Hello all - this is a great resource for new PPC phone users like me and thanks in advance for all that I have been able to learn here in the past few days. I do have a question for those "in the know" though. I have heard rumors, seen the VZW powerpoint presentation on Engadget, etc. concerning the update to WM6.1, Rev A, and activating the GPS chip on the VX6800. Seems though it's overdue given the late May 08 date indicated on Engadget. I want to start customizing the interface on my phone but don't want to have to find that what I do now is not compatible with 6.1. Also, I know that I could update now using a custom rom but if an official one is coming out, I would rather wait.
So, the question is if VZW is ever going to update the VX6800 and if so, will it be within the next month or so? I know this question probably is not answerable with an certainity but I will be happy for those that have been on the "scene" longer than I have to speculate. If it appears that an update is not immenient or coming at all, I will just go the custom rom route.
Thanks,
Les

Just take the plunge.... Verizon is always very late to market with updates to their phones..... If they even update it at all.... Your phone can be updated to the official ROM if it ever does come out....

I have been on and off the phone with HTC, UTStarcom, and Verizon for the past 3 months regarding this issue. At first, Verizon kept saying they knew nothing about an update or if there was going to be an update. Both HTC and UTStarcom informed me there was an update coming and it should be here by end of Q2. Finally, 2 weeks ago, I spoke with a WDTS tech from Verizon, who confirmed that there was indeed an update and it would be out by the end of Q2. He said it was going to update to RevA and VZNavigator (GPS). He said nothing about 6.1. This was the first time someone from Verizon knew anything about an update, nevermind when it was going to be released. It is the end of Q2, and still nothing. So I don't know what to tell you.
THAT BEING SAID....
I strongly recommend using a custom rom regardless whether an update is released or not. I am hoping they release an update merely for the fact that with an update brings new drivers, new OEM packages, new radio etc. that can be taken and applied to a custom rom. Custom roms are 99% of the time better than stock roms. My advice to you would be to update now to the latest rom/radio. If a VZW update comes out, you know we'll be on it like flies on **** and ready to apply all the goodies from it to a new custom rom.
GC
New ROM will be nice to potentially get Verizon aGPS settings as well.. vznavigator gets locks INSTANTLY so it will be interesting to see how they implement this on the wm devices... I know they already have it released for the palm so it's possible this may be causing the delay...
The short answer is... NO.
Verizon is very unlikely to ever release a ROM update for the XV6800.
The stores are already pushing the XV6900 over the Titan, and with the upcoming release of the Samsung i770, and Treo 800, it's entirely possible this phone wont be available much longer. In fact, my local store in Santa Monica, CA does not even have the XV6800 on display anymore.

This is not accurate information. Just because another phone model comes out does not necessarily mean all support is stopped for a previous one. The Apache was finally issued an update even though it was "outdated" as you're referring to. Like I said, I've spoken with several people in high positions from all 3 companies...not just dumbass customer service reps. The Vogue is a completely different phone than the Titan and just because it's been released after, and salespeople are trying to "push" it does not mean the Titan is obsolete. The Titan will be "outdated" when the Herman is released.
If you're going to post, provide solid factual proof and not just stipulation.
GC... you're right, I should have made it more clear thats my opinion, not a fact.
But your point about the update for the XV6700 is also important, because it took them SO long to release that update, it was pretty irrelevant to a lot of people by the time it came out. Granted, its better than nothing, but I was more generalizing about the fact that Verizon has historically had pretty crappy support for their phones after release. Whereas other carriers continue to update their existing product line with new firmware, software and other updates, Verizon tries to push a brand new phone on their customers instead.
And of course, I 100% agree with going the custom ROM route. Even if Verizon did issue a brand new ROM today, I would probably wait a few days, let DCD / no2chem, etc.. work their magic and make tons of improvements, and go with their product over whatever Verizon does.

Oh, I completely agree with you that Verizon is at the bottom of the list when it comes to supporting their products. There's no excuse for it. Sprint is coming up on two substantial rom updates, and Verizon hasn't provided its customers with anything. You can all be assured though that as long as I'm still breathing, I am not going to stop bugging them about it. Even if it does nothing, their people will have to put up with me annoying them about it every week until the Herman is released.
September?
I spoke with a Verizon Wireless Rep out in Boston, MA who said that in September an upgrade for the XV6800 would come out with VZNavigator in it. Everyone knows how this speculation works though....we can only hope.

Hehe..must have been the same guy I talk to
I posted in the wrong thread, so since I'm already here I'll comment.
Even though Verizon is always way late to the party on devices, its not unusual for them to release one update during the life of the device. Even the samsung i730, which was an orphan from almost day one, received an official update from WM2003se to WM5, about a year after release. So that's my guess, the end of the year for a software/os update, unless the geniuses decide that pocket pc users will, for some reason, pay for navigation. Then you might see it earlier.
IMO, despite the criticism of Verizon, its not fair to compare to Sprint, since they rushed out the Mogul, and took a ton of complaints on how poorly it functioned. They were forced to put out the first update. So as far as I'm concerned, its only one real update that's come out. The xv6800 worked much better out of the box.

Couldn't find that anywhere; googling HTC Herman brings up an expired craigslist listing for a Wing he erroneously calls the HTC Herman.
I am disappointed by a few things on the Touch Pro (biggest is the roller, battery, processor, there was something else I've forgotten), but the RAM and sleek look (VGA), are really tempting.

The Victor will probably be my next phone. 4GB internal, 196MB RAM, 3D graphics processor, HSDPA broadband internet collection, 3.2 mp auto-focus camera. Still will miss the roller on the side, but it doesn't seem any of the new models will have that anymore. Oh well.

True... may never happen, but would be nice to have if they start taking care of their business customers.
Do you guys ever think about changing to Sprint or other company? For my area, coverage sux bad for other providers. If they paid for your changeover charge would you switch?

HSDPA is GSM 3.5G data. Verizon is CDMA. You will never see HSDPA with Verizon. In the future, they're going LTE like AT&T, but you will never see HSDPA.

Just read into it, the Tmo/ATT versions, according to another XDA post do not work on VZW.
Ah, if only the S4 had root. If this keeps happening, I definitely need to find another phone for VZW that's been unlocked/rooted.

This might worked for me when I was having issues with my SIM. Take the SIM and and use an eraser to lightly rub off the wax that's on the metal part of the SIM. I did that and have had no issues since. Hope that helps. Also, those work work because they're specifically gsm models. U need the one directly from HTC to get it to work on Verizon.

I ended up putting tape on the back of the sim to make it thicker. Almost taped it down, but that could cause problems. I just hate to keep removing my otterbox to replace the sim, it's getting loose because of it. Tempted to just go into VZW and make a big deal with the fact that I went through 3 of them even though I didn't and get them to give me the S4. Not sure if it would ever work. And either way, I'd have to wait until the S4 gains root.

FYI the S4 has root/unlocked bootloader. However the release of said exploit has been delayed until Verizon's S4 has had a chance to get out to customers to allow everyone a chance to utilize the exploit before it gets packed much like the scenario we (DNA owners) are experiencing.

Any of the Galaxy s4? They will be fully unlocked (for a short time at minimum) and unless the carriers locked them down they should stay that way. Or do you mean the DNA become fully unlocked?
I do (have done for nearly 10 years) Microsoft .NET development, but have little experience with Android development. However based upon what I've heard it at this time it seems unlikely that there will be an unlock (outside of JTAG/Riffbox based) at all. I don't mean to be pessimistic but it looks like quite a challenge that the devs are facing. Being a DNA owner I hope that I am mistaken as I quite dislike not having root

Hmm, what on earth is with the carriers locking them down? It's not like they ACTUALLY lose anything by having them unlocked.
As for the HTC One on VZW. I checked with HTC. The only bands that don't match up are the 3G bands. Then again, does VZW even have GSM bands for 2g? I just compared the bands to the DNA.

VZW uses a different LTE band than T-Mobile or AT&T. Also VZW doesn't use any GSM they are a CDMA carrier. This is why when connected to 3G you can't make use data while making a voice call (CDMA limitation). When connected to 3G your normally connected EVDO (i think) for data and CDMA for voice. The bands differ when falling back to 2g/1g but they are still CDMA.
Generally the reason (supposedly) the carrier locks the bootloader etc down is that it increases the ability/likelihood that a user will brick or otherwise damage the phone. This generates increased costs for the carrier with warranty work/returns. Also there is the potential there for a user to load something that has malicious code on their phone which could possibly cause damage to the carriers network etc.
If you really want an unlocked phone and don't mind paying the full price developer versions of most phones are available. They are fully unlocked, and for example you can get a dev HTC one with 64gb memory for 650$. However it is not compatible with VZW if I remember correctly.

I'm going to get either an s4 or a s4 Mega depending on the features it brings. HTC one has too small screen size. Haven't ordered JTAG because almost everyone I see that has had that done has at least a broken tab on the case from prying it open/close. That kind of stuff bugs me to no end, and I'm going crazy without root access. So my time with the DNA is probably going to end in the next month or so.

I'll buy the s4 outright for the 650 or so. Then sell the DNA on craigslist or swappa and hopefully get around 400$. If your at the 6 month mark your not getting them to trade it out. Your other option is to look for someone selling an s4 on craigslist that can't afford it or needs the money.

No matter how we do it, it's a lot of money. Worse to worse. Buy S4, play with it, hate it, resell it.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why the Google version is the same as the AT&T Version - missing the 1700 band. This makes no sense.
I know, T-Mobile is "refarming" (we love that word) their network to use 1900 or whatever, but fact is, the 1700 band is a necessary thing for the distant future.
The T-Mobile version is the only Pentaband One available. Carrier unlock it for $10, then flash the AOSP build and you are good to go. If the rumors of HTC letting all One owners put AOSP on their One, this even sweetens the deal since you don't have to deal with unlocking bootloaders and flashing stuff. I'd assume if they announce an AOSP option for the One, there will be a straightforward way to flash safely for the average Joe.
Paying $599 for a non-Pentaband One is a silly idea. Get the true Pentaband version - the T-Mobile hardware. It's so strange that Google didn't opt to utilize the T-Mobile hardware for it's Play/One offering. Very strange, IMO.
Yeah pretty much most of us will just unlock the bootloader and flash the asop rom

I wish I had read this post before I bought my Google Play edition of the one.
I've spent a couple hours on the phone the other day with t-mobile support and Google support trying to figure out why my new one couldn't connect to anything better than the edge network. Neither of those companies new the right answer. It took me reading these forums before I figured out it was because the Google Play edition didn't have the right antennas inside. The next day I went to T Mobile and bought the T Mobile version and I am now in the process of returning the Google Play edition.

I almost sprung for the GEOne, but ultimately chose to go through T-Mobile so I could spread out the cost of the phone and it's 20 bucks cheaper.
Didn't even think to check the supported bands, glad I made the decision I did.
Though, I kind of wish the GEOne was pentaband and I would have bought it, because I like the idea of the Google Edition flagship phones... If the program doesn't sell many phones I'm not so sure Google will continue it.

Glad I helped others. In all actuality, the T-Mo One isn't "Pentaband" (missing 900 mHz I believe) but it has the necessary bands for the US. If you live in Europe, it may not have the correct bands, but I use ATT/TMo on mine just fine.
Sorry for a noob question.
I have the T-Mobile HTC One fully stock. Would love to go to the Google Edition ROM. Could someone point me to the direction of how I go about doing that?
Do I need to unlock the bootloader and root to flash the rom?
Thanks
Thank you for this thread. I've been reading for a few days now, and this was the final straw on me deciding where to purchase. See you guys in a few weeks.
The Cincinnati Bell version is also the same as the Tmobile version minus bloatware and branding.
This also goes for the Dev Edition.
I ended up selling my Dev Edition 64GB on Swappa for 520 and then bought a TMobile one off of Craigslist for 420.
On the Dev version my phone jumped from Edge to LTE and LTE being rare around here and on this TMobile one I get 4G because of the missing band.

I agree. This is terrible for consumers, and mystifying why Google would do it. It would be bad anyway, but many (perhaps most) people wouldn't even realize it from looking at Google's page about the phone. It blithely glosses over the issue with statements like "Freedom of choice....Unlocked means world travel is easy....Compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile in the US." I had looked at the page and didn't realize it had this limitation until I saw it mentioned elsewhere on the internet. I'd be pissed if I bought one of these and then found out it's handicapped like this.

The T-Mobile HTC One is the best version with all the bands and you can FULLY CONVERT IT to be either a Developers edition or Google Edition.
I converted my T-Mobile HTC One to both Dev edition and Google Edition just to see if it was possible, and yes it is.

In all actuality, the T-Mo One isn't "Pentaband" (missing 900 mHz I believe) but it has the necessary bands for the US.

Maybe that's a whole other WTF for such a new, expensive phone, but the even bigger one is the Google Play edition not supporting the bands needed for T-Mobile, and furthermore the page saying:
Compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile in the US.

Probably mostly because they don't know better. I didn't when I started looking at the phone. The Google Play page certainly doesn't say anything in plain English about the issue, and implies that it is a good choice for T-Mobile. It's a huge WTF that they would sell an unlocked phone missing a major component of functionality on one of two major US GSM carriers, when there's a version of the phone that includes that component. You'd have to be pretty well informed about the technology to be able to recognize the problem from that page, and you'd have to scrutinize the relevant specs to notice it.

thanks for that info. guess ill pass for now =(.
Hi together, i just noticed that the "non-verizon branded" Version of our ADR6410 seems to be available in the wild (-> on ebay.com) ... that seems to still have the identical specs as the verizon version and NOT the down-spec'ed like that "desire vc".
appologies for just snapping the pics from an ebay-offer, but it's just to show it to you for reference! HTC logo instead of our "verizon-mark". no idea about roms or unlocks for that modified ADR6410-LRA (from my side) of course. :fingers-crossed:
according to the seller:
As you see - the unit is a "6410LRA". The "LRA" stands for "LTE Across Rural America." This was ORIGINALLY a Verizon product but it was passed on to smaller regional carriers. This unit WILL NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT work on the Verizon (or Sprint) Network - NOT! You WILL need a SIM Card from one of the Regional networks to use this phone (SIM Card NOT Included) and even then we make NO guarantees of this phone being able to work on any Carrier. There are some carriers this MIGHT work on but we don't know which ones. When a Unit is Powered Up NO Carrier logo comes on the screen.

i'm just not sure if the unluck (root etc) would work the same way. alas, not much to worry about it for myself ... since i already have my Dinc4G and here in Europe you can't buy them (regularily anyhow). was just wondering ^^
very disappointed with this phone
HTC has been disappointing me HARD as of late..
Not sure if switching back over was the right move, Samsung was great, except when they locked the s4 bootloader and there is $5,000 bounty not being claimed yet, so i doubt itll come, id rather dump this if no S-OFF and get the s4 dev edition..
I have one of these, and purchased it at an independent cell company here in east KY. So far it seems to be a good phone. Signal is good, and has all the specs I need for my use. Battery life is excellent I've been one of AT&T's faithful since the Cingular days back in the early 90's. However, just to be blunt, AT&T coverage has dropped by at least 50% over the past 5 years - hence my reason to take a stab at App Wireless App Wireless is locally owned, and actually is the oldest provider in this area. The only issue is they are somewhat higher in rates, and initial cost is higher. With that being said......
I'd love to make the switch. I still have a few months under contract with AT&T, but would be willing to pay the ETF fee. Even though App Wireless is higher in pricing, the coverage more than makes up for it. I'd much rather pay $70 for 95% coverage as to pay $50 for 50% coverage
I really need to get this thing rooted Basically just to install programs on an ext4. It surprised me as to the programs that will install to the external SD card automatically, but there are just those few that won't. Searching the forums I can't find a definitive answer on this phone. I have found where its been done on the Verizon branded, and the HTC Desire VC, plus... even the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE.
I've searched this and other forums - is there ANYWHERE posted that this phone has successfully been rooted?
Just wanted to let everyone know that I decided to be a "rabbit", and take a chance on my new HTC Desire 4G LTE - at least that's what the independent carrier calls it. It is similar to the HTC Desire VC they offer, but the specs are closer to the HTC Droid Incredible 4g LTE.
Anyway, whenever I plugged it into a program of sorts, it recognized it as the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE. The big difference being the Hinc is a model from Verizon, ADR6410VZW. Mine is a ADR6410LTA.
All of the other specs are identical with the exception of the CID. The Verizon is a VZW__001 that mosts posts say to SuperCID it to 11111111 to root, but the ADR6410LRA is a UTSI_005. Therefore a lot of the steps are not needed.
As of right now, my bootloader is unlocked, and the phone is rooted, and everything is working fine. I also installed TWRP. So....for those that have the LRA version instead of the Verizon, everything here applies and will work fine.
Thought this may help a few.
Evening everyone. Just thought I would share an article I found over on Droid Life today.
http://www.droid-life.com/2014/08/07/moto-x-bootloader-unlock-qualcomm/
While there is no specific mention of the G3 (only G2), this is an intriguing bit of news. Dan Rosenberg has pulled some outlandishly amazing stuff in the past, so if he says this a vulnerability that affects all Snapdragon processors, I believe him. The S5 and M8 may have been patched already, but I have a feeling that if we keep our devices from updating, this could be something that works for us.
Food for thought, people.

This won't work for us, Samsung and LG can't be unlocked through trustzone
Really? That's rather troublesome. What is the discrepancy with those two?

I personally don't have experience in unlocking bootloaders, want to but not yet so I couldn't tell ya
Ah. That is certainly a shame. Well, here's to hoping that the other methods in the works come to fruition.
I'm in the same boat as you though. Eventually I plan on getting into the development side of things. But Security+ and CCNA certifications are my current focus.

Yeah, I have experience in custom kernels and roms, also other minor projects unrelated to phones
It seems like almost everyday theres new information on the progress of the bootloaders for the g3 but not all of it seems to be pointed out on xda
If you want really good news, read the last few pages of the bootloader unlock thread for the AT&T G3. Should also work for Verizon.

The LG official unlock?
I signed the thing but I doubt it will happen anytime soon
I don't think the official unlock will be done anytime soon. I just like that those guys are working hard at it and seem pretty confident that they will be able to get all variants unlocked with their method they are developing. It will be a while, but I'm thinking it's very possible still have it before the new year.
I believe the "official" unlock may happen in time. It wouldn't surprise me in the least bit if LG adopted the same practices as HTC in that regard. With that said, it's not something Verizon will ever allow on their devices. In the past, we may have gotten lucky. Now, we only have that option if Verizon and the manufacturers offer us a "Developer" or Google Experience edition. Personal advice would be to lock down your phone via Titanium Backup concerning OTAs, regardless of how enticing they may be, and wait for the Dev community to release their method.

Apparantly you didnt have a m8.
*shakes head* Did HTC actually release the S-Off method for Verizon devices? Thought it got unlocked by devs via firewater because when S-Off was first released by HTC for the M8 the Verizon version was not included.

Verizon was not included. You either must use the exploit of find someone with a USB S-Off service card.
Verizon probably won't even let the official unlock work as it'll "mess up the network". Oh FFS.
Verizon just plain sucks as far as these things go...they lock everything down, then also they don't even want us having any Nexus devices. But it's OK you can pay around $650 with tax for a Dev S5 or something that you have to get from Samsung lol
Ridiculous

Agreed. If I was in a part of the country with better coverage from the other providers, I would have sold my unlimited line and jumped ship a long time ago. But alas, only AT&T has decent coverage outside of cities in SC besides Verizon, and their coverage drops significantly if you veer off an interstate onto a back highway surrounded by countryside around here. So Verizon it is.

Could not possibly agree any more...I wished VZW weren't so locked down on everything. I'm in the exact same situation here in NE. AT&T's the only one who's even close coverage-wise, and really they aren't. So yep, our choices out here include Verizon, Verizon, ooorrrrrr...Verizon! :silly:
Emailed LG about a bootloader unlock since there rumors floating. LG's response was that I'd have to get it from Big Red. Fat chance of that happening.
