ok ive looked through here and have been doing kiddy style roms but no luck with makeing a rom to match what i have in mind. first, i have a android eris. second, im looking for a rom, or help to build one, that is for a phone that is deactivated. i.e. i transfered the line to another phone and started to flash new and different roms to learn as i go. third is that im looking for a rom thats not a "phone" rom more of a pocket pc rom. i dont need (let alone have ability) to send messages or make calls but insted i use with my wifi and connect while around the house/work. while i mainly use for games i also use for things like web, gmail, xda app...so on and so forth. can anyone tell me, post, or help me with what apk's to remove from favorite rom to make a more personal style for myself and my girl? thanx.
ps personal rom i like best so far is xtrSENSE5.0.1.

hi guys,
Please bear with me, i am very inexperienced to this. I have a Sprint TP & while I dont hate it, some things really annoy me. Im not sure if I need a custom rom or just a few tweaks & clean up the exisiting software, hopefully you can help.
THINGS I HATE:
Screen Lag from portrait to landscape. Sometimes I have to open & shut the phone 5 x's & take out the stylus before it switches. & general TF3D lag.
Constant notifications of messages being sent!
Not having month calender view be default.
A better way to lock keys rather than having to punch in #'s (the pre has a nice lock feature)
Battery life.
Flash Support?
A straigt up contacts button without having to load my fav, then hit a button, then load.
If some1 could point me in the right direction that would be cool. Ive read a bit & a custom rom seems a little scary, so Im nervous to do anything that complex.
THANKS!
Aight I'll bite. The screen lag your S.O.L. without changing to a custom ROM. You can try some of the reg hacks but I never found anyone them to be worth it on the stock rom.
You can change the message sent notifications in the reg or you can find a cab some where. (Searching helps) but most custom roms already have this.
Calender view is an easy one just open the calender and hit menu>tools>options and change start in to month view.
Battery, again custom rom.
Flash support. its there, again searching helps.
I noticed a huge performance and battery life increase when I quit using TF3d and 6.5 default for the today screen on any rom. You can find all those settings when you hit start>settings>today
hope that gets you started. has far which custom rom to start out with. MightyMike, Juicy, and, SSS are good starts.
Overall, do your homework, get your **** straight and go to town. It can be fun trying new software and roms on your phone and all the info is here and on ppcgeeks.
Thanks for the help. Ive read a few things here & there, but it does get confusing & i just dont want to brick my phone, that is why i am tentative about custom roms... I found a new browser for flash support (skyfire) but it looks like crap. Maybe over the weekend i can read up on the custom roms you suggested. Thanks again.
Disable SMS Sent Notification
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings] Set SMSNoSentMsg to 1
I'm new too. There's lots of good stuff up in the Raphael Wiki to get started with.
so, ive seen this before
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settin gs] Set SMSNoSentMsg to 1
Where is that exactly?
& i was just over @ pcgeeks, is seems you can put the stock rom onto your phone if needed. Is this true? Would you be able to bring it in for service if you do that? or would they be able to find out you flashed it?
You can flash the stock rom back onto the phone. Just remember to relock it as the last step.

if you see anything with HKEY or HKLM it is referring to a registry edit. To do any of registry edits you need a registry editor such as (but not limited to) PHM or Resco explorer. These are free .cab files that can be downloaded automaticly to your phone.
What they are saying at PPC is that if you flash any roms to your phones and something happens to it or you need to take it in for repair you HAVE to change it back (or flash it back) to its original operating system...you know the laggy nonresponsiveness lol. Otherwise you run the risk of never being able to buy a phone from that company again and I dont know what else but I keep imagining public castration...which is extremly scary to me <_>
As far as battery life etc, there are some tweaks for the battery life and certain ROMS actually save battery life. There are also some programs that save battery life as well.
Theres a locking function called JMZ lockscreen that is included in some roms...personally I dont use it but then again its user preference.
I would recommend if you are wanting to change your phone a little. Look into how to unlock your phone so you can start flashing roms. The initial process takes a little bit of time, but its like riding a bike everything takes time. feel free to email me if you want and have any questions and Ill do my best to help you out.
*edit* One last thing that is CRUCIALLY important. When you go to flash a rom if you are a CDMA (verizon, etc) carrier do NOT try to install a GSM (att, etc) rom on your phone or you will kill it.
I will definatley be reading up on this stuff this weekend. I cant stand typing messages sideways anymore. Thanks for your help. Im sure Ill be posting a few more questions soon!
Hello all!
Well i've used many search tools here on site, and i've also done some cutom searches on my phone, and yet can't find what i KNOW is here somewhere.
So i'm asking for a little help to point me in the right direction! I'm on the Samsung Fascinate (obviously) running 2.3.3 EC09 with Kernel 2.6.35.7
I would love to get my hands on a cutom dialer, and maybe even in addition to some customization onto contacts list look and feel.
Now directing me to themes and apps is not what im looking for, i dont care to add any full phone theme, i make my own custom (yet basic) themes, just wondering if there is any pre-made dialer replacements, and just maybe a contact list to go along??
I'm almost certain someone will call me blind and point me right there, but I really have came to my witz end looking, and have probably looked right over it!
Thanks in advance for the help in where to find what my mind seeks!!!!
Edit- Before someone asks or states " if you built your own theme why not a dialer?" Simply put, I don't want to!!!! I want a quick pre-made to move about my buisness with!!
1. I keep seeing MIUI roms pop up all over. Could someone explain to me in plain English what exactly it is? From the screenshots I've seen it looks like the iphone...and there are Chinese iphone clones with (an actual) MIUI os out there right? But these roms are android OS modified to look like MIUI, which is a clone of Iphone? am I correct so far?
2. From the posts I've read, it's still buggy as far as GPS amongst other bugs? Also the UI itself has no app drawer and uses the grouping icons on the desktop like IOS? I've played around with the nephews ipod thouch, and it is annoying as hell...you can't just have a nice clean desktop with a few app shortcuts to say cam/mp3/navi and then a button to access the rest of your apps? It's all there in your face with groups of apps/games taking up your whole homescreen? (again unless you download some mod, which has to run in the background taking up resources) ?
If you have used a miui rom I'd love to get some feedback, before I try to flash one...again it seems to me it's trying to clone an iphone, in which case why not just get one?
I wasn't sure about the MIUI ROM's at first. Slowly they started popping up on almost every device. A few friends ran it on their phones and that's what originally got me to flash it. You are correct in that there is no app drawer. Luckily for me I use folders like none other. It was a pain and still is every time I update, but I am patient and take the time. I just make a folder named "apps" and place all my apps in there! BOOM!!! EPIC app drawer action! It really has started to grow on me. I enjoy the ease of customizing all the theme options that's a big plus for me and I never really messed with that too much on other ROM's. Its so simple with MIUI you can't help your self. Its really pretty slick and I have no bugs to report. GPS werks fine for me and that is something I need to werk. Check it out, it might be for you, it might not. Only one way to find out.
Good luck!
I've been a long time follower of XDA forums. In fact although I say this is my first time flashing ROMS that only refers to modern smartphones. I have previously (with the help of XDA forums) flashed a couple of XDA phones and my Sony Ericsson w880i too.
I've recently moved to the Galaxy S3 but before that I was an iPhone user which meant that I used to browse these forums envious of all the amazing things people were doing with their Android phones.
I dont regret moving to Android and the Galaxy S3 is (in my experience) better than any iPhone I've ever had including the new iPhone 5 too.
Now that I've had the s3 for a while and I'm more comfortable with Android, I want to look into flashing a custom ROM or two onto my device before I settle with the ROM that best suits me. So with that in mind I have a few questions that hopefully you can answer for me.
1) Backups. I have downloaded lots of apps, I have several hundred contacts, I have lots of SMS messages that I dont want to lose, I dont want to lose my calendar entries or my music customisations. Some of you posters here seem to flash different ROMs to your phone every day/week so I'm guessing you will be able to tell me which is the best way to backup my information and restore it safely and quickly.
2. Suitable ROM. I know that there is no such thing as the best ROM for everyone but certain ROMs will be more suitable for me than others. What I'm looking for is quality audio for calls, built-in reliable call recording of both sides (I do phone interviews), the best music audio, light build, fast response and long battery life. I'd also like a ROM which is fully compatible with all the phones features. I dont want to waste my time with ROMS where the WiFI, camera, 3G, bluetooth or other features dont work properly.
3. Hacks/Mods. I cant seem to find a list of the most popular (and reliable) hacks and mods avaialble for the Galaxy s3. I've heard there are some great ones for the camera and the audio drivers but I haven't found any place where they are listed together. So if it exists could you point me to it and if not then could you share your favourite hacks with me please.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions and hopefully (after my long iPhone exile) I can start benefitting from the wonderful world of flashing ROMS too!
1 - Titanium Backup PRO is the only way to go, i also recommend Lookout Mobile security
2- I use AOSP ROM's as most of the bloatware is gone and they are far more advanced than Samsung based ROM's but from what im looking you want i think you would be better off with a ROM like Android Revolution, Dragon ROM or Omega, again there are dozens of ROM's to choose from i recommend you take some time out to check their different features.
3- As above take some time to search the S3 forums there are many brilliant mods and hacks to be got.
I was hoping for a few more responses and suggestions. I like the features of the MIUI rom but I dont like the iOS look.
1. Backups:
I would go as well with Titanium Backup Pro for Apps & Data (non system)
For contacts & calendar just use gmail to sync them. This will automatically restore your contacts & calendar entries once you flashed a different ROM.
For music customization as well as SMS I am not sure, but there are at least solutions for SMS backups
2. ROM:
I am using Stock JB Rom (latest french version). Works pretty well so far and had no need to go custom ROM yet.
3. Mods:
The only additional things I install after flashing a new ROM are the extended power menu (as it is not included in stock ROMs obviously) and Syiah kernel (also includes some Audio tweaks in sTweaks) & config files for better battery life
Hope it helps you
Hi all,
This isn't a "stir the pot" kind of question and I don't intend to start a "why root?" discussion... I've read as many other threads as possible and I'm just not clear on a few things. In a current "why do you want to root?" thread, many responded that they rooted so they could remove bloat ware, use wifi tethering, etc. Those are all the things I want, but I'm not sure how far I need to go to get those. Will I need to flash a custom ROM or can I do what I want now?
So, here's what I've got and what I hope to get:
I bought I DNA from a guy who wanted to "upgrade" to an iPhone 5. It did not have the 2.0 software update, so I was able to unlock it, S-OFF, and root it. I can use the SDK and adb, but primarily to follow instructions. Beyond that, I don't really know what I can do now. I had Cyanogen on my trusty old Nexus 1 and on my Xoom tablet, so I'm not afraid of custom ROMs. But, I have to say that I'm pretty pleased with the stock DNA ROM. Except for a few things...
1) What I would like is to get rid of the silly games which I won't use. I don't know enough to know if I can, with the stock ROM but root access, remove those. There's no uninstall option, but perhaps there's a way to remove those with root access? Or would I need to flash a custom ROM?
2) Remove the "entitlement check" on the wifi hotspot app. Since I'm running on T-Mo the app won't, of course, allow activation of the hotspot. Silly... I've read several threads on using SQLite to do this, but they're from last year and either the process has changed or it no longer works. I have read that I can use another app, which is an option. But if there's a way to run the stock app, I'd go for that.
So, you can see I don't really want to change much. If I can do these now, with what access I've got, please let me know (and how, please!). If I need a custom ROM, I see three options it seems. CM (which I've always liked, but seems not yet ready for DNA??), Viper and Hatka seem to be the options which are popular. I'm open to guidance here. Not a "this is the best ROM argument", but which would you recommend for my minimalist needs?
EDIT - I mentioned "three options" above, but that was just based on my reading in the past two weeks. I see there's a new M7 rom and that thread already has over 100 pages in about a week, so it looks like a popular option as well. Apologies if I missed somebody's work and I'm open to any pointers and experiences.
Thanks in advance,

I guess if you know the name of the apk of the games, you can use root explorer to remove them from /system/apps but keep in mind we do not know what else it may break and then you may have to ruu back.
if you want to try a rom, try the sense 5 port by newtoroot
To remove some of the user / system apps like twitter or picas, i search 'root uninstaller' in the apps store, and the one with a green trash can has been quite reliable for me ^^
I personally like the minimalistic touch to the M7 / Sense 5 Rom. Easy to get my news, use gps, play music WITH beats on bluetooth/speaker, etc. But stock is really good to, no complaints there.
Thanks and an update - I ended up flashing the M7 and, like you said, it's nice. And an unexpected bonus is that the included wifi hotspot app works just fine with my T-Mo service, without any modifications at all.
I've got everything I wanted and it was easy, once I made the choice.
