[APP] Waze Free GPS - Atrix 4G Themes and Apps

Just came across this app in the market. The navigation is pretty sweet. Just wanted to bring it up in the forums to make people more aware of it and get it out there.
It has turn by turn nav, (looks pretty similar to google nav), lets people post accidents. Also shows traffic and speed traps.

Its community based so its only good if your city has enough people on waze

Correct, but while that happens, you can help build roads. Its amazing how quickly it grows.
I use it all the time in my city.
Cheers,

I ran it for a few months back when I had my G1, at the time it was pretty buggy, but I was addicted to road munching.

[Q] Open Letter to All Developers (Ads)

Greetings,
This is an open letter to all developers, big, small, whatever. Just a trend I'm seeing with the last few apps installed. Ads in the Notification Bar/Status bar of my phone....NOT COOL!!
You want to put ads in games/aps then sure but not in my status bar. That is an auto-fail and I don't care how pretty (bottle widgets I'm looking at you!!) your app is its just spam to me and I will not support you or buy the paid version.
Anyone else want to second this (third, etc) and send a message to developers be my guest. I love to support the little guy, but not this way, its waaayyy to intrusive.
Steve (WarrGrinn/Deathstalker)
I've yet to see this happen on my phone, but I'd definitely be pissed if it did.

That is definitely going too far but if you like and use an app that has ads, click them it makes a dev happy.
Well I can understand your anger, but let me convince you to have some sympathy for these devs.
Writing code, most of the time, is a tedious job, you need an idea, the skills and then the long testing. And then the worst part, getting your app recognised, even by a small populace of the community, is incredibly hard, seeing as you're pitted against an overwhelming number of "rivals".
Now say no one is to buy your "$2" or only a incredible few buy, you can't even make up for the amount of time in the creation of the app, and then people like you (take no offence please, simply using your mindset as an example) do not view the ads, well that dev is in a bit of crisis now eh?
Just shedding some light and hope you now don't have much of a critical view on ads.
$1 gets you a reply
Ads in general I don't have a problem with....its the delivery method. Imagine your watching a tv show, and instead of a comercial break they suddenly run a 1/3 screen tickertape below your show for ads during the program.....your reaction? Probally not good.
Don't mind ads, even clicked on a few and downloaded apps I wouldn't have known about without them. But in my status bar??!! No thanks, at least give notice in your app where/how the ads are placed or even better a box to check on how you'd like them. I can see some people wanting statusbar ads if they block game content/make it hard to play.....
Other question, does this take up data? Are these statusbar ads eating up my capped 1gig limit/month, if so then even more ticked (or do they count as a sms message?). I can just see some apps being made solely as delivery packages for ads, and thats not cool.
Just my 2c.
They're definitely eating up your data. Check out the permissions of the app when you install it, anything that has ads will require internet. 1 gig though? Owch man. I don't see how you make that work.

1gig, lots of hooking up for usb internet passthru to use the market/update apps.
Only hit 97% use once, mostly 70+ at end of month.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

I understand where you're coming from, it is annoying, especially when you don't know where the ads came from (from which app).
But still, let's cut the dev some slack, he's trying to make a few cents from his hard work (he has some really nice apps)...

[Q] protection apps for evo3d

ok our daughter is going to middle school and we got her an evo 3d (during the amazon .01 sale). I am looking for some app suggestions to lock the phone down to help with porn, etc. similar to norton family protect online.
I am also looking to track via GPS, and playing with Life 360's app which seems pretty cool, but the app tends to close (even though it's set to run in the background).
So as I start this stressful journey, I figured there were some parents out here already doing this (or trying) and could suggest.
Thanks.
invasion of privacy much.
**** if i had a gps tracker on me when i was a kid i woulda lived a very sheltered life. kids need to be able to lie about where there going occasionally don't take all the3 fun out of being a teenager

Lookout is similar to Norton, as far as blocking sites, I'm unsure whether it does that or not. Sprint offers family tracker for a monthly fee, I don't know of any other ones available.
Mobile Security offers parental controls for android. Check it out, free on the market.
twiztidninja - when its your kid, we can talk. If you have already and simply don't care of "never my kid" then that's another issue.
When I was a kid, well if we were lucky enough to get a playboy or something, it was the world. Now a simple mistype on a URL can bring hardcore porn as well as other sick things the internet has to offer and that's something I don't want to expose my 11 year old daughter (not a teenager as you assumed) to. The fact is it's a different and sick world now, and I don't have a problem with her going places, just want to know she is safe as best as I can. As for "kids need to lie", well maybe in your life that's acceptable, but were raising our kids differently. Then again, from your grammer and profanity on a public forum, I can see we already differ on other issues.
Twolazyg - thanks, http://www.mobiflock.com/ seems to be in beta and really looks like a great app and I will check the others as well.

GPS/Traveling Voice App??

Are there any traveleing GPS app's with voice directions out there that will work with the Note?
I believe waze has voice guidance, you might want to give it a try.
Check my thread over here. Free version of Telenav. Works great and its free.
I will try that when I get it. It is to be delivered tomorrow, but I will not be back home until Saturday. My wife will get ignored all weekend while I play with my new toy.
Try Waze. Social fed traffic and variable directions based on real time info and you driving habits. It tried for almost a week to route me around school zones!
+1 for Waze. If everyone were to use it live traffic might get better!

Have you tryed google navigator?
I have. It too has voice directions but there was something. I didn't like about it. Can't remember now. Maybe it had little voice direction. Ill try it again today on my way to work.

So here are my thoughts on Google Navigation beta. The voice is terrible and not changeable. No zoom by speed. Completely mute music while guiding by voice. No setting for direction up (well its there but does 3D). No speedometer. Initial map is zoomed way out.
It is accurate. Built in search. Its free.

I have it...bought it when they dropped the price down to $5 last year for a while. It's not a bad app, gives you directions plus a lot of little things others don't have. The maps are downloaded to your phone so it takes up quite a bit of space. Honestly though, unless you're doing a lot of traveling and need to know where gas stations and banks are, why not just use google maps/navigation? Save the money you'd spend to pay for gas.

New "Twist" App

So there's this really cool new app that I'd like to try called "Twist" in the Play Store, but it is not yet compatible for our phone Here's a link/description for the app itself.
LINK
Description:
Twist is the easiest way to let others know when you're on your way!
Twist is the easiest way to let your family, friends and colleagues know that you're on your way!
Twist also alerts them when you are almost there and if you are running late. Whether you are driving, walking or taking public transit, Twist accurately calculates your arrival time to a specified destination and privately shares your ETA with only those that you choose.
What people are saying:
★ "Twist is a very easy-to-use app with an incredibly relevant purpose." – Wired
★ "Twist is a clever app […] It’s a really cool app for keeping people up to date on your whereabouts distraction-free.” – Mashable
★ “Ever been late for a meeting? Now, finally, there is an app for that." – Inc
Since continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life, Twist utilizes proprietary GPS and cell tower data algorithms to minimize battery drain.
Eliminate the uncertain wait times that often leave people stressed or frustrated with Twist’s simple, social and accurate ETAs. Stop waiting, stop guessing, and start twisting.
(Twist is currently available in US, CA, UK and AU on ice-cream sandwich and above.)

What I would like to know is... I'm mostly certain this app would work 99% if it was side-loaded.. would anyone be able to download this app to a compatible device and share their apk???
Heya, I am one of the engineers working on Twist for Android. I would like to offer you access to our nightly builds which are not restricted by device if you wish to help us test it. Of course, we don't currently test on your device, so it should come with the caveat that your device will probably have some critical issues. If you are interested, PM me even if the app fails horribly, the best way for us to bring support to your device quickly is through your testing.

Need advice on finding a gps tracking app for my elderly parents

I have finally convinced my parents to get rid of their flip phones and get smart phones. I would like to install a gps tracking app on their phones so they will be able to locate each when they are out alone (my father still jogs everyday and my mother takes walks and i want them to be able to find each other if there was an emergency) . I cant imagine my parents remembering to turn on an app before they leave the house so they need to have something running in the background all the time. I am looking for a simple app that is good on battery usage and can show on a map on their phone where the other one is. It doesnt need to work on a web browser, only android. Any help or advice would be appreciated. I would love a xda developed app or open sourced app the best if possible but i would take any suggestion you can give me. Thanks everyone for the help.
