[Q] Does Unlocking a SGS II works successfully - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone actually tried this guide to unlock a SGS II to work with any GSM mobile operator's SIM worldwide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1064978
I am a novice to Andriod world, however I am planning to buy a SGS II. If the method above does really work , then I might have the possibilty of buying an operator locked handset to be unlocked laters for usage with my operator.
It is a request to make more detailed sticky for a final and tested step-wise guide for this unlocking procedure for the benefit of the community.
Thanks.
Regards.

What is apk and how can it work. Is it to be run on the PC or the phone. What is the way of installing it.
Thanks.

Ups, sorry for not being clear enough...
An apk is an android installable file.
In the following thread you will find a link to the apk itself (for manual install) and a link to the android market for automated install.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092451
The only downside is that this app needs root to extract the unlock code. To root your device you need to follow the instructions on this other thread:

Thanks,
So theoretically if i gain root access to the phone and run the attached APK file , it will possibly find out the unlock code for the mobile.
This unlock code would be SIM dependent (depending on which service provider's SIM i have inserted) or the handset specific, meaning that once the handset is unlocked it would accept virtually any service provider's SIM worldwide.
Thanks for the information.

The code is device specific, and will block any sim not being from your provider.
If you gain root access ,which is pretty straightforward with the guides available here in the forum and run that app you will get your unlock code.
Depending on the carrier you may even get an unlocked device. O2 seems to be giving both locked and unlocked phones.
Cheers!

From the above statement, I am a bit confused. Does it mean it will not block any SIM from any service provider.
I intend to buy a locked set from UK (which is usually when you buy a handset with contract) and unlock it to use elsewhere in world. The reason is obvious cost benefit which you get when buying a set with contract.
Is it possible via using this method.
Thanks.

What I wanted to say is that the unlock code does only depend on the device, not on the sim card you insert into the phone.
The sim lock, which that code removes, blocks any sims from providers other than your own.
You will be able to remove the sim lock with that app. The app will give you the unlock code you need.
On top of that, some of the O2 handsets that you buy subsidized are not sim locked (some are, some aren't) so, if you buy the phone from them on contract you may be lucky and get a sim free phone.
Best Regards.

Like wise some PAYG O2 are unlocked .

Alright, guess i would give it a try too.
Just would appreciate if you can guide with the following :
1. Does the phone needs to be in the home network (with the original operator SIM) in order to perform the rooting and install the APK file to get the unlock code.
2. Can we insert any other operator's SIM (which would be locked ofcourse) in the handset which may or may not be in the same country/network and still be able to access the phone main menu or screen to perform the rooting and hence unlocking activity.
3. How to install and run the APK file after rooting the device ( i see there already are other guides about how to perform rooting).
Thanks.

Does this app actually work for unlocking?

I'm a little hesitant to try it since I don't want to brick the phone.

It's difficult to brick a phone with the unlock process because it's not something that can "just be done" to a phone. You generally run an app that gives you an unlock code. You then insert a SIM that shouldn't work, due to SIM locking, and it asks for the code.
This app works...

I thought that if you entered an incorrect unlock code several times that it would screw the phone up, and in the article it mentions that if you run the app more than once it may "freeze" your phone.

Make sure you back your efs up before you try to unlock. Just in case.

Its impossible for Chainfire's APK to brick the phone, it does not make any writes only reads, this is of course the same for my manual method.

If you are rooted running the MIUI ROM and unlock the phone with this app will the phone still be unlocked if you flash a stock ROM back onto the phone?
Thanks

The unlock is permanent, the only way your phone would be re-locked would be by restoring your EFS which was locked.

Steps i have done :
- Root phone.
- Backup EFS with "EFS Pro" (just in case)
- SGS2 SIM unlock code finder
And done ... all operators unlocked.

How to flash firmware on X10a?

What's a known, working procedure for flashing a different firmware on my X10a? Currently it's got an AT&T R2CA016 firmware on it and I want to debrand the phone.
I've went through numerous guides, using the PC Companion and Update Service to replace files, problem is, the software tells me my phone is up to date, additionally there's no "Re-install" button on this software, so using the SE software seems useless.
I also looked at XS++ which couldn't connect to my phone. If anyone has an AT&T phone and has debranded it in the last month, please let me know which procedure you used.
FYI, I've backed up my APN using APN Backup & Restore.
Thanks.

I was stuck on 020 for ages, the old method (replacing the files) no longer works and if it does it complete luck. the method i used to debrand can be found at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683793
download the version for your region, country or whatever. follow the instructions to install the 026 generic firmware and viola its debranded with the latest firmware

Thanks, I'll give it a try later this afternoon. I just reading up on the Omnius method? It seems to rely on decrypted ROMs, which contain "phone.zip" and "android_xxx.zip". Any particular page to start reading the relevant information on? There's a 103 pages in that thread!

Not to familiar with that method i dont think, i didnt read much into though (as i was getting ready for the 2.1 update)
the one i used was easy enough to use, basically click the exe which brings up a command prompt file, connect your phone in flash mode, hit any key and let it do its thing, worked perfectly first time after trying the switch the files method about 12 times

I don't see any firmware links on that page, it's actually on the next page, page 43. A generic X10a R2BA026 firmware is listed there. I might give that a go, either way, SEUS of PC Companion is out in regards to flashing my phone, they won't work.
I was able to debrand the phone by flashing with a generic X10a R2BA026 using EXploid one click guide, however it is still locked to ATT. Anyone knows how to unlock the phone? Thanks.

I'm not bothered if it's locked to AT&T, I just want the AT&T garbage removed from it, I thought rooting would do that, but rooting just gives me super-user access to muck up the phone by deleting crucial system files!
UPDATE: I used the Grospolina method, here. So far so good, at least my phone boots! This method worked fine.

If you're trying to use it on a different GSM network, You can Always go to one of the unlocking companies on the net...They use your IMEI number to unlock the phone.
OTHERWISE, If you're with AT&T, You CAN call customer care, Tell them you're traveling over-seas with your cell phone and you need it to be unlocked to use one of the UK's GSM Sim cards...
That's how I would do it personally

You SHOULD be good to go! Once you Root it with the generic firmware...If not, I'm CONFIDENT you can find someone to help ya on here with reflashing it to AT&T's Stock Firmware. I went through the entire root, rebranded mine (since I was talking about taking it back to AT&T for the Captivate) And have re-rooted it again without a hitch
I followed this guide, as posted by Grospolina, and it worked perfectly, flashing it to a R2BA026 ROM. The root option also worked, and I installed the Market fix. In general, this IS how I want my phone, no AT&T garbage-ware installed. I'm content with this.
I tried other flashing guides, involving SEUS and PC Companion, all of them were a waste of time, due to a) The software kept telling me my phone was "up to date", and b) There was no "re-install" button to re-install the ROM on the phone. I WAS going to try Omnius which I suspect is a "pay-for" option, but this Grospolina guide worked 1st time. Many thanks to you Grospolina!
Now I can be busy re-installing some apps I wanted, and possibly restoring my APN file, I'm unsure if I need to at this point.

I called AT&T and they said that under some policies between AT&T and Manufacturer, they can't release the code. They asked to have the original owner of the phone to call in since I don't have the account with AT&T. I got this phone off Ebay, so I can't have the original owner to call in. I wonder if there is any other way to unlock it, because it is dead to me now since I can't use it under any other network....

[Q] Bought a Bell Atrix from Craigslist and Got "SIM network unlock PIN"

Hi Guys,
I am a bit of a noob with Android flashing and kind of got really confused after reading a few of the guides...so I am looking for some direction....
I bought a Bell Atrix today and they guy said it was unlocked. I entered my sim and it gave me the SIM network unlock PIN prompt. So in the end the guy sold it to me for $20 less to cover me for the unlock code.
At the SIM network unlock PIN prompt if I press dismiss I get to the Emergency Call only screen. So I read the form and by passed it with the Andoid Boot (No BP) method....that is when it got interesting.
When I go to the systems settings now I get the following:
System Version
Version.4.1.42.MB860.Telstra.en.AU
Android Version
2.2.2
Baseband
Unknown
Webtop Version
OSHWT_U1_6.48.0
Kernel
2.6.32.9
Build Number
OLYEM_U4_1.4.2
I went and ordered an unlock code from CellUnlockingCodes.com. I put my order as a Bell Phone.
My question is:
1. Seems like it is flashed with another firmware...will a Bell Unlock Code work on this?
2. Can I flash to another firmware? Should I be flashing AT&T firmware from this forum? or international?
I want to use it with Fido.
Any direction is highly appreciated.
ok just got the unlock code and it worked!!! yey!! but its showing that I am on Rogers and not Fido....anyone know why?
Can someone please also answer my #2 question? Thanks!

First of all, I need you to clear my confusion.
You said originally this phone is a Bell Atrix, you purchased off Craigslist. You have a Fido SIM. As per your first post, it says, "System Version
Version.4.1.42.MB860.Telstra.en.AU", which means, this phone is not Bell Atrix. If you go to your app drawer, do you see stuff offered by Bell?
Ok, moving on to my next question, did you say you have got an unlock code already? Have you been able to make phone calls after inserting your Fido SIM card?
Alright, coming to point, when you asked for UNLOCK Help in your first post, you should know this, SIM Unlock and Bootloader Unlock are two different things. What you did, is SIM Unlock where you unlock your phone so that you can use any other GSM SIM Card. What you will need to do next, is Unlock the Bootloader so that you gain the capability to be able to get rid of whichsoever operating system is on your phone, either Bell or Telstra, or some alien version, and flash something else, which is far better than version 2.2.2 and you gain the option to be able to customize your phone the way you want.
For that, you need to go here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261.
I will strongly recommend, that you do a lots of and lots of and lots of reading before you start with anything, as you yourself mentioned you are a noob, you wouldn't want to hard brick your phone.
Go to Atrix General Section, Q&A Section and Development Section, read as much as you can, try and understand the processes. Until you don't get it, please do not try flashing/unlocking bootloader.
Now, to your other question, why do you see Rogers instead of Fido, may be it is because of the fact that this is not a Bell Phone, and Radio is registering the Actual Cellular Provider vs. The Sub Provider which in your case is Fido. The only thing I can think of is that once you flash something else than the default ROM on your Atrix, you should be able to have the correct information show up on your phone.
Hope this helps. Never be afraid of asking questions, but, please do your research first.
Cheers!!!

No there is nothing related to Bell in the app drawer. However, the reason I am saying its a Bell phone is because:
1. The guy who sold it to me said it was a Bell phone he got on contracts. He also said he used TitanimBackup to root/update the software (this didn't make any sense).
2. I ordered an unlock code and selected Bell as the carrier and the code I got worked to unlock it.
But not sure if that is sufficient proof.

unlock and root
unlock makes your phone usable on other carrier's network. Rooting gives you administrator privilege so that you can for example install "root" only apps etc.
Root the phone so you can backup properly with Titanium Backup. Also to delete cap off your system folder.
Call your carrier and explain you need to unlock your phone because you are going to be traveling out of the country. I have heard that works for getting an unlock code...

Rooting allows complete access to all phone software...allows u to install any rom, kernel, and software that u want as long as its compatible with your phone.
Unlock allows you to use your phone with any cell phone carrier...

[Q] Help unlocking please

So I accidently have locked myself out of my phone by changing my number to another network and thinking I could still use my current SIM in my phone until I got it unlocked.
I haven't been able to send or receive texts or anything for around 3 days now.
The place online I was getting it unlocked at said there was a delay with Samsung so they refunded me.
I tried the unlock apps but they don't work.
In GalaxSim, it says my phone is unlocked by when I try another SIM it doesn't work.
In the FAQ it says this could be a second SIM lock by the service provider, and to fix it I have to flash a full unbranded Samsung ROM.
I was wondering how I do this?
I'm on Cyanogen 10 and I currently have Jellybean on my device but I'm not too sure on what I have to do to flash to this ROM and if it will erase my data?
Thanks for any help!

CM10/jellybean is not a "stock" rom. CM10 is a "AOSP" based rom.
Stock rom refers to your devices/carriers default rom, ie Samsung based rom. Get your needed rom from sammobile.com

If you want to unlock your device use the search there is plenty of topics if you use keywords like "sim unlock" etc.

I didnt say you have to do anything however you may have compatibility issues unlocking sim so would probably best to go back to stock.
Yes, you can go back and forth to any rom you want.
Flash stock rom via odin (download mode)
Flash Siyah kernel (again in download mode)
Reboot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset.
Boot Android and use sim unlock etc.
Reboot into recovery and flash whatever rom you like.
Thanks for that, I went onto that site you mentioned, sammobile.com and I chose to do their unlock method with SRS, it was only 15 euro so I'll see if it fixes it!

2) Read Mobile Odin thread by chainfire:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
3) Flash the downloaded ROM following the guide above.
4) Check if your network still locked, If it is check this thread out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2070375
5) Tell us how you did.
When I try run Mobile Odin it gives me an error about not being able to detect the device. It's not asking for super user privileges either?
your device is not rooted? weren't you in CM 10.1?
What device are you packing? GT-I9100?
I followed everything you said and my phone is still locked. No luck

It was rooted but then I did a root checker and it said it wasn't, must of lost it after changing to CM 10 I think.
I downloaded some auto rooter and that rooted the phone for me. Then I followed your instructions and now I'm freshly formatted but still not working. Tried all the unlocker tools again and still doesn't work. GalaxUnlock says I'm already unlocked so it must be a second network lock.
But in his instructions he says that flashing to a stock Samsung ROM fixes it, but I thought that's what I just done.
sure you don't have an IMEI issue? You did back EFS folder before you flashed for the first time right?
check you IMEI by dialing *#06# and see if it matches the imei number sticked below the battery.

IMEI matches the one that I had before I started trying all this and matches the one behind the battery.
In the Galaxy Unlocker app I backed up the EFS files when it asked me tther than that I haven't touched them really. Any recommendations? I've tryed pretty much everything I have seen.
I'm searching for the network info key-in code, for you to see what's locked and what's not. Can't seem to find it tho.
Do you have another carrier sim card to put in & see if it asks for an unlocking code?

I currently have my Meteor sim card in the phone, that's the company I was with for years.
The phone lets me browse and use apps and stuff when this sim card is in it.
I have another sim card for 48 who I am changing to, which asks for the unlock code.
Before with GalaxSim Unlock, it said I was already unlocked. I downloaded an old version now everything says undefined, and said it can't read the nv data, however I am nearly positive I have backups of this as I saw them on the card.
Galaxy S2 SIM Unlock just gives me an unlock code of 00000000 which doesn't work and Galaxy S Unlock doesn't work either, altough it says it does

Well, now we know that you are indeed locked, thats good.
busybox installed on your device?
if yes, try installing another version (older/newer) once downloaded install it and keep it working in the background, then run the unlocking apps again

or try this:

you could also restore the EFS folder and see what's up.

I have Busybox installed, but I have two versions, BusyBox free and BusyBox installer, don't know if it matters that I have the two of them.
I have went to a much lower version of it but GalaxSim Unlock still says it can't read nv data.
I tried that program also and it says my Video card isn't supported :S
And hit the restore button in Galaxy S 2 Unlock and GS2_Repair so I presume it got restored. Where should the efs folder be located so I can double check?

I also got 2 busybox (free 8.9.7 & installer 4.1).
GalaxSim Unlock should have a restore button, dunno the location of the back up, but the EFS folder should be in the data folder, u'll need a root explorer to get to it.

[Q] JB 4.3 SIM unlocking

Hello, is there are any way to unlock 4.3 firmware? I tried acces service menu, but in 4.3, as I found, it is disabled. I tried edit nv_data.bin file, but this file dosn't have required line in tutorial to edit. Please, don't suggest to call carrier or use online services, because I don't even know to which carrier phone is locked.
I have two ideas, but didn't tried them yet:
1) Installing custom rom like Cyanogen.
2) Downgrade phone from 4.3 to 4.1.1
Is there are any possibilities that these idieas will work, or it will be just waste of time?
1) no
2) will break efs folder
You are wasting your time without an unlock code, carrier is unimportant when buying a code.
