Hi!
Is anyone else experiencing problems with the mobile data connection on this phone? It frequently stops working. Being in an area with excellent HSPA+ coverage, this can't be a signal issue.
The phone will suddenly stop loading anything, while displaying "3G" and an active upload indicator in the notification area. No internet usage is possible in these situations.
The only remedy: Cycling "data network mode" off/on. The phone will then immediately pick up HSPA+ again, working as intended.
My previous phone (Nexus One), which I used pretty much identically and at the same places as my Galaxy S2, did not experience these stalling issues. Is this a general (firmware) problem, or should I possibly look into getting a replacement unit?
I also have this problem. My SGS2 is on O2 (UK), got the phone from P4U.
Exactly the same problem, connected through H+ with good signal, suddenly the phone will switch to 3G and I will lose my connection, this can last for minutes unless I toggle data on/off. I am on KE7, but had this problem with KE2 as well.
It sounds similar to a problem mentioned in other threads, but this is the exact problem that I am facing.
I am also considering replacing the phone (if it is a phone issue, and not a firmware issue)
Happens to me also. Very annoying

Same problem here, but i also have problem with communicating via phone. Every time it starts in home, usually morning. I cant recieve any phonecalls or sms, also i cannot call or send sms. Need to reboot, signal is -113dB and i cannot choose plane -mode, it doesnt go there. Also i cannot select operator manually. Reboot is needed every time. This scenario has been over 3-4 mornings and i have owned SGS2 about 1,5 weeks now.
I have disabled fast dormancy, and never again experienced the issue.

Yes, I think he is referring to this procedure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086599
It's good to know I'm not the only one experiencing intermittent connection issues - as this appears to be a firmware problem, I will wait for Samsungs next few releases to solve the problem. If the bug won't go away I might get a replacement unit.
In any case, please report back - if someone got his phone replaced due to this issue, did it fix it? Any other possible solutions?
I've spoken about this issue, the 3g itself doesn't want to work.
I've tried uskr's fix and it seemed to have worked. Also root needed.
The fix involves editing /system/build.prop
adding to the bottom.
ro.ril.enable.dtm=1
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=28
ro.ril.hsupa.category=9
ro.ril.hsxpa=3
Happens to me, can't wait till it's fixed.
Same problem with my phone
Just to let u know guys i'm facing the same issue with this phone. My data connection disappears completely bringing up a circle sign. I also lose the ability to make or receive the call. I sometimes get calls going to voicemail with full reception, when this happens I can't browse either. I am debating whether to replace the handset as I have about 4 days left to get a replacement. I bought the handset from carphone warehouse. It is a sim-free unbounded handset running the latest KE7 firmware. Any help would be appreciated as i am absolutely in love with this handset. By the way could u tell me if anyone is experiencing jagged lines while scrolling in the browser.
That's something new.
Try factory reset.

Someone mentioned loading up the phone hidden menu *#*#9900#*#* and clicking on Disable Fast Dormancy there, but not sure if that actually works or not.
in another thread i have solved this problem on my device by disabling fast dormancy. not only it solved 2g/3g issue..it also solved lost connection and battery drain.

hello iznee,
so how did you disable fastdormancy ?
i tried the hidden menu *#*#9900#*#* but it didn't work.
or did you do uskr method posted about how to disable fast dormancy ?
what about the method of editing the system.prob ?
which one of them?
please clarify
and did that solved your problem about switching from 2g to 3g ?
regards
It's not really a 2g/3g problem, more 3g/HSDPA and up problem.
And there "could" be two fixes, one I mentioned above (editing build.prop) lets call it data fix.
And the other requires deleting or editing the actual fast dormancy file as explained here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086599
Both are actually uskr's fixes. I did the data fix, which worked, but to make sure, I also deleted dormancy file.

i checked uskr thread and he crossed the part about deleting the file and only kept the part that involved editing that file.

Hello everyone, i'm asking this because it's the third time i had this issue. I often keep my Data Network Mode deactivated and turn it on only when i need because of my 3g plan (quota, taxes, and also because it's likely to find a WiFi network in the places i usually go).
The problem is, sometimes i turn on 3g (by Phone options menu) and... nothing happens... i need to reboot to make it work again.
The 3G network in my country is quite unstable, but i'm pretty sure that isn't a signal problem because one of the times i was turning on/off the 3G to make it work and i gave up and forgot to turn it off, the next day when i tried again i found it was On but not connected. After a reboot, working again.
Anyone having this issue who found a fix? Could be a problem with the kernel or app?
Edit: I Forgot: CF-ROOT Kernel, KF3

mate i am afraid you have answer already - "The 3G network in my country is quite unstable"
that can clearly produce the bug. Just in the case check your APN settings if they are correct. Settings- wireless and network-mobile networks- access Poin Names - compare the stats there with your network provider and make deep research.
just example i am on vodafone - i found that i was running vodafone live profile in APN and i was loosing conexion and i had troubles loading some pages - after research i found that there is another setup for vodafone as well - different then the live but for vodafone as well. i am using it since then and i am experiencing now the lighting speed of 3g. Just give it a try.
Searching on the internet i found that the configuration of my APN is equal to the recommended.
Backup data and factory reset phone should clear any software problems .
You could try flashing KH3 modem .

Same issue here for both rooted and un-rooted GS2
Retracted - will have to do more testing
Hi
Since last update (9 dic) everytime I restart the phone I can see the 3G icon on the systembar but the 3G data connection is off on settings.
I have to set the 3g data connection on and then off to make the 3G icon disappear.
With the 3G setting off I reboot the phone and the 3g icon is back again ...
Any one is having the same problem ?
Thanks Iosu

yes I turn off data connection
I think your issue is different
Hello Iosub,
The 3g icon could be just indicating that you are using the 3g voice ( not the data). On my old Nokia's they would show the 3g icon even though I never used data.
Hello nemets,
Unfortunately not all the carriers allow the 3G connection setting in their Cellular setting. Though the option does exist as evidenced by the How-to Cellular settings page on the Microsoft website.

thanks for your answer.
i don't think that is the issue.
1. Because when i go to settings the data connection is off
2. Because if I turn on and the off the data connection the icon disappears
3. Because this was not happening with firmware 1.08 this is new with version 2.1
i think is a bug with the new firmware , lets see if someelse has the same problem..
Thank you
found a fix
I have found a fix.
I have turn on flight mode and reboot.
then I have turn off flight mode and reboot
I have reboot 5 times and no more 3g icon on startup. Only if I have the data connection on prior reboot witch is the correct behavior
hope is no back again

I've noticed strange behavior with 3G (H) indicator.
Sometimes the icon appears even with Data Cellular off, I also see that restart behavior.
Will try the Air Plane mode trick and see if it solves this ODD thing.
What I don't understand is: why in the H**** this is done by firmware? Shouldn't this be controlled by the OS?
PS: when Cellular Data is OFF, even if the icon is in the screen, there is no connection working.

I was having the same issue.. After my trick it has been fixed.. try it
also. now my batery live is longer
Iosu
I also noticed this bug, once yesterday and twice again today.
However, I couldn't identify what triggers the issue, it seems to be happening out of the blue on my phone.
At first I thought I've fixed it by turning cellular data on/off but that proved to be only a temporary fix (as it occured again).
I also agree the issue has an impact over battery life. Usually my battery drains very slowly overnight (~2%) but last night it drained 10%. I examined the Battery Status graph and it clearly showed the battery drain going down abruptly around 5 o'clock.
I will try the airplane mode fix and report back.
UPDATE
I tried it but didn't work, maybe I didn't do it right:
- turn cellular data ON
- turn flight mode ON
- reboot
- turn flight mode OFF
- reboot
- turn cellular data OFF
After a few hours, the H icon appeared all of a sudden on the status bar...
the issue is back
Now the trick does not work :-(
Time to find a way to fix it
HTC response is to reset.. Why in the hell they always give the same answer ?

Hello,
My Titan has this problem too.
I have made the "Airplane" solution but since yesterday the 3G icon appeared again.
Any solution for this or should I reset the phone?
Thanks

Another Trick
Hi
I have found another trick.
step to fix
1.- Set DataConnection ON
2.- Go to a place where you lost the antena coverage connection completly, example a garage
3.- Go to DataConection turn OFF
Now move to a place with Antenna coverage
you will see that there is no more 3g/h simbol.
Hope this helps
Hi to all,
Unfortunately I ve got the same annoying problem after the last update through Zune. Hope this trick works, but maybe a permanent solution is another HTC update to correct this bug...
The above trick worked for almost 24 hours, now the bug appeared again. Thanks for your help anyway. One question please : what if I hard reset the phone? That means no more updating through Zune? Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas!

The problem is that if the Hard Reset solves the problem...

I guess that hard reset may be the solution since the bug came up after the last update.
I think I m gonna try it.

Greetings to all.
~So I haven't really seen anyone else with this issue so I don't know how to fix it.
My phone likes to randomly not load things via internet. Mostly happens with ATT Data connections, but sometimes it happens with Wifi as well I believe (hasn't happened with wifi in a long time).
I can try and load a page and it will simply not load a thing for a good while (sometimes hours), then all of a sudden it will load like it's on a 10MB connection.
Happens with the internet browser, facebook, and any internet apps. Really gets annoying when I'm trying to browse the internet
I have tried different APNs to no avail, tried turning wifi on/off, changing all wifi settings, etc.
Anyone got any suggestions? (Maybe I'm just retarded and there's a well-known fix for this... at least I can hope right?)
Thanks
EDIT: It also used to never send MMS until I changed APN's if that makes any difference. Just not sure if its a software/setting issue, or if its hardware that needs to be replaced.
There are two APN settings, one of which is used by MMS. It sounds as if your APN settings might have been wrong at one point. What are your APN settings now?
Are you on a different ROM? Do you use a 3rd party app to disable and enable the data connection (to save power)? I know my app sometimes doesn't turn the data back on, so I have to go in and do it myself.
Is this your first phone with AT&T? If so, where did you transfer form? Did you have a data plan with your previous carrier? Did you buy your phone from Amazon?

My APN settings are the "phone" HSPA and "phone" MMS settings from the large thread in this forum.
The phone isn't even rooted. No different ROM, just a stock phone. No 3rd party apps that disable/enable data.

I've had ATT for a decade or so now. Phone bought and activated in an ATT store, and last phone I had was an iPhone, so whatever data plan that used was what I was previously using. I would assume they changed the plan to reflect the android device (if there is any difference), but I wouldn't really know because it is on our family account.
Anybody got any clue? This is really annoying the **** out of me. Also found out my brothers phone (on same family plan) is doing the same thing.

Maybe download Tweakker from the market; it automatically rewrites APN settings for your phone and carrier. CM7 uses wap.cingular, and I used Tweakker to change it from that. Worked, no probs, loved me long time, yada yada.
Thanks, just downloaded it. We'll see if it makes any difference.
Worked great until just now. Lost internet again. Thanks though.
Any other ideas?
i am on AOKP, not sure if you have the options to do the following in stock but try.
1.do you have the option of deleting APN? delete all...
2. force the phone to look for wireless carriers (takes like 4 minutes).
3. click on At&t to registet on it.
4. reboot and the original apn should be there.
I reset it back to the original APN but I dont expect it to help... I had the problem even before I started messing with the APN. We'll see how it goes though.
Any other suggestions are still welcome.
I have a similar, if not the same problem. I have concluded that it's either a modem/hardware issue or network issue. Every one and a while, I'll have to wait ~20 seconds for the internet. This always happens on AT&T data. Once the connection is made, the green and orange data indicators light up and the page loads just fine. Changing the APN's increases my internet speed by a lot, but does not fix the latency issue.
Someday I'll get around to calling AT&T.

Sounds like the same issue to me.
I keep thinking I should go to the ATT store but I really dont feel like having them do a reset of my phone then send me home without actually fixing anything.
Have you noticed what kind of connection you have? I don't use stock, so I haven't thoroughly tested this there, but I believe I experience the same issue. I'm running CyanogenMod 7, and what I see is that whenever the phone drops to 3G, I don't get data. I can force 2G (Edge), which works, and if I pick up HSPA+, I get data. If I'm in fairly sketchy signal areas (bad parts of buildings, fairly far from towers, etc.), I'll notice it flip-flopping back and forth between 3G and H+, with no data. I've never had an issue with wifi not properly loading anything.
I did try switching back to stock for a couple of hours, and it appeared my issues were more along the lines of what you describe, without actually displaying a flip to 3G when I can't get data...but like I said, I don't use stock on a regular basis.
NINJA EDIT: I'm on my second phone with this issue, after getting a refurb due to a USB port going bad. I've tried flashing multiple modems, and have been able to increase my speed, but have not been able to fix the issue when I drop to 3G.

Im in an area where I constantly get 4G or LTE... I haven't really noticed a correlation between the drops and whether or not its on 4G/LTE. I haven't experienced it on Wifi in a very long time though.
Also, the stock APN seems to magnify the problems greatly. Switched back to the Tweakker APN and it runs much better (although it still happens occasionally)
Had the same issue as you, try my guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576199 it seems to have helped many!

Hi all,
I've had this extremely annoying problem for ages and I don't believe it's only related to the SGS3 (I had this on my SGS2 as well, probably should post in a more general forum but w/e) and it seems to be when I'm at work only so could just be confined to an area but constantly throughout the day my data connection just stops working.
What happens is:
Data working fine ---> I don't get any notifications for a while (whatsapp, etc) ---> Check phone and all I see on the HSDPA icon is every few seconds the upload arrow lights up then goes off, over and over...
The only fix is to restart my phone, I can try to switch data off then on but that takes a lot longer as the phone can't disable data quickly and turning it back on takes forever; same applies to trying to get the phone in Airplane mode.
I've only had this problem in Westminster but it's just so frustrating because it keeps happening over and over and I have tried so many solutions (new modem, new kernel, formatting various different areas of my phone) but since I started having this problem with a different phone I'm at a complete loss...
Any help will be very appreciated.
Thanks!
I've pinpointed the same issue (or at least one with identic symptoms) to 2 different problems
- one specific cell antenna had issues with fast dormancy, it kept forgetting the connection. Disabling fast dormancy helped somewhat but since the issue was on network-side it only really got better when they finally checked+upgraded the antenna (it was offline for half a day)
- my provider keeps pushing apn settings with a terribly slow and broken proxy.
Removing it brings the network to full speed. If you have no proxy configured or cannot remove it, try using a VPN network to see if it gets better.

I think it's the former, I've configured the APN myself before and it's still been an issue. I hadn't thought about it being the cell antenna, I think I might call O2 and inform them because it's so irritating.

I use a lot of internet sharing (wireless). I noticed that when I start charging battery my phone is dropping signal network after a while. When I switch the screen back on, signal comes back. it's very annoying and it doesn't happen when phone is not charging. At first I thought its rom/kernel/modem related but problem remains with different combinationsb of above.
Any suggestions on how to fix this issue?

I guess so. Usually I use modem provided with rom. It looks like phone was going to deep deep sleep that it even loses network service and it wakes up when screen turns on. But as I said it happenes only when charging and, I think, only when I use internet sharing.
edit:
just checked with getril app and it says unknown ril so cant really tell if they match. I've put a NEAT rom 3.5 just today and didn't have chance to check wheather it still there or not but i guess it will still be there.
Your RIL and modem can change. The modem is up to the rom maker, they decide which one to use wheras your RIL stays the same from what you had on stock rom, unless you changed it of course

First of all, sorry for asking the same question twice (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1489237), but this thread seems to describe my problem even better.
I am using the latest Cyanogenmod 10 nightly on my Galaxy i9100, and it appears as if I have a similar problem. When I start charging my battery, the signal usually drops after a while. This is quite annoying, because I use my phone as WLAN hotspot. Rebooting the phone (charger connected) does not solve the problem. Instead, I usually have to unplug the cable and after that the phone quickly picks up a signal again.. I also tried to switch the airplane mode on/off. But then I cannot switch the airplane mode off again, so something really seems to be hanging. In these situations, the baseband version shows 'unknown'.
I have just used the app GetRil to confirm that the Ril and baseband version are matching.
Has anybody solved this problem? Is this a hardware or software issue? Are there any things I could test or should I provide more information?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Guys' though I've never experienced this issue with wi-fi hotspot, I do know why the wifi turns off when your phone is charging.
So to settings > wifi> press menu button> choose advanced
you'll see an option what says "keep wifi on during sleep" or something of sorts. The default is set to "never". You guys need to change it to "always".
Cheers

Sorry for the confusion, but I think you got me wrong. It is not the WLAN connection that drops. It is the mobile network connection that drops, so I cannot make/receive calls or use the 3G connection anymore.
Update:
Didn't find solution, flashed back sammy stock rom with custom kernel and all problems vanished. Using stock rom since than and never had this problem again.

Just for the records: I could also solve this issue by flashing a stock rom again. This must be a problem of Cyanogenmod.

I had this problem too and all I had to do was turn off fast charging in the settings
I think it turns off or lowers the strength of the network so it could charge faster and that's why it does this
I don't know much about tech so it might only help with my phone ( which is the Samsung a12 ) but I also hope it helps you too
Good luck
