This is version 1.3.3 of the Google News and Weather widget.
I have tested 1.3.4 but I found that news sorting as not OK some times.
How to use:
- install with adb install -r GenieWidget.1.3.3.apk or whatever method
- add News and Weather widget to you home screen (I use 4x1 News and Weather)
- select Google news items (they are localized)
- add custom news items (see below)
The info the app uses comes from Google news. If you add custom news try the keywords first at news.google.com to see the results.
I like to add custom tweakers.net info so I type: site:tweakers.net as keywords
Weather comes indirectly from weather channel. So lookup you location first at Weather Channel.
(un)install info:
If it is system app (in ROM) overwrite original:
adb remount (mounts /system rw)
adb push GenieWidget.1.3.3.apk /system/app/GenieWidget.apk
adb shell rm /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]@[email protected]
adb reboot
If it is user app just use:
adb install -r GenieWidget.1.3.3.apk
adb shell rm /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]@[email protected]
adb reboot
so app and dex go to:
Apk:
/data/app/com.google.android.apps.genie.geniewidget-1.apk (user app)
Dex:
/data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]@[email protected]
Data:
/data/data/com.google.android.apps.genie.geniewidget
Cache:
/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.genie.geniewidget.news-content-cache
Cheers
EDIT1: looks like there is a bug in the genie widget. If you add more then 2 own news subjects
it cannot sort these pages by date. Please confirm.
EDIT2: to solve above problem it looks like I had to clear /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]@[email protected]
and reboot
EDIT3: Added 1.3.11 Runs from 2.3 and up, looks better on ICS/JB, no big changes.
Thanks.
Out of seven different GenieWidget.apk I found, yours is the only one that works on my custom Samsung/Android ROM.
On the weather graph, what is the shaded area supposed to represent. I thought originally it was to distinguish between day and night, but its always moving to odd times, and disappearing all the way sometimes.
I am a bit confused about the version numbers....
GenieWidget.1.3.3.apk
GenieWidget_1.3.04.apk
1.3.04 or 1.3.4 ? at the top i see 1.3.4 ...
Which one is the latest ?
Sorry about the confusion but 1.3.04 = 1.3.4
Cheers
so i had the latest one, which is working very well on my Flytouch 3 !!
Thanks a lot, this app works great!
Hi, I have this problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14708408&postcount=5269
Try clearing /data/dalvik-cache and reboot.
Reboot will take longer as all the dex files need to
be recreated on boot.
Cheers
Unfortunately, 1.3.3 or 1.3.4 do not work correctly.
Maybe the problem is in ROM by Tytung :-(
Awesome! Thanks, I've tried like 6 different versions and none of them worked on my Bionix-Frost ROM.
Thank you very much, works great on my Ideos U8150 !
Thank you very much! It works on Puse!
Would be possible to create a version with transparent background (1.3.4)? Thank you in advance!
Genie Widget 1.3.04 works great on my stock Bionic. Thanks!
It was installed at:
/data/app/com.google.android.apps.genie.geniewidget-1.apk
Why is the apk named with "-1" on the end?
Thanks very much for this!
Working great on my rooted Samsung Galaxy S2 with Criskelo's ROM on Gingerbread 2.3.5 KI3
Thanks mate!
solved a bad Italian translation for some week day with 1.3.4 version.
thanks
Thanks man! Just what I was looking for! Had this widget on my latest Defy rom, but lost it when I flashed a new ROM. Works perfectly and the feature to add custom topics for tabs is just awesome!
Works perfect on GSII T989 running ICS. Thanks
awesome, thanks, 1.3.3 worked for me on samsung exhibit 2, Peach sunrise ROM. I'm glad you posted it since it didn't work once backed up on titaniumbackup
Yay

Hello,
I am interested by your ROM, but before updating my phone, I would like to know which applications I must download in order to add them (if they would miss).
Could you give more indications on the contents of your ROM?
- List and version of integrated HTC applications,
- List and version of the integrated utilities.
Thank you very much.
PocketHand2-2.0.13
Thank you for the nice ROM. For changing fonts on some icons into Japanese, I need a kind of graphical registry editing software, "PocketHand-2" , but the ROM rejects its activation, and creates a shortcut of "OPERA" in the program screen?! Hoping you will help me out.
It seems that this is the first time I start a new thread.
Hi, all. I want to know how to install two versions of one same application at the same time.
As a matter of fact, I want to install Opera Mini 4.2 China Version and Opera Mini 4.2 Internaional Version at the time. But...Since Opera Mini 5 makes it difficult to describe the question, here takes HelloWorld.apk as an example.
Well, there are two versions of the application "HelloWorld": 1.0 and 1.1. (This is just an example)
I have installed HelloWorld 1.0 on my phone, and when I try to install HelloWorld 1.1, the 1.0 version will be replaced. But...I want to have both of them installed on my phone. That is to say, there will be two "HelloWorld" icons in the app drawer.
I use APKTool to extract the com.hello.world.apk into some "text" files, including an AndroidManifest.xml and a lot of *.smali files. In the AndroidManifest.xml, I saw this:
<manifest package="com.hello.world" versionCode="100" versionName="1.0">
I chaged the value "com.hello.world" to "com.goodbye.world". Then I re-build the apk file and transferred it to my phone.
I installed the modified package, it was successfully installed and I see two "HelloWorld" icons in my app drawer!
I try to launch the HelloWorld 1.0, it succeeds.
I try to launch the HelloWorld 1.1, it FCs immediately.
Well, this is my situation. How can I make both of them launch-able in my phone? Is it possible? What should I modify apart from "package" filed in AndroidManifest.xml?
Thanks a lot.

Well I'm not an android programmer but if I'm understanding you correctly you did the following (in the order I'm listing them):
1) Installed helloworld 1.1 (which over-wrote v1.0)
2) Opened the APK for helloworld 1.0 and made the manifest change
3) Installed the modded helloworld 1.0 on your phone
From a programmer point of view (just not with Android), if you followed the above scenario what is happening is HW1.1 installs it's files which are updated versions of the previous one (why else install an update). When you modded the HW1.0 you only changed the name and nothing else.
What is happening is when you go to install the modded version it's overwriting the newer files with the older ones since the phone is assuming the modded app is an entirely new program and allows the process to occur. This is why the modded one works and the 1.1 won't since the files it needs are the wrong version.
The only option of really have is to mod the actual program to look for different filenames, but without the source code to that app, that isn't going to happen.
Basically you need to have version 1.1 use the default files, and with the modded 1.0 you need to tell the software to "look" for the updated filenames (just don't forget to rename the actual files too).
Short of all that, as far as I know your SOL.

Great thanks to your reply. But...
Android uses .apk files to install and run the application. When installing an apk file, the package installer just copys the apk file to /data/app directory and "register" the program in the system. The apk itself will not be "extracted" or anything else. That is to say, an apk file can be installed, and also can be run.
On the other hand, the apk will generate some files in /data/data directory when running. I am considering that it was these file that made the modded version FCs. I will try to look into these files to see will this works...
English is my second language, hoping that I did not made many grammar misktaks...
+1 on this topic. It's been a year and a half since the last reply and I've done a bit of searching online to find no answers. I anyone have some feedback on this? I'd ultimately like to use this to install two Google voice applications. I actually have an app from a blacked out version with a different icon. But if I install it it will overwrite the original Google voice app

I'd also like to know if that's possible. Even if it were possible, and an updated version of helloworld is relaeased (Say, HelloWorld v1.2), which version would it replace? Would it replace the (original) HelloWorld 1.1 or the (modded)HelloWorld 1.0?
Yes. Titanium backup. Profiles. These are the keywords.

It would replace the only legitimate version found, the unmodded one. The point of modding the APK is to make Android see it as a completely different app, and not think of one as an update to the other.

that feature on tibu is for switching DATA profiles basically so two or people can play the same game or whatever and keep they're progress separate like having multiple saved games. its not for switching versions of an app
I've tried to googling how to install multiple same applications in one device, but i didn't found anything how to do that simply...there are lot of stuff using ant and ruby script, but don't understand with that..so anyone figured out how to install multiple same apps with simply method? because i want to install operamini 7.5,but I've already instaled version 6.5...

Possible solution
Hi there,
While searching for a solution I found this thread and as it is one of the first results in google I thought to share what I found (didn't try yet) :
http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/19935/how-to-keep-two-versions-of-an-app-installed
It's first answer has a guide how to run two versions of same app throigh modifying onee of them with apktool.

Hi
I would also like to do this for Google earth app I want to have both version 7.1.3 and 8.0.1 because the earlier version has more features but the latest looks more beautiful so I read the instructions from that link but it is way too complicated for a noob user like me plus judging from the last message it seems it hasn't been resolved so isn't there an app or xposed mod that does this automatically ?

Used your ROM in HD2 until i don't find any English version anymore. Your taste for colors and icons pleases me a lot.
I still have my HD2, and even if i use more android than WM on it, whenever i want to change back, yours is always the one i pick.
Keep up the good work. Will test this one in 30 minutes.
Adblock missing
ROM tested extensively. About smoothness, every ROM here including stock is smooth enough for a dual core phone.
Overall, quite an achievement, just adblock is missing but can be installed afterwards.
And like being told, it's not Rooted, so another kernel installation is needed.
Battery life cannot be concluded yet.
For first work, bravo! =)

Any update planned for this ROM ?
Hey People,
just wanted to share my Configuration of the new XWKS9 Firmware. Android 2.3.5 and Baseband KS2 ! Download it from here.
All Credits, of course, for the following go to their respective Authors/Devs !!
Please take care of the Information and be careful while flashing !
My Problem with the FW was first that it didn´t start correctly after flashing. Solution : Hold Power + Home till you get into Recovery, then Wipe everything, reboot, it will work
Once you got booted up, Power off and go into Recovery again, then flash the CF Root Adaption from here here make sure that you download the
CF-Root-S5830-v3.7-b82.zip (11.95 MB)
After flash, you have the KS9 Firmware rooted and some bonus :-D
Many thanks to ketut.kumajaya for this !!!
The Language in the Rom is Dutch first. You need to go to
"Instellingen" then "Landinstelling en tekst" then "Taal selecteren" and then choose your Language.
To get Access to the System Folder of your Phone, use ES File Explorer from the Market. (Switch to "Root Explorer" and Mount System "RW" in Settings")
Now delete the Samsung Stuff you don´t want, or need. But be careful, some .apk are very essentiel and deleting them may brick your FW so you have to reflash !
A list of Files that can be deleted will follow here ! (.apk & .odex)
- Clockwidget - Deskclock - Dualclock - Forest - GenieWidget - jobmanager - Marketupdater - MyFiles - Protipps - Samsungapps - SamsungAppsUna3 - SamsungWidget_ProgramMonitor - SamsungWidget_Stockclock -Swype - syncmldm - thinkdroid
These are the Apps I don´t use, delete with caution !
Just make a Backup in Recovery (that came with the CF Root Adaption ) before you delete files, so you can easily restore your Rom !!
Browsing in XDA-Forums I found this :
The Gingerbread Keyboard, installable File from here
Thanks to hotaru for this !!!
The Stock Launcher (Touchwiz) isn´t very nice I think, my choice was GO Launcher EX from the market, you can customize so many things with it!
But I also found a nice Launcher here many thanks to claystoneinc for this !
If you don´t like the Facebook Widgets you may try this from Kamma, many thanks to him for that !! There is another one I found but havn´t tested, Screenshots do look promising ! Get it from here Thanks to ericcsonka
I am going to upload a little Collection of very useful Tools I found here in the Forum and in different Roms I used. Don´t Panic, it´s all freeware, all Files are also available trough the normal Market or from XDA Forums! If there is anything that isn´t correct please let me know !!!
I hope that this helped a little, yes I know, noone asked for it
Update : Here are the Tools Tools
I was looking to do this too. Most of the steps seems to make sense to me. Especially the list of apps to delete is useful.
One question though: Why would you install the Gingerbread keyboard seperately?
KS9 is Gingerbread right?

Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA App
Hey guys !
As announced today, I will release a mod for our Xperia X10.
The full review is available here.
You can download it here (mediafire link)
WARNING The rom zip file is a CLOCKWORKMOD BACKUP. Means you musn't flash it as a update.zip. You have to unzip it with your computer to push the "clockworkmod" folder yo your SDCARD. If you don't fail, you must be able to restore my backup with CWM recovery.
Of course, flash the same kernel i used. it's this kernel. Thanks @Achotjan
Maybe this rom works with this kernel too. Thanks @scritch007
Lets list all the apps and features i added (clic show to show x) ):
- Google Search 4 and libs from Lollipop to enable voice recognition.
- Google Fit if you want to lose weight because you spent too much time to compile
- File Manager (The same who was in my previous mod.
- Android 4.2.2 Clock
- Kitkat Fonts
- Titanium backup standard
- White icons on statusbar and Lollipop network icons
- Lollipop launcher
- Nexus 6 Wallpaper
- Cyanogenmod 11 Changelog in about this phone
- ANDROID L PREVIEW, NOT LOLLIPOP FOR NOW easter egg. Using eggster xposed module
- Xposed installer with Xposed Gel Settings, Gravitybox and eggster
- Google Keyboard 4, with marerial design of course
- Android Lollipop Bootanimation
- Google Play Store 5.0.38 with material design
- Overclock to 1267MHZ set on boot, ondemand governor and KSM enabled, for SDE kernel users
- You'll see
- Forgotten it : DPI set to 200
BUGS :
- Some rares random graphic glitches
- Camcorder
- Same as CM10
- Random reboots if you let CPU run @1.2Ghz for some users. To fix it, goto Settings; scroll down to Performance; and change max frequency to 1.1Ghz or lower.
- You tell me
If they are modders able to backport Lollipop settings, deskclock and systemUI to Jellybean 4.1, please PM me to make it awesome
Dont forget the zip file is a backup and not an update.zip.
Install Material design Google keep : http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/keep/keep-3-0-03-apk/
This mod is based to @scritch007 CMX10, so it's 4.1.2. It's NOT Lollipop, and not Kitkat. It's themed Jelly Bean.
Happy flashing
Well done on this
I don't use my X10 for anything meaningful anymore these days but might have to give this a shot.

Hope you enjoy it. Will try to mod apps but im noob for this dont expect perfect lollipop IU therefore

Just fired up the ROM. Loving the boot animation! I got into the main homescreen but then it froze and rebooted I know why - it's because as you said above, the default clock speed is 1.2Ghz. My X10 has never been able to handle anything above 1.113Mhz, so unfortunately I can't get into the settings fast enough to change it before it freezes
However, what I can see on the homescreen looks amazing! You've done a fantastic job with the presentation of the ROM.

Flash CMX10 kernel with flashtool and boot the rom with it. I think it will reset the CPU settings.
Thanks buddy

Maybe because default clock is 1267Mhz. Goto settings; performance and set clock to 1GHz, and make sure you use SDE kernel.
some screenshots or video review of this rom would be very nice.
