first post, google will not allow you to buy the apps you want, correct?
That's not a fault of anything you are doing. Google doesn't want you to buy those apps apparently. That doesn't mean you can't "get" them.

All of the apps I have been viewing on Tablified are Honeycomb. Many are free. There are few nice ideas that I'd simply like to see if they work on my VeganGinger G-tab.
Google simply says the app is incompatible with my tablet, and greys out the install button.
So far, this is the most annoying thing in Android to me. Dammit, just let me try it. I know I may not get *all* the functionality. I'd just like to see if it's a tolerable thing for me. Without needing to jump thru hoops.
Dan
Welcome to fragmentation.
Heres a legal source for free apks.
http://androiddev.orkitra.com/download/apps/
On a sidenote I use a Galaxy S Captivate with 2.2 froyo.
There are some apps (games mostly that I have encountered) that will not run at all on less than android 2.3.x regardless of where you get the apk from.
So I can only assume the same is true with 2.3.x/3.x
Thanks! I appreciate it!

NC apps from bn store to cm7

I want to be able to buy BN apps for the NC on CM 7.1 WITHOUT restoring stock. Tried installing shop.apk as well as all the BN*.apk files from 1.3 to system/app within CM7.1, but shop wouldn't install.
Also, are the NC apps somehow optimized for tablets/NC?
If you extract the apk and then install on CM7 it should work.

I too would be interested in this. So I guess what the OP and I would be looking for is a walk though on how to do something like this. I am assuming I would have to install ADB on my PC and then what? I know about ADB push for manually side loading stuff, but for copying from the device?
The second part is I am nootered. I don't know about the OP, but would that make a difference? Supposedly ADB wireless is already installed on my nook.
To get an apk from the nook with adb, you'd do:
adb pull /data/app/filename.apk
Assuming its a data app, and not a system. Also note, it's all case sensitive.
Are these apks mentioned above specific to each device? Or could they just be pulled from someone's and posted here (unless paid apps of course)?
If so, happy to do that.

Let me more clear. I am looking for a way to install the bn store on cm7 and purchase apps from it to install the apks.
Seems I can't. That is all. The store relies on the native framework.
Bro, that's not what your first post says. If u know how to do this, print a logcat or tell us what kinda errors you're getting so someone can help. If the apps are in fact different, i could compare the apk to an original and see what is changed.. And then maybe progress.

Hey bra, what apps you talkin' bout?
What I've done:
Copied Shop/BNPolicy.../BN [every other app]/ from the 1.3 zip in system/app to my CM7.1 install into system/app. Changed permissions, rebooted. Shop fails to install. I think the shop.apk is only meant for froyo (is 1.3 still froyo?). I might tear about the apk and try to change the manifest, but if anyone else has any ideas, let me know.
In any event, I'll probably wait until the 1.4 rollout and see what they have, and how easily that could be ported over to CM7.1.
TO REITERATE: I want to be able to buy BN apps for the NC on CM 7.1 WITHOUT restoring stock. Also, are BN apps actually optimized for NC? Anyone care to post a freebie apk from stock NC and see how it compares to a market equivalent?

That would be interesting. To purchase apps using the stock shop in a non stock rom.
I was just hoping to run something besides stock and not lose the $$ I had invested in purchased apps through the stock store by being able to run them on CM7 or HC or whatever comes along.

You can always dual-boot. It is a minor inconvenience to reboot everytime, but will do the job until something better comes along.
Hey all,
I know this is an old thread, but with cm9, CM could become my go to rom on the NC (it was rooted stock).
I realized that what I liked about stock was the way it used the status bar. This was something cm7 tried to emulate, but it is smoother in ics. In addition, the tablet style apps work well on ics.
Anyway, back to the discussion at hand.
I have been able to sideload every app I purchased from the nook store to my cm7 (and the ones I tried, cm9) partition successfully.
However, I heard there were issues using the system app.
I will start to play with the preloaded apps when I get a chance (which will be a while, we have exams this week).
I will report back as I do. Here is what I already know...
The shop will not work on gingerbread (or ics) without an edited manifest (or edited buildprop).
It was made under froyo.
I will report back when I learn more.
~Leko
Just thought I would post progress...
All apps I purchased from BN work (I did not buy many, but they do work).
As does Chess, and Crossword (I assume soduku will work).
However, none of the system apps do.
I tried running and installing Reader, browser, shop, launcher and a few others as well as the settings app. And, none of them would install or allow titanium to install either. This is with an edited build prop.

How to you prevent google play upgrade?

I have the apk for the 3.4.4 market. I froze the market updater but when I install the Market apk within 5 minutes it updates to play. Is there a way to prevent the upgrade?
What's the big deal with preventing the update? Looks like exactly the same market with a name change to me. Just wondering what I'm missing and in no way trying to be a jerk.

You dont want to stop the update because if you do, you will not be able to get apps or update current apps with the old market.
Anything else that relies on the newer market will fail as well. I doubt you could stop it anyway..
Install an older version of the Market and use Titanium Backup to freeze the Market Updater...but there's no good reason to not update.
The new market is great! LOL, it is pretty much the same. The only difference if you have a tablet and that allowed you to purches music through the app. Again looks pretty much the same. New name

personally the name change is annoying as all hell, google quit trying to program your brand name in my brain, when i want to buy and app or something i want to go to the market or to the store, not go to the google and pick up a new app.
every-time i'm in a rush trying to pull something from the app market i can't find the bloody icon because i'm looking for the market or in the old location on my app drawer, minor change i know but i have caught myself cussing at google when i needed to re-d/l my gps app after it crashed during a trip i as on a few days ago.
any chance of renaming the new app back to market without root?
Just use a launcher and if already do, just change the name duh..lol that's what I did ....

The only way to get around using Google Play is to not use android. What you're asking is the equivalent of saying you want to use an iDevice without the app store.

Memory needs > any update
I have a very good reason for not wanting auto-upgrades. Radio Shack misled me about the HTC Wildfire S and now I've got jack for memory. I have four apps installed, use only the native message app, and I'm lucky to have 25mb free. Anything less than that and the phone works as well as the Pony Express does today.
FWIW, Tandybot told me I could always install apps on the SD card. In theory, yes, but so few app devs code apps to work in that manner. Lesson learned.
kite edit: SNIP! No need for that kind of attitude around here, I'm afraid.
