Recommend an app to track data use? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I switched from Rogers to Fido, been getting bye on 500mb/wifi with never a problem... now I been on fido for 6 days and it says I already used 600mb of my 1 gig!?
I am mostly home currently (wifi)... so I have NO idea what is going on. Is there a way to see what and if something is using a lot of data all of a sudden? Or is fido just getting me
Update! So I installed the free version of 3g watchdog.... and ironically enough, it shows that it is incoming data that is HIGH! Oddly high.... but how can I know what exactly it is? It is pretty weird that I have gone all those years using 500mb, and now I have used 1.02gigs in 2 weeks.... I have even stopped things from doing auto/refresh sync etc... and the last couple of days, I had network data off entirely.... because of overages?
thx in advance

I use 3g watchdog to track my data useage. It seems to work pretty well.
That data useage is pretty high!... sure you not acidentally using your phone as a wireless tether?

yea, considering I been home all week... and in the last 2 years, I been able to get by under 500mb a month....
I will try that app, but I really do not think anything on my phone is that active... heh.

Data Nil
I use Quick Settings to turn Mobile Data APN off .
jje

I know this does not make a lot of sense.... and I am not sure what I am expecting, lol.... but I do not see how I can be using this much data.. while NOT doing anything different, barely running background data, not streaming etc....
I updated OP
halp!

You left the wifi counter on in 3g watchdog

it is not watchdog I am using to see total data.... I am going by my fido app.... and that says I am over my 1 gig limit
but thx

Overused data in a day

Hi,
I'm still kinda new to android and settling in with it, but just today I went over 100% of my data plan. I found the message a bit odd as I had a message not too long ago (about 6 hrs ago) saying I was at 65%. I didn't use the data much in the 6 hr time period, I only used the facebook app a few times and I think thats all that I used that would normally use the data plan. or could it be the widgets? I only had beautiful weather widget and super clock on as well as the facebook and youtube widgets. would having performance mode on be the reason as to why I jumped from 65% to 100%?
What data plan do you have?

I had something similar happen with my wife's Atrix. Both mine and hers have the 2gb plan. We use wifi at home and work so we don't push all that much data through at&t.
We went out for dinner last week, away from wifi for about an hour. Not long after we got home, a notification arrived saying her phone had hit 2.7gb!! I had looked at util a few days prior an both were at 20-30mb. The util report on their website said all 2.7gb had been used that day, starting at the time we went out. I used my phone as much as she did, and mine showed a more reasonable 4mb for the day.
To hit that, her phone would have had to be downloading at a sustained 6mbps the whole time we were off wifi. Best speed I have seen through at&t in my area is 2.5mbps.
Customer service opened an investigation, but it will take til the 21st. In the meantime, the overage still shows on my account.

I have the 200 mb data plan (lame right? ) but last I checked on my data usage was the previous night, and I only used up less than 100 mb, and this weekend only I medium usage of navigation for android and did some internet surfing and used youtube outside of the house and without wifi. But today I had barely touched my phone except maybe 2-4 times and at 8 am I found that I used up nearly 30k kb and 77k kb at 10 am
It would be interesting if you could use wifi and put it through a proxy on your home network to see. If it's something in the radio it may not show
Since you're on Wifi at home have you checked your home data usage?
do you guys have any app to monitor your data usage? 3G watchdog can tell you exactly how much data each app is using, maybe something is syncing in the background...but 2gb should be plenty if you are not downloading or streaming videos.
Didn't have a data monitor running before but you bet I have both phones monitored now!
It has to be a monitoring error. All she was doing at the time was web browsing...no video, app installing, etc.

[q] how do people use soooo much data?!

I have been using 3G watchdog to see how much data I am actually using. I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan and at the end of the month (near the end) I have only used 1.5GB! I have been tethering my laptop, my Xbox 360 (netflix and Battlefield), I have also been streaming Pandora and Youtube videos. As well as downloading apps, etc.
I also have auto sync for weather, email, and facebook.
How the heck have people been using up so much data?
Haha, I hear ya. I max out under 2GB each month and I have unlimited as well. I have no idea what other people are doing. Maybe they don't have internet at home. I can see myself easily using way more than that if I'm tethering at home as well.
well I wasnt using wi-fi at home and I had to reinstall apps multiple times(before TiBU) so that was alot of usage right there but to be honest I dont really see a reason to tether the phone with these abysmal speeds
I can see myself going over... when Im not near wifi I download my torrents (this includes movies and gigs of free apk's I find out there) with my 3G and this isn't me tethering lol I just download straight to my phone

Not buying it. You either use WiFi 28 days a month, or you only tethered for 30 seconds a day.
I tethered my laptop to watch a few videos, (under 5 minutes each, maybe 5-10 videos total, SD) instant messengers, and just general browsing, and my xbox to download some DLC. 8GB, and I was limiting myself to an hour a day on my laptop, and trying to skip days if possible. Not to mention constant app updates (per month, god, between 20-100?) this was a few months back, I have home internet now, so it's not an issue anymore. But no, I don't buy 1.5GB. Sorry.
Next Bill Cycle: 04/02/2011
Data (MB): 7373 of Unlimited
Messaging: 3846 of Unlimited
First android phone. I stream a lot though.

When I had unlimited on my tigers htc dream I tethered to my lappy... I was using lime 50-200gb a month easily. Now with Atrix 1.8gb but wifi monitor apps would say I used atleast 5gb this month. Also ttorrent off market is good.3 dollars and unlimited dl speed. I hit speeds of up to 2.6 mb/s =)
Do most of you using massive amounts of data not have access to wifi or choose not to use it for some reason?
I think I'm able to use wifi for at least 75% of the time, so I don't really end up using much network data. I'm not even close to 1 GB with only a few days left in the billing cycle according to my account page. It definitely feels like I use at least 1-2 GB of data in a month (including wifi) so I got an app to satisfy my curiosity. Interested in seeing how much I actually use. I've only tethered a couple times since I often have access to wifi, so I'm sure that really slows my network usage.
I use wifi 80% of the time, since March 4th, I've used about 500mb of 3G and 3GB of wifi.

Can PDANet truely hide tethering from AT&T?

Found some old posts, back in May, where people were discussing whether PDANet could truly hide tethering from AT&T, or other providers. I was tethering with my rooted SGS2 and received the text, email, and snail mail notices from AT&T that I would lose my unlimited data and be forced to by a tethering plan if I continued to tether. I was utilizing the stock rom with the tethering manager frozen.
Has anybody utilizing the 3.02 version of PDANet been contacted by AT&T to c&d? If so, could the c&d be attributed to tethering done before installing PDANet?
thanks,
retnuh
I'd like to know as well.
I don't think pdanet does anything special...i use approx 3-5gigs a month all mostly teathering. I have never received any notices of any kind.
I think as long there isn't any high spikes in data usage, you'll be safe.

This is just an unproven theory by myself, but don't use internet explorer on the device you are tethering to.

Personally, I use Firefox with User Agent usually set to Iphone, but obviously if there was a galaxy s 2 user agent I would use it. I din't tether to much- maybe 500 meg a month, but I've never been caught.
I got hit with the top %5 text the other morning...managed to use just under 12gigz this billing cycle..MOSTLY from wifi tether Phone 2 Phone and i maybe used an hr tethering to a laptop..I work for the bastards..doesn't matter what you use...all ill say is the network is alot smarter than people think..trust me..

Supposedly Barnacle "hides" it and it's a free app. Google it.
I wonder if using an SSH connection would encrypt the connection enough to hide anything they sniff out to detect tethering.
If your rooted and have root explore just delete tehtering manager. Apk in system/app and if your on a custom rom it is more than likely already removed for you. Now if I could just get decent data speeds I would use it
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
That's the way I was tethering when I was told by AT&T to c&d. That's why I'm trying to find a way to tether and not get caught.
Hmmm odd you must have had huge data spikes because without that app they can't tell besides seeing you use like a gig a day. Interesting any thoughts guys?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
If somebody knows for sure if PDANet stealth mode works - I'd really, REALLY like to know too! Had AT&T's "Unlimited" plan for a few years now. Been teathering, but for completely trivial amounts of data - during most months my usage didn't go over a gig or two. This month I went over 4 gig for the first time ever, and suddenly all hell broke loose. I get repeated "5%" messages over text and email, warning they will throttle down my 3G speeds (they are already a complete joke here in NY-NJ). So I stopped using all data for about a week now, but the messages never stopped, and now I am getting the tether notices.
I got the letter last May when I had an iPhone that was jailbroken. Now I got the rooted Android and I just don't want to lose unlimited data. I tried once with PDA bored at an airport and wanting to do basic surfing on my laptop. I used it again the other night on my laptop for simple surfing as my main internet went down and so far as I know (/knock on wood/) I'm okay.
Most say TTL is how they find out. My problem is they have intricate logs of every phone call and text you ever sent but can't tell me a MAC addy, time, etc. of when I tethered. Fact is known that only those with unlimited data plans were the ones attacked as it seems they are slowly trying to phase these out.
I just make sure to not have Windows Updates enabled when surfing on my laptop with tethering. It's obvious any mobile phone shouldn't be accessing this site.
I dont know how they can tell but it seems they are always able to. I used my android to tether with an iphone to download Wifi only updates and after about 3 months i got the notice saying I need to not tether or they will remove unlimited.
Apparently they say that the notices aren't always Instant (I was figuring i would get it right after i used tethering). I know for a fact i had not tethered after the last time so it was roughly 3 months behind.
I do not believe sirs (referring to OP)

Anyway to stay 4G in a 4G LTE area?... Let me explain why...

Ok. So I have always just had 4G in my area until recently. I have the APN info to run unthrottled. I have an unlimited data plan and I use my phone for tethering my computer and my xboxs at home. Since it is now LTE now my UNTHROTTLED, APN switches on and off randomly and eventually knocks me back to the regular ATT PTA APN. I want to find a way to lock my phone to 4G only so I can stay on the unthrottled APN so I can at least have 2mbps instead of being throttled down to 500kbps a quarter of the way through the month. Which makes it practically impossible to play xbox games online or stream a movie, Download anything is a headache now. The worst part about it is even the LTE maxes out at 5mbps where I live anyways so it's not like I'm getting 21+ like I do in other LTE areas. Is there anyway around this or should I invest in an Android 4G only phone and just use it while at home? Thanks for any help that someone could give me.
Excessive data use always gets throttled. No way around it. I'm not saying "excessive use", at&t is.
They easily track usage by your sim card and IEMI, so APN settings don't matter.
Actually.....
Actually. With the APN I had it never got throttled. I was doing 46gigs+ a month. Never ever got throttled until it knocked me up to LTE and made my phone skip the un throttled APN.

46GBs? It's about time you did get throttled. 4G and LTE APN's should both be throttled APNs. Try the 3G APN.
I agree, save some bandwidth for the rest of us. I don't know how you haven't had your account closed down yet, or why you weren't throttled using a particular APN for so long. Must have just been network goofiness, because like rangercaptain said, that's not how AT&T tracks you for throttling anyway.
Edit: Moving to a 3G APN shouldn't matter either. Nor would being on a 2G or 3G-only tower. No matter what I'm connected to, I'm still limited to 5GB/month before getting throttled, because that's where grandfathered LTE plans are set. Doesn't matter if I'm actually using LTE or not, it's per-plan.
46+ Gb? Really???? Unbelievable! No, really. Unbelievable. You must mean 4.6 Gb because you'd be turned off, or at least you'd be getting communications from your carrier. I think either you are telling stories or you don't really know what you are talking about.
Johnus is 100% correct for AT&T. You get 5 Gb unthrottled per unlimited plan. Doesn't matter if you consume that 5 Gb using LTE, 4G, 3G, or string and soup cans.
I'm serious. I was getting months of 46 and more gigs without being throttled using one specific APN. The weird thing is now that yesterday I cut my phone on and all my APNs were gone except the default. They don't mess with me because the last time they tried to take me off unlimited for tethering I caused a big scene and kept on getting my call transfered up to a higher and higher management denying the fact that I did it and threatened them with a lawsuit. I already have a FCC complaint set up against them for throttling since it was never notified of agreed to a change in my plan. I was using a 4G APN that had what looked like corporate **** on it because I to this day can't find the info I had that I put in to get away with it. Now that it's LTE now it cuts 4G to completely off to 4G not allowing me to stay online longer than 15mins before it shuts down. That's all erased somehow now. My tethering file is deleted and I use wifitether app to do my tethering and have not been caught while tethering since I did that over 6months ago and for 6months I have been using about 50g a month
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
I guess they won.
It's far from over. I'm over 6gigs now and not throttled. Since using the tweakker APN. And I have been told if you file an FCC complaint they will let you run wide open once it gets filed with them. Usually take a month or two. They have so many lawsuits pending right now they can not deal with another.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
..... And in my area, I assure you that my data usage is not effecting any of you. I live 30miles outside of Memphis TN. In the middle of nowhere. A year ago my phone only picked up in one spot in my entire house. The city is so small they banned any towers for going up because of the fear of radiation. I live around a bunch of ignorant rednecks that use Walmart prepaid phones and the only Internet they know of is Hughes Net and the local library.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Really not sure I can take anything you say as serious. That said, if you get anywhere with you supposed FCC filing, you'd be the first. The issue has already been tested and AT&T is on firm ground.
This is how you can take me seriously. That shows my data usage.

Gonna post this months data usage with my Internet speed.. It never shows a tether is being used. It is unexplainable by looking at the phone info where the data is using. Which is also exactly what ATT gets, they have no clue where I'm using so much data.

My apologies. I gotta admit, the proof is in the pics. I know that ATT would normally go ballistic about this so I don't really understand why you're getting away with it. They really don't care what you use the data for. Normally, all they care about is how much data you've used in a month. You are getting away with murder, my man. Good for you!
It's because they have threatened me in the past. I threatened back and they backed off. But it was before I deleted the tether file and used wifi tether app. They busted me for tethering now they can't. Can't tell what I'm using it for. It's like they try to throttle me at certain times. Randomly now that I have LTE coming thru at my home. I was wondering how many others have figured this out. I guess it is just that I threatened to put a lawsuit on them.

New LTE APN harder on data caps?

I just got throttled for the first time in almost 4 years with T-Mobile I have to say it is the worst experience ever and I can feel your pain if you have been here before. I am on an old unlimited myfaves plan still with unlimited data(5GB) but has never ever been enforced I usually do about 8-10GB and most was 19GB. For the first time ever since using this new phone with the new APN it slowed me down without even using 5GB according to my phone from cycle to today I'm at 3.7GB. I'm not sure if anyone has experienced anything similar?
I was able to go back to old APN as I do not have LTE here and my speed was fully restored. But the new one still slowed down.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
What is saying you used 3.7GB? The phone? Like through Data Usage within settings? Did you make sure the time frame was adjusted correctly? I know you can slide the silders to make sure it's from the start of your cycle to the end. I don't think it defaults to that making it seem like you've used less data.
Also, I recommend downloading Tmobile My Account out of the PlayStore. That will tell you exactly how much data Tmobile is saying you're using. Although I've never heard of cases, Data Usage in settings does say the data there may be different than what your carrier says.
