I have a HTC Fuze. The last few ROMS that i have been using (Energy, RRE, Tael), all the Apps always use the 3G internet to do their work even if a much faster Wifi is connected. Is there any way to make all apps(including things like email) globally prefer the Wifi when available? Also I dont want to have to keep changing settings to do this, It simply needs to be "If Wifi available use it, else use 3G"
Thanks in advance.
What i did was to go to start>settings>connections>advanced>select networks and change the default connection to the internet to "My work network", rather than my 3G network. This way, if theres any connection to the internet needed, my phone will use my wifi connection. The problem with this, however, is that when you dont have a wifi connection available, the phone will not connect to the internet unless you change the above setting back to your 3G network. If anyone knows a better way, please let us know
no i cant keep switching. thats too much trouble. there must be a better way.

Does it automatically connect to WiFi when a known network is within range even when the phone is in sleep? If yes, does it disconnect once not in use for a while?

As far as I know there is no way to do it automatically. You can use one or the other but they must be switched manually. All HTC phones have always worked this way. Maybe if the demand was high enough which apparently it is not a Chef could come up with an app that would do it. But for now you must do it manually.

that is extremely failurous. not preferring the fastest internet connection is major fail. did not know that.
My phone does this automatically. It uses the WiFi whenever it's on. If the WiFi is off, it uses the data connection.
Maybe I'm understanding it wrong?

what the heck? how? u must help me find out..
i think it does prefer wifi over 3g in WM 6.5...!!
to check it out here is wt i've done....turn data connection off...check that its on in the notification manager "when u click on the task bar"..then run any app that needs internet " opera, msn messenger, email...etc" while this app is online..
now there r two ways to check it
1-the notification manager & see if it turned to 3g data connection...if so u should find a timer running in ur service provider section, if not then its only using wifi
2-check the communication manager & see if it turned the data connection on, if its off then its using wifi...
thats how it is with my touch pro...i'm using energy rom nov. 08 build
Indeed it prefers wifi connections 2 data, but You have to :
1. Have Known wifi spots in range
2. Keep wifi connection on, while in stand by
Keep in mind that if a program starts to use the data connection it wont change to use the wifi one. So firstly connect and then open programs.

apparently its some sort of combo of this. i am using 6.5. any apps that have been using 3g continue with it. and i have to go to the comm screen and turn off data to force new apps to consume wifi. which isnt too bad, certainly not as bad as going to the network options. i would wish they made this a bit more seamless like with the desktop technology, i can switch from wired to wireless lan without even dropping a skype call.

now i have discovered a new problem. even if i open the app after i have wifi turned on and data turned off, some apps just dont want to use the wifii.
Bing maps and google maps for example just tell me there is no internet.
this is really pissing me off, whats the point of having wifi on a phone if the apps wont use it. i dont really care about the google location service if the data is through the internet, but atleast turn on.
lame.
I m using H+ with my cell company, no 3G. But i set the network for CDMA , still switch , how to stop it? thanks
Goto Settings > wireless and networks > Mobile networks > Network mode and select the appropriate one.....
hit thanks if it helps u....
I understand your problem...This will happen automatically...
The network will switch to H/H+ when you need connectivity and when in idle it will go back to 3G..This is done to save battery and processor speed i guess...
You can always see that when data transfer is needed, the connection switches itself...However from my experience this will create a slight delay always....
I don't know more in detail...like whether this is an android feature or depends on the carrier.. or whether we can disable autoswitching between H and 3G...What I know is this happens for most of us...
Experts pls correct me if you feel to.

Even if it is possible to stick with H all the time, I believe it will have a considerable impact on battery life...
My personal opinion is that your battery life will be cut by half at least... So not worth it...

It'd be nice if we could just adjust the delay of the automatic switch to 3G.
Something like 30 seconds would be nice as most people will probably spend less than that time on a single webpage before switching to another one. That way it won't really affect the browsing speed.
Battery life would not be affected too much as the phone will mostly stay in 3G when it is in idle, even if there are some stuff syncing in the background that will turn H back on.
I think that is the intended behavior, at least on my XXKG3 ROM. The network is idle on 3G... as soon I need data, it switches to H+. I tested that numerous times, it is instant.

Hi, i was just wondering if its possible to turn off the 3G on the HD2. I had an iPhone and a Desire where it was possible so was just wondering if its possible on this?
Many thanks, GS
Sure is: go to Comm Manager>Settings>Phone>(slide to tab)Band>Select Network Type. (choose GSM)
You may have 3G toggle in Comm Manager but dependant on your ROM (can be added)
Also these phone settings can be reached from Phone dailer>Menu>Options
And you may have a phone settings link also in windows Menu>settings>Personal>Phone
These instructions are assuming you are WM6.5-6.5.x ...
Ahh ideal. Thanks for the response.
Is there a way you can completely turn off the data connection? I dont want a permanant connection via 3G or GSM. I just wanna turn it off like you can on most phones. Is this possible?
Thanks, Darryn

phone setup:
i9100
android ver 4.0.3
baseband i9100mugld3
cf rooted
This may sound like a crazy question but there are 2 locations i'm at a lot that have 0 to 1 bars of 3g and an edge tower right on top of them. Anyway for some reason the phone almost always wants to grab onto the 3g and it is a horrible connection for both voice and data. I have wireless there so i really don't care about data but dropping calls sucks. Is there an app, solution, workaround to forcing the phone onto the cel tower i want to use instead of letting it decide to do the wrong thing?
thanks
Have you tried just turning off mobile data in settings?

Settings > Wireless & Network > More > Mobile Network > Network mode > select GSM only and it will only use the gprs connection. If you dont want to use the GPRS connection then uncheck the " Use Packet Data Option ".
I've actually tried that while it disables data it doesn't force a switch on the tower. I guess my title & original question isn't quite right.
so now i guess how do i force my phone onto a different tower so i can actually get good service when i need it.
I just use the switchpro widget, since then i can turn on and off a lot of stuff from my homescreen.

Under mobile network settings, change it from auto mode to gsm only. I guess this is what you are looking for

actually i was just about to post the gsm/wcdma/auto to get it to switch over. However it does not always work sadly. I remember on an old moto (forget model) that i could actually choose a network tower, man i wish i could do that now

It perfectly works for me. If i set gsm only, it stays on edge and if i set wcdma only, it stays on H+ for me.
sorry should have been more specific again. it will go to edge but will often decide to pick a tower far away instead of a close one
Hi all! Yes, I'm a newbie. I am using HTC Amaze 4G from T-Mobile and with their ICS update, I have not been able to use Wifi... It is not hardware related problem: When I'm in the university, I can connect to the university Wifi without any problems; when I come home, even though I can see 20 networks available from my laptop, from my phone I cannot see any... I am wondering if I go for Custom Rom, can I solve this issue? (In that case, I think I need to read the forum a lot to learn all these )
Try this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.roamingsoft.manager
I have just tried this: When I use fix network, for a while it shows all possible available networks and then shows nothing. It just says Scanning and no networks are shown after the fixing.
It shows the available networks while exiting the airplane mode. And, in fact, even though it says so, my phone still remains in the airplane mode.

Do they really exist..?
They exist. I can see them from my laptop. I didn't know there were so many, after seeing them on my phone, I checked from my laptop and yes, one-to-one match.
Additional info: Im in the university right now and I can connect to WiFi here -- I can see all available WiFis -- when I am at home, I have 20 WiFis available around; however, my phone doesn't see any of them... And, unfortunately, my reception is not so good at home, I was using WiFi Calling; now, I'm struggling with phone calls.

Are you on WiFi Calling at University?
Are you on WiFi Calling at Home?
Is the built-in Hot Spot surely shut down?
Try to shut the WiFi Calling and use the regular GSM voice calling for a while - and see if any changes/improvements?

Are any of these 20 available WiFi connections in YOUR house? If not, maybe your computer just has a really strong wireless card compared to the chip in the Amaze so its picking stuff up further away. Try exiting
Your home and walking different directions ans see if you pick anything up then

No I'm not using WiFi calling at the univ; but I need to use it at home bcs of my awful signal quality. Anyhow, I have checked and WiFi calling is disabled and no hotspots are available from my phone. And I still have the problem
At least 1 of them is from the wireless modem next to me
Here is a question is your wifi modem using wep type security or wpa? On my amaze it has a hard time picking up wep security routers (which is fine its crap security anyways) so change your router to WPA standard and see what happens. Good luck
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda app-developers app
WPA-PSK and the problem right now is not I cannot connect. My phone doesn't see any WiFi when I am at home.
With 20 networks all that close they may be interfering with each other. Try using a WiFi analyzer on your computer to change your router's channel or frequency.
Sent from my Amaze 4G using xda premium
That is quite possible but I wasn't having this issue before ICS update from T-Mobile. Still, I will try different channels just to be sure.
I have tried changing the channels but it didn't work neither. In fact, the weird thing is none of the networks are visible. I can see the list only when I am using Wifi Connection Manager's fix Wi-Fi Problems button and it is only for 1 sec. Then it's a clear list...
Today, I have seen that my phone is able to see the WiFis around but not near my apartment -- that's like a joke, isn't it? Somehow, when I'm close the apartment, I can't see any WiFis available. This might be because of interference as you suggested. But, it was working all fine before ICS update and right after the update, it started behaving this way. Any suggestions?
