Conditional Rotation based on app? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
is it possible to specify which apps are allowed to rotate the screen and which aren't. essentially creating a black list/white list of apps that can rotate.
is there an app that can do this?

Tasker can do it.
If you use it just for that it's probably a bit expensive but just try the one week trail. You might find more things to like about it.

i'll answer my own question: Smart Auto-Rotate.
using it now, works great.

+1 for Tasker, does nearly anything imagineable. Most powerful app in Android.

Different homescreen layouts for portrait/landscape?

At the moment I'm using LauncherPro, but I don't remember seeing an option for this in any other launchers.
It would be nice if we could specify different widget layouts for landscape/portrait, and if possible different grid sizes. Widgets never behave well when switching between orientations.
No idea if this is possible, but it could be handy.
That would be real nice. I have that same thing on mine when switching back and forth. I am not sure that would be possible either, but wouldn't bet against these guys here that it couldn't be. They do some really amazing stuff..
+1
I think I was able to do this with spb mobile shell on my win 6.5 Ph...
In retrospect, switching layouts is a hacky solution. None of the current phone-based launchers feel right on a tablet. VTL is decent but it still has the same core problem.
They're functional of course, and with 3.x and onwards it might be less of an issue. A completely unique launcher would probably be required to have a "desktop" that felt native to the form factor.
For the time being the best solution is probably just to lock to a single orientation. Moving away from the widget/grid system completely would be nice, but I'm not sure how much could be done within the current android framework.
Sweeter Home 2 does this. I've been using it for a while in the past for exactly this reason and just gave it another try. It's a public beta, so keep that in mind.
It lets you create your very own interface with independent layouts for portrait and landscape. It takes some time to get used to its complex edit mode but once you've figured it out, you can do some pretty neat stuff with it. Also, it syncs with an online database to automatically sort your apps in different categories
Sadly, there's no support for scrolling widgets. It's also pretty resource-heavy, so it gets killed pretty often and eats some battery. This can be improved by disabling automatic syncing, though.
Here are some screens of my setup. I can upload it as a theme if anyone wants to try it (Dunno if the theme thingy works as intended, though. Haven't tried it)
Hey looks nice. I'll be keeping an eye on that.

Question about creating custom Launcher

OK I am considering making a custom launcher as every single launcher does that I am not terribly big on more on that in a moment.
Now before people say, since this will be my first app of sorts, "Start small" or "Don't jump straight into making a launcher" I'm not. I am fiddling with making various simple things and I am working my way up.
Now that that's out of the way back to my focus...
The single thing I don't like about what launcher are doing are the fact they stretch the CRAP out of widgets when switching between landscape and portrait depending on where you set it up first. I have a 7in tablet so it has a larger screen than a phone so it stretches widgets a good deal.
Now before I start this endeavor of creating a launcher that effectively rotates widgets well and doesn't stretch them is this possible? Or is Android built in a manner that doesn't allow this?
Also if this is in the wrong place my apologies and feel free to move it to it's correct place.

It would be possible, but it would be very hard for someone inexperienced like you to make a launcher that does that.

Well damn... But seriously the fact widgets get so stretched is my only pet peeve about this tablet. I keep it locked in landscape to alleviate this but in the end it's inconvenient...
I talked to the ADW launcher dev and he said he has various things planned to help with the stretching widgets problem but that was over 2 months ago...
If you have to ask, then you probably shouldn't be creating launchers...

[Q] Please help me Palm Pre my app drawer

One of the main things I've been missing since I made the switch from WebOS to android is that every launcher that I've found all of my apps are organized alphabetically. On the Palm pre you had multiple scrollable pages and you could organize your apps. All of your games on one, work on another, settings and utilities on another.
Does anyone know of a launcher or a way to make this possible? I made finding the right app so much quicker instead of scrolling through the alphabet or physically typing in to search for the app.
Any ideas or suggestions? Any other WebOS devotees feel me on this?

Not sure other than making app folders on your homescreen.

This is hard to put into words, so I apologize if my thoughts don't come out logically here...
I think that organizing your apps by type, like clusters of games and utilities, is what you use your homescreens for. The whole point of the app drawer is to organize them alphabetically. In my mind, if you could organize your app drawer by app type, your home screens and your app drawer would look almost identical. I'm not sure what the purpose of the app drawer would be.
I'm not sure if that made sense, but it does in my head, haha.

Dan, brilliant explanation and I agree with your point.
OP, using folders is all I can think of for you, as was already mentioned.

There's a way to add tabs to the bottom where you see All, Frequent & Downloads. I don't remember the exact syntax for it but if you find a custom ROM that has it just open their '/system/customize/MNS/default.xml' file and search for the name of their extra tab. Then just edit your ROM likewise to add the tabs you want
I'm aware of both methods, I've found having as many icons as I would like on the homescreen tends to bog it down a little bit. Obviously the necessities are on the homescreens but I HATE the app drawer. On the Pre you could organize them just like widgets. Hold it down, move it where you want and it moves all the others for you.
The alphabetical just drives me nuts. I was hoping there was a launcher that had this option to just drap and drop apps wherever I want them in the app drawer. Open app drawer and theres the main, essential apps. Next page, some of my favorite games, next page all my bookmarks.
WebOS really was a great OS, it certainly did multitasking leaps and bounds better than my EVO4gLTE with 4 times the ram...no apps equals game over though.

Thanks Scott, I'm glad that made some sense, haha. In my head it made sense, and then as I started to type it I was like, "uh oh, this isn't going well..." I hate that feeling of being unable to communicate what is in my brain.

[Q] Custom Home Screen Widgets

I want to be able to add custom home screen widgets (the screens to the right of the clock with a maximum of ONLY 5). I have searched around only to say it isn't possible without any further explanation; however, would rooting the device make it possible, in some way, to achieve my request?
I can't be the only one that would like to have this ability or is this simply a ridiculous request?
that's a million dollar question, bumping it up
Closest thing I have seen so far is a $1.99 app called Wearable Widgets. It's OK, but you also need to download wearable Widgets clock app as well (free). You can find it under your gear manager get applications, search. I added a photo of the two.
It's OK as I said, little clunky and seems to refresh flicker upon watch wake up. Overall I'd say 5/10 stars.

Might be a stupid question..but
Does CM Launcher not work in landscape mode? It's not rotating and no setting for it. Can't imagine it doesn't in 2018..
What am I missing here?

Samsung calls this a feature of not allowing wallpapers to rotate. Only icons, app drawer, apps, and such rotates. I use Ultimate Rotation Control to assist with rotating icons, app drawer, apps, and such. Yet won't rotate wallpaper, due to Samsung feature of no wallpaper rotation.
I talked to Samsung reps on this. That is when I found out that this is a Samsung feature since Android Oreo. No further information at this point if they are going to change that feature to allow wallpaper to rotate.
I know that this doesn't seem logical.
Sorry.
PS - I am using Nova Launcher.

Thanks for the reply..
Is CM Launcher support DEAD along with so many others?
Trying to finalize on a launcher, before spending a lot of time configuring organizing, etc..Don't want to use a dead(no longer supported launcher for obvious reasons.) Currently using Next launcher and that is now also dead.
Landscape mode and wallpaper rotation works fine in 90% of the launchers including TSF Launcher, I believe CM Launcher's company bought out. Why wouldn't CM Launcher be able to?
I am all about "Eye-Candy" and 3D effects in a launcher. (I know many want more lighter/efficient) TSF Launcher was one of the best.. however the company was bought out and it turned into CM launcher.
So first question, since so many "Eye-Candy" launchers have been dropped or no longer supported.
Is CM Launcher still alive?
Another question is why couldn't CM Launcher use the dead TSF launchers 3D effect ass-on's ?
It's just sad, TSF launcher had so much potential...to bad they got kicked out of the competition Home Launcher game.
Starting with Android Oreo Samsung has changed so that your wallpapers don't rotate in Note 8 (at least without some kind of modification that I don't know of).
That said:
I don't use 3D interfaces on mobile devices since SPB launcher for Windows Mobile 6.x.So I wouldn't know your answer outside of what Samsung reps told me.
Since 3D interfaces are so much different from Google's material design I believe caused the popularity of 3D interfaces to wane on Android. There has been design movement away from "3D" design for awhile now. You see that in iOS, Macs, Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Android. Neat as 3D interfaces are, they get in the way from the focus of what these tools are designed for. It is like word processing in VR 3D. Maybe in the future 3D interface designs will get better in not be so distracting from the work at hand for many people. As well as views and tastes will change in the future.
